The official line-up for Coachella 2009, April 17 - April 19, has been released on the official Coachella website and it looks like another great year for the fest. While southern California is in the midst of a three-year drought, there is no drought in talented artists lined up for this year's Coachella fest.
Headliners include Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Beirut, Conor Oberst, Crystal Castles, The Killers, TV on the Radio, Thievery Corporation, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Black Keys, Dr. Dog, Calexico, M. Ward, Hold Steady, Girl Talk, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Paul Weller, Peter Bjorn and John, Okkervil River, No Age and a rare appearance of that pesky, infamous band from San Francisco The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The list goes on and on.
Tickets for Coachella 2009 are now on sale. Don't forget, camping passes go quickly. The popular three-day passes are priced at $269.00 and single day passes, which usually sell out the fastest, are $99 per day.
Many people complain about the cost, but if you look at the line-up and think of the enormity of the event - a lifetime memory - I think it's still worth it. In a disastrous economic situation across the nation, chances are the festival will still sell out or come close to it.
"Eraser" - No Age from Nouns
"Strange Times" - The Black Keys from Attack & Release
"White Winter Hymnal" - Fleet Foxes from self-titled debut Fleet Foxes
"Lost Coastlines" - Okkervil River from The Stand Ins
"Cape Canaveral" - Conor Oberst from self titled debut Conor Oberst

Outside Lands celebrated its first year as the Bay Area's newest major rock festival with three days of music from artists and bands like Radiohead, Jack Johnson, Tom Petty, Beck, Andrew Bird, Widespread Panic, Wilco, Broken Social Scene, Rouge Wave, Manu Chao, Ben Harper, Primus and Rodrigo y Gabriela, among dozens of others.
Unlike most other summer rock festivals, there were no sun burns or cases of heat exhaustion at Outside Lands. San Francisco's famously reliable fog, that the city is known world-wide for, drenched Golden Gate Park's Polo Fields for most of the three-day music festival - probably not what the over-advertised Heineken vendors wanted, but what did they expect in August on the west side of San Francisco?
But on the last day of the festival, Sunday August 24, the sun came out and blue skies replaced low-lying clouds and mist. Having been to plenty of outdoor concerts and festivals in the hot sun, it's easy to welcome and appreciate the cooling waves of continuous fog.
"Herectics" - Andrew Bird
"Sightlines" - Rogue Wave (check out the band's other music, they're awesome.)
When Radiohead took the stage late Friday evening, the lights surrounding the entire venue beamed up through the fog like lasers - a common site in northern California. Just ask anyone who has shone a flashlight or drove with their headlights on through the thick summer fog - you can literally cast a beam of light for as far as the eye can see.
Perhaps this is how Stars Wars director George Lucas, a native of northern California, came up with the idea for the famous laser weapons featured in the classic trilogy.
Anyways, the sets for good indie bands and artists - like Andrew Bird, Broken Social Scene, M. Ward, Rogue Wave - were too short, and the time delay between various acts were too short for such a huge place - literally four football fields from end to end. Next time they should also do something about the dust - that really surprised me since most of the park is lush and green (thanks to the fog and irrigation); dust is just not something you see in San Francisco.

Also, it'd be nice if they could come up with some innovative ways to protect the park more from environmental damage. I can't help but to feel a little guilty for the digging up of the grass (grass - not talking about that kind people - is a rare thing in SF) and how the loud music affected wildlife in and around the park.

It is hard to believe that August is half over and soon we will be saying good-bye to another summer. If there was only a way to make the summers stretch out like they seemed to when we were kids. The much-anticipated rock fests for August are Chicago's famed Lollapalooza, The Virgin Festival in Baltimore, the New York City metro area's (actually Jersey City, NJ, just across the river) new, major rock festival - the All Points Festival, aka "Coachella East", not to mention the much anticipated Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco's beautiful Golden Gate Park Polo Fields, just a few hundred feet from the ocean amongst the carpet green grounds and Monterey pine trees.
After years of trying, promoters were granted license to hold a major outdoor festival this year featuring dozens of top indie bands and artists, with Radiohead playing two nights of the three day festival.
Nearly two weekends ago, the Download Festival 'San Francisco' (actual location was Mt. View, CA, about 30 miles south of the city) was held at the Shoreline with disastorous results, giving a totally different meaning to "down" and "load". The attendance was shockingly down from the previous year, almost off 60 percent and it showed by the thin crowds. There was not much "load" to the fest as far as line-up, especially when you consider that there are so many major festivals this year (including the debut of the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in September).hove festival - norway - june 23-26 - beck, the raconteurs, brain jonestown massacre, panic at the disco, the raconteurs, the kooks, yeasayer, foals, flogging molly, les savy fav, the cool kids, stars, dinosaur jr. and more.

