Ex-Slander drummer Rich Freitas dedicates ‘Weatherall’ to an old friend

Based in the legendary town of Mystic, Connecticut, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rich Freitas’ latest single, “Weatherall,” from the debut solo album REVENGE, is based on a true story.

“In 1995, a group of Mysticites decided to build a disco on their spacious attic floor. A DJ booth was installed, sound equipment from the rehearsal space of several local bands was hauled up the stairs, and the music began promptly at 10pm,” writes drummer Rich Freitas.

“Weatherall” is a special dedication to one of the original members – Andrew Weatherall.

The song is a touching tribute with an edgy, lo-fi vibe that is a bit reminiscent of Velvet Underground complete with an electric slow burn and one of the key musical veins that runs throughout the splendid nine-track album.

For his first album, Freitas decided to release it under the moniker Ellery Twining.

After being a member of bands such as 17 Relics and Low-Beam, Freitas joined the band Slander in 2012. Not long after, Stereogum named as a band to watch for 2013.

“If I was going to come out of retirement, I wanted to be a part of a rock band,” he said about joining Slander.

“What happened next was the wildest time of my entire life playing music.” Alas, Slander disbanded in 2014.

“After thirty years playing drums in several rock bands, I found myself being kicked out of my last band.”

None of that matters when you absorb the intricately composed simple, yet poignant, stories that feel authentic and organic. REVENGE is a recommended listen beyond just the single.

The album was recorded last November and December at Dirt Floor Studios in Chester, Conn. and co-produced by Freitas and Dirt Floor owner Eric Lichter along with engineering by Guido Falivene.

The other musicians helping with the album include bassist Dave Bentley(formerly of 17 Relics); guitarist Brad Bensko and percussionist Jason Curland.

LET’S LOVE INSTEAD Valentines’ Mix w/Kuwada, Lord Huron, Iron & Wine, Taj Mahal &more

Over the years, we’ve made plenty of love songs playlists and mixes and all.

Some have been a little popular – such as The Ultimate (Mostly) Indie Valentines Playlist – and shared over the years.

In fact, for a number of reasons, and a general dissatisfaction forever in how Spotify deliberately dilutes musicians’ royalities, we’re going to be sharing more playlists from non-Spotify platforms.

For this Valentines we put together a playlist featuring some terrific and inspirational love songs we’ve been listening to in the cafe lately – from a variety of genres and artists around the world. Surely hope you enjoy it and share/like/follow if you do. Peace.

U.K. indie supergroup Holodrum drop debut single ‘Free Advice’

Indie rock music’s latest new supergroup, the U.K.’s Holodrum, have dropped the debut single, “Free Advice” just weeks ahead of their self-titled album release (February 25th).

The new “disco-infused synth-pop group,” as the press release states, includes members of popular U.K. indie bands Yard Act and Hookworms, plus Cowtown, Virginia Wing and Drahla, with the full line-up consisting of Emily Garner (vocals), Matthew Benn (synth/bass/production), Jonathan Nash (drums), Jonathan Wilkinson (guitar), Sam Shjipstone (guitar/vocals), Christopher Duffin (sax/synth) and Steve Nuttall (percussion).

Speaking about the track, Garner said it “expresses the state of feeling invincible in the face of adversity and acts quite explicitly as a piece of good advice, applicable to anyone that’s gone out of their way just to harsh your vibe”.

Maybe Holodrum were destined to start at this point. This might be the first time they’ve all officially worked together, but between Emily Garner (vocals), Matthew Benn (synth/bass/production), Jonathan Nash (drums), Jonathan Wilkinson (guitar), Sam Shjipstone (guitar/vocals), Christopher Duffin (sax/synth) and Steve Nuttall (percussion) they’ve shared bands, mixed each other’s records, promoted live shows and made music videos together in and around Leeds.

As Holodrum, this is the seven-piece’s debut album, but the interlocking grooves and hot headiness of their repeato-rock-via-CBGBs dopamine hits have in one way or other been fermenting for years.

“When it comes to doing music most bands fall between two extremes of doing it for some goal or as an end to itself” says Shjipstone. “I think Holodrum is about the joy and complexity of living, and I just hope to god everyone gets to have a good time doing it.”

