San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music Festival This Weekend with The Strokes, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, Freelance Whales, Social Distortion

thestrokeslive
The Strokes will close out Day One of Outside Lands Festival

Tens of thousands of music lovers will converge on the gigantic meadows of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this weekend to see dozens of headlining and popular artists and bands, including The Strokes, My Morning Jacket, Social Distortion, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, Al Green, Gogol Bordello, Nas & Damian Marley, Cat Power, Wolfmother, Tokyo Police Club, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Chromeo, Freelance Whales, The Soft Pack, Pretty Lights, The Temper Trap, Wild Beasts, and Further with former Grateful Deads members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir.

While the line-up for the weekend fest is impressive, Outside Lands does not have the same breath of performances as it has enjoyed during it’s first two years; instead of three days, the festival has been shaved down to two days, mainly as the result of a swell of angry citizen groups who complained about everything from noise to parking (failing to credit the revenue it brought into the same neighborhoods adjacent to the city’s massive park). The area where the fest is held covers approximately 30 city blocks long and about 10 blocks wide.

Also, you can see our coverage of Outside Lands 2008 (with Radiohead and Beck!) and 2009 (Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse and more).

The following is a schedule of the performances we plan to cover this weekend (some set times are rounded off; stage names are included; here’s the fest map):

Best New Releases: Elsinore, The Budos Band, Lost in the Trees, Burnt Ones, Kathryn Calder, Landing on the Moon, Women

With all of the buzz surrounding last week’s release of Arcade Fire‘s their third album, The Suburbs, it has a way of overshadowing other new releases. Nonetheless, there are some worthy new releases this week that you may want to sink your teeth into. Most notably in our eyes (well, ears) is the debut LP from an Illinois band no one has heard of, and who convincingly has made our ‘bands to watch’ list.

The Champaign-Urbana pop quintet, Elsinore, self-released their second EP, The Chemicals, earlier this year, and we were intrigued right away. Now, six months later, the band has dropped their debut LP, Yes Yes Yes, via the understated Parasol Records label. The LP contains a remix from Gentleman Auction House frontman Eric Enger. Elsinore have previously opened for St. Vincent, Headlights and The Generationals. We absolutely love the new LP, and recommend snatching it up, as well as their EPs,  if you dig the tracks below. It’s time this band broke out.

“Yes Yes Yes” Elsinore from Yes Yes Yes

“Even’s Basement Recording” Elsinore from The Chemicals

“Lines” Elsinore from The Chemicals

“Breathing Light”Elsinore from The Chemicals

The Budos Band, a Staten Island, ten-piece afro funk band who’ve toured relentlessly over the years, and built somewhat of a following, dropped their aptly named LP, III. Plus, check out new music from Burnt Ones,  Lost in the Trees, The Budos Band, Burnt Ones, Kathryn Calder, Titles, Bottomless Pit, Landing on the Moon,  and more.

“Unbroken, Unshaven” – The Budos Band from The Budos Band III

“Burnt to Lose” Burnt Ones from Black Teeth & Golden Tongues

“Walk Around The Lake” – Lost in the Trees from All Alone in an Empty House

“Arrow” Kathryn Calder from Are You My Mother?

“Comeback”Roman Ruins from 7″ single

“Lover of Mine” (Romain Ruins Remix) – Beach House

“38 Souls” – Bottomless Pit from Blood Under The Bridge

“Bleeding Hearts” – Landing on the Moon from We Make History Now

“Road Regrets” Dan Mangan from Nice, Nice, Very Nice

“More & More & More” – The Mountain and The Trees from I Made This For You

What’s Coming Up:

  • Rising band Women will release a new LP on August 23 in Europe and Sept. 28 in U.S. On September 25, The Rattles will release the LP, Rattle On.

“Eye Sore” – Women from Public Strain

In Dee Mail, Vol. IV: Opus Orange, The Migrant, Joe Gil, Peephole, Ideals, Luge, Sonen, Millstead, Cuckoo Chaos

The music submissions to Indie Rock Cafe from artists and bands around the world are piling up at a rate that makes it quite a challenge to keep up with. However, when we hear music we like – and there’s a lot of it – from artists and bands that most people – even online music fanatics – have never heard of, it is always a special moment when you hear something completely unexpected, unknown and new that you never heard before. And that’s music we share all of the time on IRC, and why we’re different than the follow-the-hits and the buzz blogs that saturate the web.

