London all-female band All Day Breakfast Cafe present their incredible 8-minute piece.

This composition, dedicated to two legendary music innovators, blends influences of funk and Afrobeat, the ‘70s vibe, and contemporary presets.

The nimble rhythms move from the Khruangbin-esque groove to dancey bass loops under the disco ball glow, meeting a variety of jazzy twists of the brass section and the psychedelic flute jam in the vein of Quintessence. With the third minute, the very pleasant, melodic vocals appear over guitar desert lounge.

“What If Nile Rodgers And Fela Kuti Were Friends” is saturated in a very surprising way, it’s a smooth and lively fusion.

Best 5 New 2021 DIY Song Submissions, Vol. III: Maquina Delirio, Rosesleeves, Breakup Films & More

Rolling right along with the best new DIY/indie tracks from our mailbox in this installment No. 3 of the Best New 2021 DIY Song Submissions, featuring artists and bands from Arizona to France, and Brazil to Israel. These are the best new DIY indie songs we’ve received via our mailbox.

Máquina Delírio is an indie DIY duo from Florianopolis, Brazil. The duo’s new EP has just landed and it’s an interesting listen with a wonderful mixing of genres and influences. The opening track, “Cetacea,” is gripping and seductive, as well as timely, considering this is the year of the cetacea’s return.

Delírio adds and it “counts with the very special participation of a humpback whale, who kindly sang in the chorus.”

The duo features Erica Jung on drums and effects and Ricardo Marcin on vocals and strings. They’ve been playing and crafting songs together for four years.

After countless metamorphoses, the duo finally decided to record some of their tracks. The EP was recorded DIY after ‘countless metamorphoses.’ Major musical influences include Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Girl Band, Latin Music, IDLES, The Oh Sees.

Rosesleeves – “Growing Pains”

Rosesleeves is a 17-year-old experimental pop artist and producer from Buckinghamshire, England.

He delves into the boundaries between indie, alternative, EDM, and pop to create unique tracks full of feeling that take interesting new turns on tracks like his latest single, “Growing Pains.” The ambient pop-leaning track, Patel says, is based on a painful breakup with his best friend.

His musical influences, he says, are FKA Twigs, Bon Iver, Shrimp, Radiohead, and Purity Ring — as well as his friends and frequent collaborators Ezekiel and Noahh. Patel has also previously joined forces with upcoming artists such as Osquinn (formerly known as P4rkr), Midwxst, and Suckerpunk to create tracks that have been enjoyed by many.

About the track, he says: “The song doesn’t waste a second and starts with delicate vocals glistening against unorthodox piano samples and synths that bursts into a flood of alluring textures; thunder respresenting the storm of the last few days of friendship.”

Breakup Films – “Just Whenever”

Breakup Films‘ new single, ‘Just Whenever,” according to frontman vocalist and guitarist Ron Herscovici, “is a melancholic party song, incorporating musical themes borrowed from disco, dream pop and emo into an energetic ghost train, aspiring to create an atmosphere you can both dance and dissociate to.” That’s actually a great description that is evident after listening to the track a couple of times.

Breakup Films is a Tel Avi-based young band that formed in 2019 and have now released the debut EP My Head Is Always Somewhere Else .

The band infuses reverb-filled textures with straightforward, indie pop songwriting and has gradually gained a steady fanbase across the globe and nearly a half-million streams.

Major musical influences include Turnover, DIIV, The 1975, Neck Deep, The Smiths. Other band members are Hai Barbi – guitar, Shelly Reizis – vocals & bass, Noam Debel – drums. The band was founded in 2019.

Clint Slate – “No Way Out”

The Paris-based indie musician Clint State has just released his latest single, “No Way Out.” The track blends a number of genres, including rock and folk, and is sweet and touching.

“Rock, pop, folk, electro and more fusion into a very personal recipe born out of guitar improvisations and spontaneous melodies,” Slate writes, adding that the new EP, The Silent Sea EP, “showcases a true team at work…to encapsulate all their influences and embark the listener on a unique and personal journey.”

