Best New Music Releases – Youth Lagoon, The Men, Cloud Cult, Javelin, Rhye, How to Destroy Angels, Chelsea Light Moving

Youth-Lagoon-Wondrous-BughouseThis week’s batch of new releases from popular, obscure and signed indie and alternative rock, electro and folk bands offers indie music lovers a large assortment of albums to pick from, as well as singles to stream and download. Keep an eye out for a whole series of recently released DIY albums coming up soon and containing a stunning collection of top-notch singles from artists many folks have never heard before. We’re also working diligently on putting together and publishing the Top 10 Songs weekly playlists for February.

The number of notable releases this past week probably makes this the blockbuster week for new releases so far this year. In fact, there were so many releases to go through, that it delayed the posting of this edition of BNMR. What we can say for sure is this playlist is a feast for the ears – don’t be surprised if you find yourself listening to it again and again. That said, let’s get right to it, starting off with the swirling, melancholic synths and brilliant compositions of Trevor Powers, aka, Youth Lagoon. His sophomore LP, Wondrous Bughouse, is IRC’s Album of the Week, and for good reason. There is a full Spotify stream of the album embedded in the review. Find out why one regular patron of the cafe called it the Sgt. Pepper of 2013.

The masterpiece track, “Dropla,” is the lead single from the album. Also, dip into the versatile genre-fication (garage rock, psychedelic rock, power pop) of The Men; the wonderfully layered prog rock and orchestral pop of Cloud Cult; the richly textured, heavily sampled electro pop debut from Grimes‘ accomplice Doldrums, as well as the totally thrilling, joyous sounds of Superhuman Happiness on the track, “See Me On My Way.” Cy Dune, aka Akron/Family band member Seth Olinsky rocks hard on the single, “Where The Wild Things,” from this solo debut EP, No Recognize, out on vinyl this week via Family Tree Records,

There were also a number of debuts this week , including Los Angeles new comers Rhye, with the deliciously smooth, Sade-like R&B grove of the single, “Open,” from the album Woman; the debut release and lead single from Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and his wife’s post-industrial project, How To Destroy Angles, as well as the self-titled debut from the electro radar band Stubborn Heart.

Fresh Tracks from Robyn Hitchcock, Son Volt

Since we’re on the subject of iconic rockers, post-punk pioneer Robyn Hitchcock dropped a new solo album, Love From London, earlier this week, that features an assortment of strange psychedelic folk-pop songs like the single, “Be Still”. Sticking with the theme of cult figures, Uncle Tupelo co-founder Jay Farrar and his ‘other’ band, Son Volt, just released their seventh album, chock full of roots-inspired honky tonk tracks led by the single, “Hearts and Minds.” Don’t miss the high octane pop of Seattle band Hey Marseilles.

Following F*cked Up, we just got in some new tracks from upcoming releases by Here We Go Magic and Art Brut. Even though they just released a very good LP a few months ago, next week HWGM will release The January EP, which features a collection of songs produced at the band’s upstate New York recording studio.  These songs clearly demonstrate the band’s expanding talent, by now well known within the indie music realm, for creating a musical world with Luke Temples vocals soaring and spinning from track to track. Here We Go Magic are currently touring the U.S.

“Hands in the Sky”Here We Go Magic from The January EP

We just got this tour-only single from Tape Deck Mountain. The song, “Kellies,” will be limited to only 100 cassettes to be sold during TDM shows. On June 2, the band kicks off a multi-city tour with indie band, Woodsman. Plus, here’s a new track, “Left Limb” from Motorboater, from his upcoming debut due in June via The Record Machine.

“Kellies”Tape Deck Mountain

“Left Limb”Motorboater

Next up, are a couple of bands that we’re watching closely as they really start to rise in popularity. They are Pittsburgh duo 1,2,3 have sent out the lead single from their upcoming June 21st debut, New Heaven,  and San Francisco indie psych-rock band  Thee Oh Sees, a band that has been climbing up on the ladder of ‘indie’ recognition, if you will over the past year or so, will release their sophomore album, Castlemania, on May 17th. (Pre-order here)

“I Need Seed” – Thee Oh Sees from Castlemania – out June 14th

Note: You can click on the album titles to order or pre-order most of the tracks in today’s post mixtape. Plus, you’ll get 20 gigs of free (no hidden charges) of cloud space from Amazon.

