San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music Festival This Weekend with The Strokes, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, Freelance Whales, Social Distortion

thestrokeslive
The Strokes will close out Day One of Outside Lands Festival

Tens of thousands of music lovers will converge on the gigantic meadows of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this weekend to see dozens of headlining and popular artists and bands, including The Strokes, My Morning Jacket, Social Distortion, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, Al Green, Gogol Bordello, Nas & Damian Marley, Cat Power, Wolfmother, Tokyo Police Club, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Chromeo, Freelance Whales, The Soft Pack, Pretty Lights, The Temper Trap, Wild Beasts, and Further with former Grateful Deads members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir.

While the line-up for the weekend fest is impressive, Outside Lands does not have the same breath of performances as it has enjoyed during it’s first two years; instead of three days, the festival has been shaved down to two days, mainly as the result of a swell of angry citizen groups who complained about everything from noise to parking (failing to credit the revenue it brought into the same neighborhoods adjacent to the city’s massive park). The area where the fest is held covers approximately 30 city blocks long and about 10 blocks wide.

Also, you can see our coverage of Outside Lands 2008 (with Radiohead and Beck!) and 2009 (Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse and more).

The following is a schedule of the performances we plan to cover this weekend (some set times are rounded off; stage names are included; here’s the fest map):

Best New Releases: Elsinore, The Budos Band, Lost in the Trees, Burnt Ones, Kathryn Calder, Landing on the Moon, Women

With all of the buzz surrounding last week’s release of Arcade Fire‘s their third album, The Suburbs, it has a way of overshadowing other new releases. Nonetheless, there are some worthy new releases this week that you may want to sink your teeth into. Most notably in our eyes (well, ears) is the debut LP from an Illinois band no one has heard of, and who convincingly has made our ‘bands to watch’ list.

The Champaign-Urbana pop quintet, Elsinore, self-released their second EP, The Chemicals, earlier this year, and we were intrigued right away. Now, six months later, the band has dropped their debut LP, Yes Yes Yes, via the understated Parasol Records label. The LP contains a remix from Gentleman Auction House frontman Eric Enger. Elsinore have previously opened for St. Vincent, Headlights and The Generationals. We absolutely love the new LP, and recommend snatching it up, as well as their EPs,  if you dig the tracks below. It’s time this band broke out.

“Yes Yes Yes” Elsinore from Yes Yes Yes

“Even’s Basement Recording” Elsinore from The Chemicals

“Lines” Elsinore from The Chemicals

“Breathing Light”Elsinore from The Chemicals

The Budos Band, a Staten Island, ten-piece afro funk band who’ve toured relentlessly over the years, and built somewhat of a following, dropped their aptly named LP, III. Plus, check out new music from Burnt Ones,  Lost in the Trees, The Budos Band, Burnt Ones, Kathryn Calder, Titles, Bottomless Pit, Landing on the Moon,  and more.

“Unbroken, Unshaven” – The Budos Band from The Budos Band III

“Burnt to Lose” Burnt Ones from Black Teeth & Golden Tongues

“Walk Around The Lake” – Lost in the Trees from All Alone in an Empty House

“Arrow” Kathryn Calder from Are You My Mother?

“Comeback”Roman Ruins from 7″ single

“Lover of Mine” (Romain Ruins Remix) – Beach House

“38 Souls” – Bottomless Pit from Blood Under The Bridge

“Bleeding Hearts” – Landing on the Moon from We Make History Now

“Road Regrets” Dan Mangan from Nice, Nice, Very Nice

“More & More & More” – The Mountain and The Trees from I Made This For You

What’s Coming Up:

  • Rising band Women will release a new LP on August 23 in Europe and Sept. 28 in U.S. On September 25, The Rattles will release the LP, Rattle On.

