Vineyard Fest Was Coachella’d for All Points West Festival

The organizers of Coachella, Goldenvoice/AEG Live, announced a few weeks ago the formation of a new east coast major music festival, dubbed “Coachella East”.

The festival, now officially the All Points West Festival (Aug. 8-10), just released the lineup – including Radiohead , Underworld, Cat Power, Jack Johnson, Black Kids, CSS, Animal Collective (shown below), Andrew Bird, Metric, The Go! Team, Rodrigo Y Gabriel, The New Pornographers, Kings of Leon and many others.

Some festival fans in the New York City metro area (which includes the venue location of Jersey City – just across the river from lower Manhattan – with amazing views of the city and Statue of Liberty) are calling a coup of the historically annual Vineyard Festival.

Vineyard has been cancelled because it was Coachella’d from Liberty State Park (photo; bottom left) until 2009.

From a money-making and fan-demand perspective, it only makes sense to create a “Coachella East” based on the enormous success of the famous west coast, three-day outdoor camping Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the desert of Indio, California (read the latest on Coachella lineup, tickets and breaking news), which has attracted some of the biggest names of indie and mainstream rock for the past half decade.

Apparently, the announcement of ‘Coachella East’ by Goldenvoice/AEG Live effectively forced Vineyard promoters Festival Republic and C3 Productions (who also produce Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Glastonbury and others) to cancel the Vineyard Music Festival for 2008.

Perhaps more telling is the fact that ‘Coachella East’ was in the works for months now, and through the online rumor mill was scheduled a couple of months ago – deliberately or not – on the very same dates as Vineyard, August 8 to August 10.

Among many speculators, Rolling Stone magazine recently reported – incorrectly – the dates of the Vineyard Music Festival, or ‘Coachella East’ would be August 10-12, 2008.

“We had to get our egos in check and say, ‘Let’s do [sic] the smart decision, get off these dates and go for an isolated (date) so we can build this thing without having to look over our shoulders,”‘ C3 partner Charles Attal said.

“We don’t want to be compared to all the other festivals and who’s playing where. We want to build this thing right, organically from the ground up.”

Organically? Ticket prices for a single day pass are $89 a pop. Three-day passes sell at a hefty $258, plus Ticketmaster’s ridiculous fees (but they are the sole distributor of the tickets; Coachella organizers, along with Goldenvoice/AEG Live, must have a deal with Ticketmaster on both coasts it appears.

While the tickets don’t go on sale until Feb. 29 at noon EST, the following fees have been added to tickets for Coachella West (not including the $55 camping fee):

Convenience charge: $22.20
Building facility charge: $12.00

(These do not include whatever other fees, such as delivery and such, are added when tickets go on sale. Note: Opt for the $2.50 online tickets to print when you want).

Flashback: Thank goodness to Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam (photo; bottom, right) for taking a stand against Ticketmaster’s exorbitant fees and services charges more than a decade ago, even though they knew it would mean losing millions of dollars. Now that’s putting your money where your mouth is.

Check out this rare 2003 RS interview in which Vedder talks for the first time in a long time about the Ticketmaster fight that left some fans bitter and caused others to entrench deeper with the band).

Bonnaroo Announces Line-up of Artists and Ticket Sale Date

There is so much music festival news coming out right now that it’s like trying to watch three horses races at once.

To some people it may seem early in the year to be planning for summer rock festivals, but just the opposite is true. This is the time.

In the case of the south’s popular Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, plenty of music fest fans have been holding their breath waiting for ticket and artist line-up news. Bonnaroo 2008 has been set to take place June 12-15.

Breaking now: Bonnaroo tickets are set to go on sale Feb. 19, 2008 at 10 a.m. EST and the first list of confirmed artists has just been issued.

Someone should write a song to this next block of text (the challenge is on) and put it on YouTube or wherever.

Anyways, artists from the official line-up that are linked are artists that have been featured on this blog and those in bold print are artists I like and plan to write about soon. Regretably, I must admit, like any music blogger, there are probably excellent artists in the line-up that I have yet to discover.

Artists listed in bold are artists and groups that will be featured in the weeks to come.

