Finally, the desert of southern California is twisting away from the blazing sun, and a nice coolness is settling in. As night descends, everywhere you turn to look there cellphone lights on, like thousands of futuristic glowing jelly fish floating on the dark and calm sea. The colors of the sky, way off in the distance, fade from wisps of oranges and reds to shades of blue, purple and black.

Overhead, and seemingly closer than the night before, the magnificently bright full moon pours out its milky glow on every surface of the valley, along the edges of the sloping camel back mountains and against the towering palm trees, like ancient pillars to the gods.

Night time is falling on this the second day of the music mecca known as Coachella. Tens of thousands of people sleeping under the stars by night, and dancing, eating, drinking and listening to music by day. The majestic Ferris wheel off in the distance gets brighter as the long expanse of the heavens above turn darker, a much welcomed relief from the searing sun.  COACHELLA-2011

The sounds of electric, wood, and wind sail over this massive configuration of people, stages, vendors, skyward artworks, and palms. The air changes from odors of pizza and BBQ chicken to cannabis and incense.

The experience of being at a music festival in the middle of the desert, at the mercy of the sun by day, but under the Milky Way by night, is thankfully not a once-in-a-lifetime event. (continued at end of page)

On the main stage, Broken Social Scene were on earlier, and now Bright Eyes is rocking the masses. Coming up are Animal Collective, Mumford & Sons and Arcade Fire.  That’s a pretty sweet chunk of time featuring an A-list of indie bands, gratefully, all from the same stage. So, in celebration of Coachella, this Sunday’s S-25 Mix is dedicated to the bands, fans, and crew that make Coachella a blast to last.

The Coachella Experience

In a few hours, the last day of Coachella will have arrived. It’s always strange how fast it all goes by, but it’s always a blast. For so many people, there’s the sense of dread when late Sunday afternoon rolls around. It means the last few hours of Coachella for another year.  We will all go back from sharing this amazing experience to our regular lives

Coachella is, for some people, the ultimate experience, even a religious experience, not simply for all of the great music, but also because is shows that, for the most part, tens of thousands of different people from different lives, places and backgrounds, can come together and celebrate a common love for music and good times, to get along and respect one another, way out in the middle of the desert, detached from the ‘real world’ for a few days. Sure, it sounds really cheesy, but I think it’s what a lot of people love about Coachella.

You’ve really got to give it to all the folks that make Coachella such an awesome experience each year. And year after year, it gets better as the organizers and crews, security and operations people learn, tweak, evolve, and improve. Just for a logistical stand-point, it’s an enormous undertaking.

The one thing that we hear the most is how great the music sounds. That’s for sure – the folks that set up and manage the sound systems at Coachella are the best in the outdoor sound arena. Sure there have been glitches and imperfections, but it’s amazing to see how far music festivals like Coachella have come in the area of sound quality over the past decade.

But ultimately, it’s the bands and the fans that make the whole thing possible.  And if you think about it, live performances are really the one leg of the “music industry” that remains firmly intact. You just can’t enjoy a concert or a festival sitting on your ass streaming it on YouTube.

Bonnaroo Music Festival 2008 Music Videos featuring Metallica and Battles

photo from the Associated Press

It’s hard to believe there are only two days left in the four-day Bonnaroo Festival. So far, Bonnaroo fest goers have seen a variety of bands and musicians including Metallica, The Raconteurs, My Morning Jacket, Steve Marley, Battles, Jose Gonzales, Rilo Kiley, Willie Nelson, Tegan and Sara, MIA, The Swell Season, Les Claypool, Minus The Bear.

Here are some of the best YouTube videos from Bonnaroo from Thursday and Friday. Surprisingly, there are very few videos from Bonnaroo, unless you want to watch slices taped off a computer of the webcast.

Battles – “Atlas”

Live 105 BFD Festival with Cypress Hill, The Kills, The Kooks, Alkaline Trio, Moby, Everlast and More

Originally known as Management, the band MGMT will perform at the Live 105 BFD

San Francisco rock radio station Live 105 kicks off its annual all-day music festival next week, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mt. View, California.

This is one of the best day-long music festivals in the United States considering the ticket price – a mere $10 – and the range of popular indie artists playing at the 10-hour festival. Talk about bang for the buck!