“Eye Sore” – Women from Public Strain

“Wavy Lane”The Rattles from Rattle On

Best New Releases: Best Coast, Menomena, Jaill, Bombay Bicycle Club, Social Studies, Miniature Tigers, The Golden Dogs, The Knocks

Clearly one of the most popular indie bands of the past six months, LA’s surf pop band Best Coast drop their new album this week, Crazy For You. The LP is filled to the brim with edgy, quasi-garage style indie pop rock that creates the framework for the the female equivalent of Brian Wilson‘s golden vocals. Best Coast will likely be on one or more of our favorite bands, songs, albums of year near the end of 2010. And, if you get to see Best Coast in concert, you’re won’t regret it – solid live show.

“Boyfriend” – Best Coast from Crazy For You

One of our favorite break-through rock bands of 2010 so far is Milwaukee‘s very own Jaill (formerly known as simply Jail). We love their creativity, energy and enthusiasm – all of which are expressed remarkably on their new release, That’s How We Burn. If you dig these two songs from Jaill, you may want to get more of the trio’s music;

from what we can hear in listening to Jaill over the course of the past few months, they are one of those bands that  don’t really have ‘throw-away’ tracks.  Afterall, the best indie record label ever, Subpop Records, signed Jaill late last year. The latest Jaill single, “The Stroller” is further evidence that the band has enormous talent and potential rolled into one.

The Stroller” – Jaill from That’s How We Burn

“Everyone’s Hip” – Jaill from That’s How We Burn

“New Noise”Jaill

After a three year wait following Menomena‘s terrific 2007 LP, Friend and Foe, the Portland trio has returned with their latest album, Mines. Even though the album was originally expected to be released in 2009, Menomena’s extra time allowed the band members to perfect the songs on Mines, which is evident by listening to it online for free. Would love to hear your opinions on Menomena’s lead single, or any other artist featured in today’s Best New Releases. The album is currently No. 1 on Amazon’s album charts.

“Five Little Rooms” – Menomena from Mines

They are not from India, and are not a bicycle club, but the Bombay Bicycle Club have one of the catchiest band names we’ve heard so far this year. Based in Couch End, London, BBC have carved out a fairly significant following in over the past three to four years, and it’s likely their new album out today, will add to the numbers of their fans.

“Ivy & Gold” Bombay Bicycle Club from Flaws

“Bullfighter Jacket” – Miniature Tigers from Fortress

Other Singles from Best New Releases of the Week

“Permanent Record” The Golden Dogs from Coat of Arms

“Make It Better” The Knocks from Make It Better

“Holler Boys” – Social Studies from Wind Up Wooden Heart

“Queen Drum” Young Galaxy from Invisible Republic

“Sun Body” – Chris Willits from Tiger Flower Circle Sun

“Johnny Utah”The Future Birds from Hampton’s Lullaby

“Collectors”My Other Friend from Burn Bright Tonight

“Judas”The Shimmies from To All Beloved Enemies

FYF 2010 Line-up Includes Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Wavves, Titus Andronicus, Best Coast, Ted Leo, Washed Out, Abe Vigado

fyffestla2010lineup

The Fu*k Yeah Fest for 2010 just announced one of the most amazing line-ups we’ve seen for any fest yet this year, particularly because it is so indie dominant with a lot of break-out 2010 bands.

Headliners for FYF Fest 2010 include The Rapture, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Wavves, Washed Out, Titus Andronicus, Delorean, Sleep, !!!, Man Man, Best Coast, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Cold Cave, Abe Vigoda, School of Seven Bells, A.A. Bondy, Magic Kids, The Mountain Goats, Thee Oh Sees, The Growlers, and many more.

What! Yeah, that’s what we said too!

“A More Perfect Union” Titus Andronicus

“Slow Motion” Panda Bear

“Round and Round”Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

“Post Acid” Wavves

“You and I” – Washed Out

Cults is a LA band to watch

And it doesn’t end there; also scheduled to play at the FYF Fest are Sleep, Dead Man’s Bones, Cults, The Soft Pack, Warpaint, Off!, Vetiver, Ceremony, Screaming Females, Lower Dens, Let’s Wrestle, and others.