We receive tons of wonderful world from artists and bands around the world, and it’s a never-ending challenge to keep up with it all. For us, and many of our regular visitors over the years, the In Dee Mail series has become a cornerstone of Indie Rock Cafe’s identity because there are so many artists writing, recording and sharing splendid music that we would have probably never heard of unless they sent in their music to us for review.

Even though this mix presents artists and bands that most of you have probably never heard before, it is just a sampling of what’s to come in the ensuing weeks from our mailbag. In the meantime, sit back, fire up this playlist, read a little about the featured artists, and hopefully, you discover some music in today’s mix that you will cherish forever. To kick this off, we have a new song exclusive from an artist (who we’ve never been able to get a photo of) who has been a favorite here and on the web every time he sends us a new track.

Opus Orange – Santa Monica, California

Paul Bessenbacher is a successful commercial composer who has created music for various television commercials and TV shows. Chances are you’ve heard Paul’s music before, perhaps on The Last Comic Standing, The Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Stacked, or in commercials for Cadillac, Johnsonville Sausages, Tide, among others.

When he gets time away from his real job, Bessenbacher writes and records catchy tracks using the moniker us Orange. We just received this new track with Lauren Hillman, making it’s web premier here on IRC.

“Almost There” (with Lauren Hillman) – Opus Orange

Here’s another track from 2009, and more here and here.

“Nothing But Time” – Opus Orange

The Migrant – Denmark

The Migrant is a rising Danish musician Bjarke Bendtsen, whose travels in the U.S. served as the material for his debut LP, Travels in Lowland, due to drop on September 21st, with a companion album, Amerika, due in the spring of 2011.

“The Organ Grinder” The Migrant from Travels in Lowland

Joe+gil

Joe Gil – Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles singer/songwriter and musician Joe Gil caught our attention with his gorgeous vocals, clever story-telling and impressive songcrafting, most especially on the two tracks he sent us, “Wood Block” and “Packed Our Past”.  Gil’s DIY debut EP will be released on Sept. 18th. We love these songs and can’t wait to hear more.

peephole-band

Peephole – Brooklyn, New York

Peephole is the moniker of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kent Odessa of Brooklyn. In the summer of  2008, Odessa began performing live with musicians he knew from around the city, and soon after released Peephole’s debut EP, Cold Dime – an impressive EP that demonstrates not only Odessa’s many talents, but his extraordinary range as an artist, drawing from lo-fi melancholy songs like “Name” to the raw, T. Rex style of “Guilty Boat” and  “Black Topaz” – the latter two songs are among the best in the young man’s discography.

“Guilty Boat”Peephole from Cold Dime (2009)

“Black Topaz” –  Peephole from Cold Dime (2009)

Odessa then collaborated with producer Jeremy Jonas Cox, on the recording and release of his second 2009 EP, Strawberry Told Me. The stand out track on that EP is clearly “Who Will Love You Til The End?” . The funky pop sounds that dominant Strawberry has an unquestionable heavy influence from Prince.

“Who Will Love You Til The End?” Peephole from Strawberry Told Me

After listening to all three of his free EPs, it’s apparent that there are so many layers to his music – various textures and influences from disco to pop and new wave to rock. Peephole’s latest EP, Crime Drama, is out now, and contains the two tracks found below. Let us know what you think.

“Silence for Kindness”Peephole from Crime Drama (2010)

“Half a Soul”Peephole, previously unreleased

Ideals – London, England

Four young lads from London, who make up the band Ideals, have been on our radar this summer, and we still think they have strong potential to break-out at anytime. Last week, they sent us a brand new track, “Forever Leisure”.

“Forever Leisure” Ideals

Luge+photo

Luge – Mexico City, Mexico

Listening to Luge‘s music, you probably would never know they are a rock band from Mexico City. Taking that into consideration, and the fact that the band has never been written about online or in print, according to band member Gerardo Ocejo, we wanted to see what others think of Luge’s music; there are glimmers of potential here. Influenced by bands that range from Pixies to The Stones Roses and Fleetwood Mac to AC/DC, Luge released their debut LP on July 12th.

If you want to tell us what you think of this band, please use the Comments section below (does not require registration and it’s fast).