Official Bonnaroo Fest line-up (no times yet)

Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Phil Lesh & Friends, My Morning Jacket, The Allman Brothers Band, The Raconteurs, Willie Nelson, Death Cab for Cutie, B.B. King, Sigur Rós , Levon Helm and the Ramble on the Road, Ben Folds, O.A.R., The Bluegrass Allstars Feat. Luke Bulla, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Bryan Sutton, M.I.A., Umphrey’s McGee, Iron & Wine, Yonder Mountain String Band, Swell Season, Talib Kweli, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi’s Soul Stew Revival, Gogol Bordello, Broken Social Scene (pictured at right), Robert Randolph’s Revival, Rilo Kiley, Mastodon, Lupe Fiasco, Against Me!, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Pat Green, Ozomatli, Tegan & Sara

Solomon Burke, Drive-By Truckers, !!!, The Avett Brothers, Israel Vibration, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet featuring Bela Fleck, Larry Campbell, Jackie Greene, Aimee Mann, Ladytron, The Fiery Furnaces, Orchestra Baobab, Ghostland Observatory, José González, Dark Star Orchestra, Minus the Bear, Donavon Frankenreiter, State Radio, Battles, Jakob Dylan, Two Gallants, The Sword, Vampire Weekend, Little Feat, Nicole Atkins, The Felice Brothers, Mason Jennings, MGMT, The Lee Boys, Black Kids, Serena Ryder, Steel Train, Grupo Fantasma, Back Door Slam.

The folks at Bonnaroo have yet to release the schedule, times and stages for where and when the artists will be playing, but stay tuned and the details will be posted as soon as they are available.

During the next few months, there will be more profiles published of artists appearing at various festivals around the world in 2008.

The following MP3s are from three indie outfits scheduled to place this year:

Vampire Weekend – Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

Iron & Wine – Boy With A Coin

Ladytron – AMTV

IRC MP3 Policy: All MP3s are for evaluation and to help promote the artists. MP3s featured on this site are the property of their owner. If any musicians or labels want a particular MP3 removed, please contact me and it will be done immediately.

The Low-Down on Coachella: Tickets, Maps and Where To Sleep

When single-day tickets for Coachella 2008 went on sale two weeks ago, they were gone in a matter of hours.

But there’s hope, if you’re willing to throw it down.

For folks only interested in single-day tickets, competitive bidding is underway on eBay, and for sale on Craigslist. Of course you can expect people to hold out in posting for sale their tickets until closer to the festival opening day (April 24).

Even in a recession, people will decide to go at the last minute and shell out for the so-called ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience of Coachella (even though logic says it’ll be around for years to come).

If you simply cannot find, or do not want to pay the inflated prices for single tickets, I strongly recommend getting a three-day pass now before they sell out. It is a pisser that the three-day passes are a ridiculous $269 each.

Nevertheless, once they are gone for the official price, they will be much more valuable in the next couple of months.

Also, when you are buying the three-day pass from the official website, you have the option to add the flat fee of $55 for a three-day camp site, if they are still available. Campsites, because they are reasonably priced (but have many restrictions and security), also usually sell out quickly.

MP3s of Artists Performing at Coachella 2008:

Portishead – “Kissing The Day
My Morning Jacket – “Strangulation”
Animal Collective – “Bees”

A big part for this is because the average hotel room in the area, if you can find one at this point goes for almost $300 a night right now. As the scalpers do, hotels will take advantage of ‘last minuters’ and block out a set of rooms so that in the days leading up to the opening of the festival they can sell them for twice as much.

Here’s Coachella 2008’s complete line-up of confirmed artists. Check out the line-up, dates and poster.

Head’s up: Rooms in the Indio area are almost gone. See map of town with accommodations listed and a map of the region.

Best Indie and Alternative Rock Songs of 2007

Despite the fact that it is somewhat pretentious and plain nutty to say that any one song was the “best song of 2007”, there are still dozens of music websites, news and entertainment organizations and blogs that are relentless in their self-righteous pursuit to announce to the world ‘2007’s best song!’

