Summer Indie Playlist, Vol. II: Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Oberhofer, Damien Jurado

A few weeks ago, to kick-off the Memorial Day holiday, we launched our first summer mixtape of 2010. Due to the huge success of that mix, we started work on putting together Mix No. 2 shortly thereafter – and here are the results (work on Mix No. 3 is already in progress). Obviously, these summer mixtapes are not restricted to indie rock (whatever that is to you).

Great Indie Cover Songs Uncovered: Radiohead, The Morning Benders, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Ruby Isle, Deer Tick, Jens Lekman

Everybody likes a good cover song. They are coming out all of the time, but only receive scattered coverage on blogs and mainstream music websites. Our approach has been to build up a solid mix of indie cover songs over time, and publish them in less frequent, but more extensive, playlists.

There are some terrific cover songs from Cymbals Eat Guitars of an Elliott Smith classic, indie folksters Deer Tick covering a Rolling Stones’ oldie; Jens Lekman of Paul Simon; Radiohead covering Neil Young; Ruby Isle’s
interpretation of The Decemberists’ “The Rake Song”; and The Morning Benders tearing a page from the 80s to cover The Smiths.

“On The Beach” (Neil Young) Radiohead

“I Won’t Share You (The Smiths) The Morning Benders

“Ballad of Big Nothing” (Elliott Smith) – Cymbals Eat Guitars

“The Rake Song” (The Decemberists) Ruby Isle

“Across The Universe” (The Beatles) Rufus Wainwright

“Dead Flowers” (The Rolling Stones) Deer Tick

“You Can Call Me Al” (Paul Simon) Jens Lekman

“Dedicated To The One I Love” (The Shirelles) The Bromheads

“I Shall Be Released” (Bob Dylan) Jeff Tweedy

Local Natives Voted ‘Break-Out’ Band of 2010 (So Far), followed by Surfer Blood, Sleigh Bells, Crystal Castles and Neon Indian

localnativesband

In a tally of 1,000 unique* votes from IRC readers and visitors, the California indie rock band Local Natives beat out a bunch of other bands for ‘Break Out’ Artist of 2010 (So Far). Approximately 23% of poll participants selected Local Natives out of 10 pre-selected artists. The runner up, for Florida ‘beach rock’ sensation Surfer Blood, placed a distant second with 13.7%. The dynamic musical duo Sleigh Bells garnered 13.2%, and Canada’s Crystal Castles – another duoand Brooklyn electro-haze pop artist, Neon Indian, pretty much tied (CC taking it by one vote) to round out the Top 5.

“Sun Hands” – Local Natives

“Catholic Pagans” Surfer Blood

Sleigh Bells is often categorized as a noise pop electronica duo, but their music is more intricate than that.

Derek E. Miller, a singer, guitarist and producer, met vocalist Alexis Krauss while he was waiting tables in a Brooklyn Brazilian restaurant, happened to mention he was looking for female vocalist, and poof, the duo formed, and since last fall’s CMJ in New York have been on fire.

Sleigh Bells released their debut album, Treats, in May 2010.

While we completely agree with people who say that Crystal Castles do not really qualify as a ‘break out’ artist of 2010 (they released a number of lo-fi EPs between 2006 to present day.

“Celestica” –  (Thurston Moore Remix) – Crystal Castles

However, it is safe to say that Crystal Castles have really broken through in the second half of 2009 and especially in 2010, making the cover of top music magazines (see NME cover to right), the praise of bloggers, and most importantly, a swell of new fans worldwide that are turning on to Crystal Castles every day.

Somewhat surprisingly, the five artists who received the lesser number of votes out of 1,001 total votes include some of most talked about bands at SXSW this past March, and CMJ last fall, most notably Free Energy and Real Estate.

We’re not sure what it means that Real Estate only garnered 4% of the total vote and placed last. Even with the consideration that some people may only consider Real Estate as a ‘break out’ band of 2009, however, the same could arguably said for Local Natives and Surfer Blood – all three bands basically hit the radars at the same time, give or take a few months.

“Dream City” Free Energy
“Beach Comber”Real Estate

Ever since SXSW, many of the artists included in the poll have enjoyed widespread approval, sold out shows, bill-sharing with major artists, and frequent coverage in the mainstream music press and the so-called ‘blogosphere’. We’re not asserting that these are scientific polls, but they are interesting and do provide a window through which to get a sense of which artists are creating the most buzz across the indie music landscape in 2010.

