Animal Names – “Flowers In Your Hair”

Musicians Ian Gollahon and Brian Keller are no strangers to the indie annals of Tulsa. Nearly a decade ago, they were just kids making a splash in the growing local indie scene.

Then high school graduations and college came along. And while they were out of the Tulsa scene for a number of years attending university, the duo, along with drummer Philip Martin, and bassist Aaron Wesinger, returned to their hometown recently to start a new musical project called Animal Names.

A successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year officially welcomed Animal Names to the Tulsa indie scene. The new trio draws inspiration and influence from the bands they have admired for years, such as Grizzly Bear, Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, Counting Crows, Mountain Goats, and Fleet Foxes.

The first single – from their upcoming debut album slated to drop next month – “Greens and Reds,” is an electric guitar-driven song with elements of atmospherics, somewhat in the tradition of Jeff Beck, that has a real classic rock quality about it, intentionally or not.

The newest, and second, single, “Flowers In Your Hair,” is not a hippy dippy song as much as it sounds like. In fact, it is something of a real gem for the summer playlists, we believe. It cannot be overstated that the band members’ skills in instrumentation and song composition prove that they are, once again, and perhaps more than ever, a force to be reckoned with in Tulsa. (Yes, you can go back home again).

When indie was really taking off, from 2007 to 2009, Gollahon and Keller, were part of the indie band, I Said Stop! in Tulsa. Even when they split up and went off to college, I Said Stop!’s music did not fade completely from their local radio stations and fans’ memories.

In May, Gollahon, who interned with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Counting Crows), and Keller, who interned at Chicago Recording Company and works C9 Studios, joined the other band members of Animal Names to headline the Blue Dome Arts Festival.

Animal Names self-titled debut album will be released officially on vinyl and CD at a release party next month.

Coding Candy – “Rachael”

The Italian composer of genre-bending cinematic, electronic/digital music, Luigi Cirelli, otherwise known as Coding Candy, dropped a terrific new EP titled, H3ll0 W0rld, last month.

Largely inspired by “movie soundtracks, TV series, anime and novels,” as well as England’s Bristol trip hop movement, H3ll0 W0rld‘s overall feel is an ethereal tour de force of engaging synth riffs; laid back instrumentations; angst-filled, and sparingly used, vocal arrangements; trippy dance beats; sonic dreamscapes and ambient overtones; various sound effects and samples; infusions of world and international music, and loads of electronic and digitally enhanced song structures and experimentation.

Cirelli himself calls his new and very different EP “a soundtrack for life,” covering genres from electronic and industrial to pop and psychedelic. “It can be a movie score,” he writes, “a background for your daily life set to music and sounds.”

The first single from the album, the thrilling and potent, “Rachael,” was inspired by the 1982 classic movie Bladerunner, according to Cirelli. Altogether, Coding Candy’s new EP, is a remarkable work that you don’t want to miss.

Cirelli’s main artistic influences in the popular music world include Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Air, Aphex Twin, and The Cure.

Lastlings – “You”

Combining their unique brand of lush electronica and breathtaking vocals, Australian brother-sister duo Lastlings, just released a new exotic music video for the hypnotic and emotive, even melancholic, track, “You,” from the siblings’ new EP, Unreality.

Directed by rising talent ORFN, who produced The Rubens’ “Hoops” clip, the Lastlings’ video was shot in multiple locations around the city of Tokyo. According to the band’s publicist, “A minimal and refined approach was used to explore and juxtapose the different textual elements Tokyo had to offer, with the choreography element incorporated to pay homage to the traditional Japanese Geisha.”

The EP also features the standout track “Wavelength,” and 2015’s “Chills,” which has received over a half million streams on Spotify alone. Lastlings has garnered the attention of the critics and fans in Japan, Australia and now, worldwide.

We hope they’ll now breakout in the U.S. “You” is their debut US-UK single, which you can play in the streaming playlist at the top of the page or via the YouTube video above.

Jack Lavoie – “I Wonder”

Canadian country rock musician Jack Lavoie grew up in Quebec City listening to music and participating in arts and learning whilebeing raised in a bi-cultural, bilingual family. Today Lavoie is an established, yet DIY, country rock star in Canada.

Last year, his single, “I Am Sorry,” became a crowd favorite, blew up on Canadian radio and has receive nearly 180,000 plays on YouTube alone.

Lavoie and his band released their third album, Out of The Box, in April, featuring the standout single, “I Wonder.” The catchy melodies and sing-along quality of the song, as well as it’s decidedly less modern country rock feel, make it a little something different for fans, not to mention the live and post-live film shooting and editing with a group of friends at the studio. The video has already received over 300,000 views in the past four months.

Growing up in a creative and diverse environment was the perfect incubator for Lavoie, so it is no surprise that he began writing, composing and performing his own songs as a teen.  It was not long before Lavoie was filling venues in his native land and growing a loyal fan base.  His accolades also include songwriting awards like an honorary mention in the 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for the song, “Reason,” from his band’s debut album, and a Billboard World Songwriting award.

Versus The Wake – “Pursuit of Perfection”

Versus The Wake is an acoustic duo from Long Island, New York. Their newest video, “Pursuit of Perfection,” is a studio session outtake. The song, which is divided into two parts, features rich acoustic and vocal driven melodies, and does a remarkable job conveying the emotions that come with the ups and downs of any of life’s pursuits, especially that of perfection, which is ultimately unattainable.

What we would say is that VTW’s sound comes off a bit too polished and predictable to be indie, and the whispery vocals are a bit too imitative of so much radio music during the past decade.

Since their bio says that both guys, who wish to remain anonymous, were “born from the rubble and ash in which life’s hardships and obstacles leave one with,” we’d like to hear some of that angst and grit in their music music instead of the safe place they are currently operating from. Another new single, “Soul Search,” is available for viewing.

