Best New Releases from No Age, Deerhunter, Abe Vigoda, Owen Pallett, Pete Yorn, OMD, Women, The Posies, Neil Young, Lloyd Cole

It’s another big, big week for new releases from some of our favorite indie bands and artists, including LA’s lo-fi, experimental outfit, No Age; the fifth studio LP from Deerhunter is a tour de indie with songs of psych-rock and electro-pop as only they can deliver; and the newest release from Abe Vigoda should be a welcome delight for the band’s fans, and one of the ‘break-through bands’ of 2008, Women, return with Public Strain, the follow-up to their acclaimed, self-titled debut .

One of the greatest songwriters ever, Neil Young, returns with yet another album, Le Noise. Young, one of the  most prolific and longest-lasting rock icons of all-time, throws fans another well-executed change-up on  Le Noise, produced by Daniel Lanois. We just don’t get why their isn’t a postable MP3; that fact does make you wonder: “why not?” If the decision is Neil’s, that’s just bogus.

The long-awaited Pete Yorn fresh LP is out, and the celebrated indie rock singer-songwriter has give IRC exclusive permission to share three songs with all of you. The self-titled, 11-track album was produced by the one and only Frank Black (The Pixies). The 2010 Polaris Prize nominee and Arcade Fire moonlighter, Owen Pallett, returns with a new EP, If that wasn’t enough, check out a double-shot from one of our 2009 bands to watch, The Hush Now; the first album in 14 years from OMD, and the first new release from San Diego’s Three Mile Pilot since 1997, plus and The Posies ping the musical switchboard with their first new material in five years.

There are also releases from a bunch of lesser-known, but very promising, indie bands we think many of you will dig, including newbies Grandchildren, who drop their debut, Everlasting; plus, Monolithic Cloud Parade; Breath Owl Breath; In Grenada;  Twin Shadow; Paleo; Eternal Summers; Highlife; Glasser; Loyd Cole; Echo Orbiter, and the list goes on. There are other bands that would be listed here, such as Floored by Four and Electric Six, but they don’t apparently make even one MP3 available, which is to their detriment in the MP3 age. We’ve always contended that bands that don’t offer a MP3 to music lovers are shooting themselves in the foot – missing out on potential free press, and alienating themselves from existing and would-be fans.

As with all of IRC’s playlist mixes, you can stream this entire mix of fresh tracks uninterrupted by clicking on the first song and letting it run. And, all are free, legal MP3s that you can save by right-clicking on the track and selecting ‘Save As.’ Enjoy.

In Dee Mail 2010, Vol. V: People On The Moon, The KABBs, Non-Commissioned Officers, Skytone, Kate Martin

In Dee Mail playlists have been one of the most popular features of Indie Rock Cafe for a couple of years now. The series has uncovered an amazing array of talented artists and bands from across the United States, and throughout the world. They are singer and songwriters, shoegaze rock bands, indie orchestra pop collectives, and one man glo-fi introverts with a MacBook and cheap gear.

So far this year, we’ve had SO many great songs sent to us by artists and bands that most people have never heard of, but we’ve also fallen a bit behind. The tremendous amount of work that goes into reviewing dozens and dozens of submissions to pick the best few from each lot is time-consuming, but rewarding. We do our best to keep up with all of the submissions, but it’s time to play some catch up.

Over the next few weeks, there will be a number of In Dee Mail Special Edition posts. Chances are most of the music you hear in these posts you will not hear anywhere else. We also encourage you to click on the In Dee Mail category link above to listen to and download past mixes in this series; full of great songs from bands you’ve probably never heard of.

Crank up the grit and get ready to rock with this freakish mix of Black Sabbath and The White Stripes from Chico, California rock band People on the Moon. The band definitely got our attention with this track, and we’ve spun it already probably half a dozen times. Home-grown, psychedelic  garage rock, tinged with Rush-era keys, is a rare species these days on indie rock blogs and websites. The only issue with have with this band is the name; it doesn’t really match the style of the music.

“Falls”People On The Moon

The KABBs

San Diego’s The KABBs spit bluesy lyrics as a steady romp and angling guitar chords simmer along side a thumping bass. We’ve got them officially on radar now as another band to watch, among so many others. Now let’s see them catch a little fire from all of you out there with the ears for what works and doesn’t.