Lollapalooza 2008 kicked off today in Chicago's Grant Park. The event set for this weekend (August 1-3) features dozens of top indie artists and bands is expected to sell out of tickets, especially the high-priced three-day pass.Friday's Lollapalooza 2008 line-up includes popular indie bands like Bloc Party, The Raconteurs, The Kills, Mates of State, Rogue Wave, Holy Fuk, Yeasayer, Gogol Bordello and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. For reasons unknown to IRC, Radiohead is not being webcasted during what is expected to be a nearly three-hour set.
Other artists performing on Friday (but not via the webcast) include Black Keys, The Black Lips, Cat Power, VHS or BETA, The Cool Kids, Manchester Orchestra, Louis XIV, Enemy UK, CSS and more.If you've forgiven AT&T Blue Room for censoring Eddie Vedder (who called out Bush's ruinationof the world) at last year's Lollapalooza, then you can watch performances throughoutthe weekend (provided you have a beefy Internet connection and fast computer - and that AT&T has enough pipes set-up).
Saturday's Lolla line-up for the AT&T webcast includes The Gutter Twins, The Go! Team, DeVotchka,Explosions in the Sky, Broken Social Scene and Wilco. On Sunday, you can watch The Whigs, Office,G Love & Special Sauce, Blues Traveler, John Bulter Trio, Flogging Molly, Love and Rockets, The National.
Not featured on the Blue Room on Saturday are bands like Okkervil River, Battles, Brand New and for the hard rock fans, Rage Against the Machine. Sunday's Lollapalooza line-up also features The Weakerthans, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Iron & Wine, Nine Inch Nails, Love and Rockets and Kayne West.Labels: Festivals, Lollapalooza, Lollapalooza Lineup, Radiohead, The Raconteurs

Norway's Hove Festival was held a few weeks ago featuring a powerful three-day line-up of musical acts, including Panic at the Disco, Beck, Foals, The Kooks, MGMT (formerly Management), The Raconteurs, and a rare performance by indie rock legends the Brian Jonestown Massacre (photo, above). The BJM, who were featured with The Dandy Warhols in the compelling rockumentary film, DiG!, was, by all accounts, and considering a history of brawling and drug and alcohol abuse, awesome. This is how you want to see BJM in concert.
Other favorite rock and indie artists and bands at the 2008 Hove Festival included Yeasayer, Foals, Flogging Molly, Les Savy Fav, The Cool Kids, Stars, Dinosaur Jr., Paramore, The Go Team and a dozen others. Access the full video playlist.
We've all seen enough low-quality, hand-held videos of music concerts and festivals on YouTube and other popular social media networks. But it is rare to find high-quality video and audio, not to mention full sets, from some of indie's biggest groups and artists for free.
The videos are hosted by NRKP3 in Norway. There is no information listed about how long the shows, complete with thrilling crowd shots, roaming camera cranes and top-notch production, will be available for unlimited, free viewing. See 'em while you can.

Ward, Spoon, The Ruby Suns, Fleet Foxes, Elf Power, Spiritualized, Les Savy Fav, Apples in Stereo, Cut Copy, The Dodos and dozens more.
On Friday, the theme of the show is centered around performing highly acclaimed, entire albums performed by some of alternative and indie music's most cherished bands.
First up, Public Enemy will play It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back followed by Sebadoh performing Bubble and Scrape, and last but not at all the least, Mission of Burma will treat the festival crowds to the entire anthology from Vs.
The scheduled line-up for Saturday, July 16:Animal Collective

No Age
Atlas Sound - "My Car" (MP3)

The Ruby Suns
Icy Demons

This is an awesome line-up for only $30. While I have to admit I don't know all of the performers, $30 to see Animal Collective, The Hold Steady, !!!, No Age, Atlas Sound, Elf Power, The Ruby Suns and Caribou is a hell of a bargain.
Sunday, July 20 lineup is as follows:
Spoon
Dinosaur Jr.
Spiritualized

The Apples in Stereo
Boris
Dirty Projectors

Sunday is another amazing line-up, including Spoon, Dinosaur Jr., Spiritualized, M. Ward, The Apples in Stereo, Cut Copy, The Dodos and many others.
Interestingly enough, despite a sagging economy, high fuel prices and saturation of big, outdoor music festivals spanning two to five days in duration, the fact is that ticket sales for both the veteran fests like Coachella and Bonnaroo, and the 'newbies', have been overall successful so far for 2008.

