The What’s Hot Right Now mixtape series has been a huge hit with IRC’s regular readers and visitors from around the world. It’s been a few weeks since we did a ‘what’s hot’ mixtape. For those of you not familiar with this mixtape series, we analyze a number of aggregate sites – like Hypem.com and Elbo.ws – and our own stats to demonstrate which tracks – whether they are from upcoming or new releases – are the hottest on the web right now.

Chromeo, who we got to see at last weekend’s Outside Lands festival in San Francisco, dominates this list because the demand for their music is ginormous. Also, check out hot new stuff from Royksopp, Arcade Fire, The Vaselines (first new songs in two decades!), No Age, Panda Bear, Small Black and others.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we did a What’s Hot Right Now playlist mix. Even though we post hot songs all of the time, WHRN combines what the hottest indie songs are on the web over the past few days, by calculating a combination of top songs on IRC, Hypem, Elbo.ws, and a few other popular ‘hot now’ blogs.

Also, the WHRN playlists are not based necessarily on new releases, since many songs make the rounds before they are released; in fact, most are from upcoming, and much anticipated, new releases.

“Stranded” The Walkmen

What’s Hot Right Now, Vol. IV: Apparatjik, Arcade Fire, Ceo, The Drums, Sleigh Bells, Klaxons, Wild Nothing, Four Tet, Crystal Castles

Arcade Fire leaked the album art of the Aug. 3 release, 'The Suburbs'

By popular demand, here’s another mixtape of songs that are hot right now on the web, according to sites like Hypem and Elbo.ws, as well as some of our favorite blogs, and songs that have been popular on IRC during the week. With the web release (leak?) of two new Arcade Fire songs late last week, it’s no surprise that the Montreal indie rock band were among the most widely played and blogged about band this week.

This playlist mix also features a web-made hit song from the ‘new and rising’ band, Ceo, the latest rising track from break-through duo Sleigh Bells, and a fresh single from one of indie rock’s best bands, The Drums. Also, don’t miss Thurston Moore’s (Sonic Youth) sweet remix of a Crystal Castles song and a Caribou remix of Four Tet, plus, popular tracks right now from Klaxons, Common Prayer, Wild Nothing, Born Ruffians, Teenage Fanclub,  How to Destroy Angels, Toro Y Moi, The Futureheads, and tracks that were popular on IRC this week (as you can see for yourself on our Hype page), including Coltrane Motion, Hooray for Earth, Unbunny, Big Tree, and Active Child. Enjoy, and spread the love.

For those of you who don’t follow us on Twitter or join us on Facebook, you probably didn’t hear that  Coldplay member Guy Barryman‘s musical side project, Apparatjik, have just announced a free EP download ahead of their upcoming debut LP.  The three-song EP, that includes a “premix”, and not-so-great cover art (wtf, it’s free), is called 4 Can Keep A Secret If 3 Of Them Are Dead.  The other members of Apparatjik are A-Ha’s Magne Furuholmen, Mew’s Jonas Bjerre and Martin Terefe. Although it’s not hot yet because it’s so new, we thought it wise to kick-off this mix with the new Apparatjik song, “Antlers”.

“The Suburbs” Arcade Fire

“Forever & Ever Amen” The Drums

“Come With Me” Ceo

What’s Hot Right Now, Vol. II: Suckers, Polock, Band of Horses, Dr. Dog, Tokyo Police Club, The Crookes, Atmosphere & More

Two weeks ago, we launched a mix, What’s Hot Right Now, which turned out to be a huge success. We used a combination of metrics, including our own site stats, as well as lists from sources such as The Hype Machine and Elbo.ws, to determine the songs included in the playlist below. Because you asked for more, we’re bringing it. Ray Davies (The Kinks) said it the best: “Give the people what they want.”

Some artists and bands that would otherwise be in this mix are not because we already featured them in Recent Releases We Almost Missed, the Feetz To Da Beatz playlist, and this week’s Best New Releases mix. This mix starts off with a new track from the increasingly popular band Suckers, followed by a fantastic song from Polock, a band from Valencia, Spain, that are definitely one of our IRC Bands to Watch in 2010. On the spin after Polock is a brand new, somewhat infectuous, tune, “Drunk Girls,” from LCD Soundsystem‘s rumored “last” album, which is yet untitled – as far as we know.

This mix also includes fresh tracks from Dr. Dog, Band of Horses, Tokyo Police Club, and the UK buzz band The Crookes, who also performed three shows at last month’s South By Southwest festival in Austin. Waiting for word from the band on a full length. The song featured here, “Back Street Lovers,” was a fairly popular track in the UK in recent months.

Don’t miss the mashup of Mos Dub by Mos Def with Desmond Dekker & The Aces, a ripping rocker from the relatively unknown band Earl Greyhound, and new music from Blitzen Trapper, brother/sister duo, Angus and Julia Stone and a remastered track from one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, Elliott Smith (RIP).

“Black Sheep” – Suckers from Wild Smile (drops June 8th)

“Fireworks”Polock from Getting Down From The Trees (drops April 26th)

“Drunk Girls” LCD Soundsystem from untitled LP

“Compliments” Band of Horses from Infinite Arms (drops May 18th)

“Ghost And The Witness”Earl Greyhound from Suspicious Package (out April 13th)

“History Town”Mos Def with Desmond Dekker & The Aces (Mos Dub Mashup)

“Jackie Wants a Black Eye”Dr. Dog from Shame, Shame (out now)

“Back Street Lovers”The Crookes

“Breakneck Speed”Tokyo Police Club from Champ (drops June 7th)

“Shoulda Known”Atmosphere

“Heaven and Earth” Blitzen Trapper from Destroyer of the Void (drops June 8th)

“Big Jet Plane”Angus and Julia Stone from Down The Way

“Angeles” Elliott Smith from Roman Candles (reissue)
