Tiny Kingdoms – “Tides”

The new song “Tides” is an energetic, melodic new indie rock single from the Chicago four-piece band Tiny Kingdoms.

The track features a memorable guitar hook and an ambitious chorus that drives the single forward with a rock and roll verve.

The accompanying music video is “an Alice in Wonderland type experience as the video follows the protagonist through a dreamlike adventure…the main character encounters a variety of odd characters as she travels through obstacles in an attempt to escape,” says drummer Jake Newling.

In addition to Newling, this promising band also includes guitarist and vocalist Nico Miura; bassist Nick Collis, and guitarist Ryan Mitchell.

The band thoughtfully balances various genres, such as rock and pop, to create a sound anchored by melodic guitar hooks, chugging percussions and robust, post-punk-style vocals. Their tracks are sonically robust and full of catchy harmonies.

Earlier this year, Tiny Kingdoms had a successful appearance at SXSW as an official artist after dropping the debut Stay.

They are influenced by, and fans of, artists such as Circa Survive, Taking Back Sunday, The Dangerous Summer, Everyone Leaves, among others.

Lightouts – “Lucky Strikes”

With band members living in various locales – Brooklyn, Austin, and even the Peruvian Amazon – of the western hemisphere, indie rock band Lightouts managed to write and record their first album in nearly five years via long-distance collaboration.

The release, titled Wake, has spawned the new single and accompanying video, “Lucky Strikes.”

To the dismay of fans, the band was on a bit of a hiatus.

“The greatest achievement on Wake, apart from the songs themselves,” explains guitarist and keyboardist Gavin Rhodes, “is making time seem to stand still,” Rhodes adds.

“Family commitments, geographic hurdles, vaporizing vocalists — all played a role in the unusually lengthy interval between Lightouts albums,” Rhodes says, adding: “day jobs, kid-raising, ayahuasca experiments, and shaman-searching to the mix.”

All of these things have informed the band’s latest work, something their fans have been waiting for since Lightouts debut E.P., More Than Ever, in 2015.

That recording was unusual, but exciting, by the very fact that ex-Dead Kennedy’s vocalist Skip Greer sang on the E.P. (DK fans take note)

In addition to Rhodes, the permanent band members include Greg Nelson (lead vocals, guitars); Dean Perry (bass guitars), and Josh Fleischmann (drums) first got together as an official band back in 2013.

That year’s debut release, Want, landed on a number of best of 2013 lists, and was also featured on IRC.

sture band

Sture – “Fabricated”

The powerful “Fabricated” is the first single from Seinäjoki, Finland indie rock band Sture’s upcoming debut album, Broken English.

The single was conceived at the last minute during a jam session. “We hit it perfectly and it fit nicely with our mood. We caught it using a cellphone,” according to Bohdan Holovan. Later, the band was able to use the moment captured live to construct a final version.

“While recording this song, we tried to create a simple, childish and naive sound without over-producing the track.”

Holovan said that he used a late 1980s Korean Stratocaster clone guitar and a “super cheap” Danelectro T-Bone distortion pedal plugged “into decent studio equipment.”

The album was recorded during the summer of 2018. At the same time, Holovan moved his family out of Ukraine to Finland. The other band members are in the process of moving to Finland, Holovan says.

Originally from Ukraine, the band started in 2016 as a “girl/boy duo” of drummer Katherine Martynova and guitarist and vocalist Bohdan Holovan.

The two met while attending the Ukrainian university in Zaporizhia, a “once-great industrial hometown.”

Sture’s debut single, “Elza Never Told You,” was released in July of 2017 followed a few months later by the single “Keyboard and Pillow.”

During this period, the duo transformed into a trio by bringing on bassist Maxim Fedoseiev.

For the past two years, Sture has been performing live shows and plan to continue to in Finland.

The band cites their biggest musical influences as The White Stripes, Blur, Oasis, The Stone Roses, and Pixies, all of which have informed their garage/indie rock and Britpop sound.

asherevergreen

Asher Evergreen – “Rejected”

The debut release from Brooklyn-born, Tulsa based, recording artist Asher Evergreen, “Rejected,” is an indelible number with a catchy modern pop sound full of powerful lyrics, delicate harmonies and of course, her strikingly husky soul vocals.

With her striking green hair, Evergreen catches people’s attention, but it’s really her music that gets noticed more than anything as soon as people hear it.

Her musical journey from humble musical beginnings up to now, with her own compelling debut release and a new single, has been one of perseverance and pure love for music.

Moving around a lot as a youngster she learned to substitute enduring friendships with music, turning to her songwriting and spoken word while developing a keen talent, and unique style, as a pianist and vocalist, as well as her unique style.

The green hair is just a small part of Evergreen’s personal identity. She aims “to bring positivity and ‘greenness’, the color of life, to people everywhere,” she says.