Clint State was founded in 2015 after a Scottish nurse and a French musician meet by chance to write a song for a radio contest and things evolved from there. The duo’s musical influences are Queen, U2, Kate Bush, Clannad, NIN, among others. Clint Slate (vocals, instruments, production, songwriting) is backed by Iona James (vocals, piano, songwriting).

Victims of the New Math – “You’re Swimming”

The Phoenix-based lo-fi music of indie musician Thomas Young (vocals, guitars, bass and drums), aka Victims of the New Math, is greatly influenced by classic rock and indie rock, including artists like Guided By Voices, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and The Kinks. His memorable new single, “You’re Swimming,” is great for a summer afternoon.

The band writes about the track: “You’re Swimming’ is a song about trying to see the best in things, to have a better outlook. I tend to get bogged down in the melancholy, and really wanted to write something more positive and uplifting. It’s still got some melancholy, but it’s got a really encouraging message.

Young has been making music since his teenage years in the late 1980’s, and has been releasing music since 2006. Originally a duo, with Thomas being joined by his brother Joe, the band was formed with hopes of capturing the great AM rock sounds from their childhood. Never much for learning other people’s songs, the brothers almost immediately tried their hand at writing. And, with a few small gaps, pretty much never stopped.

His new album, Heading to the Suburbs, is out now.

Top 10 DIY Indie Songs, June 2021

We were late to put together this DIY indie songs playlists for the summer due to a number of reasons, including the fact that we received double as many submissions in the past three months than in half of the year last year.

We hope that you discover some great indie rock songs, artists, and bands. This playlist features Peach Tinted; Quicker; The Ampersands; Damian Quinones; Ross Adams; Full Disclosure; Waiting for the Sun; We Are Monroe; John Lion and Luciano D’Lux.

It’s really difficult to put the songs in the playlist into a #1 to #10 order; so we didn’t really try. The same is true with all of our Top 10 Indie Songs playlists, whether they be DIY-oriented or highlighting the best in ‘mainstream’ indie songs.

Best New 2021 DIY Song Submissions, Vol. II – Desperate Journalist, Lucid Express, New Math & more

As summer rolls along at a clip (like it always does), we’ve been listening to dozens and dozens of new DIY indie tracks sent in through our submission form. And as usual, we come across some really good ones that we are inclined to share with all of you. Some of these artists may not show up anywhere else on the blogosphere but that’s because we are able to detect talent and potential where the others can’t – which has been part of our brand since 2008.

This second volume of our favorite 2021 DIY Song Submissions features a bunch of noise rock, dream pop, shoegaze and more. (Please like and share if you dig).

Desperate Journalist – “Fault”

The fairly popular London-based indie/alt rock outfit Desperate Journalist belts out post-punk mixed with goth elements on the new track, “Fault,” in such a dreary and aggressive signal that it is borderline industrial rock/hardcore goth. And yet there is a gentle melancholy at play right along. Vocalist Jo Bevan’s vocals are fierce and firey, bursting with anxiety and fear.

The song’s lyrical content speaks to a situation in which the subject is basically about being stuck with bad decisions and not taking action to avoid bigger problems. Powerful shit.

Lucid Express – “Hotel 65”

Based in the precarious city of Hong Kong, five-piece indie rock band Lucid Express has dropped an impressive new single, “Hotel 65.”

It is the standout single so far from the band’s debut album dropped on July 16th via Kanine. The video for the song is described by the band as a collage of footage taken from the band’s travels in their native Hong Kong, as well as in Vietnam, Japan, the U.K. and the United States.”

“These flashes of scenery,” the band wrote, ” reflect the lyrical turns of the song, while being interspersed with the words themselves scrawled onto mirrors, notebooks and paper scraps.””

Shoegazed, fuzzy guitars wrapped around beautiful soft vocals make this dream-pop track one of the best of the summer so far.

New Math – “Lowe”

Multi-instrumentalist Chris Fish, aka New Math, busts out experimental shoegaze/noise pop to create blazing sonic artworks. This is on full display via his new album, Kudzu. If you’re a fan of experimental, noise pop or shoegaze, this is a place you may want to hang.

Fish, who is based in Seattle, picked the opening track, “Lowe,” as the first single from the album. The song, like the rest of the album, was and recorded during the quarantine “while I struggled with sobriety, the pandemic, and the collapse of society.”