“Golden and Blue”The KABBs

“Down This Road”The KABBs

Non-Commissioned Officers

Non-Commissioned Officers first came to our attention after we featured the impressive indie rock band The Vermicious K’nids – the latter of was a Band to Watch in February; and which was a big hit with all of you at the time. And for good reason – they rock!  Some of the band members from VK also play hooky with The Non-Commissioned Officers, and they went ahead and sent a couple of tracks that we have to share with you.

“Just North”Non-Commissioned Officers

“Love Will Conquer All” Non-Commissioned Officers

Stockholm

A couple of months ago, we featured a couple of songs from the band Stockholm and they received a positive response from IRC readers and visitors.  Spirited and upbeat, almost epic, perfectly timed transitions, the seedlings of a band to keep an eye and ear out for, even if they do sound a bit too Billboard, teeny bopper oriented.

“Bad By Design” Stockholm

Kate Martin

Set worlds apart from the grit and naughtiness of the first artists in this mix, Kate Martin is the refreshing anti-thesis, with her sweet, well-honed vocals, and nice girl folk pop persona. But there’s a not-so-innocent story here.

“Lua” Kate Martin

River City Extension

OK, so, we’re going to switch gears again here, and take a trip down to New Jersey? (yes) to hear the spirited, full-throttle countryish folk rock with horns on the track “Friends and Family” from a band making a big splash in our little Conor Oberst greets the Avett Brothers pond. For those of you who are really up on their music, you may have seen this band opening at one time for bands from CAKE to Gogol Bordello, and Floggy Molly to Manchester Orchestra.

“Friends and Family”River City Extension

Skytone

This next band brings us back to childhood days of AM pop rock radio. Make us feel shinny, happy and warm. This is a high-octane, sugary summer song that sounds like Seals and Crofts on Planet Cheeky Clean. But, admit it, we all have a little bit of sap in our blood. And, to boot, it has such a charm of unity and love. The band, Skytone, sound like pros, and regardless of this track’s squikie sweet blissfulness, are sure to make some fans among our loyal readers.

“We Are One”Skytone

Backball False, Truth

The following songs are the work of one guy from New York City with the unusual name moniker, Backball False, Truth! We included both the songs he sent in; yet another one man band that impresses us (by the way, we have another installment of One Man Bands coming soon).

“De Rigueur”Backball, False, Truth!

“We Will Be Realized”Backball, False, Truth!

And, others that we simply don’t have time to write about. But the music speaks for itself.

“Cruise That Voice” James Melaugh

“BMX”City of Satellites

“Cabin in the Woods” –  Alarma Man

“Drinking Song”Loveseat

“Machines” Cousin Dud

Best New Releases from The Pass, A Classic Education, The Moaners, The Migrant, Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s

The first few bands included in this week’s Best New Releases include fairly unknown bands; and therein is our point. The Pass are a self-described psychedelic/new wave pop band from Louisville, Kentucky. Earlier this year they crossed our radar when they sent us their first single, “Cross Walk Stereo.” The song made into our  Top Ten songs chart. Later, we got a hold of the second single, “Treatment of the Sun”.

Slowly, The Pass is building a following, and no wonder. We’ve decided to feature both of first singles, plus the band’s latest single, “Trap of Mirror”, released to promote today’s unveiling of their debut LP, BURST.

Next up, Italian orchestra-pop band A Classic Education flashed across the indie radar screens last year, following their apperances during last October’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York. The  band are set to perform a number of shows at CMJ 2010 next month, including an October 20th show at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn. Plus, check out great tracks from Vincent Minor, The Moaners, Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s, and many others.

5 Bands That Rock! Vol. V: Bang Bang Eche, Awesome Color, Children Collide, and Bottle Up and Go

After reviewing so many submissions, we occasionally find, and share with you, great and promising bands that otherwise don’t get the attention they deserve because the world is fucking unfair! Now rock that shit!

[zbplayer]

Bang Bang Eche were never going to let being from New Zealand’s South Island town of Christchurch impede their success. For a band that formed less than three years ago, the distance covered by BBE’s tour bus is as impressive as their blistering, unabashed, and impassioned live shows.

Their unique brand of thrilling dance-punk causes a stir where ever they go, whether it’s with loyal fans who were with the band from the get-go or unknowing and awestruck audiences from New York’s CMJ and Austin’s SXSW festival, to the UK’s Great Escape and Sound City fests.