“It’s not just about entertaining the crowd to me, it’s about bringing them into my world, and visiting theirs.”

She certainly has made a mark with her breakout into the brave world of being noticed for her natural and acquired talents.

tenyear

The Ten Year Program – “Ambient Wet Dreams”

Philadelphia indie rock project The Ten Year Program was brought to fruition by two longtime friends and musical partners.

Multi-instrumentalist Ian Richards (guitar, bass, drums, synth) produced, engineered, wrote, and recorded the music while vocalist Jack McCracken carries the vocal duties.

The band’s single, “Ambient Wet Dreams,” has actually been out for a bit, but we like it so much that we added it to this playlist. The song starts with a wall of guitars.

The use of pedal tones effectively adds to the urgency of the work. The rhythms are clever, at times intricate, utilizing hemiola to create the illusion of competing time signatures. No one element detracts from the whole.

The duo has a wide range of musical influences, including bands like Glassjaw, Deftones, Sunny Day Real Estate, Deftones, Glassjaw, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Eat World, and Green Day.

Sarah Sunday – “Mental Zoo”

Calling her music ‘Europop Revival’ East Brunswick, New Jersey alternative pop musician Sarah Sunday has just released the audio and music video for her newest single, “Mental Zoo.”

The single has a strong playful edge with notable vocal hooks, pulsating downbeats and a tempo that flows evenly with a vein of pop and punk.

The sound and style of Europop and new wave that burned up the airwaves in the 1980s is alive again through Sunday’s embracing of retro vibe revival through channeling of pop and rock genres of the era, from post-punk to pop.

retains the same anthemically euphoric edge of your more conservative EDM Pop hits. Sunday verses the lyrics with an innocently playful vocal approach which gives the track an incredibly distinctive edge while doing nothing to compromise the accessibility of the single.

Sunday says her music is “inspired by a plethora of iconic female vocalists from Avril Lavigne to Debbie Harry.

A colorful character by her own words, Sunday also rides her fashionista verve wearing retro clothes and makeup with the angle towards punk rock. Yes, there are a lot of genres, but that is the nature and strength of indie rock.

November Indie Songs, Vol. II – Ten Minute Detour, Alex Floor, The Rope & Others

ten-minute-detour

This second indie songs playlist for November features artists and bands from across the U.S. and southern Ontario. Enjoy and please share to support DIY artists and bands.

Ten Minute Detour – Toronto, Ontario
Alex Floor – Western North Carolina
The Rope – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Summer Colds – Ashland, Oregon

Ten Minute Detour – “Bleeding Green”

The Toronto alternative rock band Ten Minute Detour cut their teeth in a small, detached, heatless garage in Calgary, Alberta.

Unlike the band’s previous singles, TMD’s new single, “Bleeding Green,” sports a more ambient-like guitar sound with smooth melodies, a chill beat and the impressive vocal work of guitarist Andrew Shier.

The accompanying video tears a page out of the old face-in-the-camera technique but switches it up a bit with green face paint sequences set to the track.

TMD’s fans will recognize that the song is a different and more sophisticated sound for the band; more mellow and emotive.

Since the band’s inception in 2016, their style has been raw garage rock with a rough and riffy classic rock sound, tube amps and wild vocals, backed by hard-hitting drums.

While their signature sound of the past was garage rock, Shier says many of the band’s songs were created using a “different recipe.”

Shortly after recording started, Shier, along with guitarist/vocalist Jordan MacNeil – the founder members – moved from their western prairie homeland in Alberta to Toronto, a city that has experienced a burgeoning indie music scene for years.

Unavoidably, the move also resulted in some of the Alberta-based band members’ departure from the band. That of course changed the band’s sound to what has surfaced here in 2019.

The band’s maturation as songwriters and musicians is notable and it will likely serve them well moving forward.

The other talented band members of Ten Minute Detour are keyboardist Matt Drake; drummer Kaol Porter, and bassist Jake Rowinski.

TMD’s sophomore album, Common Pleasure, was recorded “over a harrowing seven days” and serves as a testament to the band’s growth in songwriting and storytelling.

Producer and former Cage The Elephant guitarist, Lincoln Parish, was brought on to polish things off like a pro.

The band’s debut album, Lay It Down, was recorded in Alberta in 2015, featuring tracks like “Four Papers” and “Getaway,” two catchy alt. rock tracks that helped pave the way for the band, and lead to hundreds of live performances across the expansive country of Canada.

TMD’s biggest musical influences include Kings of Leon, Alabama Shakes, Arctic Monkeys, and Cage the Elephant.

Alex Floor – “Speed Up Or Slow Down”

During the day, North Carolinian indie musician Alex Floor writes code and manages computer networks.

But between work and parenting, he finds time to write, record, master, and produce provocative and thoughtful songs.

His newest single, “Speed Up or Slow Down,” was originally written a few years ago following a divorce. A co-worker and friend helped encourage him to record the track. And so he did.

