This playlist features 2021 video singles from PLSR; Adar Alfandari, POENO, Braison Cyrus and Fortitude Valley.

WHO: PLSR featuring Brandon Mordecai (Keys and Synths); Andrew Royal (Guitar); Joel Kaiser (Vocals)
WHAT: Video/single “Heat” from Pleaser
WHERE: Nashville, TN
WHEN: Aug. 28 2021
GENRE(S): rock,pop,lofi,synt,altr

Nashville-based virtual band, PLSR, presents the fourth single, “Heat,” off of their upcoming EP, Pleaser.

The song integrates synthetic elements from Mordecai and wonderfully mangled guitars from Royal to create a bubbly, lo-fi bed for the vocals of frontman Joel Kaiser.

According to the band, “Heat”‘s lyrics “explore the sudden onset of claustrophobia in a close relationship.”

Self-identified as “a dadaist alt-rock group” the trio formed PLSR in 2019 to write songs about three fictional characters living on a space ship PLSR.

The songs chronicle “the various misadventures of Zyon, Jasper, and Dez” caught in a dystopian future. The bands top influences include Gorillaz, Radiohead, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

WHO: Adar Alfandari
WHAT: “Wonder” single and video from Gold Dust
WHERE: Rehovot, Israel
WHEN: July 31, 2021
GENRE(S): pop,folk,altf

Adar Alfandari is a 25 y/o singer-songwriter from Rehovot, Israel who writes music in both Hebrew and English in various genres- mainly indie-rock and folk.

His debut album, Gold Dust, is an anthology of writings revolving around Alfandari’s languages and genres. He says “Wonder” is “the album’s "love song" written in my own kind of way, and is more of an indie-pop song, with a C part that gives it an alternative twist.”

Alfandari previously played with Dor Hamabul along with his brother. They released an album, gigged around Israel and received a number of good indicators.

He is a fan of, and influenced by, musical artists and bands like Hozier, The tallest man on earth, The Arcs, Arctic Monkeys, and Father John Misty.

WHO: POENO
WHAT: “Alive” Song and Music Video (Lived by… (EP))
WHERE: Dublin, Ireland
WHEN: June 6, 2021
GENRE(S): alt, rock

“We are outsiders done with old, useless, ill-fitting moulds,” says Dublin guitarist and vocalist Adam Matthews together with his bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Liam Corbett.

“We find turning points even in the most difficult of times. We can take control and cast-off oppositional forces. We can declare that we are here, awake, and new. We can begin again, alive.”

That sounds like a pandemic breakdown, and breakthrough, of sorts.

“We write songs out of our own necessity. There is an urgency in the expression… simmering in electronic soundscapes while anthemic statements coalesced.”

The duo dropped their Lived By EP in August. They are influenced primarily by Kate Bush, Matthew Good, Joni Mitchell, Trent Reznor, Depeche Mode, and Radiohead.

WHO: Fortitude Valley featuring Laura Kovic (vocals, guitar, key); Daniel Ellis (lead guitar); Greg Ullyart (bass); Nathan Stephens Griffin (drums)
WHAT: “Cassini” music video
WHEN: September 24, 2021
WHERE: Durham, United Kingdom
GENRE(S): rock,pop

The video single “Cassini” is a scorching mix of slacker-rock and power-pop that the band says recalls “the eponymous satellite’s lonely final days and fiery self-sacrifice,” referring to the 2017 expiration of the Cassini-Huygens space research mission that began in 1997.

The four-piece band, known as Fortitude Valley, is a dynamic outlet for the songwriting talents of Durham-based Brisbanite Laura Kovic.

Having spent the majority of her musical career playing keyboards in various bands, Kovic’s awkward power-pop sound will likely be welcomed by fans of The Beths, Weezer or The Weakerthans. Martha’s Daniel Ellis on lead guitar and Nathan Stephens Griffin on drums along with Night Flowers’ Greg Ullyart on bass.