Ultimately the core of the group comes from Shjipstone and his former Hookworms bandmates Benn, Nash and Wilkinson. After their abrupt dissolution in late 2018, the four of them spent six months apart; Benn still had Xam Duo, his ongoing project with Virginia Wing and some-time James Holden & The Animal Spirits live member Duffin, Nash remains vocalist and guitarist of long-running DIY rockers Cowtown and helms his solo project Game_Program; and Shjipstone plays guitar with Yard Act.

However, the four of them missed the sixth sense synergy they’d built-up playing together over a decade and soon enough demos were being swapped and new ideas were discussed.

Black Country, New Road drop video for ‘Concorde’

Black Country, New Road have dropped a new music video for the band’s latest single, “Concorde.”

The six-minute video combines a range of motion and scenery. According to  video director Maxim Kelly: “”On the surface, the concept was straightforward, a walking video: An Ant from “up there”, sings Concorde.

But, for a band who namecheck everyone from Scott Walker to Kanye West, and the pronounced mix of genres in their music, it felt right to take an analogous approach with the visuals. Throw as many references together as possible and see if we, too, could get it all to hold together as a piece.”

“We took the 6 minute+ runtime as an asset,” Kelly continues. “It gave us the time needed to weave as much as possible into the film. A walking video in parts, but also with a narrative running through. We combined miniatures with VFX, and flanked the film with archival footage.”

The song itself is an advance from the band’s upcoming sophomore release,  Ants From Up There, set for release February 4th, 2022.

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ Set to Alt/Indie Rock Songs

THIS IS something completely different, and even unconventional. A playlist like no other . Many of the tracks we chose are not available on streaming networks so we linked all of the tracks below.

The concept is simple: match as close as possible great indie, alt. rock and some classic rock songs with the famous stanzas to the classic Christmas poem, ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas.’

The songs that accompany each stanza are not meant to be literal, and not necessarily related to Christmas or the holidays in many instances. Nor is this playlist meant to be religiously-slanted or centric – just all about sharing music and goodwill.

Please share on Facebook, Twitter and your other favorite socials. Love :)

M83 shares video and trilogy plans for ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ Reissue

Indie veteran Anthony Gonzalez, aka M83, has jumped into his time machine and traveled back to 2011 – the year of the brilliant M83 album Hurry Up We’re Dreaming.  Now, he has a new video of “My Tears Are Becoming A Sea” to share.

The revisiting of Hurry Up We’re Dreaming involves a larger video trilogy project for the album tracks  “Midnight City,” “Reunion,” and “Wait,”  directed by Sacha Barbin and Ryan Doubiago. Gonzalez will also drop a 10th-anniversary orange vinyl edition of the album (April 15 via Mute).

Doubiago clarified in a press release: “this story takes place 10 years earlier in order to highlight the first moment one of these children uses their supernatural gifts.

On the way to the hospital and moments before his birth, the child’s parents are victims of a horrible car accident. The unborn child is forced to use his powers to save them from within the womb.

The idea was to show the literal birth of a superhero. We wanted to place this story in a realistic and universal setting. We think that the panic created by this magnificent moment speaks to everyone.

We also wanted to pay homage to the mothers who are too often absent from the mythology of superheroes. And finally, to go beyond the codes of the genre to carry a symbolic message of hope where future generations would come to save us from a dark fate.”

Best Flashback Tracks feat. PLOY, Crash Island, The Colourful Band, Mike Amerika, Richard The Lionhearted

Flashback Tracks is one of IRC’s longest running song/artist profile series. There is plenty to flashback too. When we do Flashback Tracks we are looking specifically for songs that we think didn’t get enough notice for how good they were.

So, let’s get it on. We’ll know by your likes and shares if the Flashback Tracks series is something you’d like more of. And if so, we’ll also start including more “popular” (or ‘mainstreamed’) indie bands and artists’ archival material worth noting. That’s always a difficult task when it’s tens of thousands of superb songs over just the past decade alone.

Please like and share (it helps spread the music). Support DIY/indie musicians!

PLOY – Washington, D.C.
Crash Island – Cardiff, England
The Colourful Band – Edinburgh, Scotland
Mike Amerika – Sewell, New Jersey
Richard The Lionhearted – Columbia, Missouri

PLOY – “Fool”

D.C. based duo PLOY makes music that causes people to “think and groove all at once,” according to vocalist Gil Wojcik.