“Oh My God”Cults

“Arm Over Arm” Screaming Females

“Hospice Gates”  Lower Dens

All of those bands for just $25. While the Early Bird tix, at $20 a pop, are gone, the second tier $25 are still available as of the publication of this post. A fest
with a line-up like this is bound to sell out. Here are a few songs from some of the bands set to hit the stage at Los Angeles State Historic Park on September 4th, Labor Day weekend.

What’s Hot Right Now, Vol. V: Cut Copy, Deerhunter, Panda Bear, The Walkmen, Interpol, El Guincho, Best Coast

It’s been a couple of weeks since we did a What’s Hot Right Now playlist mix. Even though we post hot songs all of the time, WHRN combines what the hottest indie songs are on the web over the past few days, by calculating a combination of top songs on IRC, Hypem, Elbo.ws, and a few other popular ‘hot now’ blogs.

Also, the WHRN playlists are not based necessarily on new releases, since many songs make the rounds before they are released; in fact, most are from upcoming, and much anticipated, new releases.

“Where I’m Going”Cut Copy

“Revival” – Deerhunter

“Slow Motion” Panda Bear

“Stranded” The Walkmen

“Barricade” Interpol

K-X-P is a drums, bass and synth trio from Helsinki, Finland, born out of the ashes of the seminal Op:l Bastards and The Lefthanded, led by the gifted musician Timo Kaukolampi, Tuomo Puranen, on bass and keyboards, and drummers Anssi Nykänen and Tomi Leppanen. K-X-P mixes electronics, krautrock, noise, and even rockabilly into a hypnotic and minimal motorik groove inspired by Raymond Scott, Moondog and Martin Rev.

secretcities

Fargo, North Dakota has a glimmer of light in the indie music world thanks to its hometown psychedelic electro-acoustic indie band, Secret Cities. In January, the band signed with Western Vinyl Records in Austin to record their debut LP, Pink Graffiti, out officially today. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but the album title is interestingly close to the name of one of our favorite bands – Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Hmmm.

Best New Releases: Fol Chen, Au Revoir Simone, Crocodiles, Big Boi, The Stone Foxes, Jay Bennett, Thieves Like Us, Loom, Mystery Jets

folchennewdecember

Unlike most of the weeks of 2010 so far, this week’s new releases are not stacked with big-time, highly anticipated works, but there’s plenty of great MP3s to download online for free from new singles, LPs and EPs out this week.

The LA band Fol Chen continue  to explore their mysterious, sinister musical pursuits, building on an on-going narrative established with their debut, Part 1: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made. Expect thick synth keys and steady beats immersed in electro-pop and garnished with new wave influences. Fol Chen has won praise from Los Angeles Magazine, SPIN, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, LA Times and many others. Add us to the list.

“The Holograms”Fol Chen from Part II: The New December

An amazing line up of artists came together to create remixes of Au Revoir Simone‘s 2009 LP, Still Night, Still Light, including Neon Indian, Jens Lekman, Max Cooper, Aeroplane, Punches, Tanlines and more.

There are also some interesting new releases this week from lesser known, but very talented, musicians who sent music in for review.  First to catch our attention was the band Mobile Wash Unit from New York. The band is the moniker for what was originally the one man music outfit Andy Snyder, who currently teaches philosophy at City University in New York.

The two tracks here are from his fresh album, Tent, which officially drops today via Astraea Records.

San Francisco rock band The Stone Foxes release their second album today, Bears and Bulls, DIY style. The band have previously opened for The Mother Hips and been hailed in publications like LAist, San Francisco Chronicle and Classic Rock Magazine. The Stone Foxes’ influences include The Band, Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin.

“Killed Robert Johnson”The Stone Foxes from Bears and Bulls

“Stomp”The Stone Foxes from Bears and Bulls

“The Acrobat” Lee Butcher from All in Good Time

Well, who knows what these folks had in mind when they named their band, but it’s not exactly one that a booking agent  would have an easy time with. Perhaps the single from Richard Laviolette & The Oil Spills‘ new LP, “Funeral Song”, is fitting, all things considered.   And of course one more semi oil related reference, the title of the band’s new album, out today, is Raw Materials.