Braison Cyrus – “Disappear”

If you’re looking for an easy-going Americana-flavored singer-songwriter, and you don’t already know Nashville artist Braison Cyrus‘ music, check out this track and more of his music online.

For us, the fact that his parents are celebrities – and he is one himself in his own right – does not calculate into assessing his music one way or another.

The opening energy of his song, “Disappear,” is touching, but once the steel guitar and the piano enter the picture, well then, it’s a different level of good – it’s great.

Altogether, the track feels like it’s from another era but with a modern production aesthetic that really makes it pop beautifully. The story is about faithfulness to someone in the midst of the everyday grind – its salt-of-the-earth philosophy and country-rock charm make it a keeper.

14-year-old vocalist Nell Smith and Flaming Lips cover Nick Cave Classics

When we first watched this new music video featuring 14-year-old Nell Smith fronting The Flaming Lips, we were blown away.

This amazingly talented teenager could just be a future sensation in the making.

The way Smith commands this spectacular cover of Nick Cave‘s “Ship Song” is so impressive and powerful for ‘a kid’ that it’s a rare thing to experience. But here she is.

Smith’s vocals are deeply touching and beyond her years as far as maturity. It’s no wonder that the band wanted to record with her.

Additionally, to take on such a classic track is ballsy enough for any vocalist. So, there’s that too. It’s such a fresh and personal take on Cave’s classic from the perspective of a young teen girl and thanks to the impeccable recording and production skills of the Lips.

How’d Smith and The Lips Meet?

Growing up in Canada, Smith regularly attended Lips’ concerts always wearing a parrot costume.

Three years ago, the story goes, Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne noticed Smith (then 11 years old) at a show in Calgary and sang a David Bowie cover to her and Smith sang right along with Coyne.

Through her father, Coyne and Smith maintained a long-distance friendship. Coyne encouraged her to learn the guitar and write her own songs.

A Cache of Cave Covers

Not long afterward, Smith and the Lips joined forces specifically to record a batch of Cave covers.

The result is the new album, Where the Viaduct Looms, set to drop November 26.

On his way to record with the band in Oklahoma in 2019, Coyne encouraged Smith to record vocal tracks of Cave songs and email them to him. The intrepid young singer did just that. Coyne and the band produced the final tracks resulting in nine altogether.

Earlier this year, Smith and the band released their first music video – a theatrical cover of Cave’s “Girl in Amber” with director Alex Hanson.

“Nell shows a remarkable understanding of the song, a sense of dispassion that is both beautiful and chilling. I just love it. I’m a fan” – Wayne Coyne

On his website, Coyne wrote: “This version of ‘Girl in Amber’ is just lovely, I was going to say Nell Smith inhabits the song, but that’s wrong, rather she vacates the song, in a way that I could never do,” he said. “I always found it difficult to step away from this particular song and sing it with its necessary remove, just got so twisted up in the words, I guess. Nell shows a remarkable understanding of the song, a sense of dispassion that is both beautiful and chilling. I just love it. I’m a fan.”

A Promising Future

As this new video/song proves, Smith is talented, knows it, and is determined to grow as an artist. It would not surprise us one bit if she were to start getting inquiries from A&Rs and label execs.

Hopefully, however, Smith will not sign any deal, and/or her parents won’t consent, in any form. Firstly, she’s only 13. Secondly, staying in school, of course, is priority one. Nevertheless, a recording or video here and there could be just the right formula, especially now that hundreds of thousands (eventually) – millions? – will see this video.

Even if no such numbers are achieved, the facts remain: a talented Flaming Lips teenage fan records an album of Cave covers with the actual Flaming Lips as the backing band.

Of course, leave it up to Coyne and the other Lips to be original, daring, and different, and more importantly, are good and have fun, well into their middle years.