His partner, Justin Victoria, is an old friend. Together, they love great music that is unique and original and decided to make some of their own.

“We think we have something special. I hope you like us.”

Influences: The strokes, Washed out, Two Door Cinema Club, Radiohead, Kanye West, Wild Nothing, Dashboard Confessional, Andrew Bird.

Crash Island – “Nothing’s Fine”

The story of Crash Island is about the wandering Basque/Spanish songwriter – Jeremy Levy – who washed up in Cardiff, his chance London encounter with a keyboard and guitar-wielding French octopus, their mutual acquaintance introduction to a bass rumbling, Jacques Cousteau-hatted French barista and subsequent London-born, and a South African-born, punk rock-inspired shakeup on drums?

The result? Warm. Cold. Passionate. Sophisticated. Raw. Honest.

The Colourful Band – “Stars”

In 2012, having just returned from Australia, Edinburgh, Scotland indie trio decided on a name – The Colourful Band – which came from “the contrast in how much color there is in countries with sunshine, compared with home,” says guitarist Jon Tyler.

TCB’s debut EP, recorded at Chem19 with acclaimed Scottish producer Andy Miller (Sons and Daughters, Mogwai, Arab Strap, The Fratellis), was well received locally.

One of the songs, “Stars” was licensed to the BBC for a TV drama giving the music some national and international play.

That spurred the formation of the band featuring Tyler, Steve Tonge on bass, and Dave Curry on drums.

A follow-up mini-album was home-recorded with a limited number of copies printed. The band sold them exclusively at shows as they toured around the globe.

The band has opened for artists and bands such as Jeremy Jay, The Corncrakes, Biffy Clyro, Yusuf Azak and are influenced by The Strokes, Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Belle and Sebastian.

Mike Amerika – “Impossible Girl”

Sewell, New Jersey solo artist Mike Mazzeo, who has been creating blistering rock music under the moniker Mike Amerika since 2010, released a spectacular DIY debut album in 2012, In The Business to Burn.

Together with bassist John Hughes and drummer Steph Brettman, his songs evolved from demo solo recordings to a debut album that generated plenty of buzz on blogs and zines.

The trio has also performed shows in and around Sewell. Not surprisingly Mike Amerika is influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Weezer, and Chuck Berry.

Richard The Lionhearted – “Miss Smith”

Columbia, Missouri’s psych-rock indie band Richard the Lionhearted‘s debut release, Outliers, is a six-song EP recorded, mixed, and DIY-style by the band in early 2012.

Outliers received favorable reviews from both critics and listeners: “melodic, moody guitars, British Invasion-era backbeats, creative time changes, and surprisingly soulful crooning,” wrote the Columbia Daily Tribune. Not long after, the news outlet named the band as one of four local bands “poised to enjoy a big 2012.”

In 2011, the band played several festivals and a handful of shows along the east coast and Midwest opening for national acts Other Lives, Oberhofer, Youth Lagoon, Tapes ‘n Tapes, Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, and Jessica Lea Mayfield.

Influences: The Byrds, The Stones, Black Sabbath, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers, Townes Van Zandt, among others.

Ty Segall’s new video single and North American tour dates

ty-segall-feel-good

One of indie/alt rock’s best artists of the past decade, San Francisco guitarist and songwriter Ty Segall, has dropped a new video single, “Feel Good.”

And, yes, it does feel good, in an edgy, swaggering way. “Feel Good” chugs along with a throbbing beat and spikey guitar riffs. Denee Segall lends sultry vocals and attire throughout. The storyline features the couple in various poses and driving an old 70’s gas-guzzler through the nighttime streets marked by vivid technicolor scenes.

It is from his riveting new album, Harmonizer, directed and produced by Joshua Erkman.

Segall also dropped a new tour list for a North American tour with the Freedom Band featuring of Ben Boye, Mikal Cronin, Emmett Kelly, and Charles Moothart.

According to Denée Segall, the track is meant to reaffirm the concept that whatever makes someone ‘feel good’ should be unrestrained, even encouraged “be it emotionally, physically, or beyond. It’s also about extending this sentiment to another who might desire this same sort of freedom but needs a little encouragement. It’s an ode to the joy that comes from loving and supporting one another unconditionally.”