We’re digging a brand new song, “Summer Solstice,” from Crystal Antlers upcoming new album, Two Way Mirror, set to drop on July 12th. The track, which is the first single from the LP, starts out with a few mellow synth keys and then breaks out into an earnest, melodic semi-rocker with an uplifting rhythm and horsed vocals only to quickly fade away and fizzle out much like it started.

Our criticism of the song is that it is much too short (right as we were getting into it, the track winds down). We really wanted them to exploit the opportunity of a song that had it going on, and set off on a blazing jam with high octane synth and guitar licks, but instead, as we said, a great song ended way to soon. The track comes to us by way of Consequence of Sound, which has a nice piece about the new album by Crystal Antlers.

“Summer Solstice” Crystal Antlers from Two Way Mirror

“Benediction” is a fresh track from Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore‘s up-coming solo album, Demolished Thoughts.  Also, don’t miss Fresh Tracks from YACHT‘s upcoming album, Craig Wedren with Conor Oberst and Janet Weiss, plus, the lead single from Okkervil River‘s new LP, I Am Very Far, and new songs from Country Mice, Ledbellies, and Eternal Summers.

“Benediction” Thurston Moore from Demolished Thoughts – out May 24th

“Wake and Be Fine”Okkervil River from I Am Very Far

“Cowboy and Indian”Ledbellies

“Morning Son” – Country Mice from Twister – out June 7th

“Cog” – Eternal Summers from Prisoner

Ming Ming

Lefse Records just sent us this somewhat dark, and at times, chaotic, instrumental track from Ming Ming‘s upcoming album, set to be released on June 28th. Also, check out Art Brut‘s “Lost Weekend,” the first track from their May 23rd album release Brilliant Tragic! The lead track is as menacing as its title, “Eater Of The Dead.” Plus, check out a fresh track from singer/songwriter John Lamanica and a lead single from an upcoming releases by Fan Modine.

“Eater Of The Dead” Ming Ming from TBA – June 28th

“Heartling” – John Lamanica from Volunteers

“Julu Road”Fan Modine from Gratitude for The Shipper – May 24th

Blithe Field, Ghostly Dust Machine, Virgin of the Birds

Blithe Field is Spencer Radcliffe – a 19 year old producer from Ohio, specializing in messy sample based electronic music. A label promoter said his sound is “like if Gold Panda ditched Ableton to record outdoors on an old sampler that didn’t work at speeds above 120 bpm.”

We’re definitely digging this first track, “Crushing” from Blithe Field’s debut album, Two Hearted, due out June 28th.

“Crushing”Blithe Field from Two Hearted

Bad Panda Records just sent in two new tracks – one from the classy down-tempo of the Ghostly Dust Machine project, inspired by Canadians J. Dilla, Nujabes and D.J. Krush, plus, a new track from Virgin of the Birds that has a 1960’s vibe that straddles  between lo-fi folk and the occasional grandeur of early art rock.

“Ode To A Baby Snowstorm” Ghostly Dust Machine

“Let Me Be Your Bride”Virgin Of The Birds

White Belt Yellow Tag, who are gearing up for their May 21st U.S. EP release,   You’re Not Invincible, won critical acclaim in the U.K. last year for their debut album featuring unashamedly big, anthemic, booming pop tunes mixed with their own brand of distorted, fuzzy rock. The band are often compared to The Doves.  The NME proclaimed White Belt Yellow Tag possess “the artistic solemnity of Elbow or Doves” and The Fly said “they are confident, moody, atmospheric and armed with glacial, killer tunes.”

“146 Ways To”White Belt Yellow Tag from You’re Not Invincible – May 21st

The group is now performing in China, an inspiring tale of western music traveling across the barriers of music and culture, similar to the story of western rock breaking through the Iron Curtain of Soviet Russia in the early 1970’s.

From the rising band, Tuneyards, founding member Pat Jordache has recorded a new album, Future Songs, that was just released two weeks ago. Here’s the lead single, “Phantom Limb,” which we already think might end up on one of our Halloween Mixtapes in just less than six months from now.