The track starts with a treble-high programmed beat and the introduction to Floor’s soft vocals and sweet melodies.

The track, which uses minimal instrumentation, takes on his anti-folk vibe and yet the beautiful aspects of the sound do not tinge the melancholy that is clearly present. It’s a really nice touch and Floor pulls it off capably.

In fact, we encourage folks to take the time to listen to his other accomplished songs such as “Keeping Me Up” and “Now That You’re Gone.”

Floor grew up in the Midwest rustbelt, lived in Brooklyn for a decade and now resides in the mountains of western North Carolina with his wife, children, cats, and dog. You could say that gives him a unique cross-reference of America for songwriting and musical tastes.

His musical influences include, but are not limited to, artists and bands like Elliott Smith, The Shins, Vampire Weekend, The Decemberists, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Joshua Radin, Cary Brothers, Dan Costello, and Brian Speaker.

IRC first featured Floor’s early single, “Borrowed Earth,” from his self-released debut album, American Peasant, back in 2010. In 2012, he dropped a respectable follow-up E.P., Finding A Middle.

the rope

The Rope – “Now You Know”

Based in one of the Midwest’s music capitals, popular Minneapolis alternative post-punk band The Rope just recently dropped their debut long-play album, Lillian. The album has received strong support, including on The Rope’s Bandcamp page.

Spawned from Lillian have been a number of standout tracks, including the newest single, the dark, eclectic, guitar-driven track, “Now You Know.”

The album features a collection of ten tracks featuring the blending of gothic, post-punk, new wave, darkwave, and alternative rock with clear 1970s and 80s influences.

This past year the band has toured, performing at the UK’s Sacrosanct and Germany’s Gotham Sounds festivals.

The band members are founding member and vocalist Jesse Hagon; drummer Ben Rickel; guitarist Michael Browning, and bassist Sam Richardson (bass).

Initially formed in 2009, The Rope released their eponymous debut E.P. in 2011. After a series of line-up changes, the band returned in 2015 with their second EP, Waters Rising.

The Rope’s musical influences include The Cure, Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, My Life w/ the Thrill Kill Kult, and Sisters of Mercy.

Summer Colds – “Killing Flies”

The rising Ashland, Oregon indie rock trio Summer Colds return again with another track, “Killing Flies”, from their debut album.

The track opening with a snarly-style vocal delivery, a tepid background beat and a wall of guitars. Once the song opens up a bit more and really gets rolling, it’s a solid track.

However, the vocals could be better; they are understated like “dude, why you holding back?”

The growing pains of a new and young band. The guitar solo at the ending of the track is cool and how it merges with the other instruments.

Earlier this year, we featured the band’s debut single, “Whiteout,” which helped fuel the band’s visibility locally and online.

Soon we’ll be posting our review of the band’s debut album, Here Comes Nothing. Straddling between, and mixing, genres such as alt. rock, pop-punk, and power pop.

After recording two albums with his former band Black Bears Fire in 2013 & 2015, songwriter, songwriter, and vocalist Nic McNamara founded Summer Colds “to bring to life a heavier sound” than his previous folk-rock project.

He recruited drummer and vocalist Claire Burgess and bassist Nicole Swan to complete the band.

“Unlike many other songs on the album,” says McNamara, “this was written in its entirety a few months before the album was released.”

“It came in a flash of inspiration, triggered by running into an ex-girlfriend who had taken a self-destructive path.”

The song came together quicker than usual and ended up setting the standard for what the mixing and production of the rest of the tracks on the album would sound like.

Summer Colds has opened for a bunch of bands over the past five years, including Slow Corpse, Old Year, Calyx, The Juniper Berries, Yr Parents, and Glacierwolf.

The band’s biggest influences include Weezer, White Reaper, Surfer Blood, Pup, Brand New, and Wavves.

New Single “God Grant” from The Dead Heads is Out of This World

deadheadscover

The just-released single “God Grant” from Worcester, Massachusetts duo The Dead Heads is not the ordinary track we receive, or post, at IRC.

The song could briefly be described as a frenetic, zany electro-experimental rock track of another kind.

“It is a song about a superhuman being that dresses cool while battling minotaurs, pixies, wizards and demons. He has occasionally been seen riding on a giant goat.”

The track also has a video gamey-sound with cartoonish vocals, fast melodies and electronic drums that then turn to backward beats with a ‘boing’ effect from a Yahama PSS-480 keyboard.

The music was developed along with the lyrics, which involve mythology and fantasy references, like ‘cutting off the devil’s hoof’ or ‘walking the Grant Lagoon.’

“The song turned out to be a great representation of what The Dead Heads are all about…fun, high-energy songs with some weird (and sometimes dark) twists and turns,” says vocalist, keyboardist and drummer Groady Guss. Along with his partner, Animal Anderson (vocals, keys, guitars), they are the band.

