2018 Band to Watch – Austin Indie Rockers Arrows to Fire

Sailing on the exhilarating wave and fan love of being a 2018 SXSW Official Selection, Austin DIY band Arrows to Fire are rising in the alt./indie rock scene.

In fact, last summer their cover of Golden Earring’s “Radar Love,” was selected for rotation on Amazon’s Open Road playlist, which of course opened the band up to a huge new audience.

It’s not a usual thing for a band to saddle up that quickly into the indie DIY spotlight. Thousands of bands – many that are good, some that are great (and yet undiscovered – we feature them all the time) – have been vying for years to get even just a little slice of that light. Life is fucking unfair.

But here’s a band that deserves it. Their latest album, Here We Go, is an alt. rock lover’s collection of solid, heartfelt, blazing tracks. In addition to the title track, there are songs on this album that are made for alternative rock radio and college radio.

One of the standout tracks that we feel in particular is already queued up for a hit song, the emotional, slow-burning 90s meets 2010s and gotta-play-that-again rocker, “Long Way Down.”

Besides have a killer new album, these guys are doing something even bigger in that they have made a splash in less than two years, and in the insanely competitive town of Austin.

And yet when you listen to songs like “Long Way Down,” among others, it’s evident that Arrows To Fire have thrown down their own sound which is driven by the sheer power and magnificence of their melodies and the energy and brilliance of the performances from the guitarist Chris Lavigne, Steve Bernal, drummer Brian Mendes and the impressive vocal abilities of John Joyo.

No wonder these guys are on the rise. Solid fucking band. Dope album. See them live if you get the chance.

The band formed in 2016 when Austinite singer-songwriter John Joyo and French-American composer Chris Lavigne, who share a passion for bands like Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Pearl Jam, started writing songs together. Before long, they had a band and a couple handfuls of good songs.

The album was recorded at the legendary Arlyn Studios (The Strokes, Coldplay, Lucinda Williams) in Austin and co-produced by Jacob Sciba (Gary Clark, Willie Nelson) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (The Ramones, Sonic Youth, Metallica, Beastie Boys), and it shows.

The band has been performing and selling out shows at legendary venues and festivals such as Antone’s and Austin City Limits. The band has also had over half of a million views on YouTube.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. IX – Twin Peaks, Royal Forest, Thundercat, Drift Wood Miracle, Sensual Harassment

img-twin-peaksWe’ve heard some say that there were not as many breakout indie artists and bands in 2013 compared to previous years. That’s simply not true. And that’s because, as many of you know, we cover bands that most of the ‘copy-cat’ indie blogs (those that recycle the same bands and songs featured on other blogs) don’t.

We certainly don’t follow, or cover, the trendy artists and bands simply because it’s considered hip. Nevertheless, the five breakout bands of 2013 featured in this special feature varied from getting some coverage on popular music blogs and websites, while others (like Thundercat, Drift Wood Miracle, and Sensual Harassment), for the most part, were largely overlooked and under the radar considering their talent. In fact, each of them struck a chord with many people when we originally featured them last year. Of course, by being breakout bands, they are also bands to watch in 2014The scores of unsigned, obscure artists and bands featured on IRC in the past year, along with the more popular blogger buzz bands, include Twin Peaks, Royal Forest, Thundercat, Drift Wood Miracle, and Sensual Harassment

Twin Peaks – Chicago

Lovers of scuzzy, energetic lo-fi garage pop take notice. The young (all five members are 19 years old) Chicago band Twin Peaks‘ popularity has been growing throughout 2013 thanks in large part to the release of their fine debut LP, and a steady string of shows and tours beyond the borders of the Windy City and outwards across the nation.

Some of their songs, like the lead single, “Stand in the Sand,” from their 2013 debut album, Sunken, are fast-driving, lo-fi, surf pop meets glam-rock, raging with the vigor and energy one would expect from five 19-year-old guys in a rock band that is pumping out impressive tracks, and videos, and who show great promise into, and a growing fan base, in 2014.

“Stand in the Sand” is about as aggressive as you can get within the boundaries of indie garage pop; the song emotes an unmistakable glam-meets-surf-rock attitude. There are other moments on Sunken; in fact, quite a few people recently have jumped on the Twin Peaks bandwagon, including our friend Liz, who also admits to finding some of the guys in the band “hot.”

Altogether, Twin Peaks is getting attention – in Chicago, they are a buzz band and for all of the obvious reasons, are often compared to their neighbors, Smith Westerns, who themselves have been a fixture on the larger national indie scene for the past few years. If this is your kind of jam, and more and more people listen to and buy their music, go to their shows and urge their friends hooked if it’s your kind jam , which of course is nothing like the emotive capabilities of garage rock or punk when it comes to just out of high school guys adult men, that fits nicely with a celebrate summer playlist, you’re

As is the case with many bands that take a common name, there are also other bands with the same name, which, for a number of reasons, bands are discouraged to do, especially in the age of Google. Based on this page from Lastfm, there are at least four other “known” bands that go by the name Twin Peaks. The band performed at the Outside Lands Festival after show in San Francisco on August 10th at Brick & Mortar with The Men and King Tuff.

Royal Forest – Austin, Texas

Austin experimental DIY band Royal Forest have gained some notoriety in the city’s highly competitive music scene for their unusual experimentation that “manifests itself in field recordings.” Examples include, according to their Soundcloud page, recording “in a single-prop airplane above the Texas hill country, inside a WWII submarine in Galveston, and in a lightning storm among the Monahans’ sand dunes.” The band members of Royal Forest do not wish to be categorized as either a “studio band or live act,” but rather as a band that “pushes the limits of composition, using whim and on-the-fly audio manipulation as songwriting tools. Experimentation is their evolutionary engine,” which is clearly evident on their exciting album, Spillway, released by their own DIY label, King Electric Record Company.

Thundercat

Thundercat – Los Angeles, California

If you haven’t heard of the rising Los Angeles artist Thundercat yet, now is not a bad time to check him out. Last summer, Thundercat released the CD and LP versions of his sophomore album, Apocalypse. Thundercat’s label mate on Brain Feeder Records, the often praised artist Flying Lotus, wore the producer’s hat for the making of the album, and the results speak for themselves in the music. But if they actually did speak, they’d say: “This is awesome.”

It’s no wonder that Thundercat gained so much traction and captivated indie music fans with Apocalypse. “Oh Shiet It’s X” is the standout single from the album where Thundercat and Flying Lotus really shine and demonstrate with crystal clarity in sound just why they continue to work and perform live together. Not long ago they put out the solid R&B jam “Heartbreaks + Setbacks,” which was also a crowd-pleaser during their 11-city North American engagement last May, drawing audiences from Montreal to Minneapolis, Boston to Oakland.

driftwood--miracle

Drift Wood Miracle – Durham, North Carolina

If you dig the late 60’s classic guitar rock with its blues and psychedelic energy, then the band Drift Wood Miracle from Durham, North Carolina should be on your radar. We first learned of the band – as we do so many that are featured on IRC – after they submitted some songs for review. Right away we were dazzled by their excellent craftmanship and thrilling classic rock interpretations molded to the modern era, and because they’re DIY, without any pressure from anyone else. Drift Wood is brand new band, only formed in mid-2013 by Bryan Diver, the band’s songwriter, singer and pianist.

Drift Wood Miracle started when four highschool friends, two of which wrote songs, realized each others musical interests, humor, and over all love of life were in common. So, they got together one weekend in December with a producer and recorded thier first LP, The 21st, as they were working out the final kinks in the songs. Upon reflection of the album, they were able to look forward with anticipation for their high energy live shows. Now incorperating the grooves of funk, the heavy riffs of grunge, and the sponaneous music turns associated with only jazz musicians, Drift Wood Miracle is playing show after show with none alike. DWM is now in the studio working on their sophomoric LP with as many as 24 much loved songs to chose from.

sensualharassment

Sensual Harassment – Brooklyn, New York

Sensual Harassment is a two-piece, new wave/psych-pop/disco band from Williamsburg in the New York borough of Brooklyn, that formed in 2009. They started making waves back in 2011, but didn’t really break out until the past year, and especially with recent singles, and their new album, Escape From Alpha Draconis . They have been influenced by groups like New Order, The Cars, The Clash, Beach Boys, Steely Dan and Daft Punk and have opened for bands like Future Islands and Das Racist.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. VIII – Hospital, Get Inuit, Mary Goes Wild, The Unassisted and Rascal Experience

All year, we’ve been profiling talented DIY, small label or under-the-radar artists and bands in popular features and playlists like this newest installment of DIY Bands to Watch; 7 Bands You’ve Gotta Hear; In Dee Mail; Artist of the Week, among others.

The stacks of music submissions – the life blood of IRC’s original, often exclusive scoops on hot new bands (and why we are so different from any other blog) – from all across the United States, U.K. and Canada mostly, grow and grow each week. For months we have been sorting through them and processing as many as possible; it’s a tremendous amount of work – not saying that to gain any sympathy or anything like that, but just to demonstrate how seriously we take the process of reviewing submissions and breaking them into smaller and smaller groups of our favorites who we then write a profile for and publish to the site.

This special installment of new overseas DIY bands to watch that most of you have never heard before is the seventh in the series. These are five amazing bands that we think our readers are really going to enjoy (some songs are definitely grower tracks – trust us). The unsigned, non-U.S. bands are Hospital; Get Inuit; Mary Goes Wild; The Unassisted and Rascal Experience.