“Empowered Son”Luge from Heartaches & Sunrises

Sonen – Atlanta, Georgia

The Atlanta electro-dance-indie band Sonen recently sent their rocking dance track, “Head Down”, and the 80’s new wave meets rock sound of the song, “Vividly Blue” – a bit of B52’s and Devo going on in that. The band’s sound is dark and urgent, brimming with heavy melodies and Joy Division-like harmonies.  They count among their influences Crystal Castles, The Pixies, Phantogram, and Orbital. Sonen’s EP is available for free download; just click their MySpace link below. Would love to hear what you all think.

These United States-band

These United States – Kentucky and Washington, DC

Last fall, These United States, released their third album, Everything Touches Everything, which was well received by fans, bloggers and media critics. In fact, Spin gave the album four out of five stars, calling it “intoxicating,” adding it “brilliantly captures the overwhelming jolt of simply being alive.”

“Everything Touches Everything” – These United States from Everything Touches Everything (2009)

These United States also just released yet another new LP; although we prefer Everything Touches Everything, here’s one of the lead singles from their latest LP, What Lasts.

“The Great Rivers” These United States from What Lasts (2010)

Millstead – New York, New York

Although they disbanded abruptly in November of 2009 for what they called “rock and roll cliche bullsh*t”, New York City’s Millsted left us with their debut LP, The Great Adventures Of The Gold Red Rocket. The band was a buzz band in NYC throughout 2008, especially during the city’s annual CMJ music marathon. At their height, the band had already amassed more than 1.5 million profile views on MySpace. Check out these two songs, the wall-of-noise, punk rock of  “The Gold Red Rocket”, and the guitar-driven indie rock of the catchy track, “I Got Soul”.

Cuckoo Chaos – San Diego, California

Another band from San Diego, the interestingly named Cuckoo Chaos, is prepping for an expected release of their debut LP later this year. In the meantime, the band recently dropped their debut EP, We Are From Deerplants. After a decade of living as a nomad in America,  Scott Wheeler found his version of utopia in San Diego in 2007, and immersed himself in the local music scene, which has spawned a bunch of break-out indie bands over the past 18 months or so, including Wavves, Avi Buffalo and Crocodiles.

“Slowly Counting Down to Nothing” Cuckoo Chaos from We Are From Deerplants

Scattergun – Chicago, Illinois

Recently, the Chicago Americana indie rock band Scattergun released its debut LP, Fantasy Lounge, to perhaps understated coverage and reviews. The band members are well respected musicians in the Chicago area, and their songs feature the finer elements of country-influenced rock, including sharp melodies with sliding guitar riffs, moving rhthyms and well executed vocals.

Woolen – Los Angeles, California

Woolen is a Los Angeles shoegaze-melodic pop band that came to our attention In Dee Mail. After sending us some of their songs from their new release out today, Dweller on the Threshold, we were impressed with their well executed sound, like pros that don’t yet have the pro status. The trio include among their biggest influences Red House Painters and Mark Kozelek, the heavy drone of Black Sabbath, and the ambient-noise of My Bloody Valentine. Somebody sign this band.

The Alphabet – Columbus, OH-Boston, MA

The Alphabet (previously known as Pretty Balanced) is a Columbus, Ohio-Boston, Mass. band that became something of an underground indie sensation during the latter half of the last decade. Recently, they got attention with the song, “Prosthetic Face,” a somewhat morbid story of a woman who decides that she wants a plastic surgeon to “carve up” her “ugly face.” The band members are mysteriously listed as Judith Jewcakes (voice, keyboard instruments); Parker Car (electric and upright bass) and Forest Creatures (percussion, violin).

The band describe themselves as a trio of young nerds with a fascination for “creating bubbly music on horribly morbid topics.” Their 2006 DIY debut, Icicle Bicycle, sold out, which was followed up in 2008 with a “perkier and more electronic-based” Conical Monocle, that led to a successful two-week string of concerts in Edinburgh, Scotland. Last year, the band released an EP, Scarlet Starlet.

The Nod – Madison, Wisconsin

As often happens with music we receive via email, we were surprised when we first heard the Madison, Wisconsin band The Nod why we hadn’t heard of them before. Formed in basements around the city of Madison in 2008, the band went through a number of line-up changes before deciding on three members to make-up the band: Brett Newski (lead vocals/guitars), Eric Maloney (bass/vocals) and Nate Devroy (drums).

On “Lie in All Honesty”, The Nod’s electric garage pop rock and punk attitude are hard to ignore, and which helped the band land opening spots for major artists like Third Eye Blind, OK Go, Cage the Elephant, Bowling for Soup, among others. The band includes among its influences The Strokes, The Pixies, Cake, Weezer, Elliott Smith, Montel Jordan, We Are Scientists, and Pavement.