Of course, the looming question cannot be ignored: why are they named The Dead Heads if they have nothing to do with The Grateful Dead or the band’s music?

The duo, friends since childhood, actually took the name as teenagers when they first started experimenting with recording.

Thus, they are not those Dead Heads. Actually, they just liked how it sounded and had more to do with the original meaning of a dead head from years ago before the musical group was even formed.

“When we were kids in the late 1980s,” Guss says, “we had a Casio SK-1 sampling keyboard, which we sometimes still use, and a boombox to record with.”

“We would make cassette albums for ourselves filled with goofy, weird songs and parodies,” he continues. “At this time we were influenced by The Dr. Demento Show. We started using the name Dead Heads and it stuck.”

During the 1980s, on radio stations across the U.S., the Dr. Demento Show was a popular underground hit. The D.J., Dr. Demento, played unusual, strange, odd, irreverent and nutty songs that would otherwise never make it on to a mainstream radio station.

Therefore it’s no great surprise that the duo’s influences include artists like Frank Zappa, They Might Be Giants, Weird Al, and Devo, among others.

“We record mostly with keyboards; old 80’s and 90’s Yamahas and Casios to give our music that intentionally cheesy, poppy flavor.”

They also run an Internet radio show that includes Professor Dud’s Castle that focuses on indie and DIY, just like we do.

Album Review: The Lionyls

Born in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa, the four member band, The Lionyls, belt out American-style blues, rock, funk, and soul into a sonic brew that is unique nowadays. They just dropped their new E.P., The Lionyls II.

The band has created their own branded organic sound, with infusions of musical elements that are timeless and modern, raw and refined, and transcend social and cultural barriers to connect with all kinds of music lovers.

The album showcases a new level of musical innovation, incorporating elements from afrobeat, jazz and hip hop seamlessly with their funk, soul, and rock and roll roots.

A good example of this is the high-energy single, “Keep On Moving,” from the E.P.

From start to finish, “Keep on Moving” fills the listener with energy and encourages them to keep progressing towards their goal no matter what difficulties they may face.

Other tracks like the more soul-inspired brassy grooves of “Pocket,” which also has a recent music video drop, plus the funky “Keep Tomorrow Alive” and a couple of cool interludes.

The message is simple yet powerful. It moves classic rock and other ‘older’ genres into the modern era. These young guys have a strong rock and roll verve that can also be heard on songs like the brass and rhythm-driven, “Trillion Dollar Man” and “Steppin Out” .

The song builds into a blistering guitar solo, atop a tasty Latin-esque groove that will have everyone bobbing their heads.

A few years back the band was crowned the winners of the Big Money Shot competition held by Ottawa radio station, Live 88.5 FM.

Right away, the band gained regional popularity, touring and performing their singles and debut album while opening for well-known Canadian artists like Sam Roberts, Serena Ryder, and The Trews.

Early in 2018, they returned to the studio with a set of new songs to record. For more than a year the band worked effortlessly to get the songs just right.

According to the band, their new album is a “concept album that encourages the listener to question contemporary pop culture values.”

We largely agree. These guys are very talented and not willing to lower their values and standards to appeal to a certain mainstream appeal. We only wish they had their E.P. on Soundcloud or Bandcamp for streaming without having to go to Spotify. (For the anti-Spotify folk, which there are many)

As their fans know, The Lionyls music truly comes to life during live performances where their skillful musicianship, charismatic presence, and raw energy invite the audience to join them deep in the groove.

Smoking Alaska – Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Hayes & Conner – Chicago, Illinois
Avalon Highway – Midsomer-Norton, England

moonroof-indie-band

Moonroof – “Trojans”

Philadelphia-based indie band Moonroof creates its own brand of upbeat, catchy indie/alt-pop. They’ve also been fairly quickly building up a following in Philly and beyond with impressive must-hear tracks like the band’s newest single, “Trojans.”

The band says the song originated from one of the member’s attraction to someone they didn’t really click with but still pursued the relationship anyway.

“Something about the person kept him interested,” said drummer Dan Rendine. “We’ve all been there before – chasing after something we know we shouldn’t.”

As summer winds down for another year, it’s almost even more of a rush to share ‘summery’ tracks with our listeners (we have a number of them in the wings). This is one of them as are other tracks herewithin and in the yellow bar playlist at the bottom of the page (the best DIY of 2019).

“We really wanted a summer chill style song to pair with this melody so the guitars created that warm and sparkly tone that’s felt throughout,” Rendine adds.

In April 2018, Moonroof released the debut E.P. Good Luck Out There. The band followed that with three singles: “Honey Honey” last fall, followed by “Be Somebody” and “Home Alone” earlier this year.

The band members are Dave Kim (vocals); Dan Rendine (drums); Nick Cellucci (guitar, keys, vocals); Danny Walsh (guitar) and Kevin Randolph (bass/vox). The four then-students met in a Bloomsburg University dorm, where they graduated in 2017.