With all that considered, we’ve create a ‘part two’ of the same poll but this time featuring ten other artists, not ‘radar’ bands or ‘bands to watch’, per se.  You can see and vote in this new poll located in the right column of this page.

If you feel like you have missed out on any music so far in 2010, we’ve got you covered. You can easily stream and download 2010 songs in various sections of the IRC website, including Best New Releases (a weekly review of the best releases with accompanying free and legal MP3s), Recent Releases We Almost Missed, One Man Bands, Top 10 (for all weeks of 2010), the popular In Dee Mail series, and much more.

Thanks to everyone who voted in this revealing poll; here are the complete poll results:

Recent Releases We Almost Missed, VIII: Vita Ruins, Lou Barlow, Communist Daughter, Cary Ann Hearst, Apollo Ghosts, Holy Ghost

The Vita Ruins, an indie band from Washington D.C, was founded by Tim Kratzer and Greg Balleza in 2005. The band’s debut album, A Day Without A Name, features an unique and intriguing mix of dark, layered rock blended with romping electronica beats.

Following the release of their debut EP last year, the band attracted a following of fans, and soon were opening for artists like KENNA, VHS or Beta, Snowden and Malajube. We’ve listened to this song over and over – it’s terrific.

There is no excuse for us missing this awesome new EP from Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh), but we did, so if you’re a Lou Barlow fan, apologies. Barlow’s solo EP, Sentridoh III, was released last week, and it sounds so good. The track here, “Loserscore” is really a terrific rock song. Not long ago the legendary rocker told NME that indie rock is so interesting because it incorporates every possible genre and era of music, and that musicians nowadays have so much source material to work with. And they know that, and are drawing from everything – punk, classic rokc, disco, grunge, folk and so on.

Minneapolis folk rock band Communist Daughter, led by the bearded (beards seem to be ‘the thing’ of indie rockers nowadays) singer and guitarist Johnny Solomon, released their debut album in April; it’s a feast of upbeat, Beach Boys era harmonies, lo-fi, folky rock with contrasting lyrics about the pitfalls of life – loss, daily struggles and a ripe bit of cynicism.

“Not The Kid” Communist Daughter from Soundtrack to the End – April 6th

Apollo Ghosts are a Vancouver based three-piece indie rock band whose journey began with renting out a small recording studio in 2008, where they embraced a ritual of practice, record, go to a show, eat, sleep, and repeat for months. Their dedicated lead to two widely praised EPs released in 2009, Hasting Sunrise and Forgotten Triangle. Influential blogger Ryan Catbird hailed the EPs as his “favorite thing to listen to all throughout the year” and Exclaim Magazine said the band’s music was “criminally under-hyped.”

In March, the band released their debut LP, Mount Benson. The lead single “Things You Go Through” is catchy and laden with choruses of the title again and again – very much sounds like a 1990’s indie rock pop song – and it’s a song that’ll be hard to get out of your head, so beware.

“Things You Go Through” Apollo Ghosts from Mount Benson – March 30th

Cary Ann Heart‘s track “Hell’s Bells” romps forward out of the gates of hell straight for the jugular in
the first seconds of the song, with it’s stomp-like percussions, reminiscent of the beast slowly walking towards you – and Dead Weather-like biker bar bravado, plus lyrics as gritty as the song itself: “Cocaine makes you grind your teeth out” and “You were leaning on me/I heard you asking for it.”

“Hell’s Bells” is a vicious, in-your-face and totally awesome cut; production-wise it sounds like it was recorded in a big empty kitchen, and although they are drumsticks smashing together, it sounds like those wooden cooking spoons banging on an overturned crock pot – all very lo-fi and raw. “Hell’s Bells” – obviously not the classic AC/DC song by the same name – reminds us a lot of another track that came out recently (not by Dead Weather) – but we still can’t think of the name of the mystery song or the artist. It’s a new artist that are on blogger radars; it’s driving us nuts not being able to spit up the artist or song name. Damn you info-overloaded brain matter! Can anyone help?