Just click the first song on the playlist and let it stream automatically while you read the band profiles and do other things. A ton of work goes into putting together this special features, so if you like what you hear, please let us know by Liking, Tweeting, Google +1’ing and spreading this around to as many people as you can.

Note: In an effort to publish faster posts focused on one band, song, video or other singular subject, we’re adding a blog in the tradition of the original type of blog, which will serve as a supplement to the main IRC website that you’re on right now.

hospital-russia

Hospital – Moscow, Russia

While IRC receives hundreds of submissions a month from all over the world, you’d think there would be more than about a dozen submissions a year from one of the biggest countries in the world, especially considering that it’s been almost 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall that brought sweeping changes that spurred a historic, relatively bloodless, revolution of freedom and democracy, and ushered in a near-complete dismantling of the once powerful communist empire, which unraveled and imploded after decades of squandering the country’s wealth in an epic arms race with the United States.

And yet, nearly a quarter of a century after the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, the Russian government under President Vladimir Putin has been gradually reverting to old Soviet-style restrictions on speech, which includes music, the Internet and other forms of entertainment, art and media.
That aside, there is a genuine curiosity and anticipation whenever we come across a submission from a band in Russia. Recently, a Moscow band named Hospital, not to be confused with the Houston techno house outfit of the same name, caught the attention of our ears, and those of cafe patrons, which was exciting because this ‘new’ band from the former USSR sounds great, and turns out to be one of IRC’s Breakout Bands of 2013.

The quartet’s energetic, 80’s-style rock mixed with threads of dream pop and hints of folk is strangely, yet wonderfully, caught between embracing the post punk revivalist trend of the time, and toying with new wave (that was later labeled ‘indie electro pop’).

It’s not hard to imagine (at least it wasn’t for our group) after you listen to the songs below, Hospital breaking out in a big way in the U.S. We won’t be surprised at all if there is a strong reaction to this profile of the band in the coming weeks, as often happens for under-the-radar artists and bands that are featured on IRC, but who’ve received surprisingly little coverage elsewhere online.

hospital-tailspin

The four members – Yegor Berdnikov (vocals, guitar); Aleksey Shorin (bass); Andrej Tsvetkov (guitar), and Vladimir Balovnev (drums) – formed Hospital in the autumn of 2011, but didn’t release their first 7″ single, a mini-classic by Russian indie rock standards, “Time Will Tell” (with the B-side, “Falling”), until December 2012.

A month later, in January of 2013, Hospital’s debut album, When The Trees Were Higher, was released, gaining exposure in Russia, Europe and the UK. When The Trees Were Higher has quickly become one of our favorite overseas debut LPs of 2013. It’s energetic, well-produced, provocative, unabashed, terrifically crafted, wonderfully catchy and thoroughly enjoyable, coming darn close to rivaling other top DIY debut albums of 2013 from talented overseas bands.

Plus, even though their debut single, “Time Will Tell,” was technically released in December of 2012, it was officially released as the lead single of their January debut LP, and therefore qualifies, in our book, as one of the best DIY songs of 2013. Nearly a year since their official debut release, it’s time for the band to get more exposure in the western hemisphere, especially with the release of Tailspin, Hospital’s debut EP dropped in August.

“Time Will Tell”Hospital from When The Trees Were Higher – Jan. 13th

The five-track Tailspin EP contains only one original new track, the title track, and it’s a stellar song by all measures. It combines elements of electro pop and rock, with sprinklings of funk and R&B, creating a retro edge that is surprisingly, and yes, ironically, modern. The band members all contribute their particular skills masterfully, which is one of the reasons they sound so tight and create such catchy, memorable, melodic, and energetic songs.

There is also a remix of “Tailspin” by Halcyon Drive, is truly fantastic. In the past few weeks, we’ve listened to When The Trees Were Higher‘s seven songs at least a half dozen times, probably more. And it has really grown on us, as well as a few others who we’ve turned on to the band’s music in recent weeks. Another track that people are loving is song “Secret Place,” which we’ve included as a second bonus track in addition to the two lead singles – “Tailspin” and “Time Will Tell.”

In fact, “Secret Place,” is yet another terrific example of Hospital’s talent and knack for writing incredibly catchy songs. Listen to more songs via Hospital’s Soundcloud page.

There’s no question that Hospital is one of the hottest new bands from Russia that we’ve heard in a long time – perhaps years. To add even more credibility to that declaration, consider that Hospital was chosen to open for Lana Del Ray when she performed a sold-out concert in Moscow last July, raising the band’s local profile one hundredfold and and generating a bit of a buzz for the band that started getting them play in the UK and Europe.

In their submission, the band listed their main musical influences as Doves, The Vines, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Coldplay, and The Cure. That’s a diverse and quality selection of artists and bands with the common thread among all of them being that they are uniquely talented artists who are clearly very gifted.

We want to hear what you have to say about the band; please leave Comments in the box below or via Twitter to @IndieRockCafe with the hashtag #hospitalband

getinuit

Get Inuit – Kent, England

Get Inuit is a newly emerging surf/grunge rock band from Kent, England who recently had a Record of the Week on the BBC radio program, BBC Introducing, for the single, “Cutie Pie, I’m Bloated.” The band specifically referred to their music as, verbatim, “surf/grunge/indie/retro/pop.” And it’s true (they forgot rock and elements of punk).

However, it would not work in a sentence. For example: “Next, Get Intuit is a surf grunge indie rock retro pop punk band from the United Kingdom.” Nonetheless, the results are what matter, and Get Inuit achieves what they set out to do with a mix of genres and 60s pop and rock aesthetics and songwriting with grunge guitar tones and sing-a-long choruses.

The band was literally formed in July and popped out these two tracks, including the B-side to “Cutie Pie, I’m Bloated,” a catchy rocker called “My Oh My.” On their Soundcloud page the band wrote: “We make dirty, surf inspired pop music and we come from Kent. None of us can actually surf.”

The band’s top musical influences are Weezer, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Yuck, and Bleeding Knees Club. Will this new UK band break out big? It’s always hard to say from the get-go, but they’re off to a pretty good start.

marygoeswild

Mary Goes Wild – Munich, Germany

Launched in 2012, Mary Goes Wild is a Munich based DIY garage rock, surf and blues duo formed by Danny Wild (guitar, vocals) and Freddy Jones (drums). MGW is one of the more promising overseas DIY rock bands we’ve heard in 2013. The duo’s meticulous performances are marked by an edgy swagger in the delivery of predominantly blues roots rock signature style and sound of riffs and beats squarely places them in the Bands That Rock series.

For die-hard fans of rock, Mary Goes Wild is a roots rock band that draws from garage rock, surf and definitely blues elements. Their sound consists of back-to-the-roots blues with garage rock and surf elements. Mary Goes Wild’s live performances are excessive and extremely noisy, an effect the band strives to achieve with each show by stacking multiple amplifiers to create a modern “wall-of-sound” effect.

From the first couple of notes on the track, “Redheaded Chain,” Mary Goes Wild belts out a wicked rock sound that communicates to the listener right away that they’re not messing around with any synths, drum machines or cookie cutter riffs; their music is organic, raw and untamed. On the track, “Do Anything,” the duo kick it out just right. The band’s top musical influences include The White Stripes, Ty Segall, The Blackbox Revelation, Bass Drum Of Death, Wavves, and The Black Keys.

unassisted

The Unassisted – Manchester, England

The Unassisted is an unsigned indie/alternative rock band from the U.K. that should be on the cusp of breaking out soon – that is, if the planets are aligned just right, and if DIY music lovers get their friends to listen to the tracks below. The more we listen the the tracks featured here, and the band’s other songs via Soundcloud, the more they grow on us.

Last January, the four-piece scrappy young band from Manchester dropped their debut album, The Yellow Guitar Chronicles, that included the single, “Hands Dance Hands,” a gem of a track that is pure grim rock with an terrific drum beat, gloom mixed with angst style vocal delivery, strange lyrics and a creative pairing of keyboard and guitar that gives the song a sense of creepy urgency – like something really ugly is about to go down at any second.

It’s the kind of tense, but cool, track you could imagine in a Quetin Tarintino movie or in a Breaking Bad episode. “Hands Dance Hands” helped gain the band some important airplay and blogger buzz in the UK, and put their name on the board as a new band to watch in the Manchester underground scene, most especially among fans of gloom rock.

It helps that the band has other tracks worth mentioning, including the raw, lo-fi Joy Division-like track, “Get On The Floor,” with its riveting guitar jams, menacing back beat and rhythm, and edgy, dark vocals. The track is another standout single that lends more credence to a band that is poised to that is a fan favorite at live shows, which is completely understandable.

The band’s top influences are Queens of the Stone Age, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Beck, which is not hard to imagine after listening to the two tracks here from their recent debut. Also don’t miss the riveting mix of “Hands Dance Hands” by Future Plans. The Unassisted is planning a new release early in 2014 and we’ll certainly be interested to hear it.

rascalexperience

Rascal Experience – Florianopolis, Brazil

The best part about Rascal Experience‘s music is Hedy Gabriel‘s excellent melodic guitar riffs, the lo-fi rawness of the songs in a way that only a DIY band could produce. There is something charmingly authentic and reassuring about band’s that are putting their heart into their music for the sake of making music and not to be popular or to overly polish their songs. In their nakedness, these are good songs; with a great producer they could be fantastic songs.