According to the band, the album, Easy Maverick, is three years of work recorded in 30 days.

Solo Debuts from Band Members of Radiohead, New Pornographers, Pinback, Them Crooked Vultures, Eels, Travis, Cat Power

It might just be that we are more aware of it than previous summers, but it seems like there are more solo debuts from band members of alternative and indie rock bands in 2010.

One of the most anticipated is Phil Selway‘s (Radiohead) upcoming release, Familial, due to drop August 30th. Selway collaborated with singer/songwriter Lisa Germano, ex-Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg, Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone.

“By Some Miracle”Philip Selway from Familial

Kathryn Calder, of the super Canadian indie band, The New Pornographers, will release her debut, Are You My Mother?, next week, August 10th, via Killbeat Music.

“Arrow” Kathryn Calder from Are You My Mother?

Founding member of the Eels, Tommy Walter, has been working on a new album under the moniker Abandoned Pools (wonder if that’s reference to skateboarding). Walter recently sent this track from the album, which still does not have a release date.

“Legionnaire” Abandoned Pools from TBA

Glasgow, Scotland has contributed its fair share to the alternative and indie rock, and one of best in the past couple of decades has been the stellar band Travis. Founding member, Fran Healy, will drop his debut solo album, Wreckorder, on October 4th.

“Buttercups”Fran Healy from Wreckorder

Former Desolation Wildnerness band member Nic Zwart will officially release his solo self-titled debut album on September 7th using his music project moniker, Electric Sunset.

“Soda” Electric Sunset from s/t debut

Musician and songwriter Alain Johannes, who has contributed to albums by Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures, drops his debut, Spark, August 17th via Rekords Rekords/Dangerbird Records.

“Endless Eyes”Alain Johannes from Spark

Kenseth Thibideau, former member of bands like Pinback, Three Mile Pilot, and Tarentel, released his debut solo album, Repetition, on July 20th. The LP was heavily influenced by Thibideau’s obsession with classic krautrock and European prog that is channeled through swirling keyboards, looped grooves, rich melodies, and the singer’s unique vocals.

“Moon” – Kenseth Thibideau from Repetition

In 2009, Andrew Kenny, lead singer and songwriter for the American Analog Set, started a new music project with some friends and named the band The Wooden Birds. Not long after, the band signed with the indie label Barsuk Records, and recently released the debut LP, Magnolia.

“False Alarm” – The Wooden Birds from Magnolia

“Punk As Fu*k” American Analog Set from Know By Heart (2001)

Last, but not least, Erik Parapazzi, bassist for Cat Power, released Rococo, his solo debut that should give CP fans something to tie them over until the next CP album release.

For a limited time, you can download the 16-track Suburbs from Amazon for only $3.99

For a lot of indie rock fans, today marks the official release of one of the most anticipated albums of the year. That would be Arcade Fire‘s first album in three years, and the Montreal‘s band third studio LP since forming in 2002, The Suburbs.

A few advance singles from the LP have been making the rounds on the web for the past three months, but the rest of the tracks on the The Suburbs were kept under tight wraps, except for some live versions of other songs on the album recorded at recent Arcade Fire shows.

arcadefiresuburbs

As with their previous records, the band returns again – as they had with Neon Bible and their debut, The Funeral – to the themes of suburban sprawl, the utter dystopia of modern life, a longing for another time and place, and constant critiques of the spread of strip malls, with the omni present disenchantment imposed by commercial monopolization that has over taken the American, and apparently, Canadian, landscape, forever dismantling the infrastructure of thousands of communities that once took pride in their autonomy and unique character, and a longing for a dream that slips further away with the passing of each decade. The suburbs were supposed to be a good thing.

Arcade Fire, probably more than any other rock band we know of, appears to be hell bent on documenting the history of the rise and fall of suburban life. In fact, every song on The Suburbs contains the word suburbs in some form, making the LP much like a modern day “soap opera”, or concept, album, a comparison the band has reportedly dismissed.

“The Suburbs”– Arcade Fire from The Suburbs

So far, reviews of the album have been largely positive. However,  The New York Daily News gave it 2.5 of 5 stars; writer Jim Farber summing it up as a “new-wave symphony gets lost in musical sprawl.” Pitchfork went in the other direction, giving The Suburbs a 8.6 out of 10, observing: “The bulk of The Suburbs focuses on this quiet desperation borne of compounding the pain of wasting your time as an adult by romanticizing the wasted time of your youth. As bleak as the lyrics are, though, they’re buoyed by the band’s leanest, loosest songwriting yet.”

