Frightened Rabbit’s New CD ‘The Midnight Organ Fight’ Slated for April 29th Release

Since their formation in 2004, and a widely applauded debut album and series of performances at the South by Southwest festival, Glasgow, Scotland’s indie pop band Frightened Rabbit has emerged in greater frequency on music websites and blogs in the past few months, largely based on their new sophomore release The Midnight Organ Fight.

Canadians Protest CBC Radio 2’s Cut in Classical Music Programming

The Canadian Broadcast Company’s disbandment of its classical music division and traveling orchestra series last month has produced outrage from Canadians across the country.

Yesterday, in eight cities throughout Canada, including Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver, protesters demonstrated outside CBC offices.

The CBC’s reaction: “We have a mandate as a national public broadcaster … to represent the musical diversity and creativity in the country, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Classical, yes, but other kinds of music as well.” [Full article].

John Terauds, a classical music critic, wrote to the Toronto Star, essentially agreeing with the CBC’s decision in the interest of ‘indie pop and rock’:

Wouldn’t it be nice if our portal truly reflected the country – so our rich and ever-regenerating indie pop and rock artists and burgeoning world and world-fusion musicians can get equal airtime (and bandwidth) with the venerable Toronto and Montreal symphony orchestras?That’s where Radio 2 is going – while still guaranteeing listeners several hours of classical programming every day. We should be proud – not angry – that the CBC is willing to take this kind of risk.

But Sara Davis Buechner, concert pianist and assistant processor of piano at University of British Columbia, strongly disagrees with Terauds, writing in the Vancouver Sun:

Anthony Tommasini has written some excellent columns recently in the New York Times about the astonishing interest in classical music being shown by young people through hits on the Internet, downloads, in Facebook groups and the like, on YouTube and Naxos, etc.

Classical music…is hotter than ever and our halls are filled with young people eager to challenge their ears and imagination. They want more and better, not less and worse. How is chucking one of the best new music groups in the country serving them?

Commercial stations exist aplenty full of indie rock and pop. The CBC need not compete with them. CBC-2 is not a moldy blanket. It’s a public trust with an obligation to the cultural history of the Nation of Canada.

Personally, what I didn’t find in reading about the CBC’s disbanding of the orchestra series is any mention that one of Canada’s most popular music groups ever, Arcade Fire, helped bring attention to classical instruments by regularly incorporating strings in their music, both in the studio and in concert.Here’s the full version of the one of Arcade Fire’s song that made string instruments ‘cool’ with many fans and had a ripple effect (Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend, The Ramonovs, etc.) – that may or may not be a trend.

Featured on the release of the string tribute quartet covers from Vitamin Records is Arcade Fire’s Neighbourhoods [audio clip] and Death Cab for Cutie [audio clip].

All said, the demise of classical music anywhere cannot be a good thing because classical music is the basis for all modern popular music.

So, in conclusion, while the CBC may have decided to axe a huge chunk of classical programming in the interests of appealing to a younger generation that wants indie and alternative pop and rock music, I don’t think classical music will vanish, but this is just another example of the attrition classical music has had with the ‘masses’ for decades.

Portishead’s New Video MP3 "Machine Gun" To Hype First Release in a Decade

Few bands in today’s highly competitive and saturated music market can remain popular without having new material for fans on a regular basis.

But veteran indie electronic rockers Portishead have managed to overcome those odds for nearly a decade.

On April 28th, Portishead will release their first original collection of new material since 1997’s self-titled ‘trip hop’ classic, which propelled the band to celestial heights, and kept them going for years, thanks in large part to a loyal fan base and numerous performances at big music festivals over the last few years.

The new album, Third, (which may refer to the fact that this is only their third album since 1994’s classic Dummy) has been kept under tight wraps in hopes of preventing a leak, but just to make sure they don’t miss having some control over the “blogger buzz” that is so important nowadays, the band has just released their new video called “Machine Gun.”

2008 PLUG Awards Go To Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Iron & Wine and Justice

The above promo video for the 2008 Plug Awards held at Terminal 5 in New York City on Friday night was produced by Dell Lounge, a website that broadcast the award ceremonies live.

The Triangle’s Mid-January Indie Rock Shows Low-Down; Save Your Money?

There are always plenty of shows to see in Durham-Raleigh-Chapel Hill, North Carolina area, commonly called “The Triangle.”

Upcoming performances include shows from Eberhardt, Butane Variations, Leon Russell, Lotus, Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Yeasayer.