New Video Singles from Parquet Courts, Low, Dean Wareham, Sand & Stones, Pip Blom

parquet-courts

A bunch of new video singles have been dropping left and right. These are five more we think you’ll dig:

Parquet Courts – New York, New York
Low – Duluth, Minnesota
Dean Wareham – Los Angeles, California
Sand & Stones – Stockholm, Sweden
Pip Blom – Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Last week Parquet Courts announced a new album, Sympathy for Life, and shared its first video single, “Walking at a Downtown Pace.” The frantic video features New York City street life and was directed by photographer Daniel Arnold.

Sympathy for Life is due to drop on October 22 via Rough Trade. It is the followup to the band’s well-received 2018 album Wide Awake!.

This week indie veterans Low dropped a third single, “More,” from the band’s upcoming September release Hey What.

Accompanied by a music video directed by Julie Casper Roth, the strange video is described in the press release as:  “metaphorically explores the Sisyphean task of dismantling structural oppression, through gender biases.”

The upcoming release will be the band’s thirteenth album and the third time they’ve worked with producer B.J. Burton .

“The new album finds the group focusing on their craft, staying out of the fray, and holding fast their faith to find new ways to express the discord and delight of being alive, to turn the duality of existence into hymns we can share,” according to the press release.

“These 10 pieces—each built around their own instantaneous, undeniable hook—are turbocharged by the vivid textures that surround them. The ineffable, familiar harmonies of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker break through the chaos like a life raft. Layers of distorted sound accrete with each new verse—building, breaking, colossal then restrained, a solemn vow only whispered. There will be time to unravel and attribute meaning to the music and art of these times, but the creative moment looks FORWARD, with teeth.”

Indie rock trail-blazer Dean Wareham (Luna, Galaxie 500) will drop a new solo album – I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. We have the first single, “The Past is Our Plaything.”

“‘The Past Is Our Plaything’ was recorded at a studio on Stinson Beach, just north of San Francisco, in November 2020,” Wareham said. ” The song sorta grew out of observations by Julian Barnes in my favorite book last year—the Man In the Red Coat—about a collection of dandies, drug addicts, artists and writers in belle epoque France and England.”

Wareham’s last solo album was released in 2014. Since he’s worked on the soundtrack for Mistress America with his wife, Britta Phillips, and reunited and toured with Luna.

“The hard thing is just to start,” Wareham says of the gap between solo albums. “When I sat down and did it, the songs came pretty quickly.”

Papercuts’ Jason Quever produced and played on the album, which also features Phillips on bass, vocals, and keys, and Roger Brogan on drums.

In terms of the album’s title, I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A., and what he would say if he actually met the mayor of Los Angeles, where Wareham and Phillips have been based since 2013, Wareham responds: “It’s gonna happen. But the answer is right there too—I have nothing to say.”

The under-the-radar Swedish duo, Sand & Stones, has released a new video track of which the band says: “This is a contemporary song about the opportunity to reconnect with new aspects of yourself and bring awareness to what truly matters. In these changing times, things rise to the surface and by reconnecting to our true nature we will easily adjust to the new lifestyle we seek. You can find all answers within, in love, let´s live.”

The song is a seductive mix of dream pop and Americana guitar picking. Very unique and interesting. Most importantly, it works very nicely; a video track that sticks with you.

The video itself is nothing particularly exciting but it does fit with the audio.

Amsterdam‘s four-piece outfit Pip Blom has dropped a new video single, “You Don’t Want This,” head of an album release in October titled Welcome Break.

Director Sara Elzinga said: “When I first heard ‘You Don’t Want This,’ I recognized the feeling of self-consciousness; knowing that people have a certain way of looking at you, that does not necessarily comply with the image you have of yourself. The concept of a Matryoshka doll then stuck in my head, having these multiple versions of yourself that are hidden at first. The set reminds us of a dollhouse, of someone who is so comfortable in their own scenery, they forget to look at the world outside of the room. Though rather than making a music video about anxiety, I wanted the video to be about self-acceptance. Smiling back at yourself, instead of constantly criticizing which is something people tend to do.”

