Songs In Dee Mail: Nashville Duo Pinstripe 45s Serve Up Indie Pop

A bit of a bizarre name for a modern pop rock duo, Pinstripes 45’s (sounds more like some kind of barber shop quartet, huh?) from Nashville have a catchy melodic sound woven in layers of harmonies, hand clapping, acoustic guitar and accomplished vocal arrangements that lend influences to bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and artists like Bob Dylan.

The duo, comprised of multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Marshall Hanbury Jr. and stand-up bassist Gina Black had the good fortune to work with producer Jacquire King whose resume includes Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse and Tom Waits. Songs from their forthcoming (date not provided) release include the pop ballad “I Don’t Know What Hit Me”, and the Neil Finn-sounding track “Living Times Like These.”

Thanks to Everyone

We just want to say to thank you to so many of you for sending your music, regularly visiting the blog and in general making it possible to do what we do; maybe someday soon, this can become a real job rather than a hobby (this is a very ‘indie’ operation).

If that happens, the amount of coverage and cool indie things we can do will increase significantly. There’s still a lot of great music we have all never heard, or have yet to hear, and it’s our mission to bring as much of it to you as possible in an easy and concise way.

Help Spread the Word!

We appreciate your help in promoting the site on the web, sharing it with friends and whatever else you can think of. We don’t make any money doing this, so your volunteerism, if you will – like adding any post from IRC to Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon, MySpace and linking to IRC from your own site, etc, is appreciated greatly. You’re participation helps give us the juice needed to keep up our faith that this is all worthwhile.

You can also help by adding links from IRC to your favorite social networking sites (like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, etc.) and signing up for the “Feed Me Indie” RSS feed and sharing the site with friends.

Starting as a hobby in 2006 to share music with friends, IRC has grown to a worldwide audience of thousands of people every day. In fact, daily traffic to this site has tripled from the winter of 2008/9 to the summer/fall of 2009, with over 100,000 unique visitors a month. Thanks especially to the thousands of regular, loyal readers who appreciate what we are trying to do, and hope to do in the future.

If you’d like to add a link to us, or just bookmark the site with your favorite bookmarker, please do. Each time someone does this, it spreads the love and makes us want to post more. :)

If you’re linking to a specific page, please use anchor text like “Animal Collective” or “Best New Indie”, depending on what the content is. That helps everyone out a lot!

2008 Music Festival News, Line-Ups, Media and Features

Based on visitor traffic, comments and your email requests, people want more music festival news, updates, line-ups and more for 2008 music festivals – perhaps the biggest year for music festivals worldwide.

Coachella, less than two weeks away, has just added Prince as a headliner. It’s really helpful that he returned to his original namesake rather than that symbol (thanks Prince). Also the Coachella line-up rumors that Goldfrapp and Aphex Twin have been added have been confirmed.

The Virgin Mobile Festival, set for August 9-10, 2008 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, has yet to release the official, full line-up of artists for this year’s festival, but the headliners already announced include Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots.

Get more details at the Virgin Festival official website.

Tickets for the UK Reading and Leeds Festival sold out in record time. To see why, here’s the official line-up for 2008.

Headliners for both fests include include Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, The Killers, Metallica, The Raconteurs, Editors, Bloc Party, Manic Street Preachers, Justice and Bullet for My Valentine. The dates of the festivals are from August 22-26, 2008.

Organizers have canceled the Isle of Skye Festival in Scotland due to mounting debts. Nice work, guys!
flaminglipsmars The Flaming Lips have announced that they plan to debut their long-awaited movie “Christmas on Mars” at this year’s Sasquatch Festival in Washington State on Sunday, May 25. The following day, Monday, May 26, the Flaming Lips will close out the festival with a predictably flashy set.

Other headliners set to play the Northwest’s largest outdoor festival – and voted by Pollstar as the best outdoor fest in the U.S. – include Modest Mouse, The Cure, Death Cab For Cutie, Built to Spill, Rodrigo y Gabriela, MIA, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Mars Volta, REM and The National.

Non-headliners, but not less note-worthy, include bands such as Mates of State, Rogue Wave, Beirut, Okkervil River, Grand Archives, Cold War Kids, The Kooks, White Rabbits, Throw Me the Statue, Ghostland Observatory, The Hives, Battles, Yeasayer and many more. Here’s the full line-up.

The Celebrate Brooklyn summer music concert series kicks off for the 30th year in Prospect Park beginning in June.

Artists and bands slated to play Prospect Park include Issac Hayes (June 12); Cold War Kids (June 26); Brazilian Girls (July 11); Beth Orton and Matt Munister (July 12); Deerhoof (July 18).

Angels and Airways Help Keep ‘OC-Style’ Pop Rock Alive

They are not necessarily ‘indie’ (whatever that is), because they are signed with Universal, but Angels and Airwaves are starting to get plenty of blog buzz.

The Adventure – Angels and Airwaves

Clearly, they are talented and make some catchy songs, but A&A may be a bit too polished by the record exces for their own good.

For example, this A&A video clip and the song could be straight outta OC.

Still, I have to admit I sometimes like the “OC style” – the corporate polished pop rock from heavily promoted artists and groups ‘owned’ by one of the Big Four.

While “OC style” branded pop rock is cool sometimes, my heart and soul are always with the indie bands, signed and unsigned, that keep amazing me each time I spin a new virtually unknown track or play catch-up and groove on songs that hit the Net six or more months ago.

It’s hard to keep up with all the great music out there nowadays, but I’m doing my best. :-