Best New Releases This Week: Teenage Fanclub, Here We Go Magic, Villagers, Suckers, Deer Tick, Nada Surf, Light Pollution, Ratatat

Music lovers have many choices this week as far as new releases go. It’s a quite compelling selection spanning the spectrum of indie music, including anticipated releases from veteran and new indie rock artists.  As we do every week, we’ve picked our favorite new releases which include Here We Go Magic, Teenage Fanclub, Villagers, Suckers, Ariel Pink, Deer Tick, Nada Surf, Yo La Tengo,  Ratatat, Blitzen Trapper, BLK JKS, The Moondoggies, The Dig, Light Pollution, Casiokids and The Wailing Wall. Also, see details below about how to enter to win a CD of The Marching Band’s new album, Pop Cycle.

One of our favorite 1990’s pop bands, Teenage Fanclub, return to their roots with the release of their new album, Shadows. Teenage Fanclub broke through in Glasgow during the C86 (a collection of post punk music that was distributed underground on cassette tapes during the late 80’s and early 1990’s, mostly in the UK) craze, eventually transforming from a noisy and rough sound to a more cheerful, harmonic and melody lush pop, drawing comparisons with The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Neil Young and even Big Star.

As surprising as it may be to some music nerds, Spin Magazine‘s 1991 reader’s poll for best album of the year went to Teenage Fanclub’s album, Bandwagonesque (a must-have 90’s indie record), beating out Nirvana‘s legendary Nevermind, which is still one of the top-selling albums in rock history. Bandwagonesque also beat My Bloody Valentine‘s Loveless and REM‘s worldwide smash LP, Out of Time.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t until TF’s fifth album, Grand Prix, that the group had their first top ten album in the UK. Interestingly, at the height of the Britpop craze in the mid 1990’s, the notoriously outspoken Liam Gallagher, of Oasis (both bands were signed to Creation Records), called Teenage Fanclub, “the second best band in the world” (of course, only after Oasis).  Following the demise of Creation, Teenage Fanclub continued to build on their critical acclaim, but were shifting between labels – from Columbia to Sony – until they launched their own PeMa label in 2005 to release the album Man-Made.

Today marks the release of Teenage Fanclub’s ninth studio LP, Shadows, via Merge Records, in the U.S.  The single below, “Baby Lee”, clearly demonstrates the band still has the magic they had 15 years ago to craft perfectly simplistic, hi-fi pop jems that appeal to a wide audience.

Brooklyn indie rock band Here We Go Magic, originally the one-man moniker of singer Luke Temple, officially release their debut album, Pigeons, today, via one of the best indie labels, Secretly Canadian. Temple had previously released two folk LPs under his own name, but it was when he released a self-titled LP as Here We Go Magic in February 2009 – produced in his home with a 4-track recorder – that he hit almost instant fame within the ‘indie music scene’. Pitchfork wrote that the LP features “hazy electronic textures, endlessly-spiraling lyrical loops, occasional forays into extended sections of ambience and noise.” Within weeks, Temple had been booked for tours with Grizzly Bear and The Walkmen, and recently completed tours with White Rabbits and The New Pornographers.
Music writer Jeremy Medina, comparing Pigeons to last year’s self-titled HWGM debut, observed: “The music is richer, more atmospheric and stranger than ever [with] catchy choruses and dance-ready beats.”

The Irish indie rock band Villagers are definitely one of the ‘break-through’ artists of 2010. Today marks the official U.S. release date of the group’s debut album, Becoming A Jackal. Villagers are fronted by former The Immediate band member Conor O’Brien. Villagers formed, ironically, immediately after the breakup of The Immediate, and within a relatively short period of time have become one of the most talked about overseas artists of 2010.

O’Brien said his lyrics are “transcendental darkness” and “dark imagery or feelings alongside really mundane domestic everyday things.” This will be a busy month for the band; this weekend they are booked for two festivals in the Netherlands, and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London at the beginning of next week before flying to New York to kick-off their U.S. tour at the legendary Knitting Factory and Union Hall in Brooklyn.  You can get more information via the band’s pages on Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and Facebook.

In February 2009, Stereogum named Brooklyn’s Suckers a band to watch. And no wonder. Their debut self-titled EP, which was co-produced by Anand Wilder of Yeasayer and Chris Moore (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio), is spectacular. Today the band officially releases their debut LP, Wild Smile.  This month, the band has four big shows, including two shows in Brooklyn with Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club and We Were Promised Jetpacks; the June 29th show at Prospect Park is sold out, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the June 18th record release party at the Music Hall of Williamsburg sells out as well. If you are in LA, Suckers are set to perform a 7 pm in-store show tonight at Amoeba Records.

