Note: IRC’s criteria for picking music videos is basically: they have to be 2020 (for a little longer) releases; they must be original music videos (no clip or cover art; public domain video shorts, etc.); they cannot be private, and the song itself must be meaningful, tasteful and all-around well produced.

The All Black Cast Taps 80’s Influences on Third EP

Costa Rican indie rock band The All Black Cast’s third EP, Bulk, features the electrifying track, “New Cah!”

The band says the track is heavily influenced by artists such as Gary Numan, T. Rex, and The Cars, specifically. It’s also not far off as we can hear some of those influences.

The band, founded in 2003, draws not just from 80s artists but also 90s indie/noise bands like The Jesus Lizard. The single is about the “confusing, contradictory, and hyper-partisan current political climate” of our times.

On vocals, guitar, and songwriting is veteran Hernan Tasies, who has 25 years of playing in bands and later as solo artists, James Catholic.

The bulk of Tasies’ work happened during his years spent in Houston and New York City and has continued in his native Costa Rica. Carter, a guitarist turned bassist (for the ABC), drives the recording and engineering of the band.

Toronto born, turned Tico (Costa Rican), Carter spent years in Toronto music, with his own projects, Faceplant and Spoutbec, and also doing session work. Pablo Montero was the last to join the band, a hard-hitting drummer who has a special devotion to Deus and The Cure.

The Witches of Endor Drop ‘Moonquake’

Beginning in 2019, the duo The Witches of Endor forged an unholy alliance to begin work on what would eventually become their debut album, Moonquake.

Witches Of Endor blends and pulls from many different musical genres, bending and twisting “the very fabric of space and time like a cosmic saltwater taffy of METAL” the duo’s guitarist/drummer/vocalist/songwriter David Mayne says.

Together with his partner, guitarist/drummer/songwriter Jason Critoria, the duo founded Witches of Endor.

Mayne and Critoria are influenced by Type O Negative, Metallica, Ghost, Korn, Alice In Chains, and Silverchair.

2020 Best Indie Songs Playlist #10 – Moonunitt, Strangely Alright, Adam Hill, Hundred Miles High, Operocia, Ison Iva

Despite the pandemic, there have been plenty of great indie rock bands and artists dropping singles. The Indie Rock Bands Spotlight series includes a new indie music playlist that features the following indie bands and artists:

Moonunitt – Ithaca, New York (“Dragon”)
Strangely Alright – Tacoma, Washington “Maybe If”
Adam Hill – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (“Magnetic North”)
Hundred Miles High – Yorkshire, England (“Shine On”)
Annabelle’s Curse – Bristol, Tennessee (“Thunder”)

Ison Ava – Utrecht, The Netherlands (“Like Lightning to Ground”)
Desmond Grundy – Toronto, Ontario (“Fifteen of Fame”)
Jerry Impini – Brooklyn, New York (“Been Bad For Me”)

indie bands

Moonunitt – “Dragon”

The upstate New York psychedelic rock/avant-garde outfit are so-called “anti-heroes performing a mix of original tunes influenced by its favorite artists: Phish, Flaming Lips, and Mac DeMarco.

Earlier this year Ithaca‘s Moonunitt dropped a 10-track album, Like A Dream, featuring a collection of demo-like tracks spanning the spectrum of psych-rock, pop, folk, tropicalia, and offbeat. The tracks span the timeline from 2018 through 2019.

The vocals are rough and really need work in most spots. Some of the top tracks include the psychy number “Dragon.”

Check out Moonunitt’s Bandcamp page for more tracks.

strangely-alright

Strangely Alright – “Maybe If”

Tacoma’s quirky indie rock band Strangely Alright has been pumping out mini indie gems for the past couple of years that we’ve been listening to their releases on Bandcamp.

The Washington state band just released the woozy – and a bit scary – song, “Maybe If,” an eight-minute foray into the zanny and partially demented minds of band members like the lead singer and songwriter, Regan Lane, as well as guitarist/vocalist Sean Van Dommelen; bassist Ken Schaff; keyboardist/vocalist Raymond Hayden and drummer Jason Bair.

Watch the official lyric video for the track.

Earlier in the year, the band dropped the super track, “Here.” Clocking in at nearly half the time as “Maybe If,” the second track may be more succinct for some listeners.