Ian and The Dream – “The Girl Who Knows Everything”

The Milwaukee band Ian and The Dream craft pop-rock driven songs with heavy melodies and hooks, like the new single, “The Girl Who Knows Everything,” with its decidedly 80’s new wave slant to it.

A second song, which hasn’t been released yet, titled, “The Heat of Her Soul,” reminded me at first of Dr. Hook’s “When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman,” but definitely has it’s own flare and appeal. Over the past couple of years, the band has been increasingly been on the radar of indie fans in the western Great Lakes region.

The band is the creation of Ian Ash (songwriter, lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), and also features Matt “Chivo” Chivas on bass and Brian Farvour on drums. In 2014, competing in Bodog’s Battle of the Bands, Ian and The Dream were named ‘Best Milwaukee Band,’ landing them performances in front of larger crowds at venues like the Metro and House of Blues in Chicago.

BestMan – “Worry”

The very 80’s-sounding new single, “Worry,” from the Chicago recording duo BestMan, is the latest new track from the upcoming album Big Sky, set to drop on August 5th.

BestMan founding songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Clouthier and vocalist Jonathan Alvin are the forces behind the new Windy City indie duo.

They are keen at combining sunny, vibrant electro indie pop and new wave to produce glittery melodic synth riffs with driving, industrial-like beats – the essential building blocks and the hallmarks of BestMan’s music – imagine Depeche Mode’s children on prozac.

The duo this Friday evening, July 15th, at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen with the band Step Rockets.

boomlights

Boomlights – “Visitors”

Nashville indie rock band Boomlights formed when brothers Alexander Jones and Derrek Jones, from Delaware, moved to Nashville and eventually began to record reverb-soaked demos on GarageBand with their neighbor, and Atlanta born guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tony Compton, and drummer Adam Puff, also from Delaware, who moved to Nashville to join the band.

Over the past year, the band has worked diligently on writing and recording a set of songs from their initial demos. The result is an impressive debut EP.

Tracks like the electric guitar-driven alt. rock ballad, “Visitors,” with Compton’s tortured, soulful vocals, and the more edgy, garage rock cut, “Behave Like Animals,” are some of the standout tracks from the band’s new four-track EP, Forty-One Fifteen Sessions.

“Visitors,” more vocally than instrumentally, is likely to draw some comparisons to Thom Yorke. Not surprisingly, the Jones’ brothers, and their band mates, are Radiohead fans.

“From what I recall we found out we had a great deal of music in common,” Alexander Jones says, “including modern bands like Radiohead, Cold War Kids, the Strokes and Beck, as well as more classic bands like The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Pixies, and Television.

“I think we bonded over how wide-ranging our tastes were,” Jones adds, “and a love for catchy melodies and good song structure more than we did over any certain band or one genre.”

The band’s EP, recorded at Nashvile’s Forty-One Fifteen Studio, which served as the inspiration for the EP title, was officially released on June 20th.

Video Premiere: Empire of Gold’s Raw and Artsy ‘Intoxicated’

San Diego underground grunge rock musician and one-man band, Michael J. Dole, who released his blistering Nirvana-influenced debut album, Crass, under the moniker of Empire of Gold, a couple of weeks ago, premieres the gritty, super charged, “Intoxicated,” via EoG’s splashy, surreal and artsy new music video.

The song is a balls-to-the-wall nod to Dole’s favorite band, Nirvana, spliced together with a fast-moving, colorful and interesting collage of mostly public domain images and videos.

The musical journey for Dole began in Chicago at the age of 14 when he received a guitar for Christmas. In time, Dole found himself leaning towards 90’s alternative rock and metal.

“My interest in music when I was a kid was all the metal music coming out in the late 90’s,” Dole says. “The ones I took a keen interest to was Slipknot, Mudvayne, Coal Chamber, Korn, and so on.”

But there was a catch. He also loved Green Day, and credits the band with encouraging him to explore other genres. After graduating from high school in 2005, Dole decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue film, attending the respected The Art Institute.

However, the cross-continent move to the Pacific Coast left a big gap in his life. He was homesick for his native Chicago and feel into a depression. And like many artists, a fall into darkness can be the very fuel to inspire them to crawl out by channelling the sadness, fear and isolation into poignant and meaningful art. Which is exactly what Dole did.

It would still be years later – in fact, nearly a decade after graduating high school – in 2013 when Dole finally decided to take the demos he’d worked on for years and start recording them. He released his first EP, Raw, last summer.

Oddly, Dole had never listened to Nirvana’s ground-breaking album, Nevermind – one of the biggest selling albums of all time – until two decades following its official release in 1993. That changed everything for Dole, and he kicked off Empire of Gold.

“That album changed my whole style, transforming me from an acoustic singer/songwriter to a ‘grunge head.’ It was like an epiphany. I realized my purpose.”

Digging The Archives, 2009 – Durham’s Bombadil and Chicago’s Shadows On A River

Digging The Archives – Sounds of [YEAR] is a new series in which we’ll dig back into our published and unpublished posts to highlight songs and artists that broke through from 2007 to 2015.

Original file date: June 2, 2009

Durham, North Carolina indie folk pop band Bombadil first hit our radar last year with their stunning full-length debut A Buzz, A Buzz – making it one of our favorite indie albums of 2008.

Bombadil’s latest release, Tarpits and Canyonlands, is an impressive follow-up, full of lo-fi piano, violin, clanking sticks, acoustic guitars, choruses and shatters, as on the lead single, “Honeymoon.”

The organically recorded and released, “Kuala Lumpur,” is a hand-clapping, acoustic guitar, chorus-driven celebratory song about Malaysia and its famous capital, with very much a Polynesian feel.

Formed March 2005 when guitarist Bryan Rahija and bassist Daniel Michalak were studying abroad in Bolivia. Drummer James Phillips joined Bombadil in 2007. The band described their latest album as “a joyful document that celebrates all the flaws and sorrows of the human condition while capturing the whimsy, spirit, and charm that has enabled the band to win over fan after fan on a relentless four-year tour.”