Beyond that, to assemble a top songs list in order of No.1 to No. 20, for example, is literally impossible and disingenuous, especially when there are thousands of great songs that come out each year, most of which never get air play, except on blogs and sites like this one and an occassional radio station, usually college radio. More Great Songs from 2007, Playlist Three

Some rock critics argue that 2007 was not a great year for music.

Maybe that’s because many of them don’t listen to, or appreciate, independent and alternative rock. There are plenty of excellent songs from 2007.

Here is IRC’s third installment of “Great, Best, Favorite Songs” from 2007:

Add Your Light To Mine Baby – Lucky Soul

After Nearly Two Years On The Road, The Fray Jump Out

While this blog is primarily focused on independent and alternative music, there are some mainstream bands that are too talented to ignore and who somehow seem to transcend all of the trappings that normally taint once-indie bands that ‘crossover’.

mp3: Heaven Forbid – The Fray
mp3:
How To Save A Life – The Fray

According to The Fray’s official website, the Denver-based band are taking time off after nearly two years on the road. A new full-length release is expected this some time in mid-2008.

The Fray’s 2003 independent debut EP Reason has been re-released. The new ‘digitally-enhanced’ re-issue of Reason includes all of the recordings not found on their 2006 double-platinum, worldwide blockbuster How to Save a Life.

There are some videos, photographs and an online journal of the band’s time on the road, but on the whole, considering the ‘fame’ of the band, their website offers surprisingly little for fans.

You’d think Sony/Epic would put some of its immense resources into creating a website that would at least make an attempt to ‘wow’ fans. There’s not even one MP3 offered on the studio’s Fray page, but if you sign-up for the mailing list from their ‘official’ website, you apparently get one free download. Whoopie! (play smack audio clip here)

But that website is on the U.K. domain system because both Fray.com and more importantly, thefray.com, are taken. Apparently the owner of the latter was either never offered any money for the domain or is holding out.

So, here are some other Fray websites:

MySpace – The Fray
AllMusic – The Fray
Facebook’s iLike – The Fray

Coachella 2008 Official Line-Up Includes Roger Waters, Portishead, DCFC, Shout Out Louds, My Morning Jacket

Organizers of the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have released the official line-up for this year’s event, slated for April 25-27, 2008.

Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters, Kraftwerk, Portishead, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Love and Rockets, Spiritulalized, Hot Chip, Madness and Fatboy Slim are just some of the headliners for the three-day music fest and art show. Nothing that great really.

Here is the full line-up in its entirety:

April 25 – Jack Johnson, the Verve, the Raconteurs, the Breeders, Fatboy Slim, Tegan and Sara, Madness, the Swell Season, the National, Animal Collective, Slightly Stoopid, Mum, Pendulum, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Stars, Battles, Aesop Rock, Midnight Juggernauts, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Minus the Bear, Spank Rock, Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobies Pip, Diplo, Adam Freeland, Santo Gold, Jens Lekman, the John Butler Trio, Vampire Weekend, Dan Deacon, Architecture in Helsinki, Sandra Collins, Busy P, Cut Copy, Black Lips, Datarock, Professor Murder, Reverend and the Makers, the Bees, Porter, Rogue Wave, Modeselektor, American Bang and Lucky I Am.

April 26 – Portishead, Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie, Cafe Tacuba, Sasha & Digweed, Rilo Kiley, M.I.A., Dwight Yoakam (this year’s token country act, also appearing at Stagecoach the following weekend), Hot Chip, Cold War Kids, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, DeVotchKa, Flogging Molly, Mark Ronson, Turbonegro, Scars on Broadway, Islands, Enter Shikari, Calvin Harris, Boyz Noise, Junkie XL, Cinematic Orchestra, Jamie T, the Teenagers, VHS or Beta, Carbon/Silicon, Erol Alkan, Yo Majesty!, Bonde Do Role, St. Vincent, Akron Family, MGMT, Institubes DJs, Surkin, Para One and Orgasmic, James Zabiela, Sebastian, Kavinsky, Dredg, the Bird and the Bee, Grand Ole Party, New Young Pony Club, 120 Days, Yoav, Eletric Touch and Uffie.