The band describes itself as “sonic time-travelers” who “paint paisley patterned pictures that shimmer with the 60’s mercurial blend of darkness and innocence; mesh psychedelia and pop melodies together; run rock muscle through the most danceable of tunes…”

hundredmilesj

Hundred Miles High – “Shine On”

Hundred Miles High is an English rock band from Yorkshire, England, formed in 2020.

The band’s lineup consists of veteran musicians who have played on the northern U.K. gig circuit for the past decade: Will Dunk (lead vocals); Paul Blackett (guitars and backing vocals) and Jonno Iliffe (drums).

HMH’s self-produced debut album, Boxfresh, is a collection of energetic songs full of swirling guitars, booming percussions, and intriguing lyrics on songs like the lead single, “Shine On.”

Unfortunately, as has been the case for tens of thousands of bands this year, the band cannot tour due to the pandemic.

HMH’s music is influenced by The Alarm, Hard-Fi, Big Country, and Oasis.

vast-oceans

Annabelle’s Curse – “Thunder”

Musician Tim Kilbourne has released a number of compelling indie tracks with the band Annabelle’s Curse. Bristol, Tennessee -based alt-folk band Annabelle’s Curse isn’t so much a curse as a happy accident. A series of accidents actually.

One of the original group’s founders guitarist Zack Edwards explains that he showed up on the porch of the other co-founder Tim Kilborne (vocals, banjo, guitar) six years ago after being introduced through mutual friends at Emory and Henry College.

“We started playing music and I just never went home,” Edwards remembers. “We did that for a little while, writing songs on the front porch and playing open mic nights.”

A third member, bassist Tyler Luttrell, joined the group after a night involving mucho whiskey and a little sleeping in a Walmart parking lot.

Other members include Travis Goyette (drums/auxiliary percussion); Kirk Bagnell (auxiliary percussion); and Carly Booher-Edwards (mandolin, vocals).

One of the many memorable songs on the album is the spectacular number, “Thunder.” IRC wrote up a post about the album a couple of months ago.

adamhill

Adam Hill – “Magnetic North”

Canadian folk/roots musician Adam Hill doesn’t seek out perfection; the world’s too complicated for that. He’s liable to pound random clusters of piano keys with an open palm if it makes music that feels good.

Mind you, he’s no slouch on his instrument. He knows his way around a guitar and can saw the heck out of a double bass.

There are no out-of-tune notes he won’t sacrifice in the interest of making honest music.

The Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island, Canada) songwriter is also a multi-instrumentalist, performing all notes for the bass, guitar, and piano on this uplifting, keeper track.

operocia

Operocia – “We All Fall Down”

In California, the Stockton alternative rock band Operocia is comprised of five friends who grew up together through high school and the years to follow.

For the past decade, the band has been knocking out the numbers and attracting crowds at shows and festivals.

The band’s latest release is the impressive lead single “We All Fall Down” from Operocia’s self-titled EP.

Two initial members, and brothers, Chris Hunter (vocals/guitar) and Jeremy Hunter (drums) started playing music as kids.

In high school, they met Michael Olson (bass) and Danny Marks (guitar). That was the true start for the band, but they were only fully Operocia when keys were added, commanded by Mike Soria.

Playing songs with melodic structures and heavy drum patterns, the band members are fans of Thrice, Manchester Orchestra, Brand New, and the Deftones. Additional influences include Explosions in the Sky, Circa Survive, and MuteMath.

ison-iva

Ison Ava – “Like Lightning to Ground”

Ison Ava is the pseudonym for indie/alt. rock guitarist, songwriter, and singer Wiard Jorritsma.

A resident of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Jorritsma’s music is characterized by his atmospheric guitar playing, melancholic lyrical themes, and a touch of electronics.

This is evident in the striking single, “Like Lightning to Ground.” He also recently released another single, “Eternity.”

A multi-instrumentalist, Jorritsma plays guitar, synths, drums, and bass on his tracks and DIY mixes and masters.

desmondgrundy

Desmond Grundy – “Fifteen of Fame”

On the new album, Animals on the Farm, Toronto musician Desmond Grundy‘s straight-up, alt-rock guitar music creates and licking and keeps trucking on.

