Best Songs of 2012, Vol. II – The Lumineers, Jack White, Beach House, Edward Sharpe, Japandroids, Here We Go Magic, Zulu Winter

Lumineers Recently, Volume One of the Best Songs of 2012, was posted, highlighting the weekly No. 1 songs from January through March of 2012. The weekly Top 10 Songs playlists reflect which songs posted in a week – mainly from the Best New Releases series – are streamed and downloaded the most.

April 2012

April was a pretty good month for new releases. The first No. 1 track of the month went to perhaps the breakout band of the year, The Lumineers. The single, “Ho Hey,” from their self-titled debut became one of the most popular songs of the year, easily. The second No. 1 song of April went to another breakout band of the year – Alabama Shakes – who just a few weeks earlier were a huge hit at South By Southwest. “Hold On,” the lead track from their debut album, Boys and Girls, was not just a No. 1 track for the week, according to IRC listeners, but an indie hit song of the summer. For the week of April 17th, the relatively unknown indie band Absolute Monarchs’ hot single, “Attack,” rocketed ahead of all the other new album tracks of the week to secure the No. 1 spot. What better way to end the month of April than with a No. 1 song from Jack White‘s debut solo album, Blunderbuss. Interestingly, there were a few of singles from the album that did well, and in this case, the listeners streamed, liked and downloaded the gritty rocker, “Freedom of 21,” with its blazing guitars and aggressive rhythms, the most.

May 2012

The No. 1 songs for the month of May started with a surprise number one track from Ane Brun, “Do You Remember,” featuring the artist First Aid Kit. It wasn’t a surprise in that it’s not a worthy song – it’s a solidly good track – but compared to the competition for the week, it was interesting how the results came out. To see, and listen to, the complete Top 10 Songs playlists for any No.1 song, just click on the date links. For the second week of May, the popular band Here We Go Magic has built a loyal following over the past few years with their unique, stand out style of infectious indie pop, as demonstrated on the single, “How Do I Know?,” and one of the top tracks on IRC all summer long (for more, see our Summer Mixtapes series). The second week of May delivered a number of anticipated new releases, including a dual between Beach House and Best Coast, but Beach Houses’ amazing single, “Myth,” beat out Best Coast’s “The Only Place” for the No. 1 spot. To wrap up the month, a band that we named a band to watch a couple of years ago, Hallelujah The Hills, took the No. 1 spot for the last week of May with their track, “Get Me in a Room” from the excellent album, No One Knows What Happens Next.

“Do You Remember (feat. First Aid Kit) – Ane Brun from It All Starts With One on America – listen to the full Top 10 Songs for the week of May 1st to May 7th

June 2012

As with the first installment of the Best Songs of 2012, according to IRC listeners, this second volume is kicking some serious ass as well. By the time June rolls around, people are into full-on music mode – making summer playlists, going to concerts, listening to tunes on the beach or out jogging and so on. There was not a lack of great songs for summer mixtapes (the whole site is one gigantic repository of spectacular playlists). The No. 1 song for the first week of June was one of the best songs of the summer – Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros’ “Man On Fire,” which beat out new singles from Regina Spektor, The Walkmen and Sigur Ros for the top new single of the week. For the first full week of June, Vancouver garage rock duo, Japandroids, topped the Top 10 Songs with the No. 1 song, “The House That Heaven Built,” from the fantastic album, Celebration Rock (look out for a full review in the Best Albums of 2012 series that will be published in installments).

The following week, Metric‘s new single, “Youth Without Youth,” easily secured the No. 1 spot (week of June 12th), out of many great singles from Vol. One and Vol. Two of that week’s top albums. Next, the track “We Should Be Swimming” from London break-through band Zulu Winter‘s debut album, Language beat out the competition for the No. 1, according to listeners. Language contains a number of other standout tracks, such as “Silver Tongue” and “Key To My Heart.” The last week of June and the first couple of days of July intertwine in Best New Music Releases (Vol. I and Vol. II) for the week of June 26th, topped by a band hardly anyone has heard of – Seventeen Evergreen – grabbing the No. 1 spot based on what listeners streamed and downloaded the most from the week’s top album singles. Seventeen Evergreen, a San Francisco electronic/psychedelic rock duo, beat out bands like The Henry Clay People, Beachwood Sparks and the Ty Segall Band.

Top Ten Songs, Sept. 2012 – The Raveonettes, The xx, Firewater, David Bryne & St. Vincent, Sea Wolf, Mumford & Sons

The Raveonettes‘ newest single, “She Owns The Streets,” was by far the most played and downloaded track on IRC in September, trailed by the second most popular song of the month,  “Angels” by The xx. Other top singles of the month, in order, were the swaggering horn-laced romp ,”A Little Revolution,” by Firewater; the sassy duet, “Who,” from David Bryne and St. Vincent; the richly melodic “Old Friend” by Sea Wolf as well as the latest tracks, in order – top down from Stars, The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Band of Horses, and Django Django.

All tracks for the Top 10 Songs of the Month were first posted in the Best New Releases playlist mixes for the weeks of Sept. 4th and Sept. 11th (and Vol. II); Sept. 18th and Sept. 25th (click the links to view each week’s top singles from albums officially dropped that week) or a Fresh Tracks playlist.