April 27 – Roger Waters, Love and Rockets, My Morning Jacket, Spiritualized, Justice, Gogol Bordello, Chromeo, the Streets, Metric, Simian Mobile Disco, the Horrors, Danny Tenaglia, Booka Shade, Murs, Dimitri from Paris, Autolux, the Field, Linton Kwesi Johnson (in a spoken-word appearance), Les Savy Fav, the Cool Kids, Sons and Daughters, Sia, Black Kids, Black Mountain, the Annuals, Kid Sister with A-Trak, Man Man, Duffy, I’m From Barcelona, Manchester Orchestra, Deadmaus, Austin TV, Shout Out Louds, Plasticenes and Brett Dennen.

Favorite or "Best" Songs of 2007, Playlist II

The focus of this series remains fixed on talented, original and under-rated independent music, especially that which rises to the level of the famous blogger buzz.

However, there are some entries in this series that feature mainstream artists. Nevertheless, they are often not artists that are not household names, and I’m always good with that. I guess the best artists fail when they ‘sign over’, like Taking Back Sunday and The Decemberists.

IRC’s own ‘Favorite Indie and Alternative Songs of 2007’ series includes songs that are not found on many site’s lists of lists for best music of 2007 (to be published later) low).

However, there is no ranking of songs. That’s up to all of you, who are best critics. There are definitely songs from 2007 that I haven’t heard that would otherwise be on published on IRC’s ‘best songs of 2007’ playlists.

IRC’s Favorite Songs of 2007 – Playlist Two

I’m Home – Starlet

It Ends Tonight – All American Rejects

7 Stars – Apples in Stereo

Milk – Magpie

Spitting Venom – Modest Mouse

DdiamondD – Panda Bear

Powerlines – Western States of Motel

Arctic Monkey’s Newest Video, Upcoming DVD of Manchester Show and Rare Booklet of the Band

Arctic Monkeys, riding high on the success of their latest album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and their new single “Teddy Picker” (video below), are resting up following a nearly non-stop touring schedule in 2007.

Last month, the band launched a 11-day, seven-show sold-out concert tour of the U.K. and the Netherlands. The tour extended from Dec. 4 to Dec. 15 with the final show of 2007 performed at Manchester’s Apollo Theatre.

For hard-core fans, you may be interested to know that Warped Films – which has produced some wildly successful British film since 2003, including Dead Man’s Shoes and This is England – was at the Apollo filming the show. The “theatrical” DVD special is expected to be released in the spring.

Warped also filmed Arctic Monkey’s short film Scummy Man.

By the way, after much searching, I was able to get my hands on an exclusive and rare print (handed out at the shows in December) of the Arctic Monkey’s “Christmas special” with Big Issue magazine.

The spread includes many photos of the usually shy band members and an extensive article.

“Teddy Picker” video – released Dec. 31, 2007

Teddy Picker Lyrics

They’ve sped up to the point where they provoke
The punchline before they have told the joke
Plenty of desperation to be seen
Staring at the television screen

They’ve sped up to the point where they provoke
You to tell the f**king punchline before you have told the joke
Sorry sunshine it doesn’t exist
It wasn’t in the top 100 list

And it’s the thousandth time that it’s even bolder,
Don’t be surprised when you get bent over,
They told ya,but you were dying for it

She saw it and she grabbed it and it wasn’t what it seemed
The kids all dream of making it, whatever that means
Another variation on a theme
A tangle on the television and the magazine
D’you reckon that they do it for a joke?
D’you reckon that they make ’em take an oath?
That says “we are defenders
[Teddy Picker lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Of any poseur or professional pretender around”

When did your list replace the twist and turn
like a fist replaced a kiss, don’t concern us with your bollocks
I don’t want your prayers
Save it for the morning after

And it’s the thousandth time and it’s even bolder,
Don’t be surprised when you get bent over,
They told ya, but you were gagging for it

Lets have a game on the Teddy Picker
Not quick enough can I have it quicker?
Already thick and you’re getting thicker
Lets have a game on the Teddy Picker
Not quick enough can I have it quicker?
Already thick and you’re getting thicker

Assuming that all things are equal,
Who’d want to be men of the people
When there’s people like you?