Bombadil has open for bands like The Avett Brothers and Langhorne Slim and performed at Bonnaroo in addition to being featured in Paste Magazine, The Washington Post and New York Magazine.

More About Bombadil

Chicago indie band Shadows On A River originally played together as college students at Milkin University in Decatur as The Infinity Room, and once opened for Pedro The Lion.

Following graduation, the band split up but recently regrouped to record their new debut self-titled album featuring strange and earnest art rock.

Lead singer/songwriter and guitarist David Henson lists “self doubt” as his main musical influence and compares the band’s sound to Elliott Smith, Radiohead and Mt Eerie.

Henson’s favorite song is “Unravel” by Bjork and his favorite albums are The Glow Part 2 by the Microphones and Kid A by Radiohead.

HYMNS – The London EP

HYMNS is a London alternative rock band formed by guitarist and vocalist Oliver Hooper, Giorgio Compagnone on bass guitar and backing vocals, Matthew Ash on guitar and Ben Edwards on drums. The band’s driving dark rock sound on tracks like “London” and “Masquerade” draw influences from bands such as Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Interpol and Queens of the Stone Age, and genres such as alternative, indie rock and hints of post rock. They remind us a little of Editors. The band’s new release, out now, is titled The London EP.

“The new EP explores themes of isolation, desperation and hope in modern day city living,” Hooper says. “It is a collection of songs that offer an honest commentary on the way we live and attempts to offer a pragmatic way forward.”

The band recorded their just released EP at Smokehouse Studios at the Tobacco Docks in London. Most of the songs were recorded live with additional vocal, guitar and synth overdubs added during mixing. The songs were tracked through a Classic 66 channel Cadac E type console, produced by Rohan Budd, and mixed in ProTools.

Cesar Maria – Cesar Maria

Cesar Maria (aka Sayzar Mareuh) is a New York City indie rock artist who is heavily influenced by a variety of genres including classic rock and post punk. A multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and producer, Maria has narrowed his sound into a splashy psychedelic blend of folk, glam rock and garage rock.

His talents as an artist set him apart from many of his DIY contemporaries. Take the lead single from his new release. The rebel-rousing, addictive, “Let It On,” from his new self-titled EP, reminds us of something like Bowie, T. Rex and Violent Femmes all together for one nerdy, rocking glam jam. Maria’s biggest musical influences also include Neil Young and Gram Parsons, also which are evident in his not-always-easy-to-pin-down sound.

shy kids – Lofty

Quirky indie chamber pop with sweeping and triumphant swells of ringing guitars, crunchy synths, booming percussions, joyous choruses dripping with melodic hooks are the hallmarks of Toronto indie band shy kids‘ indelibly catchy single, “Rockets.”

There is a twist though; towards the end of the track, things get a bit chaotic and psychedelic – like in The Beatles’ “No.9” kind of way – with backwards tape winding, sound effects, random voice clips and more before suddenly it stops without warning. The video for “Rockets“ is also a trip.

Another track, “Terminally In Love With You,” also from the album, Lofty, is beautifully melancholic, a total juxtaposition to “Rockets,” yet more evidence of the band’s collective talents. The members are Walter Woodman (singer/bass); Patrick Cederberg (guitar, piano), and Matthew Hornick (guitar, piano).

Huckleberry – Shasta City, Bad News Ricky

Phoenix indie rockers Huckleberry have managed to drop one of the best DIY singles we’ve heard so far this year – the inspiring and infectious, “Wild Ricky,” off of the band’s new EP, Shasta City, Bad News Ricky. It’s just got that certain spunk and energy to it.

Another track, “Shasta,” an ode to the beautiful majesty of Mt. Shasta in California, is a much different track, a folkish alt. country song that highlights the band’s diverse influences including The Avett Brothers, The Oh Hellos, Bird Dog, Grateful Dead, and Wilco.

March On, Comrade – March On, Comrade

In 2015, Fort Wayne DIY band March On, Comrade formed “out of the smoldering ashes” of the talented, disbanded Ordinary Van, and have been playing to sold out audiences ever since.

“Our live show contains programmed industrial lighting, extensive guitar effects, percussion, and layered reverbs,” says guitarist Ryan Holquist.

The band’s new self-titled debut EP features the band’s piano-driven, epic, and sprawling sounds, oozing with melodies and harmonies of indie rock with post rock influences on songs like “Shade,” and the awesome vocal work of bassist John Ptak, who has a mighty vocal range that enhances, not dilutes, the song itself.

The other accomplished band members of March On, Comrade include guitarist Charlie Davis, drummer Chris Leonard, and Ben Robinson on keys and. percussion. The band has opened for bands like Metavari and Heaven’s Gateway Drugs, and are majorly influenced by Sigur Rós and Radiohead.

The band includes vocalist and guitarist Alex Mackenzie-Low; drummer Matt McElwain; keyboardist Karl Rivers; guitarist Billy Farmer; percussionist Jake Heym, and bassist Robby Sands. A-Mac DZ have opened for bands like Rusted Root, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and MarchFourth!, and count among their biggest influences Nahko & Medicine For The People, Dispatch, and Citizen Cope.

Rikashay – All Alright

The Markham, Ontario indie pop band Rikashay dropped their debut EP, All Alright, last month, featuring the single, “Please!,” an indie lo-fi pop rock track that has an awesome hook that save the song from indie pop mediocrity.

The second track, the ska-inspired, “Carefree,” is a stronger song overall, and actually a lot of fun at an outdoor barbeque, partly thanks to it’s unmistakable Weezer influence. The duo is vocalist and guitarist Isaac Papineau and drummer Jaiden Crawford. And it’s no surprise the band are big fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Talent, Weezer, Mac DeMarco, and Less Than Jake.