“It’s not as depressing as it sounds,” he adds, ” I swear. The video is composed of edited stock footage, and I think it compliments the dreamy apocalyptic vibe.”

His solo ‘bedroom’ project began, he says, as “an acoustic drone experiment, Epigenesis (2013), and has since evolved into an experimental noise pop act [New Math].” Fish cites his top musical influences as My Bloody Valentine, Mclusky, and Kanye West.

Interestingly we also received a single the same week from the band Victims of the New Math. Stay tuned.

Don’t Connect – “Burning Rubber in the Sun”

We don’t know much about the mysterious artist behind Don’t Connect, but we do know a few things. His name is ‘Charlie,’ he’s based in London, and his new song “Burning Rubber in the Sun” is fire.

Preferring to let his music speak for itself, “Burning Rubber in the Sun,” is a chilled acoustic guitar-driven slow-burner that picks up with percussion and rhythm in the second half of the track, a transition assisted by some taping effects.

Despite providing any more details about himself, the ‘unknown artist’ did provide some insight about the song:

“‘Burning Rubber in the Sun’ is a song written to capture the feeling of summer, escapism and the ability to forget about everything going on in your life and just have a good time.”

Obscure Sound wrote: ” The one-minute mark unveils playful interaction among guitars, synths, and a dose of backing strings; the feeling here is quite fondly reminiscent of Beck.”

Don’t Connect is aiming to drop his debut album Running soon.

Burkini Beach – “Crying at the Soundtrack”

Berlin indie rock guitarist/vocalist Rudi Maier didn’t provide many details his new single, “Crying at the Soundtrack,” simply writing: “I wrote a song to remind of the downsides of touring, haha. Thought you might like it.”

We do but we might like it even more if a song description came along with it. (Artists should really understand that the chances of them being featured on blogs greatly increases when a real song description is included. It gives the blogger something to post and it provides context. Additionally, an artist is much more likely to connect to listeners by providing a ‘behind-the-scenes’ description of the song.)

Anyways, Maier’s band, Burkini Beach, record and tour with him in between his projects and side gigs touring with Thees Uhlmann and Emperor XX and Das Paradies. The band members include Emma Elisabeth Dittrich (vocals), Simon Frontzek (keys, bass), Franz Neugebauer (drums), Sönke Corpus (pedal steel).

Burkini Beach has opened for indie bands like Cigarettes After Sex and Warpaint and include among its top musical influences Purple Mountains, Mount Eerie, and Phoebe Bridgers. The band was founded in 2017.

The Flaming Lips’ ‘The Soft Bulletin Companion’

The Flaming Lips’ Soft Bulletin was a watershed moment for the Oklahoma City rock band. Released in 1999, it was a moment when the group essentially started all over again with something wholly new as they reacted to the death of Wayne Coyne’s father, as well as other deaths of loved ones experienced by longtime guitarist and keyboardist Steven Drozd. Dubbed by a few bold critics at the time as the Pet Sounds of the ’90s, their ninth studio record started to unlock a whole new level of festival audience far beyond what came before for the psychedelic weirdos from the Sooner State.

Frontman Wayne Coyne has often referred to rare Flaming Lips hits during past interviews as gifts from the “gods of music.” Concert staples such as “Do You Realize??” or the title track off 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots are moments when the gods bent down and tapped the band on the shoulder, said it was time, and rewarded the good work they had set up previously with the best tracks on The Soft Bulletin only three years before (“Race for the Prize” and “Waiting for a Superman”).

It’s abundantly clear that The Soft Bulletin Companion is a compilation of curios for diehard fans of a monumental album from early in the band’s nearly 40 years of existence. There are odd experiments, melodic dead ends, plenty of outtakes, prototype mixes, and everything in between on this 13-song collection originally intended by the band’s manager and Warner Bros. as a promo-only CD to pair alongside The Soft Bulletin. It’s seen new life this year during Record Store Day, and longtime fans of the band will take note of hearing rarities like the fuzzed, psychedelic rocker “The Captain,” which are a welcome sight on vinyl after years of being hard to find.