Moonroof’s music is unmistakably indie-pop; light, poppy vocals; soaring, ethereal guitar leads; steady, driving rhythms and funky bass lines with hip-hop/rock combo beat.

Originally called The Big Picture, the band started out playing acoustic sets at open mics for a few years – refining their craft – before “getting serious and moving on to bars and clubs like big bois [sic],” they write.

“[We’re] on a journey to conquer the underground Philly scene.” Some would argue they’re doing a good job of it.

This past June marked a milestone for Moonroof when they shared the same bill with The Lumineers, Death Cab for Cutie, Grouplove and others at the Radio 104.5 12th Birthday Show.

The band’s musical influences include The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club, and Last Dinosaurs.

rolling-blackouts

Rolling Blackouts – “In The Capital”

Similar to past singles like “French Press” and “Talking Straight,” Australian indie rock band Rolling Blackouts’ newest single, “In The Capital,” has the same glossy, youthful glow and energy.

The track is the first new drop from the Melbourne quintet since the 2018 release of their debut album Hope Downs.

“I first had the idea for the melody and some of the lyrics when I was swimming,” said Rolling Blackouts’ Fran Kearney.

“It’s taken a while to finish the song, to make it feel like the initial feeling. I can’t neatly describe it, but something like connection despite the distance.

“I was thinking about transience and water and death and big cities and fishing towns and moon river.”

Rolling Blackouts has had a quick rise, some would say, including as a band to watch at the all-important 2019 South by Southwest conference.

NOTE: The band’s original name was Rolling Blackouts but was changed to Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever for a reason that is unclear.

Toui Manikhouth

Toui Manikhouth – “Is It Strange?”

The single, “Is It Strange?,” from Canadian songwriter, vocalist and musician Toui Manikhouth, is his latest beautiful track that is turning folks on with its gorgeous melodies and vocals.

His acoustic guitar playing is calm yet engaging. Recorded and produced at home, the single was mastered by Michael Chambers (Royal Wood, Paul Federici, Boy With An Atlas).

Born in Dunnville, Ontario, Canada and now living in Hamilton, Toui Manikhouth sets out to create music wildly different from past projects.

In 2016, Manikhouth (Man-ee-couth) released, This Service/The Fire, a collection of sweet, thoughtfully composed acoustic songs.

Interestingly, his other music endeavor is as a member of the metal rock band Hey Clown.

By entertaining these dual sides of his artistic personality, Manikhouth adds a well-rounded flair to his songwriting arsenal.

smokingalaska

Smoking Alaska – “Through The Blue”

Dreamy guitars of warm melodic distortion, extensive, deep bass riffs and tight, creative drums are the main contours of the music of The Netherlands indie rock band Smoking Alaska.

This is true on the band’s most recent single, “Through The Blue.” The members know how to create a good atmosphere and then switch it up.

They are armed with songs that range from soft melancholic numbers to harder, more alt. rock-style songs.

The band’s main influences are Muse, Nothing But Thieves, STRFKR, Franz Ferdinand, and The Strokes.

Hayes & Conner – “No Need To Feel Wrong”

The first few seconds of the track “No Need To Feel Wrong” may remind listeners right away of Nick Drake’s style of guitar playing, wherein blues-folk meets the acoustic troubadour’s organic, rhythmic flow.

“After completing our debut album [2014], we let it sit for four years without promotion or show support,” says the Chicago music duo Hayes & Conner.

What happened earlier this year was a surprise to them both.

Back when they recorded the album, the duo didn’t think of that track as much more than a B-side when they recorded it.

They say the song is about unanswered questions: ‘What if? What could I have done differently or had I listened close enough?”

“When moving through such sadness and disappointment, it was a way to heal. It’s trying to show an appreciation in place of what could have been.”

Filled with sorrow and joy, and the unavoidable highs and lows of life, Hayes says the duo’s songs are “part of the journey of learning to trust, love and become.”

Their debut album, Talking to Myself, was produced by musician Evan Graham Dunn.

avalonhighway

Avalon Highway – “Hungover In The Sun”

The U.K. five-piece indie-pop group Avalon Highway dropped their debut single, “Hungover In The Sun,” just recently.

While summer is near to the end, the song itself has a mean summer vibe that got some attention among bloggers and made the rounds recently.

The band’s driving, roots-influenced debut track was produced by the legendary producer and singer-songwriter Mike Batt.

During nearly a half centuries’ time, Batt has produced dozens of artists, including The Hollies, XTC, and Manic Street Preachers.

Hailing from Midsomer-Norton near Bath, England, Avalon Highway consists of five friends who have blue-collar day jobs and own a music shop in Bath. They’ve opened for bands like Toploader.