Welshly Arms – Cleveland, Ohio

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, blues garage rock band Welshly Arms knows how to rock. Formed in 2012, the band has released a couple of EP that have garnered them attention in their hometown, which appropriately is the location of the world famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Their amazing track, “The Touch,” with it’s gritty, attitude-oozing, even somewhat spooky thrust, is irresistible for anyone that loves stomping, kick-ass rock. The song would be perfect on the soundtrack of HBO’s series Vinyl. Come on, Mick and Martin – listen to this track. We’d even be so bold as to say that these guys are a yet-to-be-discovered Black Keys (except with more people).

MP3: “The Touch”Welshly Arms from Welcome

Band members Sam Getz on guitar and vocals; Jimmy Weaver on bass; Mikey Gould on drums and Brett Lindemann on keys are all competent and accomplished musicians in their own right, which is part of their appeal.

The band members are heavily influenced by artists like The Black Keys, The James Gang, The Ojays, Jimi Hendrix, Alabama Shakes and Howlin’ Wolf.

Combining rhythm and soul, rock and jazz, with lots of blues, the band has knocked out a string of riveting, creative and exciting home brewed guitar rockers over the past few years.

In the summer of 2014, the band’s ripping riffer, “Dirty Work,” was released and used in a promotional video for the band’s hometown baseball team’s (Cleveland Indians) new season. That’s a pretty big deal for a home town band in the city known worldwide for rock and roll.

The Scarlet Son – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Scarlet Son band from Pittsburgh is a heavy alt. rock band that began as a solo project for vocalist and guitarist Kris Litman before his friend and bass player Sterling Taylor joined followed by drummer Colin Mcbride and guitarist Dan Winschel.

The first single, “Silence,” is cloaked by a dark and heavy shadow, full of hard driving beats, blazing, buzzsaw guitars, and at times, even slight pop rock elements. There’s no question their sound is partly influenced by the 80’s metal and hard rock bands – just without the teased hair, make-up and tights (and that’s definitely a good). The second track, “Consumed,” is another solid rocker from the band’s self-titled debut.

yourenvy2

YourEnvy – Dryden, Ontario

Well-honed, good ole fashioned rock and roll blues is the signature sound of Dryden, Ontario duo YourEnvy‘s album, Darkside, featuring standout rockers like “Blue Ale,” that harken back to a bygone era when rock ruled the world.

If you know anything about Detroit rock from the 70s and early 80s (Iggy and The Stooges; MC5; Ted Nugent; Alice Cooper, etc.), that’s where YourEnvy has its roots. The track “Dirt Hill Woman II” is a rock radio blast from the past, reminiscent of classic rock bands like KISS, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with a flare of T. Rex. These guys are tight!

MP3: “Blue Ale“YourEnvy from Darkside

Inspired by both American blues and British hard rock, YourEnvy have emerged from deep within the forests of northern Ontario with a twisted saga of battle, romance, and nature. All the instruments are performed by Shawn Sherwood, with vocals from Clint Gottinger. The duo has opened for bands like Black Jack, Dayblind, and Stratovarius, and list their top musical influences, a bit surprisingly (but not really), as Helloween, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Guns N Roses.

sunblaze-lane

Sunblaze Lane – Westchester, Pennsylvania

Since 2014, the Westchester, Pennsylvania DIY rock band Sunblaze Lane has released one single at a time, bucking the tradition of a new band dropping either a debut EP or LP. But it doesn’t really matter because smoking songs like “I’m Coming Home” and “All I ever Wanted,” show how talented the band is; great band name by the way.

“It’s easy to avoid sounding like one type of music because our influences are all very different,” says lead guitarist Justin Smith. “Without getting into too much detail, our biggest challenges have to do with alcohol, women, money, and the law. All of us have similar interests, but common problems.”

The other band members, all in their mid-20s, include frontman and guitarist Nick Hopton, drummer John Lamplugh and bassist Addison Scott.

Sunblaze Lane has opened for bands like The Moxy, The Quireboys, Goodman Fiske, Hello Cleveland, and are mainly influenced by Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Arctic Monkeys.

The Glorious Moonrockets – Ottawa, Ontario

From their home base in the Ontario capital of Ottawa, indie rock band The Glorious MoonRockets belt out a gripping trashy, gritty punk rock sound that has rightfully earned them a spot in the Bands That Rock series. Formed in 2011, the band has kept busy with recording and releasing new material as well as touring throughout eastern Canada.

With their garage and psych rock influences, notable 90’s grunge tinges and raw, driving lo-fi power chords notable on the band’s menacing, edgy track, “Down On Their Luck” – a gritty chugging track that is ripe for the soundtrack of a series like Vinyl – and “3 Dollar Dinner,” a blazing rocker. Deer Park – Quentin In My Vitamins

Based out of Seattle, the relatively new indie rock project Deer Park kicks out a Built To Spill-like alt. rock grit with mini theatrics on “Me Against The World,” just one of the riveting songs on Deer Park’s debut album, Quentin In My Vitamins.

Rob Auerbach, a cousin of Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), is the founder and main force behind Deer Park. In addition to writing and singing all of the songs, Auerbach played all of instruments – including guitar, bass and drums – and programmed, recorded, mixed and produced every song, including the cool-ass follow-up track, “Coffee.”

Auerbach’s favorite bands include Tera Melos, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill and Cage The Elephant – not surprising at all when you listen to his songs. Deer Park has now expanded into a full band, with the addition of members Ben Jelinek, Brian DePartee and Jack David.

Starfinder – “If I Were You”

With a blockbuster of 80’s and 90’s underground influences like New Order, The Cure, Joy Division and Depeche Mode, among others, Chicago musician Ian G (Ian Galloway) has just launched a brand new electronic music project, Starfinder.