Deer Tick has been on the uptick as far as a growing fanbase and respect from music professionals over the past couple of years, due in part to the band’s 2009 indie folk/country rock album, Born on Flag Day. Today, the Rhode Island band officially drop their third album, The Black Dirt Sessions. The Dirt LP is the most progressive album – full of darker, rougher ballads about growing up and the pain and challenges that love and life present.

“Twenty Miles”Deer Tick from The Black Dirt Sessions

Nada Surf are nowadays pretty much veteran rockers (wow time goes fast), but the band are not  stuck in the past, offering up their latest LP, if i had a hi-fi, to fans with the official release today. We haven’t heard it, but here is the lead single, a Bill Fox cover. Nada Surf head out on an European tour next month.

Another veteran indie rock group, Yo La Tengo, are also appealing to 2010 with their first ever EP featuring remixes of their songs; quite surprising for a band so long associated with anything but techno music. Here we have a Pete Rock remix of “Here to Fall” from the like-titled Here to Fall Remixes. Lo Ya Tengo fans: dilemma, huh?

Subpop recording artist Blitzen Trapper, who have been important to the success of the Portland, Oregon indie rock scene, drop their fifth studio album today, Destroyer of the Void. The LP was recorded  over a period of a year, from January 2009 to January 2010, with the assistance of Portland musician and engineer Mike Coykendall (Bright Eyes, M. Ward, She & Him). Subpop calls the album “an otherworldly experience”; a full album stream of Destroyer of The Void is available via Blitzen Trapper’s MySpace page.

“Heaven and Earth” Blitzen Trapper from Destroyer of the Void

One of the best alernative bands to come out of South Africa in recent years is the Johannesburg Soweto-rock (hear that Vampire Weekend?) group BLK JKS (pronounced Black Jacks). The guys broke through in 2008 to a U.S. audience even though they officially formed in 2000. Can’t wait to hear Zol! especially after listening to title track available below.

“Zol!” BLK JKS from Zol!

The prolific duo from the electronic outfit Ratatat, consisting of Mike Stroud and Even Mast, drop their ironically titled LP4 today. Stroud told Paste magazine “most of it was recorded during the same studio sessions that yielded LP3.” Why is that so believable?

“Party with Children” Ratatat from LP4

The fact that these last five songs are featured at the end of this week’s best new releases should not in any way be misconstrued as inferring that they are any less amazing as the numerous other songs listed in today’s mixtape. In fact, the first three bands – Light Pollution, The Moondoggies, and The Dig – are IRC Bands to Watch in 2010. Both albums, and the one EP, are worth checking into further if you like the singles.

As usual, we are stoked to be sharing all of this great music with as many people as possible, especially if we help turn you on to music and artists you had previously not been aware of, or just made it easier and more convenient to decide which albums you want to add to your collection, or what artists you hope to see live this summer. The whole thing about sharing great music, and turning people on to music they might not otherwise know about, is the fuel that drives our desire to keep doing this. In addition to the three BTW mentioned above, we are including new tracks from Casiokids and The Wailing Wall.

Arcade Fire leaked the album art of the Aug. 3 release, 'The Suburbs'

By popular demand, here’s another mixtape of songs that are hot right now on the web, according to sites like Hypem and Elbo.ws, as well as some of our favorite blogs, and songs that have been popular on IRC during the week. With the web release (leak?) of two new Arcade Fire songs late last week, it’s no surprise that the Montreal indie rock band were among the most widely played and blogged about band this week.

This playlist mix also features a web-made hit song from the ‘new and rising’ band, Ceo, the latest rising track from break-through duo Sleigh Bells, and a fresh single from one of indie rock’s best bands, The Drums. Also, don’t miss Thurston Moore’s (Sonic Youth) sweet remix of a Crystal Castles song and a Caribou remix of Four Tet, plus, popular tracks right now from Klaxons, Common Prayer, Wild Nothing, Born Ruffians, Teenage Fanclub,  How to Destroy Angels, Toro Y Moi, The Futureheads, and tracks that were popular on IRC this week (as you can see for yourself on our Hype page), including Coltrane Motion, Hooray for Earth, Unbunny, Big Tree, and Active Child. Enjoy, and spread the love.