The band’s debut UK release SONIC DEATH C**TTTT is, as the title may suggest, a purposeful attempt to shake things up. From the first few bars of opener “Fist Full of Dollars,” there is a sense of youthful urgency that is unmistakable; extroverted front man, Zach Doney’s fast paced vocals are unleashed with a fierceness that is only matched by Charlie Ryder’s guitars and synth cuts and the explosive power of drummer James Sullivan and bassist T’Nealle Worsley.

Bang Bang Eche’s hardcore post-punk mixed with dance bass lines creates an insubordinate adolescent sound that is hard to ignore. Because we missed them at SXSW due a scheduling conflict, we’re trying to make up for it now by introducing BBE to a larger audience.

“Fingers in the Till”Bang Bang Eche from Sonic Death Cu-tttt

Awesome Color – Detroit, MI

Hailing from the once world capital of auto manufacturing, Detroit’s Awesome Color has an unlikely name in comparison to their hard-hitting punk/psychedelic rock sound. Their band name is more fitting of a feel-good 60’s pop retro band, but who the heck cares? Awesome Color deliver their huge following consistently well-produced, guitar-driven rock that have kept them going for years.

“Eyes of Light” Awesome Color from Electric Aborigines

Children Collide – Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne has spawned yet another electrifying rock band with Children Collide, who released their 2009 debut LP, The Long Now, under the guidance of producer Dave Sardy (Dandy Warhols, Oasis, Wolfmother, Jet). The band’s signature sound of punk infused, artistic guitar rock has won them praise from bloggers and the mainstream music press. The band was first featured on IRC last summer; here’s a follow-up track.

“Brave Robot”Children Collide from The Long Now

Bottle Up and Go – Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn blues rock duo Bottle Up and Go combine garage rock with indie sensibilities that result in nicely baked songs that tempt you to play them again and again. The band made a strong impression on attendees, bloggers and press at last year’s CMJ in NYC, and are scheduled to return when the fest kicks off next month.

“Wayward Son”Bottle Up and Go from These Bones

Just Play The Music! – Stars, Les Savy Fav, We Are Scientists, Panda Bear, Maps & Atlases

Opus Orange together with IRC are giving away FOUR free downloads of this awesome debut EP. Just RT this post and type “I Love Opus Orange” (or in a Comment for our Facebook folks) – and Monday we will pick four winners.

What a saah-weeet week for indie rock lovers. In fact, this is bang-a-gong week of new releases from bands you’ve surely heard of, and others you may not know but have the chance to by playing this huge mix of new songs. This is simply one of those rare weeks when it seems half of the best new releases of the year come out in one day.

Best Rarely Heard Songs from Kinisi, The Spruce Campbells, Little Gold, Household Names, Skeletons With Flesh On Them, Drag City

We’re playing catch up; there’s a bunch of great music that has been piling up that you need to hear. Please excuse us for not providing more details and reviews of these songs. Afterall, the music – as it always does – speaks for itself. Tell us what you like and don’t like.

This first song we want to share with you today is from the unsigned duo from Atlanta, Georgia, Kinisi, Greek for “movement”. We just dig the organic beauty of the dream pop gem “Beach Frogs”.  Kinisi is the creative project of Speros Constantine Kokenes, with contributions from folk singer-songwriter Maxwell Dale Creagh Roll.

Kokenes and Roll first met in a high school guitar class when they were paired up on a piece of classical music. While rivals of sorts at first, they have since collaborated on numerous projects.

The result are wide arrangements of electric guitars and pseudorhythmic electronic beats that flow across genres. While Kokenes’ musical influences include Radiohead and Elliott Smith, there’s something about this music that reminds us more of American Analog Set.

Cleveland, Ohio band The Spruce Campbells sent us in some songs, as did Little Gold, Skeletons With Flesh On Them, Drag City, My Pet Dragon and one unknown artist.

Indie Spotlight: Air Waves, Dazzle Ships, Dana Falconberry, The Strange Boys and Dinosaur Bones

Now back from Musicfest NW, it’s time to catch up on some bands that we’ve been wanting to tell you about. Today we want to tell you about five bands that you indie die-hards probably already know about, but many others don’t. These are five bands that made noise in the beginning of the year, but seem to have faded a bit. They are Airwaves, Dazzle Ships, Dana Falconberry, The Strange Boys and Dinosaur Bones.