As Starfinder, Galloway celebrates his love of new wave, synth pop and goth, and also draws from years of experience as a band member of several past and present punk, garage, and indie rock bands, including Porno Mags, whose self-released debut album peaked at #47 on CMJ in 2014. He is also a member of Chicago bands Witchfeet and Joy Shooters. Woah, dude, slow down.

Music was something that was central to his life from early teens.

“I got into skateboarding and in turn started hearing punk rock and early indie rock in skate videos,” he says. “I was immediately drawn to stuff like Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi, and Bad Religion.” In his later teen years, Galloway studied, wrote and produced electronic music in his spare time.

Starfinder-bw-lanscape2

The tantalizing, New Order-influenced track, “If I Were You,” is the first single released by Starfinder, and his first venture into electronic based music, with, he promises, many more productions in the works. We’ve watched the song track on Soundcloud over the past couple of months, and it has picked up enthusiastic feedback from music lovers – always a good sign when the audience is engaging.

We know a lot about how to measure how an artist is received by fans, and one way is to look at their Soundcloud. For Starfinder to receive 50 positive comments on a track with approximately 1,200 plays says something profound about the excitement his music has sparked with a whole lot of music lovers in a very short time. That is rare.

Another track, “In The Dark,” sounds like another jem already with a cool vibe, prominent drum beat, catchy rhythm, echoey vocals and synth and guitar melodies and hooks throughout. We’d like to hear, however, a higher production value because the instrumentation, via production, is a bit muted; it should be bigger-sounding, in our opinion. And that’s why we say – promising artist.

Vicious Kicks – Los Angeles, California

Vicious Kicks is the Los Angeles songwriting duo of DIY songwriters and musicians Nzo Tiano and Ray Giron. The two friends, now in their early 20s, have been writing songs together since they were in high school, where they met and realized they had similar music interests.

Last week, VK dropped their new track, “Weekend,” which we think is one of the best DIY singles so far this year. Check it out for yerself and give love if you’re feeling it. Their top musical influences – hints of which you can hear in their songs – include Black Keys, Tame Impala, Cream, Foo Fighters, and Wolf Mother.

“It was an exciting track to work with,” Tiano says, “especially coming from our talented friend, Eric (a.k.a Yungwar1ock). He presented the song to us, and we immediately gravitated to the feel-good vibe by adding our own lyrical and creative embellishments.”

Vicious Kicks was officially formed last year, and soon after released their debut EP, Mayhem. The EP is full of hard-hitting, in-your-face pop rock on well produced songs like “Run” and the unforgettable, “Workaholic.” The guys also create their own artwork – and as you can see displayed above, is impressive, especially the new cover art for “Weekend.”

Another track, “Wicked Summer,” one of their first tracks, is a hard-driving, funky and celebratory track that is, as its title implies, perfect for the summertime.

Susan Hyatt – Pin-Ups & Trumpets

Cover albums come out all of the time and the vast majority of them should have never been released. But in the case of professional musician Susan Hyatt, her new covers album, Pin-Ups & Trumpets, is simply exceptional. She worked on the album with famed Nashville producer Zack Leffew.

“I have always been a fan of David Bowie’s Pin Ups album,” Hyatt says. “This record is my Pin Ups, and includes some of my fave dark rock songs [when I was] growing up.”

Hyatt describes the album as ‘dark indie jazz’ where trumpets have replaced guitars. And somehow the duo pull it off, upping the ante for unconventional cover songs, or just cover songs in general, on covers from Motley Crue’s “Looks That Kill” to Marilyn Manson’s “The Dope Show,” and Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” to Judas Priests’ “Breaking The Law.”

“I chose the songs that I loved growing up, the ones I felt most connected to lyrically and melodically. The most challenging cover was Life in the Fast Lane. I am a huge fan of the original song and I knew in order to cover it I had to make it a total departure from the original. My ideas was to make it artsy and mellow like Nine Inch Nails meets Twin Peaks.”

Our favorite is her sensual and totally original cover of the late and great David Bowie‘s “Young Americans.” We are willing to take the chance to say that Ziggy Stardust would be proud.

Hyatt and Leffew have taken on a kick-ass collection of rock and roll favorites and given them a totally different spin that you’re not going to hear anywhere else. This is an album you want, because you’re likely to play it again and again. Hyatt is obviously a very accomplished, and cool ass, musician.

It’s so nice to have something so original – as original as one can be for cover songs. From soprano to sultry and seductive, Hyatt has a voice that allows her to explore almost any genre she wants and yet retain the brass roots of jazz and rock at the same time.

MOSAICS – Year of Valor

The second single, “Freedom,” from San Francisco acoustic-electronic pop trio MOSAICS has an industrial electro edge with a wicked rhythm accompanied by sensual vocals.

The track is the follow-up to the success of the first single, “Year of Valor”, the title track from the band’s new EP set to drop on May 27th.

The album features a collection of carefully arranged and produced songs, and marks the debut of Bay Area vocalist Maryam Sadeghian, whose seductive vocals have added a layer of mystery and intrigue to the band’s music, which is decidedly more electro-acoustic than previous releases.

Human Buoy – Animation Station

The spooky, funky “Period Of Maximum Excitability” is the new single from Perth, Australian indie psych band Human Buoy‘s debut album, Animation Station. The track is obviously meant to sound dark and ominous since the adopted subject matter is just that.

The song was written in Amsterdam after band founder and multi-instrumentalist Ben McDonald (who has worked with members of Tame Impala and POND), watched a documentary about the ‘collective consciousness’ of the world that suggests the sun’s activity “seems to freakishly mirror that of the population’s behaviour,” he said.

“It’s during the solar cycle known as the ‘period of maximum excitability’ when pivotal events such as world wars and revolutions most occur,” McDonald adds. And thus, the name and theme of Human Buoy’s debut.

One thing that would have made the song stronger, I think, is if that cool little guitar picking at the end of the track was woven in and out throughout the quieter realms of the song because it provides a little levity that is beckoning. But all around, it’s a solid track. While we dig this new single, we like the debut single, “Oxygen”, just a little more.

