Brenyama – “Things That You Do”

Increasingly known within the New Jersey music scene, the garage rock/indie pop/neo-psychedelic duo, Brenyama, just dropped the debut LP, Euphoria Love, featuring catchy, energetic pop rock with a vintage edge.

The band’s motto “to capture the fun and simplicity of early rock and roll music and the buzz of power pop,” is exactly what they’ve accomplished on standout tracks like the garage rock/pop title track, the guitar ringing, Cheap Trick meets The Ramones-like, “Things That You Do” and the irresistible old time surf rock sound of “Get In The Groove.”

MP3: “Things That You Do“Brenyama from Euphoria Love

Obviously heavily influenced by a hodge-podge of eras and genres – from the mid-1960s to late 70s classic rock era, the 80’s synth rock craze and the 90’s grunge/alt. rock movements – the songwriting team of Richard Brenner (vocals, guitar) and Maki Brenner (vocals, keys), supported by the rhythmic and percussive backbones of Brian Fahay (drums) and Luigi Sardi (bass), have something special going on.

Other tracks on the album include the atmospheric ambience of “Inhuman”; the Beatlesque/synth pop hybrid, “Small Talkin’ Head,” and the hard-driving, new wave-leaning, “Waiting For Godzilla,” which sounds a bit like it could’ve been a B52’s track back in the day, and the surprising, “Dreaming In Blue,” which reminds us a bit of The Clash mixed with J.Giels.

brendanfriel

Brendan Scott Friel – “My Light Is On”

Be prepared to be moved by Friel’s soft, comforting vocals of Windsor, Ontario singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brendan Scott Friel on standout tracks like “Moments” from his newest release, Quiet Cars.

The song, “My Light Is One,” is another track that could be a mini (or mini-plus) DIY hit, especially in singer/songwriter, Americana/folk corners of the web. We also really like the Burt Bacharach-style horns on “I Could Be Brave” – which also has hints of Conor Oberst and M. Ward.

Originally the guitarist for the band The Brilliancy, Friel travelled across the United States and Canada with the band until a bus crash a few years ago in North Dakota nearly took his life. The crash, and frustrations with overpaid producers, spurred Friel to begin a solo career.

He has opened for artists like Mariannas Trench and Big Wreck, and considers John Mayer, Passenger, Ed Sheeran, James Taylor, and Gregory Alan Isakov as his top musical influences.

Esakoff – “Home When I Get There”

Based in LA’s northern suburbs of Ventura, California, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Esakoff’s new self-titled release is his first alt. pop/rock album since the 1980s.

Back then, Esakoff went under the moniker of Mark Freddy, and in between, he concentrated his musical efforts in the world jazz band Chasm that he co-founded more than a decade ago.

Many of the songs, like the heavily melodic lo-fi retro pop rock track, “Home When I Get There,” with its witty melodies and demo-like affect, and others like the wonderful instrumental, “Butterfly Beach,” with its sunny southern California acoustic mystique, slide guitar and wind chimes ambience, or the 70’s glam/Bowie rock of “Found in Paradise,” and the mid 70’s Kinks-sounding, “Peer Pressure,” or Zappa-like “Chesses” – were written years ago while he traveling overseas.

MP3: “Home When I Get There”Esakoff from Esakoff

“Time and travels have change me,” Esakoff says. “I have a new outlook on my old tracks. The rediscovery of this music sounds better now than when I originally wrote them.”

He also uses the same guitar, an Alvarez 4950, that he originally wrote the songs on, and which is also pictured on the album cover. Back in the 80’s, he wrote and recorded over 40 songs on four different albums.

A self-professed big fan of artists like David Bowie, The Talking Heads, and XTC, Esakoff’s sound is hodge-podge of many different influences, but most notably of the 70’s and early 80’s eras. Listen to the Esakoff on Bandcamp

Haydn Rothrock

Haydn Rothrock – “Strawberry Lemonade”

Based out of the Florida city of Tampa, the new version of multi-instrumentalist and DIY bedroom artist Haydn Rothrock crafts poignant, decidedly rich rock songs like his new single, “Strawberry Lemonade” from his solo debut album, Love Equals Pain.

Rothrock is not entirely new to the growing Tampa indie scene; he’s played and recorded over the years in a number of bands covering nearly ever genre from rock to punk and pop to electronic.

MP3: “Strawberry Lemonade“Haydn Rothrock

However, his newest solo effort, marks a “huge transformation in my sound after my ex-girlfriend left me,” he says. The single – and to a large extent the album, Love Equals Pain – is a reflection of this difficult time in his life, and a centerpiece of love songs since the beginning of civilization. Whether he has gotten over his girlfriend is not clear as lyrics like “do you think about me love” indicate. Love is a bitch.

Rothrock has opened for artists like Jonatan Leandoer and Wifisfuneral, and lists his top musical influences as Tame Impala, The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club, Green Day, and Blink-182.

Mexican Dubwiser

Mexican Dubwiser – “Lecture Me”

Since relocating to Los Angeles from Monterrey, Mexico back in 2001, the eccentric and eclectic band Mexican Dubwiser has been creating what they call a ‘post futuristic/electro-cumbia sound experiments,’ featuring a fusion of electronic dance music with traditional Latin American and Caribbean rhythms – all interwoven with elements of hip hop, funk, rock, and soul.

Compared to their second and first albums, this time around on Border Frequency, the duo – Marcelo Tijerina and Ulises Lozano – has more pizazz and more party-ready tracks with guest spots from Tito Fuentes (on the track “Lecture Me”), Myron Glasper, and Self-Provoked.

There are a good number of catchy dance tracks like “La Gran Ciudad” and “Rock Your Body” and the standout tracks like “Nobody is Perfect” and “Lecture Me” where the duo really show off their skills.

cloudtapes

Cloud Tapes – “Square Peg”

Based out of New York City, the alternative rock band Cloud Tapes was formed after guitarist and vocalist John Samaras met bassist Sal Pisciotta after Samaras performed at a show in the city. Pisciotta was especially impressed with Samaras’ cover of Elliott Smith’s “Rose Parade.” That meeting led to the two writing and recording together.