“Rococo”Arcade Fire from The Suburbs

Watch Arcade Fire live on YouTube Thursday night, August 5, from Madison Square Garden – one of two sold out shows.

In using MetaCritic as a guiding light for the overall opinion of The Suburbs, it scores an impressive 95 out of 100, making it likely to be a huge success. Many critics are calling it the band’s best album – in totality – and that’s saying a lot.

“Sprawl II”Arcade Fire from The Suburbs

“Half Light I”Arcade Fire from The Suburbs

While The Suburbs is Arcade Fire’s most rocking, and in other respects, most new wave work to date, with less emphasis on orchestra pop that propelled the band to international fame, it is also one of those albums that you wonder what how you will feel about in the years to come.

Is it possible to love this album even more a year from now, after the hype machine finally winds down? Absolutely. But, at this moment, there is no question that the three year time-span without fresh material from the band has been well worth the wait. The Suburbs is likely to be the album of the summer, if not the year.

wavves-kingofbeach

Wavves – King of the Beach

It wasn’t long ago that some bloggers, musicians and fans were writing off one of the fastest rising one man bands of the past few years. But, after a year of rebuilding and rehabilitating – following a disturbing string of of public incidents involving drugs and alcohol, bar fights with other rock musicians, scuffles on stage with fellow band members, and a storm of bad publicity – San Diego musician Nathan Williams, the founding member of Wavves, has recruited a new band that includes former members of Jay Reatard’s band, and seems to be getting his shi*t together.

“Post Acid” – Wavves from King of the Beach

Candy Claws – Hidden Lands

Candy Claws is a Colorado-based indie duo (Ryan Hover and Kay Bertholf) that is not just another band of young guys playing around on keyboards and Macbooks to create fuzzy, amniotic dream pop. The friends who met in church have now apparently turned their attention from religion to music and science.

The duo’s second LP, Hidden Lands, is a musical companion piece to Richard M. Ketchum‘s 1970 plant-life book, The Secret Life of the Forest. In fact, there is so much happening in the music that the band has had to expand to eight members for live shows.

“Sunbeam Show” Candy Claws from Hidden Lands

Air Conditioning School – General Mountain Time

Minneapolis band Air Conditioning School is a solo project of Chris Heidman (Sukpatch), whose releases on Sub Pop,  Grand Royal and Moshi Moshi have brought him much acclaim from critics and music lovers alike. Now, Heidnam has released his anticipated debut LP, General Mountain Time, and from the little bit we’ve heard so far, it’s sounding pretty sweet.

Recent Releases We Almost Missed, Vol. X: Sun Kil Moon, Dom, Lanterns, Pearly Gates Music, The Burning Hotels, Apollo Ghosts

markkozelek

San Francisco musician, singer, and songwriter Mark Kozelek released a new album with his band, Sun Kil Moon, last week that we were dumb enough not to include in the weekly Best New Releases feature. Although we have not heard the LP, Admiral Fell Promises, in its entirety yet, this track, “Australian Winter” is typical Kozelek – sombre, melancholy and poetic, except there is definitely a traditional Spanish guitar aspect to this song that is simply wonderful.

Kozelek is one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of our time, somehow making his pain-soaked songs breath-takingly beautiful. Kozelek is also a founding member of the almost famous band, Red House Painters.

“Australian Winter”Sun Kil Moon from Admiral Fell Promises – July 13th

You can also stream two other songs from the LP on Kozelek’s Caldo Verde Records website.

Dom is a synth-pop trio from Worcester (pronounced woos-tah; the R’s are silent), Massachusetts released their debut EP, Sun Bronzed Gods, in May. The EP includes the summeresque melodic track, complete with a catchy chorus, “Living in America”.

“Living in America” – Dom from Sun Bronzed Gods – May 1st

One terrific CD we didn’t get around to previously, but that we think you might want to check out, is the debut from Pearly Gate Music, an awesome new indie band on Barsuk Records. We heart their debut LP and the lead single, “Big Escape”.