Tracks like “Fifteen of Fame” are seeded in the creatively-structured musical styles of the bygone British Rock invasion and throughout the wide spectrum of Americana and folk styles.

The song, Grundy says, is based on Andy Warhol’s famous quote about everybody gets 15 minutes of fame. Whatever the case, the track is sure to get your blood pumping.

Grundy has an accessible creative signature coupled with musical influences from the classic rock and new wave eras. The album will drop next month.

“This is a fun song of hope for troubled times,” he says. ” I would generally classify this song as modern pop-rock with an intellectual bent.”

Impini

Jerry Impini – “Been Bad For Me”

Brooklyn musician Jerry Impini is a classically trained pianist, singer, songwriter, producer, and recording artist. Impini is a multi-instrumentalist with proficiency on piano, bass, drums, and banjo.

The tantalizing single “Been Bad For Me” is the latest single from the release.

Impini was classically trained since the age of six. He took private piano, guitar, and voice lessons at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in New York and was accepted by audition into Fiorello LaGuardia School of Music and the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in New York City at age of 15.

He has opened for bands such as The Romantics, LA Guns and is primarily influenced by Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and many others.

Debut Single: ‘Alone Like Me’ by London Musician Dunebug

dunebugRecently we were introduced to the heart-wrenchingly beautiful voice and acoustic music of London DIY musician Chi Limpiroj who uses the moniker Dunebug.

Limpiroj effortlessly blends an array of genres and styles that include dream-pop, surf-pop, shoegaze, and lo-fi. Her magical soothing voice may remind some of the musicians Cat Power and Beach House.

Dunebug is a Manchester-born and DIY in every sense of the word. Self-taught in guitar and singing, and with a background in sound recording, Limpiroj combined her skills to craft the first Dunebug EP in the comfort of her own bedroom. The first single from the E.P. is the captivating “Alone Like Me.”

“Alone Like Me’ is a bleak insight into the complexities of my love life (or lack of), due to past difficult relationships coming back to haunt me,” Limpiroj says.

“It’s about the struggle of becoming involved with someone who is perfectly lovely but pushing them away at the smallest hint of it becoming anything even remotely serious and ultimately being left alone, again, something I’m sure many people can relate to.”

Limpiroj recorded the song in her “tiny box of a bedroom” on a cheap condenser mic and an old Squire Telecaster she bought from her first boyfriend when she was 17 years old.

Then Limpiroj used Logic Pro X, nothing that her bedroom studio was “the most basic set-up you could possibly dream of, and I love doing it all myself.” More power to her! We want to keep hearing these amazing songs from an artist to watch in 2021.

Her previous band, Chi & the Twelfth Wall, supported the likes of Lucy Rose, Slow Club, Roddy Woomble around Manchester and Leeds, as well as playing at Magneet Festival in Amsterdam.

The live band includes herself on vocals and guitar, plus Rob Wynne on guitar; Tom Daley on bass, and James McGuinness on drums. Dunebug’s main musical influences include Cat Power, Feist, Beach House, Soccer Mommy, Japanese Breakfast, and Big Thief.

Album of the Week: Wonderous Appalachian Alt. Folk Rock from Virginia’s Annabella’s Curse

vast-oceans
One of our favorite surprise DIY releases of the crazy and depressing year 2020 is the fantastic indie album, Vast Oceans, from Bristol, Virginia alt. folk-rock band Annabelle’s Curse.

Since 2012 the band, headed by songwriter, singer, and guitarist Timothy Kilbourne, has attracted a small but loyal of fans.

The first-time listener – especially those of you who are folk enthusiasts – is bound to enjoy the homegrown Appalachian roots of the band and may make others wonder why they’ve never heard of the band before.

Annabella’s Curse has been playing live shows, festivals, and other events across the states for the past decade. With the pandemic having a devastating impact on live concerts, Annabella’s Curse has been like so many bands trying to figure out a way forward.

From the band’s FB page: “It has been a difficult year for music and is still trying to find our place in this brave new world. It’s been a long strange trip filled with ups and downs.”

While not being able to play tracks from Vast Oceans for live audiences this year, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a dazzling Appalachian folk-rock album not to be missed.