In 2015, after nearly two years of work, and recruiting drummer Jeremy Talbott, the trio was ready to start recording the debut album, Familiar Feeling, which dropped that same year and was followed by a string of performances across the city, building that critical first lot of fans.

Now Cloud Tapes follow up release, If There Were a Reason, from which the tantalizing single, “Square Peg” was taken, will drop soon. With strong 90’s influences like Elliott Smith, Built to Spill, Nirvana, and Wilco, the band has a solid foundation of strong artists and bands to emulate, and that shows in Cloud Tapes newest release.

Earth Spun Occupants – “Freezing and Melting”

Another Kansas City outfit worthy of recognition is the multi-instrumentalist recording duo of Matt Wargin and Garrett Murdock, otherwise known as Earth Spun Occupants.

On April 20th, the duo will drop their sophomore album, Sober Thoughtfulness. Similar to bands like The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala, but then not quite, the swirling psychedelic keys and peddle-fed guitars, as well as layered dreamy vocals, on the new single, “Freezing and Melting,” metamorphosize together to create a semi-chaotic blend of space and psychedelic rock signals and sounds.

In fact, Wargin tells us that the duo experiment with sounds: “Our music is spun from the eclectic fibers of the music of Midwest to create new soundscapes using rock, folk, classical, hip-hop, and electronic.” The album was produced by Bret Liber of Red Roof Productions in Kansas City and the cover art was painted by a close friend who died a couple of years ago.

déCollage – “Magnetize”

The electrifying new video, “Magnetize,” from the Denver psych art pop project, déCollage, was written and recorded by 15 musicians attending the city’s Underground Music Showcase, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘SXSW of Denver.’

By the next day, the track was mixed and finalized. Recorded and mixed by noon the next day, the track was well distributed, and well received, which spurred the making of the video.

With its funky mechanical beats and grooves; sexy, sultry vocals; sax interludes; wavy synths bubbling beneath the surface, and colorful psychedelic overtones, “Magnetize” retains an original and hypnotic verve.

The single was recorded at Moon Magnet Studios and co-written by musicians such as Man Mantis, Sean Culliton (Rose Quartz/The Other Black), Turner Jackson, Derrick Bozich (Sound of Ceres/Candy Claws), and members of Ancient Elk.

The collective’s third full length album was released on Misra Records/Sub Pop and charted for five weeks, peaking at #16, on the CMJ Electronic charts, partly led by the popularity of “Magnetize.” The video was directed with Visual Phenomena by Remi Velezand and Fractals by Damon DuPont.

The collective has shared the stage with indie artists like Of Montreal, Animal Collective, Deerhoof and Dan Deacon.

The Secret Things – “Down By The Water”

Landing spins on CBC Radio in Canada for its cover of P.J. Harvey’s, “Down By The Water,” the Los Angeles indie rock band The Secret Things are avid fans of the band. Since starting a year ago, the band has played a number of shows and released the debut EP, Shock Diary.

The trio – featuring of vocalist Cynthia Catania and guitarist Steve Giles (formerly members of Saucy Monky) and band founder drummer Dan Nelles – are all accomplished musicians, having played for huge audiences of tens of thousands, touring and recording hit singles.

In fact, all of the members have toured in the U.S., Canada, and overseas, including sharing the stage with bands like Metric, Wilco, The Bangles, Pink and even PJ Harvey herself.

Basic tracks for the band’s EP were recorded at New Monkey Studio in Van Nuys, California, originally . Elliott Smith’s studio, who is a big influence for the band. Giles also released a solo album recently that is a favorite with SoCal deejays.

The band’s first gig in Temecula, California, took place on a festival stage shared with Jimmy Eat World and Neon Trees, among others. The band had one the slot via an iHeart Radio contest. The Secret Things are currently working on a new video for “Down By The Water.”

Glen Spardello – “Beauty Loves”

Having recently self-released his debut album, 5IVE 29NE (Five Two Nine) West Warwick, Rhode Island singer and songwriter, Glen Spardello, melds haunting, smoky vocals and lo-fi acoustic folk guitar notes to craft a spooky atmosphere around the lead track, “Beauty Loves,” the sparse and soulful, “Evil Dangerous” and the Dave Matthews-like “I Ain’t No Rolling Stone.”

Spardello wrote and recorded most of the songs over the past couple of years drawing from musical influences lik Love Bone, Eric Clapton, Queensryche, Layne Staley, and Brian Wilson.

Scotch Hollow – “Hocus Pocus”

In one of the historic bastions of intersecting musical styles, Kansas City, the genre-mixing band Scotch Hollow blends acoustic roots, down-home delta blues, and some country twang and rock on tracks like “Hocus Pocus” and “Nobody But You” from the sophomore album, Little Tortuga.

Songwriter and guitarist Mark Verbeck wrote and recorded almost the entire album on a farm in Kansas. Verbeck met fellow student and vocalist Carley Martin while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Not long after meeting, they brought together bassist JD Linn; drummer and percussionist Benjamin Scholz; harmonica Brody Buster and pianist Joel Schuman to form the complete band. The album also features three intriguing cover songs from Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and Blind Willie Johnson.

Over the past few years, Scotch Hollow has opened for bands like Left Lane Cruiser, Reverend Peyton and the Big Damn Band and count among its biggest influences Big Mama Thornton, Blind Will McTell, Chet Atkins, and Susan Tedeschi.

Lounge On Fire – “Huff”

With a hot new single, “Huff,” Boise multi-genre band Lounge On Fire is heating things up in Idaho’s biggest city with its unique sound that fuses rock with funk – or as the band calls it ‘sexyadelic’ and ‘freakfunk’ – mixing horns like trombone, sax and trumpet with traditional rock band instruments like guitars, bass, keys and drums. The band new album, Lips of Calypso, was dropped in January.