There are dozens and dozens of spectacular songs in the Fresh Tracks series, as well as the Best New Releases from September.  While this playlist features the Top 10 Songs of September – determined how many times IRC listeners stream and download a song – in the works are the week-by-week Top 10 Songs playlists which contain so many prime singles from the last month of summer.  It takes time to put them together because we have to go through all the web logs to find out which songs were streamed and downloaded the most.

Best Indie Rock Songs of 2010, Vol. IV – Dead Weather, Foals, The Radio Dept., Beach Fossils, Weekend, The National

thedeadweather
The Dead Weather's 'Sea Cowards,' was one of the best rocker albums of 2010

Enough with 2010 already? If that’s how you feel, then you probably don’t want to listen to 30-plus more of our favorite indie rock songs of 2010. By natural extension, many of the songs featured in this series are on many of our favorite albums for 2010. So, in place of the weekly S-25 Mix, we’ve put together this playlist of some of our favorite 2010 tracks to share with you instead.

It’s now mid-February, and there have been oodles of ace songs released so far, mainly via the Best New Releases weekly series, and the regular Fresh Tracks spotlight, including the latest and best music from bands like The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Drive By Truckers, Smith Westerns, The Strokes, Radiohead, and many others.  And so while we do our best to keep you updated on the latest most popular releases from indie bands and artists, we’re also continuing to share our favorite music of 2010, from albums and songs, to well-known artists and new bands.

“The Difference Between Us”Dead Weather from Sea of Cowards

“Cigarettes in the Theatre”Two Door Cinema Club from Tourist History

In addition to creating various mixes featuring our favorite songs of 2010, work continues on putting together IRC’s Best Albums of 2010. So why the wait? Well, one reason is to make sure we have listened to as many indie albums from 2010 as possible, and with perspective. Another reason is so that we can measure your favorite albums based on what songs from this series are listened to, ‘hearted’ (on our Hype page), and downloaded the most.

With that in mind, you don’t want to miss the first three volumes of Best Indie Rock Songs of 2010 because there are more than 100 killer tracks; so far, this series has been the most popular playlist series of 2011.  Also, don’t miss the Top Ten Breakout Bands of 2010, plus 50 No. 1 Songs of 2010; and check out the first installment of 5 Bands to Watch in 2011. Don’t miss Vol One of the Best Indie Rock Songs of 2010

Brooklyn based resident CMJ producer Sane Smith drops new album entitled
“Robots Will Kill”, featuring funky electronic dance groove samples and old
school raps interlaced with ambient synths and driving beats, then further
spliced and glitched with the help of a monome and recorded live (riyl:
RJD2, DJ Shadow, Pretty Lights).

Best Indie Rock Songs 2010, Vol. I: Deerhunter, Freelance Whales, Broken Bells, Arcade Fire, Fang Island, The Walkmen, Caribou

Deerhunter's 'Halcyon Digest' LP was one of the best albums of 2010

In the end, 2010 turned out to be another blockbuster year for indie rock (and its many related and sub genres) music. So much so that many people, including us, are still catching up, digesting, listening to, and analyzing 2010 releases. We don’t feel any necessity to follow the packs and get out best-of, year-end list by a certain date, but generally, we like to get the majority of it wrapped up no later than Valentines Day, or about the time that the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco starts – in the third week of February. Therefore, as many of you have probably already noticed, there are lots of ‘best of’ and ‘top 2010’ band playlists and polls that have been running, and now it’s time to focus on songs.

So far, we’ve published the Top 50 No.1 Songs of 2010 of the songs featured on IRC throughout the year, which were tallied each week via the popular Top Ten Songs listings.

“Helicopter”Deerhunter from Halcyon Digest

The same concept will continue in 2011, wherein we tally the songs that were listened to, and downloaded, the most the week previous, and then we list the Top Ten Songs for that week based solely on whichever songs we posted during that week – such as the Best New Releases weekly series, and other common posts to provide readers and visitors a reliable place to go every week, or a few times a week, to find, stream and download the best new indie rock music, get cool deals and interesting news, view artist and band profiles, stream special playlists and mixes full of carefully chosen tracks, and find terrific, but rare new releases that are often times no where else on the web.

“The Suburbs” Arcade Fire from The Suburbs

We hope that you find this first volume of our top songs of 2010 enjoyable, and that perhaps you will discover some songs that you really dig but had never heard before.  As much as possible, we have avoided duplicating songs that are currently featured in the popular post, The Top 50 No. 1 Songs of 2010 playlist and poll. and hopefully, you voted for your favorite song. Because the No. 1 song of the week for the weekly Top Ten Songs list means that hundreds of other great 2010 songs were not included in that poll.

“Hannah” Freelance Whales from Weathervanes

Stayed tuned also for our Best Albums of 2010 series. Yeah, we know, everyone else has already put out their top albums of 2010. We don’t think that means we should put out ours at the same time as everyone else. Plus, it takes time to put such lists together – especially since there were so many amazing releases in 2010, from Arcade Fire and Broken Bells to Deerhunter and Fang Island. Another reason we wait to put out a Best Albums of 2010 list until January, is that we think it’s a bit pretentious to be releasing best of lists before the end of the year.