Top Indie Singles July 2019, Vol. III – Boundary Run, Daniel Fallon, Neuromantics, Mercvrial, Sansha Blue

The third installment of top July indie singles includes the following artists:

Boundary Run – Omaha, Nebraska
Daniel Fallon – Newcastle, England
Neuromantics – London, England
Mercvrial – Multiple Locales
Sansha Blue – Los Angeles, California
Todd & Jingyu – Ballground, Georgia

Boundary Run – “Make It Out”

The comforting and airy new single, “Make It Out,” comes by way of the Omaha-based band Boundary Run.

The breezy folk track has been making its way onto various playlists for a couple of months now.

Artist Tim Halperin and writer/producer Billy Van formed their indie project “to explore a reflective style of expression” with songs that evoke “wonder and introspection through a warm landscape of strings, piano, and guitar.” The sound and vocals remind us of Bon Iver.

The track brims with warmth, emotion, and space to concentrate on lyrics and get lost in the coziness of the track.

While originally from Omaha, Halperin recently wed and moved to Nashville.

daniel-fallon

Daniel Fallon – “Death of an Anthem”

U.K. musician Daniel Fallon’s latest single, “Death of an Anthem,” is a brash lo-fi alt. rock/garage rock chugger.

This sizzling number is the first song from his new album, The Beginning, which has been making the rounds on blogs and playlists across the web.

Fallon says the song “represents a nostalgia for anthemic songs and a youth-centered on musical togetherness,” adding that the track “has its dark and light element, with an almost religious experience towards the end.”

Notice how the track transitions from an energetic rocker to a mellowed out blazer.

The album is first of what Fallon plans to be a trilogy of albums that have been in the works for years.

A quintessential one-man band, Fallon writes, records, mixes, sings and performs all of the instruments himself, including guitars and percussion.

Influenced by artists ranging from Vampire Weekend, Oasis The Beatles and The Strokes, Fallon’s decidedly Brit-pop/rock sound is bright and infectious.

Fallon describes his musical journey as one with the aim “to get the feel of an indie/alternative group, focusing on high energy, direct melodic rock. My project is a trilogy of alternative/indie anthems with a beginning a middle and an end.”

An experienced and widely-traveled globe-trotter, Fallon has lived and performed in various countries while his music itself remains distinctly British.

“I have lived, traveled and played in many countries and continents but I feel the soul of my music is very British.”

mercvrial

Mercvrial – “Carnival”

Originating from nowhere, but instead sprawled out across several states and Mexico, the eclectic indie group Mercvrial crafts dream pop and shoegaze elements to create heavy, shimmering layers of guitars, hazy vocals and booming percussions on one of the band’s newest singles, “Carnival. ”

The accompanying video uses a format similar to that of VH1’s pop-up videos. More specifically, the video for the track was inspired by the video “This Can’t Be Today” from the band Rain Parade.

Each of the band members filmed a part of the completed video in locales from Wisconsin, Virginia, California, and Mexico. Their musical influences include artists such as Ride, Slowdive, and The Chills.

“Carnival” and another single, “Otherworld,” will appear on Mercvrial’s upcoming EP titled The Stars, Like Dust, set for release on August 9th.

Neuromantics – “Clarity”

The London four-piece rock band Neuromantics’ new single, “Clarity,“ is an “existential power chord alt-rocker that makes it a perfect track for a warm summer day or night time party.

The track grooves with intricately woven guitar melodies, inspirational vocals, smooth bumbling bass lines, and upbeat drums, proving a catchy, memorable vibe.

Frontman Daniel Pye writes: “’Clarity’ encourages a path centered on facing your fears and inner demons; exploring and making the most of the opportunities that come along in life; and having the strength to engage in the life for you, not society’s expectations of who or what you should be.”

This is the new band’s third single from their debut album, Crimes of Passion, and is accompanied by the official music video. The video features the dream-like evening adventures of “two strikingly different yet potentially closely intertwined individuals” who end up together in the end.

The band’s previous singles have won the praise of some in the London music press and fans alike. In addition to Pye, the band members include Andrew Gambell (guitar/keyboards), Daniel Timoteo (bass/vocals) and Edgars Ozolins (drums).

The members come from diverse backgrounds, “originally hailing from various corners of the globe” bringing a more varied range of genres and styles that inform the band’s overall sound.

sanshablue

Sansha Blue – “Give It Time”

Chris Paraggio is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. In 2015, Paraggio began writing and recording a series of demos.

Initially, he founded a band called CAPTCHA, but dissolved the group to work solo as the recording artist Sansha Blue.

His new single, “Give It Time,” is a sugary sweet psych-pop track that has melodic and synergetic resonance topped with hypnotic layers.

After dropping his solo debut E.P., The Grey Area, Paraggio began to write and record with his friend and songwriting ally, Edward Smith. Together they recorded and dropped the E.P, Without Me.