Formed in 2013, the band describes itself as “Northwest music scene; steel cut; blackened and peppered; rock-hopped, hip-dipped, cock-eyed funk-trunked, flat-on-your-back, pants-off-dance-off machine music.” The members are Nathan Norton (guitar/vocals); Josh Gilmore (bass); Wade Ronsse (drums); Alan Schwaderer (keys/guitar); Matt Patterson (sax); Seth Hoffman (trumpet) and Kevan Ash (trombone).

LOF has opened for bands like St Paul & The Broken Bones, The Suffers, Turquaz, Polyrhythmics and their musical influences include Modest Mouse, Gogol Bordello, Snarky Puppy, and Sharon Jones.

SHPR – “Tell Me”

The spatial sonic landscapes created by Los Angeles duo, SHPR, featuring Fabian Munguia and Alexander Ochoa, are mesmerizing.

SHPR weaves emotive, reverb-heavy vocals together with ambient, chill electronic effects, sharp, echoey beats, and plenty of space on tracks like the representative single, “Tell Me.”

OTTAWA – “Fever”

Covering the space between garage rock and indie pop, the Cleveland band OTTAWA first formed in 2014 after some high school friends, and other musicians via CL, started jamming together, cycling through the traditional trial and error that bands inevitably go through.

Now, some three years later, and a growing following in the region, the band has released the new track, “Fever,” with its tepid intro that builds into a soaring rocker (think Spoon meets The Killers) with ringing guitars and pop-influenced melodic riffs, vigorous drumming, and summertime-like choruses.

The band members include Dale DeLong (vocals); Will Hooper (guitar); Tim Czajka (guitar); Jeremy Barnes (bass) and Ed Planisek (drums). They’ve opened for artists like The Wombats and the Young Rising Sons, among others, and are majorly influenced by bands like The Killers, Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, and Velvet Underground. Mac DeMarco – “This Old Dog”

During the past few years, the name of Brooklyn-via-Canada singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco, keeps popping up as a musical influence for other artists and bands from around the world that we feature on IRC.

It’s no big surprise really. DeMarco is a wonderfully gifted artist; a musical and literary whiz, and a back-to-roots troubadour who has captured the ears and imagination of many indie music fans thanks to his truly outstanding and enjoyable albums featuring his amazing song craft and genre-bending compositions.

Mixing lo-fi sounds, out-of-tune acoustic guitars, rudimentary percussions, groovy, driving folk-rock like rhythms with Sonic Youth and Lou Reed influences on his new single, “This Old Dog” is the exciting title track from DeMarco’s fifth release due out in May. It goes without saying that there are many DeMarco fans idling waiting for the drop.

DeMarco’s breakthrough 2012 debut album,Rock And Roll Night Club, which also received a strong showing of support on Bandcamp, is a remarkable achievement. Since then, he has continued to build his prolific and explorative discography, and as a result, his following.

His 2014 release, Salad Days, spurred DeMarco to a meteoric rise. We can’t wait to hear what the rest of the new album sounds like.

Pre-order This Old Dog on DeMarco’s Bandcamp page. Drop date: May 5th

Kevin McWha Steele – “Front Page News”

Based in New York City, songwriter, poet and musician Kevin McWha Steele has won praise for his songwriting skills from iconic artists like Sting, Elvis Costello, Pink and Philip Glass.

Interestingly, Steele’s songs are floating around the web in both French and English using both his real name and a number of pseudonyms.

Steele is also known for his silky, crooner voice. But on other songs, like his swaggering alt. rock single, “Front Page News,” Steele is just as comfortable switching up his vocals and letting his rock and roll persona fly, recalling his musical heroes like John Lennon, David Bowie, Prince and Patti Smith.

The genres that Steele weaves so effortlessly include indie rock, indie pop, psych rock, alternative rock, acoustic/folk, and international (French) music. His new album, The Nightly Howl, is out now.

Ender & Valentine – “Howl”

Based in the hipster artist enclave of Brooklyn, musical duo Ender & Valentine, recently released debut album. The album is the culmination of two years of work from two musicians, Alex Crous (guitar, keys, programming, vocals) and Nadya Grace (vocals, bass).

The duo self-funded the album with the help of New Jersey production wizard Steve Wall (Mother Feather, Fancy Colors, Jeff Taylor), who added “electronic color and punch to Crous’ urgent and hooky bedroom pop compositions.”

The single, “Howl,” is sparkling, upbeat, and inspiring bedroom pop with layers of synth effects, uptempo beats and a retro-styled vocals from Crous and Grace, making for an irresistible dance track.

MP3: “Howl“Ender & Valentine from Síofra

The second track to be featured, “In The Hall,” is a shot back in time with plenty of seemingly Joy Division and Pet Shop Boys’ influences throughout, even though the duo doesn’t list either of them among their top musical influences. However, we can hear the influences of artists they do list as influences, including Beck, Radiohead, and Bright Eyes. Ender & Valentine have opened for artists like Tsao Band, The Junkie Twins, and Crystal Voyager.

Kinky – “Te Vas”

The Monterrey, Mexico five-member alt. rock band, Kinky, which initially made a splash in the United States nearly two decades ago with their second single release, “Mas,” have released a pair a new singles in the past year, including the newest Latin-dance and electro-driven “Te Vas,” and the more experimental and world music-leaning, “Desaparecer.”

Around the world Kinky is known for their creative and colorful electronic alt. rock style, thanks in large part, again, to the huge success of “Mas.” The band’s music is heavily influenced by Latin music, rock, dance, and techno.

Not long after, the incredibly popular song, which received heavy radio play, and for better or worse, was used in commercials for Nissan and NBC’s TV series, Kingpin, as well as video games SSX 3 and Crackdown, and in the movie Thirteen. Another of the band’s early singles, “Field Goal,” was featured in an episode of CSI and as the theatrical trailer for the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious.