Despite their relative popularity right now in the ‘underground’ music world, Tri-Cities music critic Grayson Currin isn’t expecting much from Yeasayer (who made many best indie songs of 2007 blog lists with the release of All Hour Cymbals):

Sonically, Yeasayer isn’t far removed from the Technicolor melodic phases of TV on the Radio or the hard rhythm-versus-smeared sound technique of Animal Collective, but its apocalyptic images emerge from its sonic mess without much punch.

And if that wasn’t enough, the tell-it-like-it-is (TILIS), Yeasayer-naysayer Currin also slams the venue owners of MGMT @ Local 506 for booking Yeasayer:

New York nothings with major-label moneys who fall in the same why-does-this-matter genus. Chapel Hill’s Soft Company is the better band on the bill

Currin has the raw wit and unapologetic sting of a good music critic, especially considering there is so much music available nowadays.

In the same set of pre-show reviews, Currin also dismissed aging alternative ‘rockers’ Big Head Todd and The Monsters with a grapefruit-sized slingshot to the head, attacking the band members’ lack of progress as musicians over the last two decades by reverting to “overly cared-for guitars and recycled riffs,” adding that “one can only hope” that the band’s upcoming release, All the Love You Need, is “more inventive.” Currin, surprisingly, isn’t optimistic: “Your odds would be better if you’d just learn poker

Currin’s less-than-positive critiques surely piss-off some of the artists, labels and local venue managers, but if it saves a college student from wasting $20 or more on a show, he’s doing his job in more ways than just one.

And so do the other writers of the staff, who also need to be recognized for keeping a pulse on the local scene. On an up note, Currin does like Butane Variations, deeming it as a “great band with a bright future.”

Daft Punk’s Sci-Fi Indie Film "Electroma" London Screening Next Week; New "Alive" Release

LONDON – Techno music trail blazers Daft Punk released their new album Alive this week, but the collection of live performances is being overshadowed in London by the buzz surrounding a special cinematic screening of the duo’s Electroma, a strangely beautiful sci-fi styled film.

The two main characters, played by Peter Hurteau and Michael Reich, are based ironically enough on the persona’s of Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

In the film, the duo set off on an odyssey to become human, roaming through gorgeous desert landscapes in a sports car on wide-open roads until they come upon a small town (filmed in Inyo County, California) inhabited by a close-knit community of proud robots.

When the ‘townspeople’ discover that their new residents true intention is to acquire latex (yup, latex) faces in a desperate move to humanize themselves, the locals turn on the pair, and things start to get weird. There’s not much action, but the film does seem to captivate the viewer through visual effects.

Electroma, the same name of Daft Punk’s latest worldwide tour, spans an array of film genres but also may have very well created their own genre in an age when technology is expanding our concepts of what film art is and can be.

Surely the film is not going to open in theatres across the U.K., Europe or the U.S., but Electroma is very different, and definitely could turn out to be a cult classic in a decade from now, although it is more likely to fade away as an interesting experiment that does not have a ‘mass’ appeal.

Nevertheless, Electroma is entertaining, a psychedelic cinematic delight, and an accomplished one considering that the tripmasters of techno dance shot the movie with no professional training in film-making.

In fact, in preparation for the filming, Bangalter ordered and read some 200 back issues of American Cinematography and insisted the film be shot on Kodak 35mm stock film.

However dazzling the pictures are, it is not the traditional full cinematic experience film-goers would expect, and for die-hard Daft Punk fans, there is disappointment on two fronts concerning decisions made during the planning and production of the film.

First, and baffling to many when it was first revealed, there is not one note of music in Electroma by Daft Punk.

Huh? Yup, it’s true.

If you listen real closely, or just search around the web, what you can hear is plenty of discontent from fans, but listen more closely and you might hear a lot more of head scratching; simply put, why wouldn’t they use their own music?

Perhaps one explanation is that they did not want to detract from their film work. There is probably also a good chance that in doing so they would miss a major revenue stream by selling a new music on a separate album release rather than add it to a movie where it would also be judged differently by critics.

It is not by mistake that Daft Punk has established itself in dance clubs and raves around the world as one of the most prolific innovators of electronica experimentation.

Secondly, if you like your movies with characters who talk – like actual dialogue – forget it – there is no dialogue in Electroma, which makes the movie more interesting, but it’s a risky move.

Apparently, it’s a risk Daft Punk was willing to take, and for the most part, critics and fans who have seen the film seem to think the guys pulled it off.