“Phantom Limb”Pat Jordache (Tuneyards) from Future Songs – April 26th

Plus, Oklahoma indie band Other Lives have presented a marvelously introspective, somewhat melancholy single that has been part of our in-cafe mixtape for the past few days. The song is the title track from Other Lives’ upcoming LP, Tamer Animals, set to officially drop on May 17th. The LP will be the band’s sophomore album on TBD Records, which released Other Lives’ official, self-titled debut in 2009. Check out an instrumental track from The Morning Birds that includes thunderclaps as percussion and the chant-sounding vocals of Thorington and Samuel Markus.

“For 12″ Other Lives from Tamer Animals

“Quickening”The Morning Birds

Buxter Hoot’n is an unsigned indie “roots rock” band from  San Francisco, California.  Buxter Hoot’n will release their third, self-titled album at the end of the month, and we have the lead single from it. The album displays the band’s “Americana roots, Rolling Stones’ swagger, pop sensibilities and honest lyricism,” according to their publicist.

Over the past five years, the band have opened for Jackie Green, Los Lobos, Builders and the Butchers, The Stone Foxes, The Devil Makes Three, and many others, and include among their top musical influences Bob Dylan and Allman Brothers.  Their sophomore album, In Another Life, debuted as the #5 most added album for the Americana Music Association in September and has remained on their charts every week since.

“Blue Night” – Buxter Hoot’n

Claiming to be the world’s first orchestrated rap record (hmmm, oil and water?), Chilly Gonzalez is prepping to release The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzalez on June 7th. Without going into more details, the following track features a medley of ‘songs’ from the album. The main reason we are featuring this is to see what people’s reaction is to this experimentation. We are fence-sitting, but if we were to pick one of the most daring and bizarre albums of the year, this would be up in the top of the list. Maybe we’ll do that – a playlist mix of the weirdest albums of 2011.

Fresh Tracks from Thom Yorke + Burial + Four Tet, Fleet Foxes, Cults, Thurston Moore, Surfer Blood, A Lull, Wild Beasts, Man/Miracle

thomyorke

Our new tracks in-box has been filling up fast lately. In fact, it’s overflowing. So, here’s another big mix featuring fresh tracks from a range of artists and bands, including Thom Yorke with Burial and Four Tet, Thurston Moore, Cults, Surfer Blood, A Lull, Zachary Cale, Wild Beasts, Teenage Atari Riot, Man/Miracle, and others. And, there’s a whole bunch more to come in next few weeks. As some of you probably know, we don’t do one-song posts. The reason is that there is so much music that we want to share with you.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke recently joined Four Tet and Burial to record two electronic house/dubstep tracks – “Ego” and “Mirror.” The tracks have been receiving a good amount of buzz in the past week, and we’re stoked to be able to bring them to you for your listening pleasure.

“Mirror”Thom Yorke + Burial + Four Tet

You can also purchase a copy of the vinyl 12″ via Four Tet’s label, Text Records. On Feb. 9th, Yorke performed a solo DJ set at Los Angeles club Low End Theory.  The video below is a slice of the evening’s events.

Lots of Buzz Around Upcoming Fleet Foxes Release

Since their 2008 break out EP and debut, self-titled album, Seattle based Fleet Foxes have become one of the most influential bands in the indie folk movement. The band likes to call their wonderful style of acoustic music and precious vocal harmonies, “”baroque harmonic pop jams.” Not sure about the jam part of that, but no doubt Fleet Foxes etched their success beyond the indie scene and into the popular culture.

preorderhelplessnessblues

Since 2008, fans have been waiting patiently for new material. As a result, there has been a long wait of anticipation for their sophomore album, Helplessness Blues, set for release on May 3rd. Not surprisingly, the album has already leaked, but we’re going to wait until the vinyl edition to come out because Fleet Foxes are definitely a band to be listened to on vinyl, thanks to their melodic mastery, mid-song tempo changes and intricate chord progressions. That said, we have found two tracks from Helplessness Blues that we’d like to present as a way to let their fans know that they will not be disappointed.