In 2002, Kinky joined top indie bands like Cake, De La Soul, The Flaming Lips, Hackensaw Boys, and Modest Mouse on the Unlimited Sunshine Tour as well as appeared more than once at the famous music festival Coachella. The band members include Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Góngora, and Cesar Pliego.

Kenny George Band – “Picket Fences”

Hailing from Aiken, South Carolina, the members of the Kenny George Band will drop its debut album, Borrowed Trouble, on April 28th.

With influences that range from Willie Nelson to Wilco, TKGB are “a good old southern rock band” whose new single, “Picket Fences,” with its gentle acoustic strings, slide guitar and the warming vocals of George’s smooth vocals.

The other tracks on the album explore the common themes of relationships, longing and the trails of life, but with a specific reference from the point-of-view of a musician on the road. The songs are deep, driving, road-focus with melodic and yet gritty sounds resonating throughout. Some of George’s writing reminds us of Ray Davies’ (The Kinks) many songs about life on the road, particularly in the mid to late 1970s era.

The TKGB band members include founder Kenny George (lead guitar, vocals, songwriter); Bucky Brown (drums, harmony vocals); Center Ely (steel guitar); Brooks Andrews (bass) and Scott Rankin (rhythm guitar, harmony vocals).

The band has been touring across the south, and into states like Pennsylvania and Missouri, for the past few years, building a fan base and playing upwards of 180 shows per year. TKGB’s energetic live performances have made them increasingly popular throughout the south and heartland, and they were voted a ‘band to watch’ by the South Carolina Music Guide.

Samantha Fish – “Either Way I Lose”

From a relatively young age, musician Samantha Fish has made inroads into the international blues festival circuit, sharing the stage with artists like Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, The Royal Southern Brotherhood and Luther Dickenson, thanks to her skilled guitar playing and unforgettable voice.

On March 17, Fish dropped her fourth CD, Chills & Fever, showcasing R&B gems from the 1960s and 1970s, and featuring unforgettable melodies from the pens of legends like Allen Toussaint, Jackie DeShannon, Jerry Ragavoy and Bert Berns, among others.

“I listened to a lot of soul music, and I dug deep into people like Otis Redding and Ray Charles,” Fish recalls. “I was also influenced by people like North Mississippi’s R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. It’s a less restrained style of music than the sound people may be used to hearing from me, it’s definitely a different facet of my personality.”

Notable tracks include “Either Way I Lose” and “Crow Jane,” the latter of which is a rocking remake of the Skip James’ version dating back to the early 1900s. While the true origin of the song is unclear, Fish gives it a modern cadence. The Huffington Post wrote: “Fish is leaving her fingerprints behind as evidence of her hellacious handiwork. Just imagine what the woman with the golden touch will do next.”

Chase Emery Davis – “Little Locked Up”

Born in New York, raised in Paris, and living in London 21-year-old Chase Emery Davis is a British/American songwriter, vocalist and composer whose new album, Waiting For Her, offers the heartbreaking, genre-bending single, “Little Locked Up.”

Chase blends indie rock, pop and soul genres into lush, emotive songs about love and hope, highlighting his accomplished, haunting and powerful baritone vocals. It’s no surprise that he has had professional vocal lessons growing up in Paris. Davis is a fan of artists like White Lies and Keane.

As Hughie Dixon of The Uxbridge Gazette wrote: “His semi-baritone operatic depths could deceive you into thinking you are hearing a seasoned veteran vocalist…but this rare talent is barely pushing 21.”

Artist to Watch – Way Zen

Located in the university town of Ann Arbor, Michigan, psych rock multi-instrumentalist Tim Knowlton, aka, Way Zen, weaves wailing lo-fi guitars, swishing, hip-hop influenced rhythms and percussion, various samples and his well-honed vocal style on the intoxicating title track of his new album, Relics of the Heart.

“The album puts the contours of the human heart in sharp relief,” Knowlton says, “illuminating the heartbreaks and ego of a love-obsessed individual.”

The second standout track is the poignant, “I’ve Got Reasons to Never Stay The Same.” Knowlton is one of the rare ‘one-man band’ musicians that stands out from the never-ending flow of one-man bands these days. This track is just more evidence of that, as is the album itself.

But Knowlton is not the ordinary bedroom musician; he is a Berklee College of Music graduate, engineer, and trained musician since he was in his teens.

And while it’s true that most DIY musicians, or one-man bands, or ‘bedroom musicians,’ whichever phrase works in whatever context, do not have the luxury of having gone to perhaps the best music college in the U.S., it’s ultimately what grads do with that education that matters. On Relics of the Heart, Knowlton has proven that he was not wasting his time at Berklee, both as a musician and an engineer in training.

His musical influences are many and include Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Ruban Nielson (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and Elliott Smith, “particularly how they wrote for and played every instrument on their records,” he adds. Some of his favorite bands include Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Wilco, and The Velvet Underground.

Knowlton has recently decided to take a hiatus from recording in order to build sustainable strawbale homes in Utah as part of an effort to help folks there adapt to climate change. After this volunteer project out west, Knowlton says he will begin recording his second album.

Beta Play – “The Way We Play”

Beta Play is the talented, relatively new indie pop trio from Santa Barbara who are probably most known in the coastal college town for their quirky and earnest dance grooves and anthemic love pop songs. The band was founded in 2014 by guitarist and vocalist Tom Cantillon, his brother, Mike Cantillon, on keys and Mike Dyer on bass.

Their new dance-driven single, “The Way We Play,” with its unmistakable 80’s integrated influences, is the follow-up to their 2015 crowd-funded self-titled debut EP mixed by Eric Palmquist (Thrice, MUTEMATH, Bad Suns). Beta Play have performed opening spots for touring bands like Toad The Wet Sprocket and Plain White T’s.

Another standout track,”Do You Love Me,” was produced by Matt Wallace, who has previously worked on albums from The Replacements, Maroon 5 and Faith No More. The band has also performed at LA’s famous Troubadour and are currently working on the next release. The trio is heavily influenced by The Talking Heads, The Killers, and Foster the People. The band enjoyed robust radio play and online plays for their single from last summer, “Heaven Is Under The Sun.”