Five Anticipated Summer Releases, Vol. III: Washed Out, Sparklehorse & Danger Mouse, Chief, Jaill, and Menomena

Ernest Greene as Washed Out

Many of you have already enjoyed our Anticipated Summer Releases Volume One with Japandroids, Arcade Fire, Panda Bear and others; and, Volume Two, featuring singles from upcoming albums from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Oberhofer, and Wavves. In this third installment of the series, we bring you five more upcoming releases we are looking forward to from Washed Out, Sparklehorse & Danger Mouse, Chief, Jaill and Menomena.

On the morning of the third day of South by Southwest in Austin last March, there was a line a block long outside of Emo’s of folks who were waiting to see Neon Indian and Washed Out perform. And the wait was worth the achy legs and sunburned necks.

Washed Out is the moniker of Ernest Greene, who moved back home to rural Georgia last summer, and began recording songs in his bedroom studio and posting them on his MySpace page. A few bloggers got wind of his songs via his MySpace page, and before long, Washed Out was everywhere on the web.

Greene’s style has often been referred to as the “chillwave movement”. The new song featured here, “You and I”, was performed at SXSW and has been making its way around the web in recent weeks.  The track features Caroline Polachek of Chairlift. No word yet on a release date for Washed Out’s debut LP.

P.S. This song reminds us so much of the 1990’s pop sensation, Enigma.

One of the greatest losses in the music world this year has been the untimely death of alternative rock icon Sparklehorse. Also known by his birth name, Mark Linkous, Sparklehorse was one of the most influential alt rock artists of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Only months before his tragic death in March, Linkous recorded an album with Danger Mouse and director/producer David Lynch. Other collaborators on the project include The Flaming Lips, Black Francis, Suzanne Vega, Julian Casablancas, and Vic Chesnutt, another influential musician who died tragically in the past year. The LP was supposed to be released last summer but squabbles over copyright terms kept the release of the LP in limbo, until now. Dark Night of the Soul will be released on July 19th.

Chief is a four-piece band out of Santa Monica, California comprised of 20-somethings Evan Koga, brothers Danny and Michael Fujikawa and Mike Moonves. The band has garnered the attention of praise of music writers and fans across the country, and should continue on that course following the August 20th official drop of their debut album, Modern Rituals.

Like fellow Brew City rockers the Goodnight Loving, Jaill brings a healthy dose of jangle to their  punchy garage-rock, topped with a distinct mid-western flare. The Milwaukee-based quartet’s debut, There’s No Sky (Oh My My) was self-released in 2009. Later, it was reissued on vinyl and cassette this year by Burger Records.

The band’s debut caught the ears of the respected indie label, Sub Pop Records, based in Seattle, and birthplace of bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney, as well as for newer bands like Beach House, Blitzen Trapper and No Age. Last December, Jaill signed to Sub Pop will issue Jaill’s follow-up LP, That’s How We Burn, says a whole bunch about the band, since Sub Pop is famous for recognizing, cultivating and succeeding with promising artists.

Positive and early reviews of Portland, Oregon-based indie rockers Menomena‘s new LP, Mines, have been building momentum in recent months. Our own cursory listen of an advance copy make it easy to say this belongs in the category of one of the summer’s most anticipated releases. We believe Mines will solify Menomena’s credibility and fan base, building off the well received releases of I Am The Fun Blame Monster and Friend and Foe.

The Drums Picked By Readers as “Break-Out Band” of 2010 (So Far), followed by Freelance Whales and 8 Others

The Drums have been picked by a huge margin by readers in the latest polling of the ‘break out artist of 2010 (So Far)”. Of the ten choices, Freelance Whales came second to The Drums, with rather low scores for the remaining eight artists in the poll.

For the past six weeks, hundreds of people have been taking our latest group of polls in a quest to find the ‘break out’ band of 2010 (so far). In the first round of ten bands, Local Natives were picked by 1,000 readers over nine other hot bands, including Surfer Blood, Crystal Castles, Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian.