Animation Station features special guest appearances by Ariel Pink; Nick Allbrook (POND); Malcolm Clark; Ben Smith (Blud), and Shiny Joe Ryan. McDonald plays guitar, bass and synths, as well as produces and mixes. His biggest influences, he says, are David Bowie, Beck and MGMT.

Joel Strauss – Songs For The Vaudeville Theatre

From the natural beauty of western British Columbia, the DIY Kelowna-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joel Strauss returns with a terrific new album, Songs For The Vaudeville Theatre, featuring the standout, heavily melodic and hook-filled “Vaudeville.”

The track, and the album, is meticulously arranged and produced, once again highlighting Strauss’ many talents as one man band, performing adeptly on guitar, bass and drums, among other instruments.

His wonderfully distinctive, high-pitched, somewhat nasally, vocal range is one of the best registers to come out the Great White North. Strauss’ influences include Bob Dylan, Smashing Pumpkins, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, and Leonard Cohen.

The idea for the concept album struck Strauss after he was reading about vaudeville. “That mix of creativity, expression and performance has me convinced that if I lived in the 1920s and 1930s, I would have been a vaudevillian myself,” he says. “There are sounds on this album that echo the sounds in music from the 20s and 30s – as if there is a piece of this history placed inside the songs.”

Gibberish is currently working on a follow-up to their fine 2015 debut EP, Winter Coat.

Mock Sun – “Soup Spoon”

From the old mining district of northeastern Pennsylvania comes Mock Sun, a lucid, ever-evolving, psychedelic lo-fi pop duo “born out of desperation” when two young Wilkes-Barre musicians, Mark Wohl and Jami Kali, “became dangerously dissatisfied with the hum drum dumb-dumb routine of the small coal-mining town from which they sprouted.”

The result was the impressive debut album, Hungry Mother, that dropped in 2013, followed by two EPs and two live albums. In 2014, the duo morphed into a quartet with the addition of Mark Dimirco and DJ Tasselmyer.

The band just dropped the new single, “Soup Spoon,” a dreamy, surreal psych jam that we have enjoyed since we first got ears on it. We are looking forward to the album release of Post-Hypnotic this summer – no official date set as of yet.

Red Kitchen – “Drummond Heights”

The pop rock of Seattle band Red Kitchen reminds us a lot of The Kinks (circa 1966-1971) when Ray Davies‘ prolific, and genius, songwriting spree produced some of the most beloved and well-known songs in British rock, including “Waterloo Sunset,” “Tired of Waiting,” “Dedicated Follower of Fashion,” “This Time Tomorrow,” and, of course, “Lola.” But Red Kitchen is definitely not The Kinks at the same time – just influenced, directly or indirectly, by the band.

Pacific Northwest musician Matt McClure is the one man band behind Red Kitchen, playing, recording and mixing all of the instruments himself. In 2008, McClure wrote and released the album, The Second Person, an audio novel of sorts that follows the life of an elderly man who lost his wife and ends up in a nursing home suffering from dementia. It’s an interesting listen, that’s for sure, and shows McClure’s ability for creative songwriting and instrumentation, vocals and mixing. The album’s lyrics have an accompanying unpublished novel.

The album features guest spots on vocals by the Swedish front man for The Open Up and Bleeds, Joel Segerstedt, as well as bass and production work by Canadian producer Jonathan Piche. The song “The Flag Makers” was featured on a Silver Jews-related compilation.

The track is really zany, upbeat, melodic and fun. So much so we have played it a number of times. Other standout tracks from his first album include the catchy, hook-filled “Right Subject, Wrong Day,” and the mysterious lo-fi of “Fake Estates,”.

Beach Gossip – “Stupid Surf Song”

Beach Gossip is a Los Angeles duo founded by songwriter, vocalist, producer and guitarist Nick Coffey earlier this year.

The energetic and angst-filled mix of punk, garage and surf rock on Beach Gossip’s debut single, “Stupid Surf Song,” rings out as a calling to all skateboarders, surfers and other dare devils who like their music fast, hard and raw.

But the song also weaves in elements of pop and has a wicked hook and chorus. It is meant to be lo-fi, rough and a summer anthem for DIY-loving punks.

In fact, “Stupid Surf Song” is almost custom made for any number of skateboard and other thrill sports videos that are fast, daring and dangerous. In fact, there are plans in the works for just such a video.

As a skateboarder and enthusiast growing up on the legendary streets and pool pits made famous in the 1970’s and 80’s by LA’s Z Boys and Bones Brigade, Coffey earned his skateboard creds. In his teens, he broke his neck in a car accident.

The single is the lead advance track from Beach Gossip’s upcoming June release. Coffey recruited drummer Brendan McQueeney in March of 2016. The duo are rehearsing in order to play live shows in the Los Angeles region.

Navigation Day – “Town”

Leeds indie-rock duo Navigation Day‘s new track, “Town,” is the lead single from the upcoming release of the duo’s debut EP, entitled Mid-Decade Blue, on May 27th. The EP marks the first collaborative venture from songwriters Spencer Bayles and guitarist Tim Hann, despite having contributed to each other’s musical projects over the past few years.

Bayles based the song “Town” on “lyrical snapshots about the constantly changing face of the modern city and how we find our own place within it.” The video for the single captures the scenes of the duo’s adopted town of Leeds. Songs like the title track, “Mid-Decade Blue” and “Formed Into Armour” delve into questions of identity and belonging, asking ‘what you’ve achieved at this middle point of a decade that’s proved turbulent in so many ways?’

Hann previously fronted the alt. rock quartet I Concur, whose debut album, Able Archer, was championed by Radio One’s Huw Stephens, leading to a Maida Vale session and appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Bayles formerly fronted indie folk bands Last Night’s TV and Low Moor Rising.