Sandmoon – “Time Has Yet To Come”

Beirut has flourished for hundreds of years as an essential international crossroads between East and West, with a wonderful tradition of diverse art, food, education, history, and most definitely, music.

One young girl was particularly influenced by her cultured surroundings growing up in the vibrant cosmopolitan capital city.

Beirut born and raised, pianist and vocalist Sandra Arslanian’s fluid piano-playing and emotive vocal style are unforgettable.

Arslanian’s particular musical influences range from traditional, and modern, music of Lebanese and Middle Eastern musicians, as well as indie and rock artists, such as Cat Power, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Bob Dylan, Portishead, Bob Dylan and Granddaddy.

Her band, Sandmoon, include talented musicians like Maen Rajab (guitars); Ribal Kallab (cello); Khaled Omran (bass); Maya Aghniadis (drums) and Raffia Elmadjian (trumpet).

Sandmoon’s new melancholy track, “Time Has Yet To Come,” features ringing guitars and mysterious synths, 70’s funk-inspired percussions, and Arslanian’s hypnotic, sad, almost grieving, vocals to make it one of the best overseas DIY singles we’ve heard so far this year.

Via Soundcloud: “Time Has Yet to Come”Sandmoon from #InTheEnd EP

After performing in the local city circuit and festivals around the region, Arslanian and Rajab set on a mini European tour – stopping in Stockholm, Brussels, and Paris – as an acoustic duo last summer.

In an article about Arslanian, the publication Your Middle East, wrote “She knows how to tell a story well. Sandra puts them into words, music, and she visualizes them. As a concept artist, she narrates her stories and illustrates the feelings that they evoke at the same time.”

We echo those sentiments. Today, the band is exploring new avenues – from the orchestration of new songs to the recording of intricate soundtracks. The five-track EP, #InTheEnd, is a uniquely eclectic EP, featuring a blend of indie pop, rock, folk, country, and blues. The EP was entirely written on ukulele and vocals.

sleepingtongues

The Sleeping Tongues – “Lyra”

Starting with an initial catalog of songs written by bassist Craig Kepen during a period of homeless car living, Brooklyn indie rock band The Sleeping Tongues have been performing around the NYC area since their formation in late 2014. The band thrives on live performance and authentic songs that mix modern influences with classic rock feel and instrumentation. The band members are totally DIY – producing, recording and mixing all of their own material.

The Sleeping Tongues’ new single, “Lyra,” from their self titled debut, has 80’s rock/soul feel with its drum machine beats and Prince-like sexiness helped along by intricate keyboard work from Evan Ignatz; hard-hitting, perfectly timed drums and cymbals from Alex Chung; exotic guitar work from Chris Fatcat and Kepen’s soulful, R&B-influenced vocals.

Via Soundcloud: “Lyra” – The Sleeping Tongues from The Sleeping Tongues

The band has opened for artists like Yabadum, Aotearoa, Shapes On Tape, Lofi Lincoln, Shayfer James, No Sky God, and are heavily influenced by The Cure, The Clash, New Order, Bob Marley, and Queens of the Stone Age.

Elizabeth Geyer – “The Wall”

Australian songwriter, vocalist and jazz trumpet extradonaire Elizabeth Geyer, who has performed at top festivals like the Monterey Jazz and Newport Jazz festivals, waited seven years before writing and recording her newest album, The Bridge. She was ‘waiting’ for a moment of inspiration to come.

“That moment finally came late one night,” she said, referring to an evening in late 2014, “after a few seconds into my first listen of an album that had arrived from America, Paul Adams’ The Land Where I Come From …I was hooked straight away by its unique beauty and wondered about talking Paul into joining creative forces.”

Before long, she was on a plane to meet musician and producer, Paul Adams, whose music she loved so well. The result is a 13 song album of intoxicating, gorgeous and introspective music.

The lead single, and title track, “The Bridge,” exemplifies Geyer’s heartfelt, gorgeous vocals, her emotional expressions with each line delivered, and touching, thoughtful lyrics, not to mention her undeniable talents as a pianist, guitarist and flugelhorn player.

Geyer’s accomplishments are many. She was a featured singer for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards ceremony; the Legends of Jazz at Jazz in the Domain; and performed in backing bands for artists like James Morrison during the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, and artists Marcia Hines, Harry Secombe, and Gene Pitney.

She travelled on the road as a trumpeter and jazz singer for years, and she was looking for a change. Then, sometime at the turn of this century, that change came out of the blue.

“I suddenly realized I couldn’t do it anymore,” she said. “As grateful as I was, I had to find my own voice.”

That’s exactly what she did – setting out on her own to record and release her debut album of jazz standards in 2000 after a decade of working as a freelance trumpeter and jazz singer.

Now, years later, Geyer is set to release her fourth album, The Bridge, featuring the lead single, “The Wall.”

“My dream was always to make music that might touch others like it touched me,” she said recently. “The Bridge has been a long journey, a whole series of leaps of faith…my hope is that these songs capture that.”

Pearla – “Waking Up”

New York City artist Pearla, the moniker of singer/songwriter Nicole Rodriguez, dropped her debut single last week, “Waking Up,” the first of a number of songs she is working on for her debut EP to be released later this year.

The track, as with all of the songs she writes, is a reflection, perhaps even a therapeutic journey, of her own life struggles – something that many listeners can all relate to.

“This song is essentially about coming out of a dark place in life,” she said. “It’s about suddenly seeing all of this beauty that you had been blind to for so long – ‘waking up.’

The producer of the track, and the upcoming EP, Devon C. Johnson had originally sent an acoustic guitar track from an old folk album that he hadn’t time to finish to Rodriguez, who wrote the lyrics almost immediately.

“I wrote the lyrics in a stream of consciousness over the track in less than a half hour,” she says. ” We did not edit much because it captured the feeling so perfectly and came about so naturally.”