Also, it’s nice to hear a couple stereo versions of tracks from the endlessly curious 1997 experimental release Zaireeka (which, infamously, was ideally played from four separate CDs blasted in unison from different car sound systems). In other corners of the release, a Lips Mix of The Soft Bulletin’s “Buggin’” and an early mix of “The Spiderbite Song” both fall far short of the quality heard on the original Soft Bulletin classics.

The Soft Bulletin Companion’s early versions of “Slow Motion”and “Little Hands” are also not too bad, and remind you of the band’s songwriting chops during the period, with Coyne directing the band on the rough mix of the latter track. The Soft Bulletin still stands as a classic where the best of ’90s experimental rock and pop collided, and its companion piece does sit fairly comfortably in its long shadow. Seeking this one out as a chaser to another long sip on the Soft Bulletin vibe is the best way to experience it.

Alexis Marshall (Daughters) Debut Solo Album ‘House of Lull . House of When’

Imagine the scene: You’re in some smoky, crowded backroom speakeasy for an open mic poetry night. Most people performing do so in the way you’d expect—they shuffle up to the lonely microphone in the spotlight, tentatively read a poem or two that they’ve printed out, and then shuffle off again to a polite round of applause. And then, out of the shadows, a tattooed beatnik/Hare Krishna/Frank Booth hybrid walks onstage with a boombox. He sets it down and presses “play,” allowing a dystopian cacophony of industrial noise to fill the room. And then he—he being Alexis Marshall, the vocalist of uncompromising, cult-like Rhode Island noise rock outfit Daughters—starts shouting and ranting, bellowing the words of a lost soul, one forsaken by both God and the devil, one whose reality is entirely internal yet still reflects the turmoil raging incessantly and constantly in the ravaged world outside.

All of which is to say that House of Lull . House of When—Marshall’s debut solo album—sounds like the end of the world. It’s not one brought on by a Hollywood blockbuster-style disaster, however. Rather, this album’s nine tracks—all of which were essentially improvised in the studio with help from Daughters drummer Jon Syverson and Young Widows’ Evan Patterson—capture the collapse of modern industrialized society and the ravaging, fatal effects of the economic system that rules it. It’s not just capitalism’s destructive tendencies that this record depicts, though, but also the damaging effects of religion, and a more harrowing mental collapse.

On their own, devoid of the sinister, macabre soundscapes and post-apocalyptic atmosphere created by the music and Marshall’s unhinged delivery, it’s hard to know if these poems—for these are poems much more than lyrics—would stand their own. Opener “Drink From the Oceans Nothing Can Harm You” and the visceral descent into madness of “Religion as Leader” contain some riveting imagery, but they’re much enhanced by Marshall’s powerfully deranged delivery. Yet while there’s merit and substance to the words and imagery here—unlike, for example, the poetry by Touché Amoré frontman Jeremy Bolm (who has previously released poems by Marshall on his label, but whose poetry doesn’t really work on paper)—the arresting, atmospheric soundtrack certainly helps carry them further than they’d otherwise go. Whether that’s the buzzsaw frenzy of “Open Mouth,” the disturbed paranoia of “Hounds in the Abyss,” or the tormented ender “Night Coming.”

It’s an uneven listen, and its abrasive, experimental weirdness can be too overbearing (as on “It Just Doesn’t Feel Good Anymore”), but House of Lull . House of When is nevertheless a weird, wild ride worth experiencing at least once, even if that’s just to see whether you can make it all the way through.

ZZ Top Member Dusty Hill Dead at 72

ZZ Top bassist Joseph “Dusty” Hill, 72, has died.

Hill was the band’s bass player for more than 50 years. During his life, probably to his own surprise, he and his band mates became cultural and musical icons, even appearing in an episode of The Simpsons, television’s longest-running sitcom.

Band members Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard issued the following statement just a few hours ago:

“We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’

“You will be missed greatly, amigo.”

Earlier this month, Gibbons and Beard performed for the first time without Hill in more than 50 years. They stated that he had “to address a hip issue” although Hill was reportedly in more serious condition than the public was aware.

It’s important to note that ZZ Top absolutely helped influence the country alt. rock movement that continues to this day.