In September, the DIY band dropped their debut EP, Bad Luck Experience. Gabriel is an interesting and clearly talented indie and alternative rock songwriter, vocalist and musician from Florianopolis, Brazil, and a fan of Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, the latter of which is easily believable listening to the band’s songs, especially stand-out tracks like “Demon of the Crop.”

One of the things we like about Gabriel’s songs is his mostly flat, yet emotive, vocals, and the fact that we can hear each and every word, which you have to give props to for someone we assume is not a native English speaker. The more we listen to the band, the more we like them. Surely they can be even better with some work and a great producer.

There are songs that fall flat, like “Begger Inside,” but if it was worked on, and if Gabriel could sing in a harder, more aggressive voice, would be such a better song. That’s the thing with DIY bands – their not quite as good as they can be, but the essential elements are there to produce some exceptional music as they mature as musicians and as a band.

Besides The Strokes, and at times, Arctic Monkeys, we also definitely hear influences of Sonic Youth, and would not be surprised if the band members were also fans of Lou Reed, with and without, The Velvet Underground, which songs like “Fake Interests” and “Different Views” make us think of. It’s always exciting to hear DIY artists who you can tell by their playing which bands they admired and listen to the most.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. VII – Dash, Cozy Danger, Timberhawk, Carry The Tradition and Flash Riot

dashtheband
We never get tired or bored with hearing impressive music from bands and artists that we’ve never heard of before – and hopefully the same is true for many of you. That’s pretty much one of the big things that sets Indie Rock Cafe apart from most other indie and alternative rock blogs.

[zbplayer]

We are reviewing hundreds of submissions every couple of months, and selecting the best artists and bands to include in any number of regular band profile and playlists, such as this series – 5 DIY Bands to Watch in 2013 – as well as 7 Bands You’ve Gotta Hear, Artist of the Week, Bands That Rock, In Dee Mail, Top 10 Songs playlists, among others.

This is the seventh installment of 5 DIY Bands to Watch in 2013 (and beyond). So far, the collection of 35 unsigned bands featured in this series has introduced tens of thousands of music lovers to great bands they never knew about previously. The process for selecting bands for this series – as opposed to bands and artists featured in other series listed above is enormously time-consuming. Hundreds of submissions are reviewed over time, and little by little, we listen to them over and over, in the end, selecting about 30% to 40% of all submissions. After that, each band and artist selected is put into a draft post for a specific playlist series. (Read more about how bands are picked for this series at the end of this post.)

A fitting band to kick of this latest installment of 5 DIY Bands to Watch is the exciting Raleigh, North Carolina indie synth pop rock quartet Dash. The seeds for Dash where planted a few years ago when singer, songwriter and musician David Garcia recorded a number of demos in his bedroom. Like so many one-man band bedroom artists of recent years, Garcia initially had no intention of releasing them until he was approached by friends, and future band mates, who encouraged him the songs needed to be recorded and performed live. It’s a good thing they did because Dash is on the cusp of breaking out big-time.

Dash has started a buzz in North Carolina, and there are some signs that more music lovers across the U.S. are catching on. The band’s lush, colorful synth flourishes and driving melodies may remind some of bands like Passion Pit, Phoenix and Phantogram, but Dash clearly stand out on their own merits. The single, “Into the Sounds,” is a catchy anthem that sticks in your head and keeps you wanting to hear more from this up and coming band. “Home” has a sense of urgency that is intensely captivating and dreamy. Into The Sounds is the band’s debut EP.

Cozy Danger – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Three friends were were prowling the “shadowy streets of Milwaukee one balmy summer night” in 2012, when it occurred to the “wonderfully chestbearded gentlemen” that they needed to share their blazing rock ‘n’ roll songs with the world, “instead of trolling the dump for lot lizards,” whatever that means. The unsigned Milwaukee trio proclaims that their music “will piss your cranky grand Dad right off. They’re just jealous cause hip grandma’s love our rock and roll bliss, known to interrupt pacemakers and cause extreme hot flashes.” Cozy Danger has opened for bands like Boy Blue, Sexy Ester, Bring Your Ray Gun and count among their biggest musical influences The Strokes, Jimi Hendrix, Rage Against the Machine, and Incubus.

timberhawk-album

Timberhawk – Pensacola, Florida

It’s time to switch gears. Timberhawk is a four piece indie-Americana rock group from Pensacola, Florida, featuring brothers Aubrey (vocalist; bass) and Matt Nichols (drums), as well as Jordan Richards (rhythm guitar/vocals), Nathan Dillaha (lead guitar). The band members met in high school in 2001 and “immediately felt musically drawn to each other.” Since that time, the four 20-somethings have jammed together, written and recorded songs and released a debut EP, Reynosa, in 2010.

For nearly a decade, the band claims to have been the “most frequently gigging bar band” in Pensacola, but after years of playing other band’s songs, they became bored and decided to focus on writing and recording their own new material, some of which was released on Reynosa and their debut album, Tears, Sweat and The Sea, released last November. Vocalist Audrey Nichols voice sounds somewhat like Michael Stipes (REM). With edgy, taunting guitar riffs, a heavy, droning bass and danceable beats featured on southern rock singles like “Down By The River” and “Metairie,” Timberhawk are set to grow in popularity – they just need more exposure, which is part of why they’re a band an IRC DIY band to watch. The band’s style of music is a reflective of their biggest influences, including The Marshall Tucker Band, The Gills, The Band, Wilco, Radiohead, Iron and Wine, and My Morning Jacket.

Carry The Tradition – Boulder, Colorado

Here’s an artist that we liked immediately, especially because of the track, “Mirrors” – it’s simple, lo-fi, predominantly acoustic, no frills. The band is Carry The Tradition from the town of Queensbury located in the foothills of New York’s Adirondack Mountains. All 20 years old, they started out as a trio when they were only 14 years old, featuring Jon Cantiello on drums, Chris Cronin on guitar, and Jesse Bolduc on bass.

But things changed last summer when Cantiello returned to his native country of Colombia, at which time the remaining members relocated to Boulder, Colorado, sleeping on the floor of a shared bedroom while they recorded the songs for the album Garbage. The songs are written by Cronin and Bolduc. We often are attracted to these type of artists because they’re genuine and sincere; they’re not putting on any aires or trying to fit into a mold in an effort to seek approval. We like that they’re just who they are and not trying to win anyone over by being something they’re not. They actually started rocking together at the tender age of 14 years. Their major musical influences include The Beatles, Bon Iver, Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and Cream. That’s quite a diverse and excellent selection of artists to have as influences, all of which happen to be geniuses in their own way. In their submission to IRC, Bolduc wrote that indie rock is “rock that has free expression and no boundaries. No influence from the fat cats for industry majors. [Indie rock] generally has a distinct, honest sound.”

flashriot

Flash Riot – Chicago, Illinois

Bloggers and fans have described Chicago alternative rock band Flash Riot sound as a mix between the dark atmosphere of Neon Trees, the edgy grooves of Muse and the angst of the Foo Fighters. In May, the newly formed band, released their self-titled debut EP, which they collaborated on with the talented producer Marc McClusky, who is known for this work with Weezer, Bad Religion, and Social Distortion. The EP is definitely one of the best alt. rock debuts this year from a new band. “The intention of this band,” said drummer Jon Lewchenko, “is to bring back hard hitting rock music. Not just something that we can make sound good in the studio, but can make an imprint at every show we play.”

Featuring DIY Bands on IRC

Many of the artists we profile on IRC have had little to no independent coverage online. Often, bands are so new that they haven’t had time to be noticed. Other bands, despite being immensely talented, do not actively promote their work. The lack of publicity and promotion, as difficult as that is to do with thousands of other bands to compete for space with, is a key reason why so many terrific artists are not more widely known. That’s why IRC is one of the few indie blogs where DIY and indie music lovers with great tastes in music, and an unshakeable love for under appreciated artists, can come to each week, or a few times a week, to hear and download amazing music that is not found anywhere else organized into regular playlist series, and where the songs are available to stream and download for months, even years, after the original date of the post. We still have posts and profiles of bands from years ago where the music is still available, whether we host it or encourage the bands themselves to host their songs for as long as possible.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. VI – Jim Platt’s Rhythm Innovation, Controller, The Gallery, Daybreak Gentlemen, False Pterodactyl

jimplattThe 5 DIY Bands to Watch series has had a pretty solid response from readers and listeners, so we’re going to keep rolling them out. These are bands that we have picked up on somewhere or another (usually from music submissions), and that we’ve been listening to more than a couple of times, and each time we do, the more convinced we have become that they should be included in this DIY Bands to Watch series.

In fact, almost all of the bands in the 5 DIY Bands to Watch series are otherwise pretty much unknown (even to indie music enthusiasts), ‘under the radar,’ and most have never been featured on a major indie rock blog or website, which makes them all that more appealing to us as well as many of our regular readers who return to IRC again and again – some since we started in 2008 – exactly for that reason: to hear great songs from artists and bands that they’ve never heard of before and will unlikely hear of anywhere else.

jimplattsalbumart

Jim Platt’s Rhythm Innovation – Greensburg, Pennsylvania

It’s almost hard to believe that a band with such a well-honed, mature sound as that of Greensburg, Pennsylvania DIY band Jim Platt’s Rhythm Innovation only officially formed last year. Last summer, singer/songwriter Jim Platt‘s collaborator and guitarist Scott Ruffner brought in a studio drummer and bass player to help them record a batch of songs Platt had been working on for months. They quickly decided on a band name, and immediately began bringing Platt’s songs to live for the debut EP, Moving Through The Ages, officially released last November. Ever since we started listening to the EP in early May, we knew they were going to be one of our DIY Bands to Watch in 2013.

