In Dee Mail: New Stuff from Chelan, Bojibian and The Very Most

Cover art for new release, Summer Machines, by Chelan
We get so much music mailed and emailed to us that it is impossible to keep up with it all.

So, with that, lets kick-off yet another playlist series, this time focused exclusively on talented, often unsigned, independent musicians who send us music In Dee Mail.

During the past few weeks IRC made it’s own little indie news on the web by featuring two unsigned artists who now have indie record labels calling them. And for damn good reasons!

First up, Blind Man’s Colour. Although IRC was not the first indie blog to feature the electro pop duo from Florida, it’s safe to say that our featured sparked a good deal of interest in the band after tagging them as a ‘Band to Watch in 2009’.

So much so that Kanye West himself placed a link on his blog to our story. Last word from Blind Man’s Colour is that they have been getting calls from record labels. Check back soon for a follow-up profile of these promising young artists.

Similarly, this week we featured Artist of the Month Indiana college student Joseph Denney – who goes by the moniker Spirit Spine.

He contacted IRC the other day to say that a record label called him after seeing his profile on IRC and listening to some of his songs. Many visitors to the site have been listening to Spirit Spine’s songs since the Monday posting. You can be sure we’ll be following up with Denney in the coming weeks.

Now, let’s move on and give some well deserved exposure to some other great indie artists and bands that have sent us music recently.

Chelan is the musical project of Justin Hosford and Jennifer Grady who have a decade long collaboration under their belts. While they recently parted ways to pursue other artistic adventures, the duo continued to work on Chelan.

If you would like to submit your own music for consideration, send an email to contact@indierockcafe.com/indierockcafe or to POB 722 Redwood Estates, CA 95044.

You will then receive a verification email that will tell you exactly what you need to do to submit music to IRC. Because we get SO much music, we can only review music that follows the submission guidelines.

September Indie Rock New Releases

There is no shortage of exciting indie releases this September and the stack is already growing high for October.

Among the most talked about, and triumphant indie releases this September is Austin’s indie sensations Okkervil River’s

Rock critic Will Sheff called The Stand Ins and its 2007 counterpart The Stage Names “essentially a fat-free double album. They’re also striking in-progress documents of a band that continues to sharpen its bookish but brutally honest indie rock with every disc.”

Other artists and bands releasing new work this month include The Broken West, Kings of Leon, Woodlands, I Heart Hiroshama, Broadfield Marchers and Mason Proper, among many others. (Check back as this page will be updated as new music arrives).

“Auctioneer” by Broken West from the forthcoming album Now or Heaven, released on September 9, 2008 via Merge Records.

MP3: “I Wasn’t Made For Fighting” by Woodlands from their album Heart Attack on Paper Bag Records. This is a great song for those of you who enjoy trip-hop trance mixed with rock-like interludes and vocals.

New Indie Rock Songs, July 2008: Conor Oberst, iForward, Russia!, Hot Little Hands, Cold War Kids and Others

The long-awaited solo album from Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes is set to be released on August 5, 2008.

The release will mark the talented Oberst’s first solo project, and because of the success of Bright Eyes in recent years, there are rather big expectations, which can often be unfair to the artist.

But that’s just one of many ironies that can happen to musicians who create a buzz with a band and then go solo.

mp3: “danny callahan” by conor oberst from his self-titled debut album

mp3: “spring is a condition” by iforward, russia! from the new CD life processes

mp3: “pink squares” by i was a cub scout from the new release i want you to know that there is always hope

mp3: “footloose” by thomas bartlett off the album doveman footloose

mp3: “scene of the crime” (download only) by hot little hands from the disc dynamite in black and white

advance mp3: “soloist in the living room” by cold war kids from forthcoming yet-to-be-named album (date of release unknown, but rumored for august)

mp3: “i kissed a girl (katy perry)” by false start from self-titled debut

note: some mp3s expire or are removed and become no longer available over a period of time; irc has no control over this since they are external media files. we also fully support indie artists and ask that you do too.

Late to the Gate: Indie Rock Songs of 2008

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones once sang “time waits for no one.” Man, is that true. There have been so many indie rock releases so far in 2008 that’s it’s nearly impossible to keep up with it all.

Therefore, the following, free, legal MP3s feature some of this year’s most popular new releases, including Nine Inch Nails, The Ruby Suns, The Helio Sequence, Band of Horses, The Gutter Twins and many others.