Air Waves – Brooklyn, NY

Just days after returning from their debut European tour, Air Waves hit the road on a double-bill with Seattle’s Past Lives (featuring ex-members of The Blood Brothers). Earlier this year, when Pitchfork’s Guest List asked Dan Deacon what his favorite new band was; he said Air Waves: “Nicole Schneit is an amazing songwriter. The music she writes is like a favorite blanket wrapped around you. Drummer Dave Ferraro complements her songs well. “Shine On” is my current favorite song by them.”

Already in a short time span, Air Waves have not only made a name for themselves in Brooklyn, but elsewhere by touring extensively and sharing the stage with such notable acts like Cat Power, and The Rapture to name a few.

“Shine One”Air Waves from Airwaves

“Sweetness”Air Waves from Airwaves

Dazzle Ships – Los Angeles

Playing a sold out show in LA and sharing a stage with Memory Tapes is a pretty big deal for an up and coming indie band that no one has heard of. In fact, it is a fairly impressive accomplishment in the saturated market of indie rock – which is more popular now then ever before.

That’s exactly what happened with Dazzle Ships, a musical duo consisting of Tyler Haran and Haiti De Leon. The pair set out to make music that celebrates the artists who influence them the most – David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Cocteau Twins, to name a few. Dazzle Ships make what they label “experimental pop music”; out of a phobia of doing the same song twice, they try to radically shift roles and techniques during their song writing process.

In March, the duo released their debut, Least Resistance seven-inch that was premiered on Stereogum.

Dana FalconberryAustin, Texas

Austin’s hometown girl turned respected musician Dana Falconberry has been called by The Austin Chronicle as one of the music city’s “most arresting female vocalists” and “most promising singer-songwriters” following the release of her LP,  Halletts, featuring a full band which she has toured with successfully this year, including five shows at South By Southwest.

“Nightingale”Dana Falconberry from Halletts

The Strange Boys – Austin, TX

So, yes, Austin bands are a common thread in this post – but that’s because the home of SXSW and ACL, is full of great bands, like indie southern rock, R&B country band The Strange Boys. They’ve been on the radar since the early part of the past decade. Last year, however, the band underwent some line-up changes, including the addition of two former members of the disbanded group Mika Miko.

Earlier this year, the band released one of their best LPs, Be Brave.

“Be Brave” – The Strange Boys from Be Brave

“Night Might” – The Strange Boys from Be Brave

Dinosaur BonesToronto, Canada

The best for last: Dinosaur Bones are “Hawaiian” indie pop rock band from Toronto, Canada who have busted through in the past year to gain a fairly solid following. In 2008, the band released their debut, self-titled EP, and garnered critical acclaim from media outfits and blogs like Billboard, NOW magazine, CityTV, Chromewaves, HOUR Weekly and others.

In late 2009, Dinosaur Bones entered the studio with producer Jon Drew (F*cked Up, Tokyo Police Club, the Arkells) to lay down the foundation for their long-anticipated debut LP, which was released February 1, 2010 – consider it a preview of what is to come.

Portland’s MusicfestNW 2010 Opens with Panda Bear, The Thermals, Ra Ra Riot, A.A. Bondy; Some 200 Artists and Bands in Five Days

Thursday night was the big kick-off for the 10th annual Musicfest NW festival in Portland, Oregon. Indie bands and artists like The Thermals, Ra Ra Riot, Red Fang, Rocky Votolato, A. A Bondy, Justin Townes Earle, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Phantogram, and dozens more artists opened the little-known, five-day music festival.

Officially, the fest opened Wednesday night with a sold out crowd at Crystal Ballroom to see Panda Bear. The set included some new material from the upcoming LP, Tomboy, from the musician otherwise known as Noah Lennox of Animal Collective. Lennox operated his keys and boxes in the dark with a guitar strapped on while a modern day version of psychedelic images flashed and oozed on a large screen behind the stage.

“Slow Motion” – Panda Bear

After a near sleep-inducing few opening songs, Lennox fired things up, and the packed crowd finally got going with “Comfy in Nautica” and his new single, “Slow Motion”. But we heard many people in attendance, especially the youngest among them, complain that the show was “slow” and “boring”; perhaps they were expecting more Animal Collective than Lennox wanted to give.