“The Plains/Bitter Dancer” – Fleet Foxes from Helplessness Blues – out May 3rd

“Grown Ocean”Fleet Foxes from Helplessness Blues – out May 3rd

You can pre-order Helplessness Blues via Amazon for either  CD or vinyl.  There is no MP3 pre-order that we know of available at the time this post was published.  On Record Store Day (April 16th), the band will release a limited edition 12″ vinyl of the single, “Helplessness Blues” with a B-side of “Grown Ocean.” Not surprisingly, almost all of Fleet Foxes’ scheduled shows for May have been sold out.

New Singles from Thurston Moore and Cults

Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore continues to reaffirm why he is one of alternative rock’s most prolific and influential figures. Matador Records sent us a new single from Moore to spread around. Gladly.  The song, “Benediction,” demonstrates, even more, Moore’s talent and ability to write and record stellar music. The song is mainly acoustic, and just really, well, superb. It is the first single from Moore’s upcoming Beck-produced, solo album, Demolished Thoughts, out May 24th. It is definitely one of our most anticipated albums of the spring.

“Benediction”Thurston Moore from Demolished Thoughts – out May 24th

Cults, one of our break-out bands of 2010, have just dropped a new track, “You Know What I Mean.” The advanced single will appear on Cults debut album, due out in May.

“You Know What I Mean” Cults

Surfer Blood’s Excellent ‘Lost’ Track

We’re a bit surprised that this unreleased track from Surfer Blood, “I’m Not Ready,” hasn’t appeared on more music sites or blogs. In fact, we talked to a few folks who love the band who were not aware of the track. The track is not on the band’s spectacular 2010 debut album, Astro Coast. “I’m Not Ready” is an upbeat, catchy song that definitely has post-punk and pop elements.  While the song is not exactly a fresh track – they performed it at shows all during 2010 –  it will be new enough to most people to seem like a fresh track. Also, “Weapons of War” is the excellent advance single from the upcoming A Lull LP of the same name. Plus, check out these fresh tracks from Skull Tape and Little Scream.

“I’m Not Ready” Surfer Blood

“Weapons of War”A Lull from Weapons for War single (with remixes)  – out April 19th

“Cannons” Little Scream from The Golden Record – our April 12th

“Trans Anthro” Skull Tape from The Invisible Hand and The Descent of Main – out April 12th

Brooklyn’s Zachary Cale Preps New LP and Introducing Les Blanks

Zachary Cale is a Brooklyn singer/songwriter and musician (who isn’t in Brooklyn?) who has made a name for himself in recent years thanks to his remarkable blues folk sound; “Hello Oblivion” is the first single from his upcoming new album due out in May.

“Hello Oblivion” – Zachary Cale from Welcome to Noise – May 15th

“Straw Man” is a new track of some good ole garage rock from an artist we never heard of before, Les Blanks. We’re going to resist jokes about his name, but let you know when we get around to hearing more of Blanks’ music. The track, “Straw Man,” is from the album In Country, set to drop on May 3rd.

“Straw Man”Les Blanks from In Country – out May 3rd

Wild Beasts, Teenage Atari Riot and Man/Miracle

Following on the success of their critically acclaimed and Mercury Prize nominated second album Two Dancers, the band Wild Beasts are preparing to unveil the next chapter in their career with the release of their new album, Smother on May 10th. The band have released the first single from the album, “Albatross,” a track washed with sonic layers and textures of abstract sounds combined to form something typically bold and unique.

“Albatross”Wild Beasts from Smother – out May 10th

Teenage Atari Riot sent over this new single, “Blood In My Eyes” as a teaser for the band’s forthcoming album, Is This Hyperreal?, set to be released this summer. The track is a riveting electronic punk rock diatribe, paying homage to the feminine retributive subtexts espoused by cult films like Kill Bill and heavily censored French art-house film Baise-Moi.

“Blood In My Eyes” Teenage Atari Riot from Is This Hyperreal?

Oakland indie rockers Man/Miracle have a fresh new track – a busy, pop masterpiece, “Don’t Waste It.” It’s a great follow-up to their 2010 blog hit, “Hot Sprawl,” off their debut The Shape of Things.

“Don’t Waste It” Man/Miracle