Best 2021 DIY Songs feat. Icarus Phoenix, Matthew McNeal, Ora Violet & others

We’ve been digging newly-discovered indie/DIY artists and bands for the past couple of weeks in dee mail (aka, via our submission box). Some fantastic rarely-heard songs have been on repeat here in the cafe. They include the following artists and bands you need to hear. Please like, follow, and share to encourage highlighting talented, unstated musicians and bands, especially at a time when the already difficult situation for DIY artists has been exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. Icarus Phoenix – “All The Same”

Provo-based indie artist Icarus Phoenix hit our inbox with this sweet folk-rock track, “All The Same.” The music conveys a certain urgency but in much calmer tones than one would otherwise expect. A somber underbelly is delivered through textured notes and vocals.

The prolific Utah musician behind the moniker is Drew Danburry, a musician, filmmaker, animator, dad/husband, skateboarder, and barber. His new single is accompanied by a video of his own animation using hand-drawn index cards. That said, Danburry expresses angst at the difficulties of daily life these days, singing: “When I find myself in suffering/when I find myself in pain // Am I guilty of dishonor? Can I find another way?”

Since 2002, Danburry has performed more than 800 shows worldwide and dropped 20 albums and 13 E.P.s. “All the Same” is off of the forthcoming second album via his Icarus Phoenix moniker. The album, ‘No Tree Can Grow to Heaven Unless Its Roots Reach Down to Hell’ is available on tape and digital.

Matthew McNeal – “Tired of Believing”

With warm 1970’s vibes, relaxing instrumentation, and soft vocals, Fort Worth-based singer/songwriter Matthew McNeal‘s “Tired of Believing” is one of the most touching DIY singles of the summer. McNeal is an alluring songwriter with a knack for existential pondering.

After teaming up with Joey McClellan (BNQT, Israel Nash) and McKenzie Smith (Midlake, St. Vincent) for his 2015 release ‘Compadre’, McNeal and company aim to “bring an unorthodox feel to their music, pushing poetic storytelling forward atop a range of musical genres. ”

Ora Violet – “Have You Met Me”

The talented London indie/alt. rock band Ora Violet has been pumping out a series of strong tracks since forming a couple of years ago and getting airplay and reviews in various blogs and zines. The band’s newest single, “Have You Met Me,” is a testament to the band’s rising profile. Ora Violet was even publicly lauded by The Strokes’ producer Gordon Raphael.

Ora Violet fuses rock influenced by bands like Raconteurs and Queens of the Stone Age with early 1970’s proto-punk in the vein of bands like The Stooges and The Modern Lovers. The duo is comprised of multi-instrumentalist production duo Black Tiles and guitarist Nick Ferman.

About the song (from the writer/band): “Influenced by Grinderman, Elizabeth Wurtzel, Marmaduke Duke & Ernest Hemingway, the song was inspired by the realization that the same way we go down, we come back up; gradually and then suddenly. The antihero protagonist has lived a life of unapologetic excessive in all ways and despite nearing the end, the statement is clear… I won’t go down.”

Vocalist Jeet Mulkerj and bassist Adam Liston also contributed to the song.

The Slow Glow – “Loco”

Stockholm lo-fi indie rock one-man band, Diego Garcia – who records as The Slow Glow – is also a multi-instrumentalist. His new single, “Loco,” is something to behold.

“‘Loco’ means many things in Spanish; it means ‘crazy’ but also ‘dude’ in certain parts of Latin America,” Garcia wrote to IRC. “I wrote and recorded the song in one go one afternoon in my living room as a sort of mantra for myself and it’s the song that got me signed to Lacreu Records, an independent cassette label based in Barcelona, Spain. I think right about now we could use some calming down.”

The Swedish-based Venezuelan-born musician’s influences include King Krule, The Beach Boys, Lou Reed, Mac DeMarco, Blood Orange, and Homeshake. He plays guitar, fake bass, snare drum, and synths.
Garcia toured for several years under the Hotel moniker and released three EPs.

The Red Curtain Affair – “We’re All in the Same Boat”

Another multi-instrumentalist featured in this post is The Red Curtain Affair, a project of London musician Alexander Tarel. His new single, “We’re All in the Same Boat” showcases his fusion of unique funky rock with spices from world music. Tarel’s musical influences include The Smiths, The Cure, and Jimi Hendrix.