In this latest poll, featuring another ten artists, 309 people voted. It was strikingly apparent from the first 100 votes that The Drums and Freelance Whales were the real competition of the latest poll. After 200 votes, the margins remained relatively the same, with The Drums receiving an impressive 43% of the vote.  This is not surprising considering the huge amount of blog love and mainstream press accolades The Drums having been enjoying, especially in the month’s leading up to the June release of their terrific debut.

“Forever & Ever Amen” – The Drums

“It Will All End in Tears” – The Drums

“Let’s Go Surfing” – The Drums

Brooklyn’s Freelance Whales followed rather far behind The Drums with 18% of the total votes. The remaining 39% of the vote was divided up among the other eight bands in the poll: Placing far behind Freelance Whales, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Villagers both took 7%, Warpaint, Smith Westerns and Washed Out with 5% each, Wild Nothing and Ganglians (4%), and Magic Kids (3%).

“Hannah” – Freelance Whales

“Generator First Floor” – Freelance Whales

Staten Island’s indie rock band Cymbals Eat Guitars broke through last year with their debut LP, Why There Are Mountains, one of the best debuts of the year. As 2010 rolled around, CEG were on a roll that continues to this day. The band will perform at a number of festivals this summer, including Lollapalooza and Lowlands in the Netherlands.

“Wind Phoenix (Proper Name)” – Cymbals Eat Guitars
villagersjackal

The Irish indie rock band Villagers are definitely one of the ‘break-through’ artists of 2010. The recent release of their debut album, Becoming A Jackal, has been widely hailed by critics and fans alike. Frontman Conor O’Brien said his lyrics are “transcendental darkness” and “dark imagery or feelings alongside really mundane domestic everyday things.”

Great Indie Cover Songs Uncovered: Radiohead, The Morning Benders, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Ruby Isle, Deer Tick, Jens Lekman

Everybody likes a good cover song. They are coming out all of the time, but only receive scattered coverage on blogs and mainstream music websites. Our approach has been to build up a solid mix of indie cover songs over time, and publish them in less frequent, but more extensive, playlists.

There are some terrific cover songs from Cymbals Eat Guitars of an Elliott Smith classic, indie folksters Deer Tick covering a Rolling Stones’ oldie; Jens Lekman of Paul Simon; Radiohead covering Neil Young; Ruby Isle’s
interpretation of The Decemberists’ “The Rake Song”; and The Morning Benders tearing a page from the 80s to cover The Smiths.

Random Order Playlist – A Classic Education, Short Circuit, Metal on Metal, Mommyheads, Dark Dark Dark, Vinegar Socks

Because there is so much music coming at us from every direction every day, we need to diligently filter the emails to keep only our favorite songs that we in turn share with all of you – something we’ve been doing for almost four years now. Ordinarily, the mix below would be part of the In Dee Mail series, but some of the tracks below came from social media or were discovered on other music blogs we like.

This new playlist series makes it easier and faster to share songs with you that do not necessarily fit into our regular playlists, including Best New Releases (every Tuesday), In Dee Mail, What’s Hot Right Now, Feetz to Da Beatz, One-Man Bands, Summer 2010 Mixtapes, and so on.

Kicking off this mix is the Italian indie rock band, A Classic Education, brought to us from Holiday Records, the same label that launched two of the most popular bands of 2010, The Drums and Surfer Blood. Earlier this year, Spin magazine online picked A Classic Education as one of the “must-hear bands” to see at South By Southwest last March.

Also, we have the first single release by Small Circuit, the moniker of Andrew Verner, a Los Angeles indie dance artist known for his tight remixes and dynamic live shows.

The songs are, as the title implies, wrapped into this random playlist, and represent all kinds of genres within the gigantic indie rock spectrum (since ‘indie’ has also become regarded as a genre without boundaries, adding to its growing appeal). You can click the first song and the built-in Yahoo player will stream automatically all 12 tracks non-stop. If you want to keep a song, just right click and save it to your computer. Enjoy.