But still, the question will not go away:

Why wouldn’t Daft Punk release a film they wrote, directed and produced and not put any of their own music in it?!

Well, as you can imagine, rumors are all over the place as to why Daft Punk’s music isn’t featured in the film, but really, who cares?

Moreover, a smart bet would say that it was a deliberate decision – and a wise one at that – to not include any of Daft Punk’s own music in the film.

Doing so would detract from the focus – which in this case is the film-making, not their music.

Stereophonics Return With No.1 Album in U.K.; Music Videos, MP3s,Tour Schedule

The Stereophonics first full length album in two years – Pull The Pin – was released Monday (Oct. 15) to over-whelming critical acclaim, intense radio play and appreciative fans, boosting the album to the top of the U.K. album charts in less than 48 hours.

The promotional efforts leading up to the launch of the band’s sixth studio album included the advanced release of the melodic hit single and music video “It Means Nothing”, plus the title track, from this summer’s online only Bank Holiday Monday EP [see videos links below].

On October 29, The Stereophonics will kick-off a one-month, 21-show concert tour of the U.K. and Europe through the end of November. (this page will be frequently updated, or you can sign-up for the free Feed Me Indie mailing list)

The Stereophonics: Keeping It Real; Hope It Sticks

The Stereophonics sold out many show on their previous tours of America, but the band failed to gain the momentum other bands like Oasis have due largely to the failure of radio disc jockeys and MTV to play their music.

The trio, made up of Kelly Jones, Richard Jones (no relation) and Stuart Cable, grew up as friends in the south Wales down of Cwmaman.


The blokes can write and perform great rock/pop songs – that’s been established. In fact, The Stereophonics are arguably one of the most solid indie rock bands of the past decade, but as with so many artists featured here on IRC, they simply do not get the level of attention and “fame” they deserve.

For many fans, that’s a good thing, but the shame is that so many people are otherwise missing out on hearing great music.

There’s no question that indie rock artists – such as Muse, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, The Pixies, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, and so on – transcend the normally cloaked world of indie music and ascend to a new level of popularity.

The Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire were propelled into a new dimension of stardom last summer when they appeared on the cover of Time magazine.

So far, it hasn’t destroyed them. So far. In fact, with the growing popularity of indie rock around the world, many independent artists are now becoming, um, should I say, ‘mainstream’? (Ekk!)

But for now, Stereophonics are not a household name in the U.S. and it doesn’t help that the band does not have any known plans for an upcoming tour of North America. While some fans are bummed that “The Stereophonic Express” won’t make its way to the Western Hemisphere, others find comfort in the band’s low profile.

There are always die-hard fans who grimace at any major press given to their favorite artists – for those fans, it disturbs their sense of closeness to the group and of course makes them worried about the band becoming well polished by corporate executives and 700-page contracts.

I have a feeling the guys with stay with V2 Records (who’s line-up also features Peter Bjorn and John, Ray Davies (The Kinks), like a death sentence. Stereophonics are not new on the indie rock scene – the leather-strapping lads from the U.K. have been belting out melodic rock and pop for the past decade, but their main fan base is in the U.K. and Europe.

Beavis and Butthead Creator Reveals Animated Short Film of "Office Space"

Educadorian born and American raised animator Mike Judge, best known as the creator of MTV’s wildly popular 90’s show “Beavis and Butthead,” is easily one of the most talented and successful animators in American popular culture history.

Judge, also a writer, actor, voice actor, animator and producer, among other things, created an animated short of “Office Space” in 2000 that looks and feels alot like a spin-off of “Beavis and Butthead”; if nothing else, Judge’s signature style is clearly evident in this short film.

Ultimately, the short inspired Judge to write and direct the cult classic, full-featured film “Office Space” – a movie that unearths the daily drudgery’s of the office – paper work and forms, prick bosses who eog-trip off others’ vulnerabilities, malfunctioning printers and copy machines, stale coffee and disgruntled employees who are literally driven to crime.

Update: Some how, someone just took the animated short off of YouTube a few minutes ago. Was it because of this post? I am looking for another version of the original short, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out Judge’s animated short for “Inbred Jed” – awesome!

Milton gets his ultimate revenge in the end, not just for himself, but for millions of other office workers who can relate.

The animated short here, clearly similar to Bevis and Butthead, shows Milton talking about his treasured stapler and what will happen if it is taken away from him again.