Platt’s keen pop sensibilities in his songwriting style and the quirky nature of his lyrics and themes are brought to life wonderfully thanks to his impressive made-to-sing vocals and the professional interpretations of his band mates, who master their instruments in one song after another. In fact, we like every track on Platt’s EP, and posthumously, Moving Through The Ages is one of our favorite DIY EP’s of 2012.

From the sense of isolation and irony of “All Alone in My Dreams,” to the radio-ready 70s pop zeal of “Cherry Blossom Girl,” to the off-colored silliness of “Drama Queen,” Jim Platt and the Rhythm Innovation show great promise for fans of finely structured music that mixes elements of pop, rock and folk with a range of themes that give the music a light-hearted quality about it. Platt named The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, The Who, and Oasis as major musical influences, which is completely apparent in his songs.

In reference to the genre of indie rock, which allows artists to explore so many types of sounds and styles in their own unique way, Platt said that indie rock is “music that is better then the mainstream music of now – [it has] more feeling, more heart, more soul; something current music lacks.” It’s amazing how many definitions of indie rock are appropriate, which is what allows it to be the genre of just about anything that is not on the Billboard Top 10 or MTV.

Controller – Brooklyn, New York

Controller is a new four piece band from Brooklyn that delivers propulsive pop rock songs with new wave tendencies via densely layered guitars, impassioned post-punk rhythms and catchy melodic hooks, generating a sound designed for maximum impact on stage and on record. Vocalist Jonathan Bellinger, guitarist Josh Shabtai, bassist Brian Dell and drummer Keith Gordon have each spent years separately writing and performing in different bands that spanned the spectrum of genres from punk, country, pop, metal, and rock.

In 2012, these four musician friends decided to meld their disparate influences to counter what they perceive to be a “lack of real feeling and passion” in mainstream pop music and the NYC indie rock scene (one exception being a recent IRC Artist of the Week from NYC, The Rotaries). From their earliest rehearsals in a storage space in Queens, Controller honed a massive sound, focused around anthemic, surging songs designed to be played for live audiences. Their live shows are sweaty, ferocious affairs, where the band plays with fearless conviction and total commitment.

Earlier this year, the band took to the studio to capture the frenzied energy of their live shows on a three-song, self-titled debut EP. The band has previously opened for No TV Tonight and Nude Beach, among others, and their top musical influences are Wire, Buzzcocks, Nirvana, Katy Perry, Scott Walker, David Bowie, and Louder Than War.

“Indie rock isn’t just a style of music or production or band or business. Every band has, at some point, been an indie band. Bands that stay indie bands are the ones that focus on their relationships with their audiences above all other parties (e.g., labels, lawyers, brands, etc.)” – Jonathan Bellinger, Controller

The Gallery – Los Angeles, California

Originally formed in 2008, The Gallery is an up-and-coming unsigned band based in Los Angeles whose music can be described as a modern take on classic rock with Top 40 hooks and melodies. In fact, the band, originally from Massachusetts (a continent away from California) was selected in 2012 as contestants for a high visibility contest, ‘Do You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star?’, by the editors of Rolling Stone magazine. The special edition’s goal was to pick a promising, unsigned band to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. While they did not win the contest, just having been considered by the editors of America’s premiere rock magazine is a huge compliment for any band or artist, let alone an unsigned band that most people have never heard of.

The band features Brendan Cooney (vocals/guitar), Ben Lozano (guitar), Dave Mozdzanowski (bass, vocals), and Ryan Cooney (drums). The band released their new album, Restless, in February. The album was recorded with producer Warren Huart (Augustana, The Fray, Aerosmith), who also produced the band’s 2011 EP, Come Alive. That’s a damn big score for the band to work with a producer of that caliber, not once, but twice! The Gallery has toured throughout the U.S., performing in more than 30 states.

The Gallery have opened for artists such as Minus The Bear, Rooney and Sam Roberts, to name a few, and consider among their top musical influences Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Oasis, and Coldplay. Get more info at The Gallery’s official website.

Daybreak Gentlemen – Toronto, Canada

After two years of highs and lows since forming in 2011, Toronto unsigned indie rock band Daybreak Gentlemen have established themselves in the city’s music scene and are now poised to go nationwide. The band’s new release, The Beachwood Demos, dropped back in February, and the band’s energetic live shows, have helped fuel the band’s popularity, lead by the lively, Strokes-sounding single, “Dead Teenagers,” complete with catchy guitar hooks and great vocals. Local radio station 102.1 FM, nicked-named, “The Edge Toronto,” tagged the band as “one of the top indie bands to watch” following the release of Daybreak Gentlemen’s 2012 self-titled debut EP.

The band is made up of brothers Josh Niven and Zack Niven, Ryan Fyfe, Ryan Salvatore, and “the enigmatic” Bingo Pyjama. The Niven brothers’ vocals split between Josh’s cool and collective style, and Zack’s more brash and chaotic delivery. The band has played all over Toronto during the past 18 months, and also performed buzz-worthy sets at the NXNE and KOI music festivals last summer.

Now that their most recent tour has ended, Zack and Bingo are writing new material and vetting it with the other band members. They plan to start recording a new master tape this fall. Josh said that the band will evolve their sound, and are currently writing songs using primarily synthesizers as an attempt to move away from their mostly guitar-driven songs. We’d recommend, based on songs like “Dead Teenagers” and “Belles,” that they don’t give up too much on their guitar sound. The band elaborates by describing their music this way: “Indie dance rock to the U.K. romantic era with infectious melodies, heavily layered guitar riffs, and fun ‘dancey synth’ elements tightly intertwined. Our ‘mid-fi’ approach, allows for a professional sound with the tie loosened.”

Daybreak Gentlemen has opened for bands like July Talk, Beliefs, Decades, Secret Broadcast, and The Danger Bees, and their major music influences include The Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Foals, and MGMT.

“Indie rock to us, is simply music without limitation. It it the freedom and ability to create music that is not polished, or set to fit a specific model. It is music that plays off raw emotion and real feelings, it fosters artistic honesty, love, and creativeness.” – Josh Niven, guitarist

falsepterodactyl

False Pterodactyl – Morgantown, West Virginia

False Pterodactyl was incarnated in 2012 following a jam session in Flatwoods, West Virginia among friends and musicians John Jacob and Josh Ratliff. Soon after, Jacob moved to Ratliff’s homebase of Morgantown, WV last summer, and the newly-formed duo began working tirelessly on songs for their debut EP, Shanghaied, released on January 20th.

Jacob is the duo’s multi-instrumentalist, playing baritone, acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, drums and vocals, with Ratliff on drums and guitar. According to Jacob the duo write “lean songs with a focus on rhythm, groove, and melody.” We were immediately won-over after listening to the blistering rocker, “Heavy Bop,” and the more chill “Hi-Top Fade” a few times back-to-back, making False Pterodactyl not only a band that rocks, but also a duo to watch in 2013 and beyond. Their musical influences include the Pixies, Nirvana, Flat Duo Jets, Drive By Truckers, The Stooges, and Nicki Minaj.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. V – Copies, Plastic Animals, Carson, Monkeybird, Sictor Valdana and The Check This Outs

copies-band-brazil During the past few months, IRC has published dozens of posts that highlight promising DIY and small label indie bands to watch, including the 5 DIY Bands to Watch series. For the fifth installment of this popular series, the focus turns to highlighting overseas unsigned bands like Copies (Brazil), Plastic Animals (Scotland); Carson (Switzerland); Monkeybird (Norway); and Sictor Valdana and The Check This Outs (Spain).

Copies – Sao Paulo, Brazil

Copies is a DIY garage rock/punk trio from São Paulo, Brazil, consisting of Christian Fontana on drums, Thiago Carvalho on vocals and guitars, and João Caetano on bass. On February 4th, the band released their debut EP, All The Clichés You Can Eat, that was mixed and mastered by legendary producer Ed Stasium (The Ramones, Mick Jagger, Talking Heads, The Misfits). When any band has someone of Stasium’s caliber at the helm, that’s a good indication of a band’s talent and promise, and one can only imagine that they will continue to get better with such valuable, expert input that someone like Stasium offers. There are not many bands that can say they recorded their debut EP with the former producer of The Ramones and Mick Jagger.

Plastic Animals – Edinburgh, Scotland

Formed in Edinburgh in 2006, the band began to play local gigs and soon established a name for themselves in the local scene and eventually throughout the U.K. Their sound is heavy, melodic and atmospheric. Plastic Animals has previously opened for bands like P.S. I Love You, Milk Maid, The Scottish Enlightenment, Molly Wagger, PAWS, and The Douglas Firs, and consider among their top musical Influences artists like Grandaddy, Dinosaur Jr, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile, My Bloody Valentine, Guided By Voices and Deerhunter.

Carson – Luzern, Switzerland

Carson is an alternative stoner rock trio based in Luzern, Switzerland, but originally hails from Auckland, New Zealand, where it was founded by frontman Kieran Mortimer-Jones in 2009. The line-up was tweaked a few times before the then four-piece band went on tour throughout the small island nation. Throughout 2010, they built a reputation as a buzz band across New Zealand. But it was in 2011, when Carson released a seven-track EP, that they began to receive extensive national radio exposure.