Rodriguez’s moniker was adopted from, and is an homage to, her late grandfather, singer Jeff Pearl, who headed the doo-wop group The Neons. Rodriguez’s interest in music began to accelerate after her grandfather’s death, and she soon picked up a guitar and started listening to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Her other musical influences range from Fiona Apple to Alanis Morissette, and Conor Oberst to Laura Marling.

Via Soundcloud: “Waking Up”Pearla from forthcoming EP

“I would take the bus to NYC almost every day from when I was 16 to collaborate with different writers and producers. It has eventually led me to this project which is the culmination of all of that.”

Pearla has performed at The Count Basie Theater and The Stone Pony in New Jersey and The Bitter End in New York.

Austin’s THE KHOST Premiere ‘Nuremberg’ Video Ahead of SXSW and Album Release

Austin’s rising post rock DIY band THE KHOST premiere their brand new video, Nuremberg, exclusively on IRC. The video premiere comes just hours before the band performs at one of the first showcases to kick off South By Southwest 2016.

The Pull String Event Showcase, at the landmark Mohawk venue, also features indie artists like Human Circuit, Young Tongue, Twin Scars and Wildcat Apollo. THE KHOST will go on stage at 11:30pm.

Guitarist and vocalist Robert Avila directed and edited the video for the song “Nuremberg,” from the band’s new album, Stella Maris, set to drop on March 24th with a release party at Cheer Up Charlies in Austin.

Avila said the song is loosely based off of the mysterious 1561 ‘UFO aerial battle’ over Nuremberg, Germany, depicted in a broadsheet (early newspapers) account accompanied by a Hans Glaser woodcut mixed with a fictional story of two modern day humans who witness such an event and don’t know what to make of it.

The filming process for this unique and truly brilliant video (the first of such kind we’ve every seen) is compelling. “I filmed it using a couple of lights and a blanket to create silhouettes of each band member,” Avila says.

“Then I took multiple shots of food dye being dropped into a glass of water. We loved the way it looked and decided to make it into our new video.”

Brooklyn One-Man Band: Dangerous Cans

Dangerous Cans is the DIY musical project of Michigan native, Brooklyn transplant, Brian Time. He crafts electro-pop tracks featuring various layers of synth riffs, hypnotic sounds and programmed drum beats as the backdrop for his soft vocal delivery, even though he likes to refer to his music as “gristle and sizzle.”

Since the release of the sweet electro psych-pop singles “Feel Something” and “Pretty Trash,” which we think more people should hear, Dangerous Cans has released two other excellent singles that you can listen to on Bandcamp.

https://soundcloud.com/dangerous-cans/feel-something

We’re hoping for a proper Dangerous Cans’ EP or LP sometime in the near future. Time’s musical influences include Tears For Fears, Com Truise, Roxy Music, Keith Jarrett, Bobby McFerrin, and Boy Meets Girl. In the blogs that have previously written about Dangerous Cans, Time’s music has often been compared to Washed Out.

As with all one man bands, especially being so new, there is a bit of leeway given when you consider that the artist wrote all of the music, recorded all of the instruments, tracked in the vocals, mixed everything together, mastered it and then released it DIY style. That in itself is impressive.

https://soundcloud.com/dangerous-cans/pretty-trash

Sometimes the results are horrific and not worthy of consideration, while other times the results are fair, and from time-to-time, the end product is good enough that we feel more indie music fans, especially those who appreciate one-man bands, should hear it and make up their own mind.

If you’re interested in hearing more, check out the One-Man Bands archives and the Artist of the Week category – you’re bound to find some terrific music that you may not have heard when first published. Most of the past installments’ MP3 song links still work so that you can stream and download them as you can do with all posts on IRC.

5 Indie Bands to Watch, Vol. III – Ballerina Black, Cursed Arrows, Skylight Avenue, Virginia Leaves, One High Five

ballerinablack
Los Angeles 'gloom-pop/mope-rock' band to watch, Ballerina Black
The first two editions of ‘5 DIY Indie Bands to Watch’ featured a number of talented, under-the-radar bands that most people had never heard of before, but based on the response to those posts, they’re sure glad they had, just as we were when we first reviewed the bands in this, the third edition.

[zbplayer]

In Volume II of 5 DIY Bands, readers were introduced to the latest singles from unsigned bands like Umbrella Cult, Roadkill Ghost Choir, No Shoes, Hints, and The Hoot Hoots. In the debut post of the 5 DIY Bands to Watch series, which has received, to date, over 35,000 views, 225 Likes on Facebook, and 35 Tweets, we profiled DIY bands like Hemmingbirds, Jumpiter, Cloud Lantern, The Jesus Rehab and Appalachians.

In Volume III, we are excited to present bands that we’ve received submissions from in recent weeks that we think people should hear. This series, and related posts, such as Recent Indie Bands; 7 Indie Bands You’ve Gotta Hear; In Dee Mail, Artist of the Week, among others, highlights indie rock bands that stand out among hundreds of submissions we’ve reviewed. Four of the artists featured below originally dropped their latest albums in February, while one band is set to release a new album in late April.

Ballerina Black – Los Angeles, California

It’s always amazing to us the numbers of talented bands and artists that we would have probably never heard if they hadn’t sent their music in for review. Those of you who’ve been reading (and listening) to IRC posts for any length of time know that we regularly post DIY bands that are largely unknown, under-the-radar bands. Add to that gigantic, and ever-growing list the Los Angeles DIY ‘gloom pop/mope rock’ band Ballerina Black, formed in 2009. While the band is not as obscure as other bands we feature all of the time (afterall, they’ve opened for Interpol and Silversun Pickups), they surely are not as widely known as their talents dictate they should be. Let’s change that.