For those of you who don’t follow us on Twitter or join us on Facebook, you probably didn’t hear that  Coldplay member Guy Barryman‘s musical side project, Apparatjik, have just announced a free EP download ahead of their upcoming debut LP.  The three-song EP, that includes a “premix”, and not-so-great cover art (wtf, it’s free), is called 4 Can Keep A Secret If 3 Of Them Are Dead.  The other members of Apparatjik are A-Ha’s Magne Furuholmen, Mew’s Jonas Bjerre and Martin Terefe. Although it’s not hot yet because it’s so new, we thought it wise to kick-off this mix with the new Apparatjik song, “Antlers”.

One Man Bands: Jumpiter, Blake McKibben, Old Lights, Levek, and Galapaghost

Note: We’re back with another One Man Bands special. Today we have some amazing artists that we think you’ll like.

A new one man band from Brooklyn (get in line, jk) has managed to catch our attention within the hundreds of songs that are floating around that we love, could love and haven’t heard yet.  Right away, we were intrigued by Jumpiter, the musical project of Sean Schuyler. The songs he sent into us peaked our curiousity to hear more.
Jumpiter’s alternative rock/psychedelic pop sound is masterfully composed and executed, making it a no-brainer to add Jumpiter to our Bands to Watch in 2010 list. It’s always a bit of a thrill when a band, or artist, you – nor most other music nerds – never heard of   sends music in dee mail that is simply terrific; soon, you find yourself wondering if they’ll “catch on” and what their next move will be. To go along with some other tracks he previously sent in, today, Schulyer sent in a newer track, “Overborn”, ripe with a slacker guitar riff and lo fi roughness. We’re loving most of his songs – righteous.

Blake McKibben is a popular unsigned musician from Portland, Oregon who has been recording his own music since he was 18 years old. In 2001, he started his own recording studio, Clarity Recording, and eventually established himself as a producer in Portland. Now he has compiled his own favorite songs on his debut release Haze. Remarkably, his MySpace page registers over one half of a million profile views, and his songs have been played nearly one million times. It’s rare to see those kind of numbers for an unsigned musician, but his music speaks for itself.

Old Lights is the monkier of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Beeman. He is a transplant from southern California to St. Louis, Missouri. Beeman is best known for his work as a drummer for David Vandervelde and as the sound engineer for bands such as Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit and Elvis Perkins. Impressive. Beeman began recording songs that he wrote on the road with Gabriel Doiron, who contributed lead guitar, bass, and co-wrote and arranged some of the songs.

Together they built and tore down several improvised home studio’s in their respective residences. Old Lights’ music is heavily inspired by post-Beatles‘ solo records and Beach Boys‘ harmonies, a resulting layered and textured pop sound that calls out to fans of Rufus Wainwright, Badfinger and Okkervil River.

The next one man band we found out about via our friends at I Guess I’m Floating. His name is David Levesque from Orlando, Florida and describes his music as “Mickey Mouse tropical sounds”. Using the moniker, Levek, he writes and records spirited, upbeat music with plenty of reverb and sound effects. By day, he is an elementary school bus driver.

Levek’s music is compared to Sufjan Stevens, Disney movies and the folk rock band Grizzly Bear. For example, the track “Geographic John” hits “the same melodic alchemy as GB’s Daniel Rossen on the vocal harmonies”, and “Loon And The Lion” is, according to IGIF, a “brand new folky delicacy”.

Galapaghost is the musical moniker of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Casey Chandler who released his EP, Lost Generation, last December. Growing up in the upstate New York small town of Woodstock (the actual historic 1969 Woodstock Music Festival was held in nearby Bethel, NY), Chandler was exposed to music at a very young age, mastering the saxophone and teaching himself how to play bass at age 14. Soon after, he began playing guitar and writing and singing his own songs as well as taking an internship at a local music studio.

Now a resident of New York City, Chandler is assembling a full line-up of musicians for his Galapaghost band project. His songwriting is influenced by a range of bands from Midlake to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to Beck. He is also a 2009 graduate of SUNY at Purchase with a bachelor’s degree in music production. We asked Chandler about the somewhat feminish sound of this voice on the song, “Neptune” and he replied: “Oh yeah, ‘Neptune’ definitely does sound like a female vocalist. I listen to and sing along with a lot of Sigur Ros, so my voice is actually most comfortable in that range, but I could just never find a song fitting to sing that high until I wrote Neptune.”