Without explanation, Jones suddenly moved to Switzerland at the height of the band’s popularity, where he constructed a completely new trio of musicians, and kept the band name Carson, which is an unusual move since the original band was fairly popular in New Zealand, only includes the founding member and they’re based in Europe. Plus, it makes it that much harder to search for information online about the band. Nevertheless, the new Carson has found some success in Switzerland, an endeavor that was recently enhanced with the release of their self-titled album last December. The band’s influences include Truckfighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zepplin, Kyuss, and Soundgarden.

Monkeybird – Harstad, Norway

From northern Norway comes the indie folk rock duo, Monkeybird, who are surprisingly practically unknown to even hard-core DIY indie music listeners. Formed in late 2011, the duo features Polarfox Records‘ founder Dan Slettevolden, along with his long-time creative cohort, producer and multi-instrumentalist Paal André Brekkaas. Their debut album, Born to Roam, was released on September 21, 2012 in the Europe.   We got a hold of two of the tracks from the album, which you can stream below. Monkeybird has real potential and is now a bright blip on our indie music radar. The duo list among their main musical influences as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac, Sparklehorse, The Beatles and Daniel Johnston. That’s a solid and diverse compendium of artists and bands to draw inspiration from for any musician, and you can hear hints of some of those influences in “Born to Roam” and “Release.”

sictorvaldana

Sictor Valdana and The Check This Outs – Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona DIY lo-fi band Sictor Valdana and The Check This Outs deliver their unique brand of genre mixing by blending indie rock, chill wave, folk, punk and garage on their sophomore album II, creating spacious, dynamic, enthralling and rhythmic music on studio recordings and during live performances. Síctor Valdaña and The Check This Outs was born in January 2010 as a one-man project that soon evolved into a trio. Only months after forming, the band was tapped to perform at the A Viva Veu showcase (Primavera Sound) and were even featured in the Festival Hoteler’s promotional video. True to form, the band embraces DIY ethos, recording tracks in their basement with clunky gear, shoe-string budgets and endless hours of rehearsals. One clear indication of their independent status is the unconventional duration of their songs, ranging from 20 seconds to six minutes. The band listed their top musical influences as The Replacements, Jawbreaker, NOFX, The Who, Bauhaus, and Eels.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. IV – White Like Fire, Aware Wolf, Peace Arrow, Raheem Cohen, and Spoons & Chopsticks

whitelikefireband
Anyone who has been following IRC for some time knows that we roll differently than most indie and alternative music blogs and sites. In a given year, we feature hundreds of DIY and small label bands and artists that are not as well-known as they should be compared to their talents. Having listened to thousands of bands via our submission box, or that we’ve come across on the web and been referred to by others, in the past five years, we’re constantly blown away by how much under-the-radar talent there is in the States and around the world. Many of these bands get their first significant exposure on IRC.

We’re simply convinced after listening to these tracks over and over again during the past few weeks that this band, and the others featured in any number of profiles and playlists, are making great music that more people need to hear. Every time we feature a largely unknown, and totally DIY, artist or band, and they get a positive response from readers (via views, Likes and Tweets), we feel like we’re making a little tiny bit of indie history (how pretentious!). And so, here is the fourth edition of 5 DIY Bands to Watch in 2013 – White Like Fire, Aware Wolf, Peace Arrow, Raheem Cohen, and Spoons & Chopsticks.

See this little embedded player right here? If you click that, it’ll play all the songs on this page. We’ll have a new player soon.

Pittsburgh DIY band to watch White Like Fire

White Like Fire – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Fans of Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Joe Jackson, and Jackson Browne take note. But fans of Matt & Kim, The Killers and Weezer also take note. Pittsburgh DIY quartet, White Life Fire, consists of brothers, Blake and Tyler Clawson, Evan Cresswell and Joe Killian, a new wave/pop rock band worth taking note of. They create heavily melodic, spirited, fast-driving pop rock tracks that sound like they should be on the radio 30 years ago, as the track “Dead People” demonstrates, as well as the Weezer and The Killers-sounding melodies of the track, “Lies.” Three of the band members moved from the hinterlands of the Pennsylvania countryside to set-up shop in Pittsburgh, where they met Killian to form WLF and attend school at U of Pitt. The band suddenly attracted a local following and in late January released their second EP, Lies. “We love playing as hard as we can for our fans and our fans love it when we light things on fire,” Clawson said.

The band has shared the stage with All Time Low, Hounds Below, the Von Bondies‘ side project as well as Black Kids‘ side project, Alex Goot and Brian Olive (Greenhornes), and name bands like The Chariot and The Cribs among their favorites.

New York Duo Aware Wolf on the Watch List

From New York, DIY duo Aware Wolf. Having met in school, the members of Aware Wolf started writing songs together with a simple mission of being “a kick-ass rock band.” AW’s style combines the grungy color of garage rock with the catchiness of indie pop. Recently, they wrote, recorded and self-released a three-song debut EP and are currently working on another EP and planning live shows. We’ll definitely keep you informed of updates from the band; in the meantime, check out these two attention-getting singles.

Peace Arrows – Gainesville, Florida

Peace Arrow is the solo project of Gainesville musician Mitch Myers, who has been active in experimental band Hear Hums since 2009. Peace Arrow borrows from the same sound palette of Hear Hums’ recent output, which is no doubt heavily influenced by Animal Collective, as the spacey, experimental sounds and effects on tracks like “Gems” and “Doors” from his debut album ↑↓↑↓, demonstrate. Myers’ view on indie rock is that it’s “rooted in DIY attitudes, letting the touring band who booked their own tour crash on your floor, [it’s] music that won’t necessarily come find you.” Let us know what you think of his synth bliss.

Raheem Cohen – Los Angeles, California

The three brothers, and two childhood friends, who make up the Los Angeles DIY band Raheem Cohen have spent most of their adolescence playing local gigs at L.A. hotspots like the Roxy Theatre, Satellite, and Silverlake Lounge. During the past decade, they honed their skills and developed a unique multifaceted sound – one that deftly blends the funky, soul-based rock of yesterday with the alternative rock sounds of today, leaning towards the music of The Strokes, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, and TV on the Radio.

When the youngest brother entered his final year of high school, Raheem Cohen took their songs to the studio to record their first singles, and prepare for their introduction to the world outside of Silver Lake. On “Simpler,” the band’s debut single released last December, the young men (all still under drinking age) boldly deliver the carefree spirit of youth, the grit of city mayhem, and the confidence and musicianship of a band many years in the making. Their newest single, “Roads,” released on Feb. 28th, is new evidence that this close, young group of musicians is collectively a DIY band to watch, and on the IRC’s radar for 2013.

Spoons and Chopsticks – Elk River, Minnesota

Elk River, Minnesota DIY indie rock band Spoons and Chopsticks is has a well-honed pop rock style consisting of soaring guitars and vocals, melodic hooks, catchy rhythms and a driving beat. Other words that express their style and sound are passionate and humble, soft and outspoken – a paradox that works well, despite its obvious conflicts. The band is by no means cookie cutter.

Spoons and Chopsticks started their musical journey in mid-2010 as an acoustic three-piece fronted by a jazzy female singer, although you’d never know this by listening to their debut, self-titled album, released in late January. The thirteen tracks, totaling over an hour in length, are all different shapes and sizes, much like the band members themselves.

In addition to their new lineup, acquired fully in late 2010, their sound has changed dramatically from their beginnings, taking on a decidedly harder, more driving flavor. A new tour took them to several venues within Minnesota such as Station 4, The Fine Line Music Cafe, The Depot Coffeehouse, and The Garage in nearby Burnsville. The band has opened for artists like Carbon Tigers, Marah in the Mainsail, and Cosmonaught, and their major musical influences include Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Ling Tosite Sigure, Manchester Orchestra, Now Now, Periphery, Veil of Maya.

5 Indie Bands to Watch, Vol. III – Ballerina Black, Cursed Arrows, Skylight Avenue, Virginia Leaves, One High Five

ballerinablack
Los Angeles 'gloom-pop/mope-rock' band to watch, Ballerina Black
The first two editions of ‘5 DIY Indie Bands to Watch’ featured a number of talented, under-the-radar bands that most people had never heard of before, but based on the response to those posts, they’re sure glad they had, just as we were when we first reviewed the bands in this, the third edition.

[zbplayer]

In Volume II of 5 DIY Bands, readers were introduced to the latest singles from unsigned bands like Umbrella Cult, Roadkill Ghost Choir, No Shoes, Hints, and The Hoot Hoots. In the debut post of the 5 DIY Bands to Watch series, which has received, to date, over 35,000 views, 225 Likes on Facebook, and 35 Tweets, we profiled DIY bands like Hemmingbirds, Jumpiter, Cloud Lantern, The Jesus Rehab and Appalachians.

In Volume III, we are excited to present bands that we’ve received submissions from in recent weeks that we think people should hear. This series, and related posts, such as Recent Indie Bands; 7 Indie Bands You’ve Gotta Hear; In Dee Mail, Artist of the Week, among others, highlights indie rock bands that stand out among hundreds of submissions we’ve reviewed. Four of the artists featured below originally dropped their latest albums in February, while one band is set to release a new album in late April.