Next, Paraggio asked long-time friend John Baggetta to help engineer and co-produce Sansha Blue’s last effort, beginning with “Give It Time.”

The live band includes musicians Trevor Jones, Finn Ruane, and Stephen Papa.

The single is from the LP, You Could Try If You Wanted To, set to drop this Friday. In addition to Paraggio and Baggetta, Trevor Jones, Finn Ruane, and Stephen Papa perform as part of the live band.

toddjingyu

Todd and Jingyu – “Boy and Girl”

All we can say is this is different and interesting. Not sure what others will think; it’s definitely more than the regular submission we receive.

The musical interplay on “Boy and Girl” from L.A. based band Todd (Lerner) and Jingyu (Yao) is fun and enthusiastic and the fade effects on female vocals of Jingyu Yao in the chorus is really inviting; it’s a nice reprieve from the conversational core of the track.

Lerner is American and Yao is Chinese living in America. Their boy/girl pop duets are reminiscent of duos like She & Him.

If you listen in order, the album follows the couple’s own relationship story with the energies of falling in love, breaking down and soul-searching.

The music is captivating, charming, piano-driven and duet driven. The album apparently took a decade to write and record, according to the couple. They are giving away the album for free via their official website.

Chicago’s Stolen Silver Drops New Single from E.P.

Connecting two Midwest locales – the big city of Chicago, Illinois and the small town of Traverse City, Michigan – the indie band Stolen Silver went to great lengths to record their latest E.P. titled Sanctuary Sessions, which is set to drop later this summer.

What brought the members from the big city out to the pastoral lands of Wisconsin for this recording was a 150-year-old Gothic church. The E.P. was tracked and filmed live on location.

The lead single from the sessions, “Still,” is a warm, airy and enchanting song with intimate melodies. One of my first thoughts when listening to this track was what a perfect road trip song it is.

There are not many bands that we’d dare say sound a bit like Fleet Foxes (remember them?), but there are moments when listening to this track that the comparison is almost unmistakable. But in a way that is still Stolen Silver’s own.

Other elements like touches of soul and pop are expressed in the enchanting instrumentation and the captivating vocals, demonstrating a keen level of musical and lyrical sophistication.

Obviously part of the band’s journey to the historic church was for the acoustics and overall setting of the space – both of which make for compelling audio and video. The video was shot with numerous angles and close-ups of the band members performing.

The band’s roots go back a decade ago when musicians and songwriters Dan Myers and Levi Britton were rooming together in Chicago.

Over time, they discovered similar musical interests and began to respect one another’s work. So much so that they began writing and recording together and thus formed Stolen Silver.

Over the years, their initial vision of a folk duo expanded into a full six-piece band featuring a collection of veteran multi-instrumentalists and drummers like Christopher Sterr; John Paul; Jonathan Tornga; Shawn Rios; and more recently, Red Wanting Blue’s drummer Dean Anshutz and bassist Joe Ayoub (Shakira, Enrique).

The duo, with a supporting band, has toured extensively around the Midwest and the United States. Nowadays, half of the band resides in Chicago while the other half lives in Traverse City, Michigan.

5 Bands That Rock, Vol. VII – Tsar, Dreamers, Eight Feet Deep, The Bitter Roots, and The New Self-Defense

The Bands That Rock playlist and profile series reviews rock bands, often DIY or under-the-radar, whose talents should not go unnoticed. Most of the bands in this series – as with many other of our playlist series – sent their music in for review. In fact, we receive close to, or more than, a hundred submissions a month.

In the past, the Bands that Rock series has been popular with IRC readers, and this marks the seventh installment of this particular series, highlighting bands like Tsar, Dreamers, Eight Feet Deep, The Bitter Roots and The New Self Defense.

Tsar – Los Angeles

Los Angeles rock, punk and glam band Tsar have been a fixture of LA’s underground rock scene for 15 years. Last fall the band dropped a new EP last fall titled The Dark Stuff, featuring the two blistering tracks below. Over all the years – and 15 years is a long time for a band – Tsar’s line-up has remained intact from the beginning, featuring Jeff Whalen (vocals, guitar), Dan Kern (guitar, vocals), Jeff Solomon (bass), and Steve Coulter (drums).

From the moment they broke out on the LA scene in 1998, they were quickly signed to Aderra Records. We were not unaware of Tsar; in fact, years ago we saw them play in LA and we were rocked to the core by their blazing, guttural sound. Over time, like so many bands, we had lost track of them. So, it was a pleasant surprise to see the band pop up on our radar again with a couple of fresh tracks they had sent in to for review. The Dark Stuff EP is the band’s first release of new material in seven years.

The lead single, “Police Station,” comes blazing out of the gates from start with lively kinetic energy of blazing guitar riffs and bombastic drumming. Over the years, Tsar have shared the stage with bands like Jet, The Walkmen, Marvelous 3, Eve 6, New York Dolls, Duran Duran, and Social Distortion. Their major musical influences include T. Rex, The Pooh Sticks, MGMT, The Replacements, The Hives, David Bowie, The Stooges, and the New York Dolls.