Tickets are on sale now. IRC does not endorse any ticketing outlets, but you can click BFD ticketing (links to Google results) to find tickets.

If it is like it was last year, you can also take a chance and show up to get free tickets. People in blue coats were handing out free tickets at the gate shortly after 1 pm.

If that doesn’t happen, you’ll probably still be able to buy tickets at the box office, or if worse comes to worse, find one a scalper.

Gates open at 11:30am, festival starts at 12:00pm .

Coachella 2008 Guide: Maps, Stages, Performance Schedule

Coachella 2008 – April 25-26 – kicks off tomorrow in the desert of southern California. Here’s the full skinny on the event, with stages, maps, artists and performance times.

Survival Guide for Coachella festival-goers (Press-Enterprise) – Summarized information on how to stay cool and hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun by wearing hats and sunscreen (there is almost no shaded areas at Empire Fields), what you can and cannot bring and food options (plastic not accepted, so bring cash because ATM lines are usually very long).

You can view an Excel sheet of all three days performances (thanks to NoInput) or check out the official Coachella customizable schedule here.

Crave Online has released a Music Guide to Coachella 2008 with a detailed line-up of artists not to miss and in-depth review of performers and other events.

And of course, check out the Coachella website for all the latest. You may want to watch the AT&T BlueRoom telecast which really needs to step it up this year, especially after the huge controversy from Lollapalooza 2007 when Eddie Vedder’s anti-Bush statements were censored by AT&T, although the company says it was an accident. Yeah, and I’m King Tut.

However, perhaps to AT&T’s horror, rumors are flying around that Eddie Vedder may make a surprise appearance at Coachella this weekend. You can almost bet that if he does, he will say something to irk AT&T, so don’t be surprised if they pull the plug on him again, should he make the rumored surprise appearance.

Isle of Skye Festival 2008 Canceled Due to Debts

The Isle of Skye Music Festival has been canceled by organizers for running out of money. Festival organizers reportedly fell into the red by $500,000 Pounds. I’d love to know how and who screwed this up, especially in a year when music festivals are raking in cash. The Reading and Leeds festivals’ sold out in just days.

That’s bad news for all the rock fans in Scotland who planned to attend this year’s festival – which was considered the most “fan-friendly” of all festivals in Europe in 2006.

So, for the memories, here’s some audio and video from past Isle of Skye Music festivals.

2008 Music Festival Round-Up Report: Bamboozle Left, V Fest Australia, Lollapalooza and More SxSW

Today’s Music Festival Round Up Report, Part One:

– Bamboozle Left is on this weekend in Irvine, Califronia. Get a report, see the lineup and sample some of the fest performers’ MP3s. Read more

– The V Festival in Australia is losing money, according to billionaire tycoon Richard Branson, but he says in the long-run it will be worth it. Nevertheless, tens of thousands have turned out for the second years of the Down Under’s traveling festival, which continues this weekend. Read more

– The official line-up for Lollapalooza 2008 will be announced only hours from now and there will be a full guide to Lollapalooza posted here when it does, including the full line up of artists, videos and MP3s of the best Lolla performances and artists of last year’s event. In the meantime, here’s all the news for Lollapalooza 2008, including rumored headliners, ticket sales and the wait game. Read more...

– South by Southwest 2008 was another resounding success, proving once again that it is the king of all festivals for just about everything currently hot, and up and coming, in the world we call indie rock music, film and art.

Here are a series of articles about SxSW, and just in case you didn’t get enough of the popular music festival, the following links provide more from SxSW:

– An argument for why South by Southwest is the best music festival of all the others around the world to attend.

Bamboozle Left Festival Kicks Off Today in Irvine, California

The Bamboozle Left Fesival kicks off today, April 5th in Irvine, California and extends through the end of Sunday, April 6th.

Check back regularly for updates from Bamboozle Left’s weekend festival and get blog and media reports, photographs and videos, plus MP3s and streams of profiled artists.

Performing today on one of six stages at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (I hate how so many of our music, sporting and other venues and events have surrendered their namesakes to brands of capitalism; it really takes the ‘organic’ feel out of the event and makes you wonder why you still pay so much for tickets) include:

– All American Rejects [mp3: It Ends Tonight], Josephine Collective, Alkaline Trio [mp3: Radio], Daphne Love Derby, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore [mp3: Pressure], New Found Glory, The Bouncing Souls, The Starting Line and Valencia to name a few.