It's hard to believe there are only two days left in the four-day Bonnaroo Festival. So far, Bonnaroo fest goers have seen a variety of bands and musicians including Metallica, The Raconteurs, My Morning Jacket, Steve Marley, Battles, Jose Gonzales, Rilo Kiley, Willie Nelson, Tegan and Sara, MIA, The Swell Season, Les Claypool, Minus The Bear.
Here are some of the best YouTube videos from Bonnaroo from Thursday and Friday. Surprisingly, there are very few videos from Bonnaroo, unless you want to watch slices taped off a computer of the webcast.

Jack Johnson performing at the second annual Bonnaroo (2003). Photo courtesy of evilvince.comThousands of music and arts enthusiasts are gathering in the beautiful foothills of Tennessee to enjoy four days of music, arts and plenty more. Bonnaroo is one of the largest festivals in the United States and the first major festival of the 2008 summer season.
In recent years, Bonnaroo has become as well known as other big music and arts festivals like Lollapalooza, Coachella and Austin City Limits.
But Bonnaroo does not start of with a bang. The line up for the first day of the festival pales in comparison to the artists and bands set to perform this weekend.
For the Thursday kick-off, bands like Vampire Weekend, Superdrag, Battles, and MGMT are scheduled to play - all of these in the so-called "This Tent". The other 'stages', or tents, feature lesser known artists, or bands and musicians that have a comparably small or local following, such as Lez Zeppelin, Dark Star Orchestra, Grand Ole Party and The Felice Brothers.
MP3: MGMT - "Destrokk"
For music fans that have never heard The Battles, check out this driving electronic rock video titled "Atlas". It has been viewed over one million times.
It's not much of a surprise that the first day of the festival, being that it is a Thursday, is not loaded up with must-see bands. Furthermore, the music doesn't even get started until early evening.
Nevertheless, on Friday, June 13, Bonnaroo becomes the epicenter of a wide array of impressive bands and artists, including The Raconteurs, Metallica, My Morning Jacket, Drive-By Truckers, Steve Marley, Jose Gonzales, Rilo Kiley, Willie Nelson, Tegan and Sara, MIA, The Swell Season, !!!, MSTRKRFT, Tiesto, Les Claypool, Minus The Bear and almost a dozen others.
Tegan and Sara performing "Back In Your Head" (YouTube video)
The only problem, and this is the problem with most festivals that have multiple stages, is that you are almost guaranteed to miss some of your favorite artists or bands because they perform simultaneously in different locations. That's why pouring over the schedule in advance and mapping where you want to be and when is so important to maximizing your musical experience.
With that said, and to the credit of the organizers, Bonnaroo is one of the top music festivals at which who plays where and when has been scheduled in such a way that most festival goers will have the opportunity to see most of the 'big name' performers in their genre (i.e. indie rock) without too much overlap.
Another cool thing about Bonnaroo is that headliners play very long sets (Metallica is playing for 2 1/2 hours and My Morning Jacket is playing for three hours) and the music goes well into the wee hour mornings, when the summer sky is full of stars and the cooler night time air makes for a wonderful experience.