There’s always too many indie rock articles and items of news and never enough time to write about them. So, as an antidote, IRC has come up with the ‘linkstorm’ concept to deliver to you the best in what’s happening in the indie music world. Enjoy.

Akron, Ohio’s The Black Keys cover 70’s icon Captain Beefheart in the song “I’m Glad” (via Stereogum). Get the MP3 while you can because it could expire at any time.

The El Paso band Sleepercar mixes Americana jingle-laden pop with swirls of alternative folk on their debut album West Texas. Jim Ward, a musician well-heeled in the indie music world for his work with At The Drive-In or Sparta, spent six years working on this album. “Even if you are a bit wary about the whole “Americana” tag, this album is worthy of your attention and may even help expand your musical horizons” says music writer Rich Duncan.

Favorite or "Best" Songs of 2007, Playlist II

The focus of this series remains fixed on talented, original and under-rated independent music, especially that which rises to the level of the famous blogger buzz.

However, there are some entries in this series that feature mainstream artists. Nevertheless, they are often not artists that are not household names, and I’m always good with that. I guess the best artists fail when they ‘sign over’, like Taking Back Sunday and The Decemberists.

IRC’s own ‘Favorite Indie and Alternative Songs of 2007’ series includes songs that are not found on many site’s lists of lists for best music of 2007 (to be published later) low).

However, there is no ranking of songs. That’s up to all of you, who are best critics. There are definitely songs from 2007 that I haven’t heard that would otherwise be on published on IRC’s ‘best songs of 2007’ playlists.

IRC’s Favorite Songs of 2007 – Playlist Two

I’m Home – Starlet

It Ends Tonight – All American Rejects

7 Stars – Apples in Stereo

Milk – Magpie

Spitting Venom – Modest Mouse

DdiamondD – Panda Bear

Powerlines – Western States of Motel

Arctic Monkey’s Newest Video, Upcoming DVD of Manchester Show and Rare Booklet of the Band

Arctic Monkeys, riding high on the success of their latest album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and their new single “Teddy Picker” (video below), are resting up following a nearly non-stop touring schedule in 2007.

Last month, the band launched a 11-day, seven-show sold-out concert tour of the U.K. and the Netherlands. The tour extended from Dec. 4 to Dec. 15 with the final show of 2007 performed at Manchester’s Apollo Theatre.

For hard-core fans, you may be interested to know that Warped Films – which has produced some wildly successful British film since 2003, including Dead Man’s Shoes and This is England – was at the Apollo filming the show. The “theatrical” DVD special is expected to be released in the spring.

Warped also filmed Arctic Monkey’s short film Scummy Man.

By the way, after much searching, I was able to get my hands on an exclusive and rare print (handed out at the shows in December) of the Arctic Monkey’s “Christmas special” with Big Issue magazine.

The spread includes many photos of the usually shy band members and an extensive article.

“Teddy Picker” video – released Dec. 31, 2007

Teddy Picker Lyrics

They’ve sped up to the point where they provoke
The punchline before they have told the joke
Plenty of desperation to be seen
Staring at the television screen

They’ve sped up to the point where they provoke
You to tell the f**king punchline before you have told the joke
Sorry sunshine it doesn’t exist
It wasn’t in the top 100 list

And it’s the thousandth time that it’s even bolder,
Don’t be surprised when you get bent over,
They told ya,but you were dying for it

She saw it and she grabbed it and it wasn’t what it seemed
The kids all dream of making it, whatever that means
Another variation on a theme
A tangle on the television and the magazine
D’you reckon that they do it for a joke?
D’you reckon that they make ’em take an oath?
That says “we are defenders
[Teddy Picker lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Of any poseur or professional pretender around”

When did your list replace the twist and turn
like a fist replaced a kiss, don’t concern us with your bollocks
I don’t want your prayers
Save it for the morning after

And it’s the thousandth time and it’s even bolder,
Don’t be surprised when you get bent over,
They told ya, but you were gagging for it

Lets have a game on the Teddy Picker
Not quick enough can I have it quicker?
Already thick and you’re getting thicker
Lets have a game on the Teddy Picker
Not quick enough can I have it quicker?
Already thick and you’re getting thicker

Assuming that all things are equal,
Who’d want to be men of the people
When there’s people like you?