But there really are no ‘big headliners’ at Bamboozle Left that other music fests for 2008 can brag about.

Then again, the full line-up is not all that bad for the $45 single day tickets at the door, but with the dragging economy, fears of a recession and rip-off gas prices, the single day ticket price is still a bit pricey. Why not $70 for a two-day pass?

If you’re in the Irvine area and decide to go the festival last through the end of Sunday. Check back for more lineup information, performances, music, videos, blog and media reports.

Lollapalooza’s 2008 Line-up Rumors, Fakes and Speculation

(Above: This is a fake that has been circulating the Internets for the past month; it is not the official Lollapalooza lineup poster for 2008 – notice the poor Photoshop work on the “8” – somebody couldn’t find the correct font match.)

Festival organizers for Lollapalooza have yet to officially announce one artist for the August 1-3 annual rock fest in Chicago’s Grant Park.

But that hasn’t stopped the rumors, speculation, “wish lists” and flat out fabrications for Lollapalooza’s 2008 lineup.

Just this past week, the amps were turned up on the rumor machine with magazines like Paste and Rolling Stone newspapers like the Los Angeles Times and the The Grand Rapids Press announcing that artists and bands like Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are ‘rumored’ to be headliners for Lolla 08.

The Lollapalooza message boards have been lit up for weeks containing topic threads and replies for “Wanna Make a Band Suggestion?” and various other messages of “hopefuls” that are updated almost hourly with eager fans pumping out some enticing, but again totally wishful, line up schedules.

Here are a couple of tracks from the ‘best-bet’ rumored artists set to perform at Lolla 2008:

In the meantime, flashback to approximately 18 months ago: Wilco playing “Heavy Metal Drummer” at Lolla 06. Enjoy. If you are waiting for the lineup to be announced before buying your tickets, please use the comments section below to say so and why. (I’m curious.)

Chicago Tribune’s Wishy-Washy Report of ‘Headliners’ for Lollapalooza 2008 Lineup Feeds Rumor Mill

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are reported to be two of the “headliners” at Lollapalooza 2008, according to a wishy-washy report published by The Chicago Tribune last night.

The Tribune article seems to play in to the non-stop rumor game – not a good thing for a journalism organization.

The headline of the article itself implies Radiohead will headline Lollapalooza, the opening paragraph of the story states they are “expected” to perform at Lolla and the following paragraph states Radiohead has been “confirmed” and in the same paragraph the Tribune’s catch word of the day – “expected” – appears again.

That’s not just lousy journalism, but the hype comes suspiciously close to the implication that the Tribune is trying to pump some life into a local festival that some readers of this blog have ‘written off’ for 2008. Lollapalooza was canceled in 2004 after weak ticket sales, but came back strong in 2005 with some 65,000 tickets sold.

All I Need – Radiohead from In Rainbows

Isobel – Bjork (2007 Lollapalooza headline artist)

Listen to past Lollapalooza performances from archive.org

Furthermore, aside from the fact (despite the Tribune’s rumor-mill reporting) that not one artist or group has been officially confirmed to perform at this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, the Tribune makes no mention of the usually costly tickets (ranging from $65 a day up to $195 for a three-day pass in 2007, a 30% increase from the previous year’s price of $150).

Lollapalooza 2008 is set to take place in Chicago’s Grant Park August 1-3. Early bird tickets go on sale March 25th. Apparently, the early bird tickets that went on sale this week were gone in a matter of hours with many potential ticket buyers complaining about the reliability of the online early bird purchasing process.

According to the Tribune (and obviously you’ll have to take this with a grain of salt), Lollapalooza festival organizers will release the entire lineup sometime in the ‘next few weeks.’

Let’s just hope that the long wait will be worth it in the end, although it would be nice if they held the event in any other month but August (got to sell those drinks to make the vendor unions happy).

If last year’s lineup at Lollapalooza is any indication of the lineup for 2008, then it’s safe to say there’s going to be a lot more lolla than looza.

Here is an article about last year’s Lollapalooza, including videos of the performers.

If you didn’t hear about last year’s controversy regarding AT&T’s censoring of Pearl Jam, check out the link to read about it.