The band has a couple of unique ways to describe their sound, consisting of three sub-genres we’d never heard of before – driving mope-rock, gloom pop and grave-wave. Well, that got our attention. In 2007, singer-songwriter Moynahan teamed up with bassist Sugich (we could not find full names for the band, interestingly enough) and immediately, we’re told “a telepathy was forged.” In 2010, after considerable work writing, recording and mixing songs, the duo completed and self-released their debut LP, Cattle Arithmetic, which caught on quickly in LA, which is in and of itself impressive for a city over-flowing with talented musicians and bands. In fact, the duo’s debut was so well-received by the local scene that they were booked to open for Silversun Pickups and Interpol at the famed Greek Theater.

Not long after, the duo sought a fuller sound and recruited two more members, a drummer (Anthos) and an additional guitarist/keyboardist (Eton). In 2012, the new band released a series of EPs titled Injureless Blå. One writer familiar with the band inked the following description: “Maybe if Nirvana had decided to do covers of The Cure might come close to hitting some planet of reference in the [Ballerina] Black universe surrounding these guys sound. What is apparent [is] the refreshingly austere catchy-ness of Ballerina Black’s message. But the biggest mystery still remains.” The first track was recently highlighted on the BBC.

Cursed Arrows - Sonic Union

Cursed Arrows – Brantford, Ontario

Cursed Arrows is the unisex rock duo Ryan and Jack E. Stanley from Brantford, Ontario that we were blown away by the first time we heard their bluesy rock guitar and drum romp, “Little Girl Blue,” that sounds like Jack White and PJ Harvey’s long-lost offspring. The track was IRC’s Song of the Day for March 11th.

Proclaiming that they “ain’t goin’ nowhere but up” and “won’t stop until we’re dead,” the duo are set to release their new album, Sonic Union, on April 30th via Ford Plant Recording Company. Not surprisingly, their musical influences include Patti Smith, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Jack White, to name a few.

“We have seen so many people and bands and buildings and pieces of land come and go, but we will never go away,” Jack E. Stanley told IRC. “As tempting as it is to disappear at times, that is simply impossible. If we knew we weren’t supposed to be making music for the rest of our lives, we would have quit a decade ago. If we could stop making music, we would [because] it’s tiring as hell.”

skylightavenue

Skylight Avenue – Eugene, Oregon

Skylight Avenue is a good name for the Eugene, Oregon DIY band headed by Jordan Poet. Formed only last year, the band produces well-written, wonderfully composed, expertly recorded and finely mixed songs that have a ‘skylight’ sense about them, which is evident when listening to the four songs on the band’s debut EP, The View From Here, that was self-released on February 18th.

On the song “Home,” the first minute in is a celestial sonic experience, and then again towards the end of the song, with the full involvement of the band, Poet’s impressive vocals, masterful, overlapping choruses, jubilant drumming, a grooving bass, and shimmering, soaring guitar playing signal that Skylight Avenue has the potential to go far beyond being a mostly under-the-radar band, and are definitely on our list of the Best New DIY Bands of 2013. As the second single, “This City Never Sleeps” demonstrates, the band’s sound is similar to artists like The Classic Crime, Go Radio, Thrice, Mayday Parade, Emery, and Relient K. We’d love to hear what you think via the Comments box below, on Facebook or Twitter.

Virginia+Leaves+portrait

Virginia Leaves – Vancouver, Canada

Mike Ness (Social Distortion) and Lucero fans are the most likely music lovers to dig the sounds of Vancouver band Virginia Leaves on their debut LP, Portrait. The band initially was an acoustic venture put together by long time friends, Mike West on guitar and vocals, and Mike “Strides” Brown on guitar. Later, Glenn Kelly on bass and Brian Michals on drums, joined to complete the formation of Virginia Leaves.

The band’s sound is a raunchy mix of DIY rock, country and punk. Producer Pierre Fraser of Resonant Mind Productions describes it as “elements of rock, with a thick mist of country blowing its way up from the south” with saccharine harmonies and catchy sing-alongs. The singles, “No Where’s Worse” and “Growing Older” are the kind of songs that make you want to crank it up, especially if you’re a fan of Mike Ness style music. The band’s top musical influences include Nirvana, Beatles, Deer Tick, and Sparta.

One High Five – Long Beach, California

After airplay on Los Angeles radio station KROQ‘s (106.7), Long Beach, California DIY band One High Five were invited to perform their first show at the famous Viper Room. For any band, especially a rather new DIY band (formed in 2011), to perform their first show at a legendary venue like The Viper Room is a big, big deal. A representative from High Voltage Magazine was at the show and Tweeted: “There’s a party on the stage, and it’s called ‘One High Five!'”

Singer and songwriter David Sauer‘s writes about life experiences – love, loss, hope and despair, and combines them with layered guitars, well-honed orchestration and appealing harmonies are at the core of its spell-bounding sound. While One High Five is in theory a one-man band, Sauer demos are recorded at his studio with collaboration from other musicians, “a rotating crew of friends and strangers” that also join Sauer on stage in performances around southern California, across the states and even China, of all places. Sauer’s songs draw off of some of his favorite bands like Green Day, The Beach Boys and CAKE. The track, “Tear Down The Wall,” on the debut release, Here, Hear!, reminds may remind some listeners ofus a bit of Jack White – the White style of vocals and guitar/drumming are there.

Recent Releases We Almost Missed, Vol. XVIII – TV On The Radio, Little Scream, Vessels, The French Horn Rebellion, Honey Pies

The lead up to Coachella (see the Coachella Mix) and Record Store Day (extensive RSD mixes with rare songs), meant that we didn’t get to all of the Best New Releases for the week of April 12th. In addition to the regularly scheduled releases that week, there were the hundreds of limited edition vinyl releases as well coming out for Record Store Day. For the serious music enthusiast – especially the indie and alternative rock vinyl collector – it was a huge week, not to mention it was also the week of Coachella.

So, as a result of everything that was going on, we missed out on a few big releases that week, most notably, TV On The Radio, plus recommended releases by lesser known bands that we like, including Little Scream, Moonlight Towers, Old Calf. While we covered most of the releases for that week – including Panda Bear, Foo Fighters and Crystal Stilts – this edition of Recent Releases We Almost Missed starts out basically with volume two of the Best New Releases for the week of April 12th.