Dreamers – Warwick, Rhode Island

Highly regarded for their firey and energetic live shows throughout New England and the New York metro area, Rhode Island DIY powerhouse rockers Dreamers have been on repeated rotation in our DIY bands playlist (that includes hundreds of unsigned bands) for a few months, and are a perfect fit for IRC’s Bands That Rock series. Lead singer and guitarist Christian Shields has quite a range to his voice, as demonstrated in the screaming rocker, “Way It Feels,” an edgy screecher and tribute to a 350 Chevy, packed with blistering, yet melodic hooks, crunchy power chords, head-banging beats, and rapid-fire bass playing. The second track the band submitted, “Live For Today,” is a hard rock ballad, and perhaps the most standout – and radio-ready – track on Dreamers’ debut LP, Turn It Up.

Dreamers has been mixing metal, pop and rock since their humble beginnings in 2010, and have become a local favorite throughout Rhode Island pretty much from the get-go; they’ve even garnered praise in blogs, newspapers and magazines throughout the New York metropolitan area. The band was started by brothers, Christian and Nathan Shields, who were both former members of Last One Standing. They’ve also shared the stage with artists like All That Remains, Burn Halo, Candlebox, Firewind, Hawthorne Heights, Hollywood Undead, Lynch Mob, Saliva and Saving Abel. Not surprisingly, Dreamers, which isn’t exactly a name that matches their hard rock sound, count among their top musical influences bands such as Kiss, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Motley Crue, Senses Fail, Ratt, and Cinderella.

Eight Feet Deep – Sayville, New York

Formed in 2010, Eight Feet Deep is a DIY progressive rock project of musician, songwriter and singer Billy ‘Pills’ Fridrich from Sayville, New York. Last year, he released EFD’s self-titled debut EP, even though we only learned about it recently when Fridrich sent us in a couple of singles from the EP to listen to.

In addition to songwriting and singing (with backup vocals from Mike DiMeo), Fridrich also plays all of the instruments (except for programmed drum beats), including guitars and bass. Fridrich is well-known in the Long Island music scene as a rocker with a melodic voice and keen songwriting abilities for his work as the frontman for bands like Celestial and Heavysurf. He also has another musical side project – No Excuses – performing 90’s cover songs.

Fridrich’s musical influences include Led Zeppelin, King’s X, Sevendust, Alter Bridge, and Pink Floyd. It is apparent in the songs he sent in that Fridrich also draws inspiration from classic late 80’s and early 90’s rock bands like Soundgarden, Candlebox, White Lion and Van Halen. If you’re interested in hearing other songs from the EP, you can do so on Spotify.

The Bitter Roots – Seattle, Washington

Seattle rock duo The Bitter Roots, formed in 2007, recently released a new album, Chiaroscuro that pays tribute to their musical heroes, and influences, including, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Carlos Santana, Bob Marley, Jane’s Addiction, U2, The Smiths, and The Cure, among others. The duo features Jeff Stetson and Ben Koostra. Their music has been heard on 50 radio stations from coast to coast and throughout Canada, Austrailia and The Netherlands. The duo only record live to analog tape, and make a point of stating that they do not use Auto Tune, Click Track, samples, programmed drum beats or employ other “short cuts” of modern recording. Combining elements of soul and rock, the duo focus on tight rhythms, driving beats and vocal harmonies. Stetson is the former lead singer of manSaveman, a fairly well-known Seattle band that were active in the early to mid 2000s. Stetson also played in the band Chiseler and Into the March. Koostra is a multi-instrumentalist and was the original drummer for the bands Ein Heit and Silkworm.

The New Self Defense – New York, New York

It took us a few spins of the album, Meet Me Overboard, before we warmed up to New York post-hardcore, alternative rock band The New Self Defense. The band, originally formed in 2003, have been working for a decade on producing songs with blazing rock chords, heavy bass lines, and energetic drumming. The band formed out of the breakup of the New Jersey-based band Prevent Falls, and have opened for artists like Hey Mercedes, Shades Apart, New Beard, Vs. Antelope, and Damn This Desert Air. The NSD has written and collaborated with artists like Tim Brennan (Dropkick Murphys), Brian Carley (Penfold) and Alf Bartone (Damn This Desert Air, The Fire Still Burns and Ex Number Five).

They cite musical influences as Helmet, The Police, Quicksand, Peter Gabriel, Refused, and Glassjaw. The band’s music has been described before as “Quicksand/Helmet meets The Police on meth.” The band’s lead singer and guitarist, Jeff Carter, said: “Indie rock is the relentless and eternal battle against what MTV did to commercialize and otherwise gut the rock music scene.” So true.