The songs on Vast Oceans are heartfelt, comforting, introspective, and wonderfully crafted musically. The band members and guest musicians are all solid players and fit right into the intent and groove of Kilbourne’s songs.

It’s hard not to love this album if you are a fan of authentic DIY folk-rock. In fact, there are only a couple of ‘miss’ songs out of the otherwise fantastic 11-track recording. Really, it’s one to spend some time listening to.

We really like Kilbourne’s roots-rock vocals as well. The unity of the band members tells a story of a talented set of musicians but a brotherhood for the love of this style of indie music that helped make indie music a popular genre.

If we had to recommend just five tracks for extra busy folks, they would be “Thunder”; the motoring, inspirational “Call of the Void” with its terrific folk authenticity; the wonderful performances on “Seven Seas”; the agonizing but beautiful ballad “Bolts and Steel” and the sunny, lush melodies on “Foul Beast.”

The other band members include Zack Edwards on guitar; Travis Goyette on drums; Kirk Bagnell on auxiliary percussion; Tyler Luttrell on bass and Carly Booher-Edwards on mandolin and vocals.

Best 2020 Indie Music Videos

“The Lonesome Man” – Diamonds and Guns

This raging, gravely hard-hitter from Los Angeles’ Diamonds and Guns (cool name) made our night. We actually felt like we should be riding a rollercoaster, ear buds on, this song playing. Most metal/hard-rock is, frankly, no bueno. However, D&G is a rare exception. This is good rock! Not the formatted dribble that comes from radio and labels.

“This Could Be The One” – Terrence and the High Flyers

“This Could Be The One” is a fantastically upbeat and sunny song with an impossible-to-ignore hook and a lush, smooth tropical vibe. The Ottawa soft folk rock duo will attract some more followers today.

“Rivers” – Alleys

This colorful video combined with the groovy, upbeat bedroom synth-pop of Boise multi-instrumentalist Jacob Diaz, aka Alleys. “Rivers” incorporates guitar and drum loops, musical crescendos, deep groove, and emotive vocals. Alleys has opened for bands like Floating Points, Big Dipper, and Eldren while his biggest musical influences are Elliott Smith, Real Estate, and El ten Eleven.

“Journey of a Navel” – Hush!Noise

A mystical, almost haunting sound with hushed vocals and a teddy as a central character. The Fougères, France band draws from post-rock, psychedelic, noise and ambient music.

“You Are Just Not Alone” – Black Moon Book

Chicago musician Mark Lofgren, aka Black Moon Book, drew us in with the psychedelic color filters and the Mac-DeMarco-meets-Brit-pop with this bedroom pop number that he says”touches on memory, isolation and, most explicitly, the healing power of hope and love.”

“California Sun” – The Honeycreepers

Usually we wouldn’t place a Joni Mitchell-like, radio pop song (because it’s not really indie) but the video is cool, and having escaped California, it makes us long for the good ole golden sun-shiny, clear skies, normal temperatures and semi-affordable-rent years of our California past before things started to get really hairy. We wish our friends and old acquaintances – still there or not – all the best.

Album Review: The Haunting ‘Hallow’ by In Ruin

With this being the year of the pandemic, many indie rock bands and artists’ 2020 releases were simply ‘missed’ as indie music fans’ lives were turned upside down.

Compounding that was the fact – in most cases – indie bands were unable to promote their releases with live shows.

Such was the case for the indie duo known as In Ruin. The two Detroit musicians behind the moniker are Terry Collia (guitars, vocals, percussion, synth) and Alex Shields (bass guitar, percussion, piano).

On their spectacular 2020 release, Hallow, Collia and Shields cook up a tantalizing blend of experimental Americana folk songs with emotive moods on spooky songs like “A Poison Tree” and intricate musical compositions as well as the dark, somber notes of songs like “Waters.”

The album is In Ruin’s first full length in four years and features guest appearances by members of genre luminaries Of the Wand & the Moon, Ostara, By the Spirits, and Night Profound.

Tracks like the brooding darkness of “Reckoning” and the title song make this album a perfect host for Halloween.

From the opening track of “Crossroads”, featuring Richard Leviathan, through the final piece, “Kysstu og Farðu” the band takes the listener on quite a fantastic sonic journey.

Despite the pandemic, the response to the album was impressive, including a strong show of support from the Bandcamp community.