If The New York Times calls your band “the next big thing” (in ‘electro’) that’s a pretty darn good place to start. And since that high-tail nod, and many other accolades that have piled up or the past year or so, The French Horn Rebellion have been on a roll. Well, they released their debut album, The Infinite Music of the French Horn Rebellion, a few weeks ago with a stream premiere on MySpace.

On the back of just three EP’s to date, these two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums, Cut Copy and Sebastian and have been tipped by everyone from Q Magazine, The Guardian, Time Out and French music bible Les Inrockuptibles to hometown publications such as The New York Times and NY Daily News.

The Brooklyn-based duo already had an illustrious pedigree; David produced MGMT‘s indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records, and with previous single “Up All Night” they scored a Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1 and an opening slot on the influential Kitsuné Maison compilation series. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD, Young Empires and Alex Winston, the later resulting in JPlatt of New York producers du jour The Knocks madly tweeting “its like the hottest thing I’ve ever heard”!

The album’s lead track, “The Moment” is interesting, but we wouldn’t necessarily call it indie rock. Still, it’s great stuff, and the album itself is quite a spectacle of rock mixed with classical influences. Pitchfork called it “irresistible, panting synth-pop, with fat new wave key tones and ecstatic vocals.” Yes.

The French Horn Rebellion from The Infinite Music of the French Horn Rebellion

Another release we almost missed during that busy second week of April was Little Scream‘s awesome album, The Golden Record.

Little Scream are pretty much a new band from Montreal that we think are set to break out this year or next; right now, they seem to be less known than we expected, considering that their MySpace page – which has only been open for about a year – has only about 47,000 profile views. That’s not bad in one year, but it’s less than we expected. With so many awesome bands coming out of Montreal over the years, it’s harder, no doubt for good bands from Montreal to stick out. Plus, check out Moonlight Towers, Bass Drum of Death, and Bell X 1.

But it doesn’t end there, with the most most recent releases we almost missed. There are others from over the past few months that we have been saving, and are compelled to share with our readers because we like them a lot. Check out these singles from great rarely heard 2011 tracks, featuring bands like

This is like a big ‘let’s play catch up’ post. We’re not going to say better late then never, but it’s along those lines; the end point being it doesn’t really matter when the music came out in 2011 – these are simply songs from recent releases that shouldn’t be forgotten. In order to get through it all, we don’t have the time to review or provide additional information about all of the releases. Sorry guys, but we have so much other newer, and coming up, music to cover. All we can say is that if you really dig a particular band, we’re sure you’ll Google them anyways.

Although we pretty much don’t post remixes anymore – there’s too many of them; and too much original music to listen to – we found this RAC mix of “Love Whiplash” from Jayme Dee too irresistible to pass up. Plus, Mothers of Gut delivers with “Wizard Tree,” Vessels arrive with “Recur,” Airborne Toxic Event do it “All At Once,” (are they trying to sound like Kings of Leon? that would be SO tacky), and The Sundelles play the perfect metaphor with “Kiss The Coast.”

Noteworthy Tracks from Peter Elka, The Honey Pies, Broken Gold, John Vanderslice, Two Tears

Next up, you’d swear the track “Cool Thing To Do” by R&B musician Peter Elka was one of the many wonderful Motown hits of the 50s and 60s. Instead, Elka, is a young man who obviously has great appreciation and reverence for that sound and era of music, and it’s hard not to if you’ve ever spent a few hours listening to any one of many Motown Greatest Hits compilations. Elka embraced this uniquely American music form and made it his own on this lead track from his February album release, Repeat Offender. Plus, great singles from Recent Releases We Almost Missed by The Honey Pies, Broken Gold, and John Vanderslice.

Kerry Davis, formerly of Red Aunts, is now making music under the moniker of Two Tears. In February, Kerry release three garage rock track that were written and recorded in three locales – Paris, Dubai and New York City. Here are two of the three tracks that really got our attention. Two Tears is a new-to-us band that is now at the very least a blip on our very crowded music radar screen.

And while the album is still on our ‘listen to list’ along with many other 2011 albums, the lead single, “North Star” is a good indication of what we hope the rest of the LP sounds like. The Owsley Brothers Bring Gothic Country-Folk to Song

The Florida band The Owsley Brothers will probably be new to most people, but we wanted to share two tracks from their new album, Separated At Birth, set to drop next month. We really like the band’s organic, gothic folk/country sound evident in the song “Under The Shade of A Live Oak Tree.” Despite the apparent, implied optimism in the song’s title, “Faith In Me” paints a gloomy and sinister mood. These two fine tracks are from The Owsley Brothers’ forthcoming album, Separated At Birth, which apparently drops sometime in April.

Summer Indie Songs Playlist, Vol. VI: Jane’s Addiction, Modest Mouse, Beck, M83, SFAs

We have more summer indie songs in a playlist to share.

[Originally published in 2010] The long days of what has been a brutally hot and humid summer for many areas of the United States, Europe and Russia are beginning to wane as August tips towards September.

Millions of kids are getting ready to go back to school; people are returning from vacations, and millions more are hoping that the autumn brings more than just cooler temperatures.

For much of the west coast, especially here in northern California, it has been an unusually cool summer compared to past years – and we’re not complaining.

The only exception, of course, is the typically foggy areas like San Francisco, and other points along the northern coast, where summer is commonly foggy, chilly and windy, and yet, less than 20 miles in any easterly direction, it’s blazing hot and tinderbox dry. It does not rain in most of California from May through November.

Because the indie summer songs this year is such a huge hit, with more than 140,000 visitors from around the world since early June, we’ve put together another few mixes – including today’s – featuring approximately 130 more summer-themed songs.

NOTE: Click this tiny flash player and it will stream all of the songs on this page uninterrupted. No fking commercials! Updated June 2019