In the meantime, enjoy the best songs of 2010.

“The High Road” – Broken Bells from Broken Bells

Over the next few weeks, we’ll analyze the number of times the songs in these playlist have been streamed, downloaded, and “favorited”. Sometime later this month, we’ll collect those statistics for our top songs of 2010, and then publish a final list that will be separate from the No. 1 Songs playlist/poll. Hopefully, we’re not confusing you.  The bottom line is that we love the fact that our regular visitors and new visitors help determine what are the most popular songs of those that we post on IRC.

It will be very interesting to see which songs all you guys like the most. We also encourage you to leave comments about; it only takes a few people to start the ball rolling on interesting comment threads about the songs in this special post. The songs are not in any particular order of importance.

Note: This songs are not in order of importance; they are random. Also, many of the albums that these songs appear on are among the Best Albums of 2010. Even better, many are on sale from Amazon for $5, just click on the album title to order.

In this list, the main difference between the IRC Readers’ Choice Poll for the No. 1 song (out of 50 No.1’s through the year) and our choices for Best Indie Rock Songs of 2010 is that here we are not including any of the No. 1 songs from the Top Ten Songs weekly feature. Obviously, one is the readers’ choice, and the other (this one) is our choice for top songs that didn’t place No. 1 for one reason or another. The purpose of this poll/playlist is to segregate the all of the non-No. 1 songs of 2010, and instead use the songs that appeared in the No. 2 – No. 10 positions throughout the year.

Note 1: This album was originally released in October of 2009, but didn’t really hit popularity until early 2010; therefore, we’re making an exception for an exceptional album.

Late To The Gate: 2009 Indie Rock Releases from Patrick Watson, Viva Voce and White Rabbits

The intoxicating indie pop release Wooden Arms, by Canadian band Patrick Watson will likely be a contender for one of the best releases of 2009. The band’s 2006 release, Close To Paradise, was awarded the 2007 Polaris Music Prize (Canada’s Mercury Prize) and the band was nominated for Juno Award in 2007 for Best New Artist.

Sculpting songs that range from carnival-sounding track “Traveling Salesman” to the haunting transitions of “Where The Wild Things Are”, Patrick Watson demonstrate a sophistication in musical arrangements that give their sound a deeper, almost seductive sound as demonstrated on the title track “Wooden Arms” and the opening song “Fireweed”. The band also create songs that appeal to a larger, pop tune-loving audience. To that end, catchy songs such as “Man Like You” and “Big Bird In A Small Cage” fit the bill perfectly. Band members in addition to Watson include guitarist Simon Angell, bassist Mishka Stein and percussionist Robbie Kuster.

Portland’s Viva Voce‘s newest album, Rose City, reportedly written and recorded in less than a month, is a welcome departure from 2006’s applauded Get Yr Blood Sucked Out. On Rose City, original band members and husband-and-wife team Kevin and Anita Robinson recruited new members to provide a fuller, more engaging sound. And it worked – very well.

Besides Viva Voce being one of the best underrated female vocalist bands in recent years, Rose City is, for the most part, one of 2009’s overlooked album jems – surprising because it is a wonderful record featuring an array of well-crafted dark tracks like the alt rock of “Devotion”, the pleasant harmonies of “Octavio” or the spacey and lovely melodies of “Midnight Sun”.

“Octavio”Viva Voce from Rose City (2009)
“Devotion”Viva Voce from Rose City (2009)

Other popular indie husband-and-wife bands include Low, Yo La Tengo, Mates of State, White Stripes and Quasi.

White Rabbits 2009 release It’s Frightening is anything but scary; instead, the album is full of catchy, melodic songs wrapped in a rich array of instruments, including piano, tambourine, percussion, mandolin and guitars. While It’s Frightening could be forgotten once the best indie albums of the year lists come out in a few months, there are definitely some stand-out tracks worth checking out, such as “Percussion Gun”, “Right Where They Left”, “Company I Keep” and “They Done Wrong/ We Done Wrong”.

Looking Back AtThe Classic Solo Album Person Pitch by Panda Bear

Album cover of Panda Bear’s 2008 Person Pitch

One 2007 release that cannot be emphasized enough is the last release from Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox. As one of the many characters that make up the wildly popular psychedelic pop rock outfit, Lennox, better known by his moniker Panda Bear, released his third solo album last year. The more I listen to it – even now – the more it becomes apparent just what an awesome release it was.

Combining the high chorus, echo pop sounds of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys with his own brand of songs lush with sampling and electro-pop influences, a significant departure from Lennox’s previous acoustic-centric release Young Prayer.

His record label, Paw-Tracks Records, wrote of Lennox’s debut release: “Person Pitch is suffused with the kind of feel good modern toe-tapping pop that seems harder and harder to find these days.” Indeed.

“Comfy in Nautica” Panda Bear from Person Pitch

For those of you who missed it, here’s an amazing remix from Panda Bear of a great Notwist song. Enjoy.