The line outside Portland's Wonder Ballroom for Ra Ra Riot

On Thursday, the real first full day of the fest, there were shows at nearly a dozen venues across the city. Some venues were too far from the center of downtown to make it worth the round trip, but, nonetheless, the official schedule sports an extensive, and diverse (but definitely indie heavy), line-up to fill up five days of shows at nearly two-dozen venues throughout the downtown Portland area. The venues range from schools to theaters, saloons to clubs, recording studios to coffee houses, and city squares to ballrooms.

We were a little surprised that The Portland Tribune didn’t mention that Georgia’s one man band and synth pop student, Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, and Saratoga Springs, New York electronica, shoegaze duo Phantogram were opening for Ra Ra Riot’s show ;ast night at The Wonder Ballroom. The venue is quite a far distance from the downtown area, but worth the trip for some shows.  For example, on Friday, Male Bonding, Surfer Blood and Black Lips will perform at The Wonder Ballroom.

The Thermals got the floor shaking at the Crystal Ballroom

After Ra Ra Riot – the Syracuse, New York indie band who have had the number one song on IRC for the past two weeks (“Boy”)- we headed back to downtown proper, and returned to the Crystal Ballroom to catch Ted Leo and the Pharmacists who will be opening for Portland’s hometown post-punk/alternative rockers, The Thermals. We predict the show will be sold out.

“Boy” Ra Ra Riot

“I Don’t Believe You” – The Thermals

The buzz band of 2010, Surfer Blood, will rock the Wonder Ballroom Friday

Friday evening brings yet another maze of choices of bands and venues; we plan on catching as many shows as possible, including Male Bonding, Surfer Blood, Black Lips – all at The Wonder Ballroom, plus, Candy Claws, Astrology, Dan Mangan, Magic Kids, Okkervil River (or Man Man – hmmm, decisions…) Thee Oh Sees, and the late night/early morning show by The Builders & The Butchers at Berbati’s Pan, right up to 2.a.m.

“Swim” Surfer Blood

“Sunbeam Show” Candy Claws

“Superball” Magic Kids

“Road Regrets” Dan Mangan

On Saturday, September 11th, Portland’s famous Pioneer Courthouse Square will transform into one of the best venues of MusicfestNW’s five-day run. From 4pm to 9pm, the scheduled line up in order:  Weinland, Blue Giant, and Laura Veirs.   Closing out the night’s performances in the square will be Portland’s acclaimed native sons, The Decemberists.

“Wide Eyed, Legless” Laura Veirs

“Oceanside” The Decemberists

Afterwards, for the evening shows, we plan to catch The Globes, Unnatural Helpers, Akron/Family, Menomena, The Dodos and whatever else comes up; for example,
there was a last-minute show last night from Japanther.

“Five Little Rooms” – Menomena

“Sunshine/Pretty Girls”Unnatural Helpers

“Fables” The Dodos

Shows we won’t be able to see because we’re staying in the downtown area (we’ve seen all these bands before, anyways) include The Smashing Pumpkins (what’s left of them), Free Energy, Titus Andronicus, Suckers, Japandroids and so on. With the exception of the Smashing Pumpkins, we caught all of those bands at South by Southwest (lots of free MP3s) last March.

The Walkmen will open for The National at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Sunday

On Sunday, the last day of the fest, there are only four shows in Pioneer Square – Talkdemonic, The Helio Sequence, The Walkmen and The National. We’re hoping this weekend will bring some sunny, blue skies, but so far, Portland has been typically Pacific Northwest – overcast and mild.

“In The New Year” – The Walkmen

“Bloodbuzz Ohio” The National

From the ‘blogger’ perspective, MusicfestNW has a charm that is all it’s own, and part of that is because MFNW is not besieged by mainstream press people and hundreds of bloggers, local press, TV, and so on, like the big time festivals.

It’s not entirely clear why MFNW goes largely unnoticed, but it’s safe to say that part of it must be due to the fact that the music press focuses on covering the bigger fests, and after a summer of  blockbuster festivals, and with even more festivals coming during the next seven weeks, including the amazing Austin City Limits (Oct. 8 -10); Voodoo Festival (Oct. 29 – 31), MFNW just doesn’t fit into most music press outlets’ schedules and budgets.

You can follow us on Twitter for lil’ msgs while we’re at the events themselves. Than back to regular programming next week.