Go-to assistant producer Cooper Crain was instrumental in creating the sound on Harmonizer. The LP is the first album to be recorded in Segall’s brand-new Harmonizer Studios.

From the blog Northern Transmissions: “Cooper’s own journey in rhythm, minimalism and DIY mines the depths around Ty’s vocal attack and the never-ending search for unfathomably corrosive guitar sounds. With an eye towards precision, feel, and explosive mass.”

Top 10 Indie Rock Songs, May 2021

The Top 10 Indie Songs for May 2021 features a sweeping diversity of indie artists and bands, including a number of true DIYs that got our attention. This top 10 playlist is infectiously enjoyable especially when the world is coming back to life. Thank goodness indie rock is thriving in 2021. There are six entries from the U.K.!; three from the U.S. and one from France.

This playlist of our top picks (based on what we actually got to hear) include terrific releases from:

  • Mar Malade (U.K.)
  • FUR (U.K.)
  • Camel Power Club (France)
  • St. Vincent (New York)
  • Hazey (U.K.)
  • Massage (California)
  • Mia Joy (Illinois)
  • Ski Lift (U.K.)
  • Bliss Williams (U.K.)
  • Ali Horn (U.K)

Not intentionally nor by design, these Top 10 Indie Rock Songs for May 2021 are mostly feel-good, upbeat and celebratory. So put your happy shoes on and enjoy. The full Spotify and Soundcloud playlists are included at the end of the post.

This song just had to be the opening track on this particular playlist. U.K. band Mar Malade delivers the summer-time goods on “No Bird (Mr. Hardy)” with its undeniably upbeat, feel-good single booming with tropical-influenced beats and riffs, accompanied by horns and a bumbling, drooping bass line. The song is one of the little hidden gems we love coming across, and sharing.

U.K. indie rock band FUR has returned with two very noteworthy new singles, including the electrifying track, “If Only,” featured here, and which has been on repeat in the cafe for weeks, along with the other track, “The Fine Line of a Quiet Life.” Indie rock is a vague term used to identify rock artists that are or were unsigned, or have signed to small record labels, rather than major record labels. It may also describe artists which have a specific “sound”, and is therefore a genre, although this label is contested by many.:

The Paris indie band Camel Power Club‘s latest track, “Drunken Dreams,” (featuring Racoon Racoon) is impossible to ignore thanks to its mellow but catchy rhythms and melodies, as well as arguably an indie anthemic groove for 2021. We’ll still be playing this track years from now. Camel Power Club is an indie rock band based in Paris, France.

Indie veteran St. Vincent rarely misses the mark with her releases, which is one reason she has amassed a large and loyal following over the past 10+ years. With her recent recollective of her father’s record collection, she serves up another gem, including the reflective single, “Down.”

The more chill, grooving single, “Half A Feeling,” from Los Angeles indie band Massage is a kickback-and-relax song for a summer day. The band has been increasing its visibility among music lovers in the past few years thanks to the indie love their 2018 debut album, Oh Boy, garnered. Now, the follow-up recent release of Still Life has picked up strong reviews from the blogs and zines.

Another U.K. band, this time the Bristol indie duo of Tim Brown (guitar; vocals) and Justin Wilkins (drums; vocals), aka Hazey, make the list with their intricate mix of ethereal guitars and synth rhythms. Hazy is influenced by The Killers, Deaf Havana, Pale Waves, and The Cure. Perhaps the most sombre track on this playlist, the song is ironically titled “Bliss.”

We dug Chicago indie dream-pop artist Mia Joy as soon as her new single “See Us” hit the webs. The soft, whispery track, and meditative, emotive synth keys, conjures up images of floating on a puffy white cloud on a gorgeous summer day and just being happy. It’s the perfect track to chill to and even fall in love too. Joy recently signed to FireTalk Records.

London-based threesome, Ski Lift, returns with their sophomore single, “Portal,” assembled with addictive energy; a sharp, driven guitar riff; and melodic vocals to make it almost an instant for the top 10 for May.

Bliss Williams – “Falling For You”

Yet another London, and U.K., entry on this top 10. One-man recording artist Bliss Williams‘ track, “Falling For You,” was featured in our last In Dee Mail edition, and now in the Top 10. As Williams describes, the single features “sweeping strings [that] melt into harmonies far more precise than the yearning-tumbling…all served on a bed of punchy backbeat and bass groove.”