Tarel’s song description: “A feel-good U.K. indie rock song with rather depressing lyrics, a funky baseline to dance to, and a virtuoso guitar solo written in a dream.”

We're All In The Same Boat

Thom Yorke releases slowed-down, eerily-different remix of “Creep”

Indie rock trailblazing artist Thom Yorke has released an interesting remix of the epic Radiohead indie song, “Creep” originally dropped for a fashion show in Japan earlier this year.

Yorke took his landmark hit single and made it a little bit different, slowing down the acoustic version of the track, adding some eerie synths, and expanding it from just under four minutes to a total of nine minutes.

The remix is accompanied by a wild new music video by Jun Takahashi.

Earlier this year, Yorke unveiled a new band project, The Smile, along with Johnny Greenwood and Semi of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. The singer also announced the partnership with longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.

Radiohead, along with other Oxford music groups such as Foals, Glass Animals and Supergrass, was recently sponsored by local music magazine Nightshift and raised £ 12,000. They produced “Kid A” vinyl records and financial programs for bands who are struggling to recover following the pandemic.

R.E.M. releases original recording of early B-side ‘Sitting Still’

As a part of their ongoing 40th-year celebration, R.E.M. has unveiled the Hib-Tone version of “Sitting Still,” that fans might recall is the B-side to the band’s 1983 debut single “Radio Free Europe.”

Hib-Tone is the Atlanta-based indie record label that originally released “Radio Free Europe” (a reissue was released last May) and “Sitting Still” in 1981.

In 1983, both tracks appeared on the college-rock favorites’ debut album, Murmur, via I.R.S. Records.

Above is the original 1981 version of “Sitting Still,” – offered digitally for the first time.

In a couple of weeks, R.E.M. will reissue their first single as a 7-inch via Craft Recordings. Likewise, R.E.M.’s 1981 demo tape — ‘Cassette Set’ — is going to be offered in limited quantities for the first time ever via the official R.E.M. store as a bundle with the 7-inch.

“We were all just kind of finger-painting,” Mitch Easter, who produced “Radio Free Europe,” told Rolling Stone in May. “They weren’t super-deliberate about anything. I loved that about the sessions. Even when we did the LPs, nobody was really taking any orders from anybody. There might have been people advising R.E.M. on the business end of things, to do this, that, or the other. but they pretty much ignored all of them.”

Watch sand form into geometric patterns based solely on frequency.

This is amazing, and hard to really decipher. There are secrets, or ‘mysteries’, of the universe that we humans do not understand, and many of them involve sound: energy, frequencies, and vibrations.

Tesla, the master of energy, once said: “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”

This first experiment is more specifically called UV Sand Resonance.

As this experiment cymatics demonstrates – and one which has been replicated many times; even by the skeptical – placing sand on a plate, and using a tone generator, will create perfect geometric shapes.

Why the sand reacts geometrically perfect in response to the frequencies – where vibrations emulate, and where they do not – is a mystery in the larger calculation. A secret of the universe.

From the experimentors: “So this experiment is the Chladni plate experiment. I used a tone generator, a wave driver (speaker), and a metal plate attached to the speaker. First, add sand to the plate then begin playing a tone. Certain frequencies vibrate the metal plate in such a way that it creates areas where there is no vibration. The sand “falls” into those areas, creating beautiful geometric patterns. As the frequency increases in pitch, the patterns become more complex.”

Sons Of Zoku – Sacred

Australian psych quintet Sons Of Zoku launches a mind-bending single from the forthcoming debut album, “SUN.”

“Sacred” is modern raga rock music with a colorful transcendental sound, filled with Indian esotericism and the cosmic flux of light. The sitar passages massage the acupuncture points of your consciousness, pacifying it, while a pretty nimble rhythm section helps the body to tune in. The lyrics of “Sacred” also seem to describe the leap-learning into the depth of yourself. The vocals complement the composition with gentle mantra-like lines, and all together it embodies an excellent sedative summer sound. “Sacred” is a noteworthy and diverting work for sitar-driven journey-psychedelia.