Day Hustle – “Dreams”

The origins of Day Hustle date back to 2012 when musicians Steven Weston and Lisa Hickox met in Boston. After performing throughout New England with the band Rich People Food, the two parted ways. Hickox moved from Brooklyn after receiving a music production degree from Berklee College of Music, while New Hampshire native Weston, stayed in Boston.

After a year apart, the pair reconnected over their love of good old fashioned indie rock and began writing the songs for the EP, sending ideas over the internet, and eventually coming up with a catalog of music. “We united west coast twang with east coast grit, both musically and aesthetically,” Hickox says. Soon after, they began recording in a Brooklyn basement, she says. “It was in this basement, riddled with graffiti, that we made out the words ‘Day’ and ‘Hustle’ in the cluster of illegible tags.”

Alice Sweet Alice – “Daredevil”

Longtime Kansas City, Missouri band Alice Sweat Alice grinds out genre-bending music that resists description or categorization – yet sounds intimately familiar. There are definite rock influence with overtones of electronica, jazz, blues and post punk that explode with elements of progressive rock. “Always killer, with no filler,” the band’s motto, is fitting for their newest release.

ASA took a hiatus beginning in 2014 when band leader Scott Martinez traveled to California to care for his father. That experience caused him to rethink ASA’s direction, resulting in a new and impressive nine-song album, Viola Organista and Other Impossible Dreams, which marks a new beginning for the group.

ASA has shared the stage with such notable acts as Collective Soul, Adrenaline Mob, Chuck Mosley (Faith No More), Blameshift, Mushroomhead, Hurt, and are fans of artists and bands like Killing Joke, Cocteau Twins, Bowie, Warpaint, Portishead, Garbage, and Pink Floyd.

Radar Love – Ursa Major

Nineteen-year-old Toronto musician and producer Joseph Chusid, who records as Ursa Major, has made quite a name for himself on Soundcloud in a relatively short time, thanks to a series of single releases that feature his meticulously produced grooves that range in genres and include mixtures of R&B, soul and psychedelic rock. His terrific debut EP, Lo-Fi Sky, is out now, and building steam online.

Lo-Fi Sky is a project that looks at the mundane and stagnant aspects of life and chooses to delve into the natural world, even though it is constantly in flux and unstable,” Chusid explains.

In just two weeks, a newly released track about insomnia, “5am,” has already racked up nearly 200 Likes on SC; earlier this year, his track, “Dusk,” garnered over 45,000 plays and nearly 1,000 Likes. Toronto’s Eden Warsaw Premieres New Video

Singer, songwriter and musician Eden Warsaw knows how to write and record a killer catchy pop song that doesn’t sound like the cookie cutter crap on the radio, and which is also not as unrefined and amateurish as a lot of indie pop. In fact, as a multi-instrumentalist too, Warsaw is totally immersed in every aspect of his music, which is usually a good sign of an artist who really takes his work seriously.

The breath of his talents are evident in the new video, “Searching For Someone,” the title track for his debut LP. The song starts off with a heavy bass drum effect that drops suddenly, giving give way to light piano keys, summery-feeling synth keys, bright, strumming guitar chords, bubbling bass and remarkably melodic hooks, all encompassing Warsaw’s well-honed, strong vocals, which at times can range from semi-falsetto to modal register – a benefit many singers wish they could pull off.

“The song has a good summer vibe to drive around to with the windows down,” he says. “The inspiration for the debut album was to create an audio sci-fi or futuristic love story from start to finish, using experimental sounds that are relatable and current.”

After enjoying a kind of mini DIY hit with his single, “Diamonds,” in 2014, the Toronto artist took his time – nearly two years – honing his sound; writing and recording new songs; reworking them and mixing, and along with his fellow band members, devoting himself to perfecting the sound and stepping up his game, encouraged along by avid fans of his earlier work.

After two years of writing and recording, Eden Warsaw, along with his band, had a bunch of songs to work with and release, whch they’ve been doing. In addition to guitarist and vocalist Warsaw, band members include Phanat Chan (guitar/synth); Kyle Densmore (drums), and Troy Donaldson (bass).

“This actual rollout wouldn’t be possible without the guys in the band,” Warsaw says. “They are massively talented musicians that heard the music in studio and convinced me to finally start releasing everything. We are all like brothers.”

The guys will be performing at Canadian Music Week from May 2nd – May 8th. Visit the Facebook page.

MOSAICS – “Year of Valor”

San Francisco electronic trio MOSAICS, who built a fairly large following a couple of years ago with standout singles like “Soju,” recently dropped the title track from an upcoming EP, set to drop on May 20th.

On the newest single, “Year of Valor,” the band, featuring founders Devon Kelts (guitar) and Tyler Hill (production), and new vocalist Maryam Sadeghian, fuse experimental electronic music with pop and acoustic guitar elements that guide Sadeghian’s sultry vocals to merge wonderfully with the instrumentation.

“Maryam’s tantalizingly sultry vocal arrangements, her confidence, and her professionalism,” Kelts said, “have been hugely beneficial to the success of the Year of Valor single, and strike just the right balance with the darker aspects of our sound.” Already the track has garnered thousands of plays online.

DTHPDL – “The Future”

DTHPDL, or DeathPodal, first gained attention back in 2009 with the electro pop cassette release of Exu_Wowin. The DTHPDL project is the brainchild of Findon (a village in West Sussex, England) singer, songwriter and musician Alastair J. Chiversand.

Over the past couple of years, he set out to recruit band members D. MacDonald, Humdrum Jetset and Ross Taylor. The band recently completed a tour of Scotland, and have also opened for Team Ghost (ex-M83), YAK, Shield Your Eyes, Paws, and RM Hubbardand Islet, and are due to play the Restless Natives Festival in Glasgow with Blanck Mass, Tim Hecker and Future of the Left.