Ballerina Black – Los Angeles, California

It’s always amazing to us the numbers of talented bands and artists that we would have probably never heard if they hadn’t sent their music in for review. Those of you who’ve been reading (and listening) to IRC posts for any length of time know that we regularly post DIY bands that are largely unknown, under-the-radar bands. Add to that gigantic, and ever-growing list the Los Angeles DIY ‘gloom pop/mope rock’ band Ballerina Black, formed in 2009. While the band is not as obscure as other bands we feature all of the time (afterall, they’ve opened for Interpol and Silversun Pickups), they surely are not as widely known as their talents dictate they should be. Let’s change that.

The band has a couple of unique ways to describe their sound, consisting of three sub-genres we’d never heard of before – driving mope-rock, gloom pop and grave-wave. Well, that got our attention. In 2007, singer-songwriter Moynahan teamed up with bassist Sugich (we could not find full names for the band, interestingly enough) and immediately, we’re told “a telepathy was forged.” In 2010, after considerable work writing, recording and mixing songs, the duo completed and self-released their debut LP, Cattle Arithmetic, which caught on quickly in LA, which is in and of itself impressive for a city over-flowing with talented musicians and bands. In fact, the duo’s debut was so well-received by the local scene that they were booked to open for Silversun Pickups and Interpol at the famed Greek Theater.

Not long after, the duo sought a fuller sound and recruited two more members, a drummer (Anthos) and an additional guitarist/keyboardist (Eton). In 2012, the new band released a series of EPs titled Injureless Blå. One writer familiar with the band inked the following description: “Maybe if Nirvana had decided to do covers of The Cure might come close to hitting some planet of reference in the [Ballerina] Black universe surrounding these guys sound. What is apparent [is] the refreshingly austere catchy-ness of Ballerina Black’s message. But the biggest mystery still remains.” The first track was recently highlighted on the BBC.

Cursed Arrows - Sonic Union

Cursed Arrows – Brantford, Ontario

Cursed Arrows is the unisex rock duo Ryan and Jack E. Stanley from Brantford, Ontario that we were blown away by the first time we heard their bluesy rock guitar and drum romp, “Little Girl Blue,” that sounds like Jack White and PJ Harvey’s long-lost offspring. The track was IRC’s Song of the Day for March 11th.

Proclaiming that they “ain’t goin’ nowhere but up” and “won’t stop until we’re dead,” the duo are set to release their new album, Sonic Union, on April 30th via Ford Plant Recording Company. Not surprisingly, their musical influences include Patti Smith, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Jack White, to name a few.

“We have seen so many people and bands and buildings and pieces of land come and go, but we will never go away,” Jack E. Stanley told IRC. “As tempting as it is to disappear at times, that is simply impossible. If we knew we weren’t supposed to be making music for the rest of our lives, we would have quit a decade ago. If we could stop making music, we would [because] it’s tiring as hell.”

skylightavenue

Skylight Avenue – Eugene, Oregon

Skylight Avenue is a good name for the Eugene, Oregon DIY band headed by Jordan Poet. Formed only last year, the band produces well-written, wonderfully composed, expertly recorded and finely mixed songs that have a ‘skylight’ sense about them, which is evident when listening to the four songs on the band’s debut EP, The View From Here, that was self-released on February 18th.

On the song “Home,” the first minute in is a celestial sonic experience, and then again towards the end of the song, with the full involvement of the band, Poet’s impressive vocals, masterful, overlapping choruses, jubilant drumming, a grooving bass, and shimmering, soaring guitar playing signal that Skylight Avenue has the potential to go far beyond being a mostly under-the-radar band, and are definitely on our list of the Best New DIY Bands of 2013. As the second single, “This City Never Sleeps” demonstrates, the band’s sound is similar to artists like The Classic Crime, Go Radio, Thrice, Mayday Parade, Emery, and Relient K. We’d love to hear what you think via the Comments box below, on Facebook or Twitter.

Virginia+Leaves+portrait

Virginia Leaves – Vancouver, Canada

Mike Ness (Social Distortion) and Lucero fans are the most likely music lovers to dig the sounds of Vancouver band Virginia Leaves on their debut LP, Portrait. The band initially was an acoustic venture put together by long time friends, Mike West on guitar and vocals, and Mike “Strides” Brown on guitar. Later, Glenn Kelly on bass and Brian Michals on drums, joined to complete the formation of Virginia Leaves.

The band’s sound is a raunchy mix of DIY rock, country and punk. Producer Pierre Fraser of Resonant Mind Productions describes it as “elements of rock, with a thick mist of country blowing its way up from the south” with saccharine harmonies and catchy sing-alongs. The singles, “No Where’s Worse” and “Growing Older” are the kind of songs that make you want to crank it up, especially if you’re a fan of Mike Ness style music. The band’s top musical influences include Nirvana, Beatles, Deer Tick, and Sparta.

One High Five – Long Beach, California

After airplay on Los Angeles radio station KROQ‘s (106.7), Long Beach, California DIY band One High Five were invited to perform their first show at the famous Viper Room. For any band, especially a rather new DIY band (formed in 2011), to perform their first show at a legendary venue like The Viper Room is a big, big deal. A representative from High Voltage Magazine was at the show and Tweeted: “There’s a party on the stage, and it’s called ‘One High Five!'”

Singer and songwriter David Sauer‘s writes about life experiences – love, loss, hope and despair, and combines them with layered guitars, well-honed orchestration and appealing harmonies are at the core of its spell-bounding sound. While One High Five is in theory a one-man band, Sauer demos are recorded at his studio with collaboration from other musicians, “a rotating crew of friends and strangers” that also join Sauer on stage in performances around southern California, across the states and even China, of all places. Sauer’s songs draw off of some of his favorite bands like Green Day, The Beach Boys and CAKE. The track, “Tear Down The Wall,” on the debut release, Here, Hear!, reminds may remind some listeners ofus a bit of Jack White – the White style of vocals and guitar/drumming are there.

5 DIY Bands To Watch, Vol. II – Umbrella Cult, Roadkill Ghost Choir, No Shoes, Hints, The Hoot Hoots

umbrellacultBased on a number of recent, popular DIY posts, it’s clear that many people who dig indie and alternative music particularly like to read about and listen to music from talented, under-the-radar bands they’ve never heard of before.

[zbplayer]

Each week, we feature DIY and ‘underground’ bands and artists that are making music just as good (and sometimes better) than artists and bands who receive plenty of blog love, praise from the mainstream press, fan adulation and financial success.

We’ve reviewed and listened to music from hundreds of submissions in recent months, and narrowed down our favorites into a number of posts recently, such as the 7 Bands You’ve Gotta Hear, DIY Bands to Watch, and the Artist of the Week series, in addition to Best New Releases and a variety of other posts featuring DIY and signed indie artists.

It’s still always amazing to us, after all of these years of reviewing under-the-radar bands, just how many excellent bands we profile who are largely unknown. That fact makes them, in our view, even more special (as long as they don’t go the way of a band like fun. where everyone knows that one way overplayed song), which is clearly why people come back to IRC – for great music the rest of the blogsophere is missing out on.

Umbrella Cult – Sarasota, Florida

In December, the Sarasota, Florida DIY band Umbrella Cult released their debut album. However, the fact that it came out only four days before Christmas means that it basically got lost in the crush of the holidays, when people are not really paying attention to new releases. In 2011 and 2012, the band’s gritty production style and high energy concerts quickly garnered them a strong and loyal fan base in their hometown and the surrounding region. The band purposely embraces the “raw and reverb-y production of the 60’s and 70’s,” to create a sound that is balanced by modern and vintages aesthetics.

In 2012, the band began work on an entirely self-produced album in Lee’s foreclosed childhood home (long ago nicknamed the “Umbrella Cult”, which seemed the appropriate name when the band formed). Recording nearly 30 songs during the home sessions, the band members eventually narrowed it down to the 14 tracks on their debut LP, Apocalove.

“Another One Goes”Umbrella Cult from Apocalove

“New Mistakes”Umbrella Cult from Apocalove

Umbrella Cult covers all kinds of genres from alt. pop and indie rock to garage rock and psychedelic. Originally formed in 2011, Umbrella Cult counts among their top musical influences excellent bands such as Guided By Voices, The Kinks, The Smiths, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Magnetic Fields, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

In response to a question included on the IRC submission form (“What is indie rock?”), band member Promise Hope (yup, that’s his name), replied: “indie rock is spirited and thoughtful music that has the freedom to operate independently of the well-worn style and genre constrictions. Indefinable perhaps, its sounds are as varied as it’s purveyors.” We like that take on the subject – well put.

Roadkill Ghost Choir – Deland, Florida

From the Florida swamp lands filled with alligators and cypress trees covered with Spanish moss, has emerged the relatively new ambient folk band, Roadkill Ghost Choir. In recent months, the band of brothers – quite literally – have exploded in popularity, selling out gigs up and down the east coast, and landing spots in the lineups for various festivals, including South by Southwest (SXSW) and other musical events. The ball got rolling for RKGC last year when Andy Shepard (vocals, guitar) was invited to perform a gig at a local club. Not wanting to perform solo because he feared it would be boring, Andy recruited his brothers – and brothers Maxx Shepard (drums) and Zach Shepard (bass) to join him on stage. And that was the planting of the seed.

Soon after, the band was completed with the addition of Kiffy Meyers (pedal steel, banjo, guitar), Joey Davoli (keys, trumpet) and Stephen Garza (lead guitar). Indie music lovers have clearly shown over the years that they love indie folk music, as evidenced by the success of bands like Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Avett Brothers, among others. The bands debut EP, Quiet Light, was released in September of last year, produced by David Plakon and mastered by Doug Van Sloun (Bright Eyes, She & Him).