Pip Blom, the name of the band’s frontwoman, is backed by her brother, Tender Blom. Of 20 bedroom songs recorded by Pip, 16 of those were ripped as demos.

Middle Kids drop new video and North American tour dates

The popular Sydney indie rock trio Middle Kids has dropped a new music video for the track, “Stacking Chairs”.

The video features offbeat humor with a literal and stylized interpretation of the track’s lyrics. Colors of red and orange dominate the video’s texture and an interesting theme develops about miniature modeling.

In other band news, the Australian band will kick off a North American tour (first in two years), starting with a month-long national tour beginning in Camden, Connecticut and concluding in Nashville.

Locked down in Sydney for nearly two months, Middle Kids will be the first Australia-based band to tour the U.S. since the onset of the pandemic.

The band released the sophomore album, Today We’re The Greatest, this past March via Domino Records.

Watch U.K.’s Snapped Ankles new video ‘Shifting Basslines Of The Cornucopians’

Snapped Ankles, a group of anonymous British musicians who dress up in what looks like ghillie suits designed by Matthew Barney, have elaborate mythology around their new record which involves a character called The Cornucopian.

This is their avatar of the capitalist glutton, the hedonistic striver who reaches for material luxuries they can hardly afford. The character is given voice in this song, a crazed carnival tune that sounds like it should be signifying a good time but actually feels sweaty, paranoid, and unbalanced.

The vocals strongly resemble that of The Fall’s Mark E. Smith in tonality, phrasing, and sentiment as they spit bitterly sarcastic lines such as the opening “it’s a great time to be alive if only you’ve got some funds.”

The ideas they’re working with could come off a bit too didactic in lesser hands but this lot stays on the right side of satire and wisely place their greatest emphasis on rhythm and texture. You never need to pay attention to the words or look into their context to understand exactly what kind of bad – but still fun! – vibe they’re putting across here.

UK indie band San Pedro Collective drop new EP and video

MANCHESTER, England – San Pedro Collective return with an EP full of flavour and funky tempo. You can’t ignore this group of old school Mancunian music heads who have hunkered down through lockdown to produce a piece of funky musical art from the mind of Rikki Turner. Wayne AF Carey introduces you to some more gems from the masters…

San Pedro Collective was brought together by the enigmatic front man  Rikki Turner whose previous musical offerings include ‘Paris Angels’ and ‘The Hurt’ where he was joined by Keith Higgins on guitar / bass.

Josh Hall has picked up lead guitar duties for ‘In Your Way’ & ‘Time’ tempering early rock n’ roll instincts with passion for blues and funky playing. Justin Leonard keeps the songs moving with the melodic rhythm with the drums being in the capable hands of Simon Wolstencroft (AKA Funky Si), best known for The Fall and joining his old school classmate Ian Brown on the Stone Roses frontman’s second solo album ‘Golden Greats’.

The final cherry on the already perfectly iced cake is singer Jasmine Needham whose haunting vocals are featured on this track that effortlessly weave in and about of the rhythm and beats.

Frontman Turner had this to say about ‘In Your Way’.
“For me the remix of In your Way was written and rewritten until there was no more blood to bleed out no tears …..just hope of reconciliation”

The lead single for radio is the remix by Antnee Egerton from electrofunk soul-sonic collective The Winachi Tribe who had this to say about the phenomenal remix.
“I wanted to capture the emotion of the lyrics by giving it a injection of rock n roll with a dance groove to give it a hands in the air anthemic feel when the chorus hits.”