Ali Horn – “End Credits”

It only seemed appropriate to place a single called “End Credits” at the end of a playlist. But don’t let the song’s position in the playlist indicate its awesomeness as a great track in the top 10. Notice the cheerily, upbeat chorus (‘sing a happy song/happy song’), the bouncy rhythm and beat, and your tapping foot. Ali Horn is based out of Liverpool (England); making him one of six English indie bands or artists in this playlist.

[Editor’s Note]: For a relatively small country (especially in comparison to the U.S.), the number of spectacular bands, artists, and genres of rock/pop music that has come out of England since The Beatles up to today is dazzling. Considering that the U.S. has remained four to six times larger in population than England for the past half of a century-plus, ratio-wise you can say they’ve got us beat as far as one country just dominating pop and rock since 1964.

Top 10 Indie Songs, Feb. 2021 – Melpo Mene, Three Day Monk, Iyarkai, Elephant, VOTNM

melpo-mene
Swedish indie sensation Melpo Mene tops IRC’s February Top 10 Songs

This Top 10 Indie Songs playlist for February 2021 is perhaps one of our favorite top 10 song playlists of the past year, and we had just said the same about the January Top 10 Indie Songs playlist (recommended listening!).

The staff at IRC has shared and listened to these tracks (and many others that didn’t make the cut) over and over again. We agree that not only are these tracks our favorite 10 songs from February but still will be among the top 2021 indie tracks by the time the end-of-year playlists come out.

IRC chooses tracks carefully. We listen for songs that are original, different, heartfelt, well-crafted, and of course, brimming with talent from new, or newly discovered, indie bands and artists from around the USA and the world. (See below for our mini-reviews of each track). March Top 10 Songs is coming up soon.

The Top 10 Indie Rock Songs, Feb. 2021

1. Our No. 1 track for February goes to Swedish musician Melpo Mene (new aka is ‘heyMelpo’). IRC has been a big fan of Mene going all of the way back to our earliest years posting about under-the-radar DIY/small label artists. The first time we heard Mene it was a tiny miracle – “wow, who the bleep is this?”, we inquired. That amazing, totally – totally – original voice, and sweeping atmospheric melodic hooks are back with this new energized and uplifting single, “Wrong At Last.”

2. A sparse, somber acoustic ballad from DIY indie outfit Three Day Monk with soft, hauntingly beautiful vocals; light drum beats, swirling flutes; one of the most original and raw lo-fi indie tracks of 2021

3.  Iyarkai‘s “Rijul Chakraborthy” is a transformative, soaring, dream-like track with faint eastern influences set to new-age-like instrumentations and sound effects that include chirping birds, flutes, and slight touches of auto-tune.   It’s almost impossible not to be touched by this track.

4.   This is the first track we’d ever heard from the Dutch indie band Elephant and it hit us right in the heart and ears. this is a song you feel, and there’s even a little bit of a BeeGees vibe to this terrifically melodic and upbeat track.

5.   not a fourth of july song in the way you’d expect – but Victims of the New Math (VOTNM) deliver quiet, slumbering, light strum on guitar with filtered, almost distant vocals and featuring a neat little acoustic duel (don’t jump!)

6.  DWP with their minimalistic recording approach – love it! – ground together with pulsating keys and dual guitar jams paralleled with spoken vocals – think The Fall but with a strange and ominous dance element added in (#1 or 2)

7.   “The Other End” is an uplifting single from indie-rock collective Solar Strides. This track sonically combines the nostalgic with the contemporary, as the record brims with foot-tapping, spirited instrumentals and features the crystal clear vocals of India Foskett.

8 “Wasted” from UK DIY band Colour Tongues‘ debut album insinuates a negativity that the lyrics, dream-pop vibe, and melodies completely knockdown. Song lyrics reminisce of realizing one’s own self-worth and self-love, and that there is no time ever again to be ‘wasted’ on anyone.

9.  Short but booming full-throttle rock with a garage/punk edge, shouted (but works) catchy chorus, and streetwise attitude from the alt. rock band Harker.

10 – Weezer’s “All My Favorite Songs” is a solid track but it’s a bit too commercially slanted so it goes down a few notches to the end here for the former indie veterans now mainly commercial sellouts.