No Shoes – Brooklyn, New York

No Shoes is a Brooklyn prog-punk quartet consisting of Fabian Kaupert and Arcody Ruin, both guitarists and vocalists, plus, bassist Dan Kunkel and drummer Emilio Herce. Since launching the band a year and a half ago, No Shoes has formed a underground following, including plenty of women, which is inspiration to the band members, on more than one level. Herce told IRC: “We are known for our high energy show and eclectic time signatures. A surprising number of faces in the crowd during our sets are young and attractive females.”

The band’s new EP, Mingling, was released last September by Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen. No Shoes have opened for bands like Viva Mayday, Jangula, Osekre and The Lucky Bastards, and named some of their major musical influences as Banzai, Fall of Troy, The Mars Volta, and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Hints – Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn unsigned new wave/post punk band Hints sent in a couple of tracks recently from their fresh release, Vol. I. Since forming as a musical project in the summer of 2011, the line-up has solidified with Garrett Morin on vocals and guitar, Matthew Fisher on drums, Collin Lewis on lead guitar and Wyeth Hansen on bass. Honing in on their individual, diverse talents, Hints set out to forge something entirely unique from the get-go. “Our goal has been to make something both fun and earnest that honors influences without becoming derivative,” according to Lewis. Among the band’s top musical influences are bands like Orange Juice, The Church, The Cure, and Echo & The Bunnymen. They’ve recently shared the stage with bands like Menahan Street Band, Owen & The Eyeballs, Rifle Recoil, Relations, Ash Reiter and Jenny Besetzt. On January 29th, the band released a new double single available via the Hints Bandcamp page.

The Hoot Hoots – Seattle, Washington

The Hoot Hoots, hailing from the beautiful city of Seattle, have been dishing their brand of fuzzy power pop to local admirers for the last three years. Their latest LP, Appetite for Distraction, gained critical praise that paved the way for the band’s latest release, an EP titled, Feel the Cosmos. The Hoot Hoots fun, whimsical songs have been compared to artists like The Flaming Lips, The Unicorns, and The Shins. Such comparisons to legendary artists for a largely unknown, DIY band is no doubt a risky assertion, but The Hoot Hoots meet the requirements in this case. The band was founded by brothers Adam Prairie (lead vocals/guitar) and Chris Prairie (drums), and was completed when they recruited musicians Geoff Brown to play bass and Christina Ellis as the resident synth master.

5 DIY Bands to Watch, Vol. I – Hemmingbirds, Jumpiter, Cloud Lantern, The Jesus Rehab and Appalachians

hemmingbirds

Over the past few months, we have received, and reviewed, hundreds of submissions from mostly DIY artists and bands. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing the best artists of the hundreds of submissions we’ve reviewed (and will continue to review) with you via a number of playlists series that highlight talented unsigned bands that deserve to be heard. This is the first volume of 5 DIY Bands to Watch in 2013.

Hemmingbirds – Chicago, Illinois

Riding on the success of their debut record, Death Wave, released in 2010, Chicago indie rock band Hemmingbirds began working on its follow-up early in 2012. Departing from the original solo writing process (attributed to band leader Yoo Soo Kim) of Death Wave, Hemmingbirds worked on their sophomore effort, The Vines of Age, collectively. As a result, the album marks a transition from the group’s original folk- influenced sound into something heavier, noisier and more soulful.

Jumpiter – Brooklyn, New York

Jumpiter is the musical project of Brooklyn solo artist Sean Schuyler, who writes and records in his ‘cramped’ apartment with the goal of channeling his “inner Jimmy Page to make some fun headphone listening.” While any Jimmy Page comparison is way off from the reality, the two songs featured below are pretty good for a solo artist few have heard of. In November, Jumpiter self-released a self-titled fifth release, featuring a  collection of hard-rock and power-pop songs touching on darkness and humor in songs like “Asbestos Of The Gods” and “Bugspray.”

Cloud Lantern – Albuquerque, New Mexico

From the magical desert southwest area of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cloud Lantern blipped on our radar with their self-produced DIY release of the EP, Songs for Eluard. The band integrates post-punk, surf pop, garage rock, shoegaze and math-rock, and have become well-known within Albuquerque DIY indie rock scene. The new EP is a tribute to the poet Paul Eluard, whose contributions to the surrealist art movement are well-noted.

Cloud Latern’s sound is risque, enthralling and accessible; the first single, “Backgammon,” is a bright, sunny summer day, lo-fi surf pop track, featuring a driving drum beat, crashing cymbals, and lo-fi, surf rock guitars jamming away. The second single, “Pushkin Around,” is yet another surf pop mixed with post-punk track that comes off very much like a noise pop or power pop track. The band most recent release was in July of 2012.

jesusrehab

The Jesus Rehab – Seattle, Washington

The Jesus Rehab is a Seattle DIY indie rock band that has its roots in southwest Michigan, where lead singer Jared Cortese and his brother, Dominic Cortese, began to write and record the songs that would later become the band’s first EP, Scatterbrained in 2007. The EP was well-received, and the band extensively toured the Pacific Northwest, and also appeared at South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2010. The band’s sound is marked by powerful vocals and driving rhythms which have led to comparisons to bands like OK Go, The Flaming Lips and Weezer, the latter being most apparent to us. Last April, they dropped their new album, Drunken Hillbilly Fight Bar, and sent us in these two singles.

Appalachians – Sacramento, California

Appalachians is a Sacramento DIY duo formed in 2010 by musicians Marshall Van Leuven and Trevor Dahl. The duo first met in a jazz band in the 6th grade, and have been making music together ever since. In addition to songwriting and singing, Van Leuven and Dahl play guitars, banjos, mandolins, washboards, among other instruments. In July of 2012, the duo dropped their debut album, The Rolling C’s, featuring terrific songs like “Playing Pretend” and “Outro.” We’re looking forward to what the duo release this year; apparently, there is a new album in the works.

5 Bands to Watch in 2011, Vol. II – Alcoholic Faith Mission, The Luyas, Elsinore, California Wives, Dada Trash Collage

Last week, we published our first installment of Bands to Watch in 2011. Instead of including one really long listing, we decided to break them up into five bands per installment. There’s plenty of evidence that people like things divided up into 5’s and 10’s. The first installment of 5 Bands to Watch in 2011 got tens of thousands of page hits, so we finished up volume two of this series which puts the spotlight on the following bands: Alcoholic Faith Mission (pictured above), The Luyas, California Wives, Dada Trash Collage and Elsinore.

Alcoholic Faith Mission – Copenhagen, Denmark and Brooklyn, New York

Little by little, more and more people are hearing about the fantastic Danish indie electro-pop band Alcoholic Faith Mission. During the waning months of 2010, AFM were beginning to breakout. We think 2011 is the year they’ll smash through.

AFM initially started out with ex-pat Danes Thorben Seiero Jensen and Sune Solund carving out a couple of fantastic releases in 2009 that caught the attention of European indie blogs and press. For their latest album, Let This Be the Last Night We Care, the band expanded their membership, adding a number of fellow Scandinavians – Laurids Smedegaard, Kristine Permild,  and Gustav Rasmussen – to round out the line-up.

“My Eyes To See”Alcoholic Faith Mission from Let This Be the Last Night We Care

With interesting song titles like “Got Love/Got Shellfish!,” “Season Me Right,” and, “The You, That You Could Use,” Alcoholic Faith Mission obviously enjoy the quirky side of indie rock. In fact, they remind us more and more of a cross between Arcade Fire and Sufjan Stevens, and so it would not be a big surprise if those artists’ music has had a significant influence on AFM – quirky titles; sprawling, epic compositions; sudden stops and starts; spontaneous flourishes of orchestration and infusions of brass and wind instruments; and lots of chorus singing and sudden stops and starts.

“Got Love/Got Shellfish!”Alcoholic Faith Mission from from Let This Be the Last Night We Care

The first signs of the musical genius of Jessen and Solund emerged when they released AFM’s 2009 EP, 421 Wythe, named after the Brooklyn  home where they recorded. 421 is simply a magnificent album that switches between songs with vibrant, inspiration choruses and instrumental perfection, and other times when the wonderfully crafted compositions are deliciously dreamy, and sometimes, comfortably numbing.

Songs like “Escapism”, “Gently,” and “Guilty Scared Eyes” and are at once luring, larger than life, flourishing. The previous band comparisons aside, AFM are extremely talented and craft indie orchestrations with sober lyrics and flourishing choruses, even while not taking themselves too seriously, such as on fantastic songs   like “Nut in Your Eye” and “We All Have Your Shortcomings.”

“Nut in Your Eye”Alcoholic Faith Mission from 421 Wythe

“We All Have Your Shortcomings”Alcoholic Faith Mission from 421 Wythe

With two solid records under their belt, it’s no wonder that more and more people are taking notice of AFM over the past half year or so. For those who enjoy the songs we’ve included in this profile, you’ll really want to get the albums the tracks come from. The more we listen to Let This Be The Last Night We Care and 421 Wythe, the more we love this band.

As we noted previously, these are the works of gifted musicians and songwriters, who are able to create sweeping epic songs that build up to a thrilling choruses, and are embellished with brass and string instruments. And you can almost feel while you’re listening to their songs like they realize they’ve got something special, and are happy to share it. All things considered, it was easy to pick Alcoholic Faith Mission as one of our top Bands to Watch in 2011. Let us know what you think!