For fucks sake, can you get better than this group of mavericks producing an EP of sublime soulful grooves? ‘You’ is a mighty mellow affair full of joyous trumpet and the direction of Justin Leonard giving Jasmine Needham that platform to air her amazing smooth as silk vocals that give you vibes of The Sneaker Pimps, Moloko and the select few vocalists that were around during the trip hop era. Rikki does his Manc spoken word to great effect as usual. I’ve just reviewed the Rico re-issues (he played trombone by the way you purists) and that trumpet sound is reminiscent of the old ska movement that Jerry Dammers pumped into the system. Keyboards abound kick off the brilliant In My Way that ups the tempo with that Funky Si drumbeat kicking in with a beautiful mix of trance house vocals again from Jasmine. Absolutely loving that Josh Hall guitar sound flowing throughout with the familiar Keith Higgins bassline banging it on the nail.

‘Time’ is just fuckin’ messing with you. A proper laid back drum and bass led beauty of a track. The vocals are perfection with Jasmine and Rikki enjoying the moment with a funky as fuck soulful track that tugs at the heartstrings. You can hear the input from the legend of Inder Goldfinger stamping his trademark percussion all over it. As for Funky Si and Keith Higgins? A match made in heaven. Winachi Tribe visionary Antnee Egerton crawls over the remix of In Your Way with a proper techno house Hacienda vibe flowing right through. On one listen it’s a club classic sprawling with a top bassline and a rock guitar riff to boost the overall sound.

This is happy music for happy people who want to get out and party. I’ve got a massive respect for Rikki Turner who has always wanted to push boundaries in sound and has grouped together some of the cream of solid musicians to create the wonder of San Pedro Collective. Let old dogs lie? Fuck off. This is premium music from passionate musicians who aren’t arsed about the mainstream yet might just find that hole through the loop of hoops you have to jump through to get attention from the majors. A stunning summer flecked EP that will take you through the shit of Government mind control even for a good 20 minutes!

Video from Bad Fractals ‘Disco Devils’

Bad Fractals live on stage

We are delighted to premiere the new single from London based Bad Fractals, released digitally today and available via Bandcamp the music is a hedonistic mix of acid punk, the swagger of malevolent music hall, and trailer Trash distorted blues. The track weaves its way from juddering burnt strum und drang that reminded me of perhaps Inca Babies into an atmospheric breakdown ahead of a collapsing onslaught of gleefully angular darkly twisted pop. The accompanying video is a suitably eye-popping kaleidoscopic delight that deconstructs masculinity in a mescaline-soaked barn dance!

Disco Devils’ was initially composed by band members Bang Crosby and Astral Oz in the toilet of a squatted mental hospital. The initial idea was to channel the seam of sleaze that runs through the music industry and mock it into non-existence, but soon it spread to all facets of male manipulation of women. Specifically, it focuses on men who promise the world until they have their way.

The video focuses on the weaknesses of such men, mocking their inadequacies as Bang has a full-blown mental breakdown, before resuming his role and an increasingly desperate womanizer. It doesn’t end well!

The band has confirmed that they have completed recording their as yet untitled debut album, and it is currently being mixed by legendary Killing Joke member Youth whose production credits include Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, The Orb, Pink Floyd amongst many others.

Tame Impala shares cryptic new video teaser ‘Rushium’

Tame Impala took to socials to share a cryptic new video teasing… something. The clip is certainly an announcement for new content of some sort, but we’re left to speculate as to what it exactly could be. Some of the only concrete details revealed was a release date of “09/21,” a hashtag of #AionWell.

The video is soundtracked by The Slow Rush track “Posthumous Forgiveness,” however it appeared to have a tweaked mix, leading many to believe that this is a teaser of a follow-up B-Sides release. Considering that each Tame Impala studio album has released a companion B-Sides & Remixes EP, this perhaps might be the most likely.

There are also others who are suggesting that this is a tour announcement. On the freshly launched AionWell website, there’s an image of a bottle of “Rushium” with some fine print that reads “S.R. Tour.” If you take the survey about time on that site, you’re prompted to enter your info for a mailing list.

Fans on social media are already considering other possibilities as well. Some believe that this is a trailer for the “Posthumous Forgiveness” music video, however it seems a bit odd to announce a music video release three months in advance.