The band dropped the new EP, The Future, a few days ago in the UK, writing that it is an “exploration of weird, electronic pop, post punk drones and belief,” with the standout title track and their new video.

Dead Day Revolution – “Needles”

It’s good to see that there are still plenty of talented bands recording balls-to-wall rock like Los Angeles duo Dead Day Revolution, whose new album, On Our Own, features thrilling rockers like “Vampire Blues”; riveting, stadium-ready tracks like “Children of The Night,” and the Pearl Jam-sounding, “Ghost,” as well as unusually titled blazers like “Dancing on the Corner of Death” (whatever that means).

And yet Dead Day Revolution can also lay down a mean ballad-like slow dancer, “Down The Road,” definitely one of the standout tracks on the album. But it is the more accessible pop rocker, “Needles,” with it’s upbeat rhythm and melodic hooks, that will likely appeal to the much wider audience. Either way, the members of Dead Day Revolution – Skeeter Joplin (drums) and Mike Sandoz (guitar, vocals) – are not rookie musicians, and considering that they have built up a ‘following’ of more than 94,000 Likes, many agree.

The band’s debut single, “Lead Me To The Water,” is a driving country rock track (but not like the Billboard cookie-cutter crap) featuring a wailing steel guitar and an upbeat, melodic rhythm. Other songs on the band’s new album include the precisely-picked acoustic gem, “Where Did You Go?” and the contentious “Bone To Pick.” Todd Carter will kick off a week-long tour from Pittsburgh through the midwest ending in Columbus, Ohio on May 23.

It’s a weird but enchanting world Voys creates in the video, which has garnered more than 14,000 views in three weeks, which isn’t so bad for any music video these days, as well as more than 4K Likes on FB – a heck of a lot more than a lot of artists have. Linda Draper – “Modern Day Decay”

Brooklyn based musician Linda Draper is set to release her eighth album, Modern Day Decay, this Friday, April 29th, featuring the standout title track. The album was funded through crowdsourcing on PledgeMusic. The funds allowed for only two days of studio time with help from Grammy award-winning mixing engineer Geoff Sanoff (Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Cat Power), who ended up mixing “Modern Day Decay” at Little Steven’s studio, Renegade Nation.

“This project was a collaborative process,” Draper said. “Every step of the way and I am grateful for the support that has led me to where I am today.”

Draper’s first earned some notoriety in 2001 with the release of her debut album, Ricochet, produced by Kramer, who is famously known for his work with Low, Galaxie 500, Lou Reed and Urge Overkill, among others. Not surprisingly, Draper grew up in a musical family, and has studied everything from Bach to pop before beginning to write her own songs as a teen.

Jersey City instrumental musician Kristaps Locmelis offers just that on his experimental electronic “Shelling Out For A Tiki Bar,” which might remind some of a cross between space rock and Martin Denny. R.I.P. Prince – 1958 – 2016

Music lovers around the world are in shock today at the sad news of Prince’s passing. Here are just a few of the highlights of an amazing career – an artist who single-handedly made it safe for artists to cross and mix genres and to be totally original and humble – not to mention to stand up to the record industry. RIP Prince, the master genre-bender. Influence on indie rock? Immeasurable.

Check out Prince’s guitar solo of George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ during 2004 RNR Hall of Fame. And don’t miss Sandra Bernhard’s revealing dance video for “Little Red Corvette.”

Quote of the Week: Caitlin Jenner, eat your heart out grrl – you could never be half the woman Prince was

Prince would laugh at that because part of what made him so great was that he was not afraid to be outrageous and express himself in such a flamboyant way at a time when it was not OK at all (height of the AIDS epidemic) to dress like he did. Prince, though, made it cool.

NOTE – By the way, YouTube: Please remove the karaoke tracks of Prince’s songs. Let’s have one thing that’s scared. He wanted his music shared, but he didn’t want it bastardized.

Radar Love – Tucson’s Prolific Teen Musician Christopher Tom

It’s not a stretch to say that the Arizona teen Christopher Tom isn’t exactly your average 15-year-old. He’s actually a prolific singer, songwriter and musician.

Since the age of 13, Tom has been on a mission to perfect his songwriting craft. But he didn’t want just quality. He set out on quantity as well – writing upwards of 200 songs. And in stark contrast, Tom released his debut, self-titled EP last August, featuring only six of those songs. For the EP, he not only wrote the songs, but performed and recorded all of the instruments, and then mixed and mastered every last note, resulting in 15 minutes of frenzied and exuberant indie rock and synth pop.

On one of his newest tracks, “Every Friday (Dance),” the young muthusiast pulls out the dance beats with shimmering synth arrangements, pop rock guitar chords and his signature adolescent male vocals. Borrowing from many different influences, including The Beatles, The Strokes, Weezer, Gorillaz and Beach House, Tom places a huge emphasis on melody and hooks. We urge folks to take a little time to check out some of the other tracks from his self-titled EP on his Bandcamp page.

The uptempo pop rock song, “The Ballad of Joey Domino,” is yet another example of Tom’s amazingly diverse musical palette and sensibilities in collaboration with his friend ‘Mark E’. Another song, “That’s Not How It Works,” is totally a Strokes-influenced song from top to bottom. Next, the silly pop rock track “Don’t Call On Me,” (in which his adolescent boy’s vocal range is tested successfully), is immediately reminiscent of They Might Be Giants, and “Candle Boy,” with its twinkly pop melodies and softer vocals.

The standout track from his debut EP is “The Coast,” a song that probably has a wider audience with its simplistic melodic hooks, regular rhythm changes, programmed beats, layered vocals and flowing keyboards. Tom isn’t going to take over the world – just yet (there are a lot of Kinks to work out), but for a 15-year-old, he definitely shows a tremendous musical progression and penchant for variety; he appears to deliberately make it so that each of the songs is completely individual, whereas we have all heard EPs/LPs where all of the songs sound pretty much the same.