The Alcoholic Faith Mission will be playing a number of shows in Canada next month, and a show at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on March 15th, before heading to Austin for the South by Southwest festival. They’re definitely on our schedule for SXSW.

“The You That You Could Use”Alcoholic Faith Mission from Let This Be the Last Night We Care

Alcoholic Faith Mission have at least three gigs booked for SXSW in Austin next month. See the band’s MySpace page for more.

The Luyas – Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Over the past couple of years, the indie experimental band The Luyas have made little splashes in a big pond. But things really picked up for the band after their debut album, Faker Death, was re-released in 2008, and following appearances at popular Montreal music festivals. Yet, as far as in the States, The Luyas didn’t start to grab attention until the later half of 2010, especially after their praised performance at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon last October. The Luyas are set to perform at South By Southwest in just a couple of weeks from now.

The band have grown in number over the past couple of years, and it has benefited them greatly. In fact, former Arcade Fire French horn player, Pietro Amato (who also plays with Bell Orchestre and Torngat) joined the band. And Arcade Fire collaborator Owen Pallett contributed string arrangements and violin to some tracks on The Luyas’ latest album, Too Beautiful to Work. In addition, the band turned to engineer Jeff McMurrich (Tindersticks, Constantines) for their second album. Founding member Jessie Stein (vocals/guitars/moodswinger) has also played with SS Cardiacs and Miracle Fortress, and is skilled at playing the Moodswinger, a 12-string electric zither created by the Dutch experimental luthier Yuri Landman. Another founding member, Stefan Schneider (drums), plays with Amato in Bell Orchestre. Recently, they added their fourth permanent member, Mathieu Charbonneau (Wurlitzer).

With their lush, electro-pop sounds, trippy orchestrated loops and heavy bass lines, heavy use of strings, plus the charms of the Moodswinger and a Wurlitzer. We included a number of tracks from The Luyas sophomore album, Too Beautiful to Work, released last Tuesday to impressive reviews.

“Too Beautiful” The Luyas from Too Beautiful To Work – Feb. 22nd

After hearing the title track, plus another song that circulated in 2010, “Tiny Head,” we were excited to listen to the band’s entire newly released debut LP. Not because we needed more proof that they qualified as a band to watch in 2011, but simply because we enjoyed the first few tracks so much, we wanted more. Plus, we’re also including a song from the band’s first album.

california wives

California Wives – Chicago, Illinoise

As with Suns, California Wives is another Chicago band we are only recently acquainted with. California Wives, thanks to the accomplished work on their Affair EP (released last September), are definitely on our Bands to Watch list for 2011.  In recent months, the band’s fan following in Chicago has begun to spread outside of the city, and across the nation with a blog post here and there.

A sign of a new band’s prospects, one could say, is if they are invited to record a Daytrotter Session.  The band recently recorded their intro DTS, and we expect that is only the beginning for this promising new band.  We think you’d be really glad to grab a copy of  Affair if you can. The band will be performing a number of shows in Austin during next month’s SXSW.

Dada Trash Collage – Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis experimental psychedelic rock band Dada Trash Collage where on our radar for 2010, and have elevated to a band to watch in 2011.  DTC are all over the map musically, and it works to their benefit. At once you can be hazed out and then wrapped an epic glory in the same song.  When they say they are experimental, they’re not kidding.

“Moon” – Dada Trash Collage from Cool Waves/Bad Days

Songs like “Moon” and “Two Eyes” have soft, dreamy intros, but by mid-song, the band breaks out into full-throttled, unabashed psychedelic bliss pop. Dada Trash Collage have received some pretty good blog buzz (including on here in 2010), and have built a small, but loyal, following. But still, we think, as evidenced by the songs below, that the band are ready to break out in 2011 if all the right chips are in the right places.

Elsinore – Champaign-Urbana, Illinois

Champaign-Urbana pop quintet Elsinore is one of the best new band discoveries for our In Dee Mail playlist series throughout 2010. When we premiered the songs below late last year, you guys went crazy for the Illinois band, streaming and downloading the band’s songs from IRC in the hundreds and hundreds, and putting the been on the Top Ten Songs list. Therefore, it is no wonder that we have chosen Elsinore as a band to watch in 2011. Elsinore’s upbeat, catchy melodies and rock influences make them a band that is hard to turn away from.

5 Bands to Watch in 2011, Vol. I: Yuck, The Pass, Watch Out For Rockets, We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, Church of the Very Bright Lights

Yuck has members from locales such as New Jersey, London, Scotland, and Hiroshima.

The bands to watch in 2011 queue is already filling up fast, and it’s only the second week of February. Right now, we are in a weird push-and-pull situation, in which we’re trying to wrap up all of the ‘best of 2010’ music playlists as well as stay on top of highlighting the best new 2011 music that we are hearing.  This is the first installment of IRC’s Bands to Watch in 2011 series.

We hope that you discover some bands that you dig but have never heard until now.  Of course, we’ll be looking for your comments and tallying the songs that are played and downloaded the most from this post to see which make the Top Ten Songs list and which bands our readers like the most from this post and all the upcoming posts that will feature new bands. In fact, volume two of this series will be published this coming weekend. But first, we introduce you to Yuck, The Pass, Watch Out For Rockets, We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, and Church of the Very Bright Lights.

Yuck is the appropriate title for this cover art, but the album inside is amazing

Yuck – Various Locations

Obviously not concerned with some marketing director’s advice to consider a different name, the indie band, Yuck, are defying their namesake. In recent months, Yuck have been building the vital blogger buzz, if you will, and are now getting noticed by mainstream music critics.

Yuck’s MySpace page lists the band’s “location” as New Jersey, Hiroshima, London, Scotland, and United Kingdom. Now that’s an eclectic mix of musicians almost sure to produce some interesting musical results. And so they have with the upcoming release of their debut, self-titled album. Yuck are talented, fun, daring and obviously influenced by different genres and eras of rock, including alternative rock and post punk. Spin this blazing pop rock song, “Holing Out” to get the engines fired up.

In a recent profile of the band in the U.K. Guardian, writer Dave Simpson described Yuck’s sound this way:the sound a band of indie-loving kids who weren’t interested in dance music would have made 20 years ago: a cocktail of Dinosaur Jr noise, Lemonheads melody and Teenage Fanclub‘s wistfulness.”  We can almost guarantee that you be hearing more about this band in 2011.  If you thought rock was dead, Yuck is one example it’s here to stay.

Yuck are scheduled to perform a number of shows next month during Austin’s famous South by Southwest festival.

The Pass – Louisville, Kentucky

If we could go back and re-do it, we would have listed The Pass among the 50 break-through bands of 2010. The Louisville, Kentucky indie rock band have been stirring things up, by their packed live shows, blogger love and a growing fan base. However, The Pass are not as well known as other break-through bands of 2010 like Broken Bells or Local Natives. The first song we want you to hear from The Pass is the single that really got the ball rolling for the band on their debut album, Burst. Plus, check out a couple of songs from the band’s 2010 EP, Colors. Keep an ear out for The Pass this year.

“Trap of Mirrors”The Pass from Burst – Sept. 21st

“Crosswalk Stereo” The Pass from Colors EP – Feb. 23rd

“Colors” The Pass from Colors EP

Watch Out for Rockets – Austin, Texas

Watch Out for Rockets are an Austin-based punk psychedelic pop band, who really are all of those things and more.  One thing that you can’t do with this talented, but relatively unknown, band is to categorize their style. As the introduction indicates, they cover a wide range of genres and styles, literally from song to song. That’s a risky thing for a band to do, but WOFR pull it off impressively, on the free EP, Telepathic War Machine. The song that would probably connect with most people is the upbeat, almost 100% pure pop track, “Ghetto and Rye”.

“Ghetto and Rye”Watch Out For Rockets from Telephatic War Machine – Nov. 16th

The opening track, “Banshee on the Water”, is a low-fi psychedelic track that is creepy and catchy at the same time. It wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that the band are influenced by artists like Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Built to Spill, The Beatles and Janes Addiction. Those are the bands that popped into mind while listening to Telephatic War Machine. The title track is another stand out on the EP, with its psychedelic tinged pop song that sounds like it could have been a hit record on underground radio stations in 1969.

You can’t go wrong with this EP; afterall, it’s free. We’ll be watching out in 2011 for more from Watch Out For Rockets. And yes, they are also a band to watch in 2011.

“Big Lies” – Watch Out For Rockets from Beasts with Hearts of Gold (2009)

We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves – Brooklyn, New York

We’re assuming that the band name for Brooklyn‘s twee pop trio, We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, is intended to be ironic because the band seem to be enjoying themselves just fine. And, so are the folks who’ve been digging their tunes. In past couple of weeks, we’ve been enjoying their free BandCamp LP, most particularly the two songs featured here. Lead singer Giovanni Saldarriaga demonstrates great control and range, and has been compared to the likes of Colin Meloy (The Decemberists). Comprised of a bass, drums, and a guitar/singer, WCEO weaves simply structured, and incredibly catchy, pop songs.

The Church of Very Bright Lights – Calgary-Montreal, Canada

Last fall, Montreal-via-Calgary indie rock band The Church of Very Bright Lights quietly released their terrifically warm and mellow debut album, Gang Crimes, on the web a few weeks ago. Along with Calgary musician James Cullen, two members of the popular Canadian indie band, Women – Chris Reimer (drums) and Matt Flegel (bass) – spent the past year writing and recording songs for the album, which is available as a free download.