“Big  Escape” – Pearly Gates Music from s/t debut – May 18th

Best New Releases: Best Coast, Menomena, Jaill, Bombay Bicycle Club, Social Studies, Miniature Tigers, The Golden Dogs, The Knocks

Clearly one of the most popular indie bands of the past six months, LA’s surf pop band Best Coast drop their new album this week, Crazy For You. The LP is filled to the brim with edgy, quasi-garage style indie pop rock that creates the framework for the the female equivalent of Brian Wilson‘s golden vocals. Best Coast will likely be on one or more of our favorite bands, songs, albums of year near the end of 2010. And, if you get to see Best Coast in concert, you’re won’t regret it – solid live show.

“Boyfriend” – Best Coast from Crazy For You

One of our favorite break-through rock bands of 2010 so far is Milwaukee‘s very own Jaill (formerly known as simply Jail). We love their creativity, energy and enthusiasm – all of which are expressed remarkably on their new release, That’s How We Burn. If you dig these two songs from Jaill, you may want to get more of the trio’s music;

from what we can hear in listening to Jaill over the course of the past few months, they are one of those bands that  don’t really have ‘throw-away’ tracks.  Afterall, the best indie record label ever, Subpop Records, signed Jaill late last year. The latest Jaill single, “The Stroller” is further evidence that the band has enormous talent and potential rolled into one.

After a three year wait following Menomena‘s terrific 2007 LP, Friend and Foe, the Portland trio has returned with their latest album, Mines. Even though the album was originally expected to be released in 2009, Menomena’s extra time allowed the band members to perfect the songs on Mines, which is evident by listening to it online for free. Would love to hear your opinions on Menomena’s lead single, or any other artist featured in today’s Best New Releases. The album is currently No. 1 on Amazon’s album charts.

“Five Little Rooms” – Menomena from Mines

They are not from India, and are not a bicycle club, but the Bombay Bicycle Club have one of the catchiest band names we’ve heard so far this year. Based in Couch End, London, BBC have carved out a fairly significant following in over the past three to four years, and it’s likely their new album out today, will add to the numbers of their fans.

FYF 2010 Line-up Includes Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Wavves, Titus Andronicus, Best Coast, Ted Leo, Washed Out, Abe Vigado

fyffestla2010lineup

The Fu*k Yeah Fest for 2010 just announced one of the most amazing line-ups we’ve seen for any fest yet this year, particularly because it is so indie dominant with a lot of break-out 2010 bands.

Headliners for FYF Fest 2010 include The Rapture, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Wavves, Washed Out, Titus Andronicus, Delorean, Sleep, !!!, Man Man, Best Coast, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Cold Cave, Abe Vigoda, School of Seven Bells, A.A. Bondy, Magic Kids, The Mountain Goats, Thee Oh Sees, The Growlers, and many more.

What! Yeah, that’s what we said too!

“A More Perfect Union” Titus Andronicus

“Slow Motion” Panda Bear

“Round and Round”Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

“Post Acid” Wavves

“You and I” – Washed Out

Cults is a LA band to watch

And it doesn’t end there; also scheduled to play at the FYF Fest are Sleep, Dead Man’s Bones, Cults, The Soft Pack, Warpaint, Off!, Vetiver, Ceremony, Screaming Females, Lower Dens, Let’s Wrestle, and others.

“Oh My God”Cults

“Arm Over Arm” Screaming Females

“Hospice Gates”  Lower Dens

All of those bands for just $25. While the Early Bird tix, at $20 a pop, are gone, the second tier $25 are still available as of the publication of this post. A fest
with a line-up like this is bound to sell out. Here are a few songs from some of the bands set to hit the stage at Los Angeles State Historic Park on September 4th, Labor Day weekend.

What’s Hot Right Now, Vol. V: Cut Copy, Deerhunter, Panda Bear, The Walkmen, Interpol, El Guincho, Best Coast

It’s been a couple of weeks since we did a What’s Hot Right Now playlist mix. Even though we post hot songs all of the time, WHRN combines what the hottest indie songs are on the web over the past few days, by calculating a combination of top songs on IRC, Hypem, Elbo.ws, and a few other popular ‘hot now’ blogs.

Also, the WHRN playlists are not based necessarily on new releases, since many songs make the rounds before they are released; in fact, most are from upcoming, and much anticipated, new releases.

“Where I’m Going”Cut Copy

“Revival” – Deerhunter

“Slow Motion” Panda Bear

“Stranded” The Walkmen

“Barricade” Interpol

“Bombay”El Guincho

“Empathy”Crystal Castles

“Boyfriend” – Best Coast

“Leaving Trails”Mt. St. Helen’s Vietnam Band

“Baltimore” Tennis