This year's Live 105 BFD Festival was a completely different gig than last year's fest. For one, tickets sold out fairly fast (being that they were only $10.53 base price; one-third the cost of last year's tickets), whereas in 2007, they were still available on the day of the event, and not only that, but they were giving out free tickets.Another change to this year's BFD was the fact that the venue was slightly moved around with the stages being set up in the parking lot area. There is still no official explanation for this, but it may have limited the number of tickets sold over last year.
On top of all of that, the 2007 BFD had a better line-up than this year's show, as many fans and reviewers have pointed out (including the San Jose Mercury News): Interpol, Social Distortion, AFI, Bloc Party, The National, Kings of Leon, CSS, Queens of the Stone Age and many others.
But again, for only $10 a pop, it's no wonder this year's BFD sold out, but it would have been a much better festival if they had anywhere near the same amazing line-ups as years past; and people would have paid the $30 or more for more headlining acts - that is pretty apparent from what so many are saying.
Based on the number of new festivals this year, it is not a stretch to conclude that BFD organizers had a hard time filling the line-up with 'top name' bands and artists for this year's event, and thus, the lower price for tickets.
Additionally, they make more money from advertising and vendors than the tickets anyways. Therefore, as one very disappointed past-BFD fan wrote, it's not like the festival-goer is really getting a break, especially if the line-up is such a drag compared to previous BFDs.
So far, there is not a very good selection of YouTube videos to show - which is amazing considering the Bay Area is a major tech and music center of the world. Perhaps, more videos of BFD 2008 will surface later on, but for now, here's the IRC picks:
Alkaline Trio - "Help Me"
Alkaline Trio was one of the best bands in the lineup for BFD 08, so here's another clip - "Radio"
Here's another view of Alkaline Trio playing "Radio"
MSTRKRFT performing with lightshow at 2008 BFD:
More from MSTRKRFT's BFD set:
MGMT serves up "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters"
Airborne Toxic Event bangs out "Sometime Around Midnight"
LoveLikeFire performing "Signs"
The Kooks performing short clip of "Naive"
PlayRadioPlay performing "I'm The Pirate, You're The Princess" at BFD 08
Magic Bullets performing "Yesterday's Seen Better Days"
Thought this was cute; little kid dancing to Cypress Hill
AntiFlag - Song title? (short clip, not best quality)
Santogold performing "You'll Find A Way"
From inside the tent: Cover version of Daft Punk's "One More Time" by (anyone know? Bueller? Bueller...)
If you have any interest in seeing the BFD trash left around after the festival, check out the After BFD video. Other videos include performances from Here, Here; Apside plays "K Vision"; short clip of Flogging Molly; PlayRadioPlay performing "Compliment Each Other Like Colors".
YouTuber OHteenhearts offers a bunch of videos from BFD, but they are fairly low quality and short. Yet if you are a crazy Kooks or MGMT fan, and you just must see no matter what, check them out.

San Francisco rock radio station Live 105 kicks off its annual all-day music festival next week, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mt. View, California.
This is one of the best day-long music festivals in the United States considering the ticket price - a mere $10 - and the range of popular indie artists playing at the 10-hour festival. Talk about bang for the buck!
Tickets are on sale now. IRC does not endorse any ticketing outlets, but you can click BFD ticketing (links to Google results) to find tickets.
If it is like it was last year, you can also take a chance and show up to get free tickets. People in blue coats were handing out free tickets at the gate shortly after 1 pm.
If that doesn't happen, you'll probably still be able to buy tickets at the box office, or if worse comes to worse, find one a scalper.
Gates open at 11:30am, festival starts at 12:00pm .BFD Line-up for the BudLight Festival Stage (12:00pm-8:30pm) with links to MySpace pages:

The Isle of Skye Music Festival has been canceled by organizers for running out of money. Festival organizers reportedly fell into the red by $500,000 Pounds. I'd love to know how and who screwed this up, especially in a year when music festivals are raking in cash. The Reading and Leeds festivals' sold out in just days.
That's bad news for all the rock fans in Scotland who planned to attend this year's festival - which was considered the most "fan-friendly" of all festivals in Europe in 2006.So, for the memories, here's some audio and video from past Isle of Skye Music festivals.
Here's some memories:

- South by Southwest 2008 was another resounding success, proving once again that it is the king of all festivals for just about everything currently hot, and up and coming, in the world we call indie rock music, film and art.

The Bamboozle Left Fesival kicks off today, April 5th in Irvine, California and extends through the end of Sunday, April 6th.Check back regularly for updates from Bamboozle Left's weekend festival and get blog and media reports, photographs and videos, plus MP3s and streams of profiled artists.Performing today on one of six stages at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (I hate how so many of our music, sporting and other venues and events have surrendered their namesakes to brands of capitalism; it really takes the 'organic' feel out of the event and makes you wonder why you still pay so much for tickets) include:
- All American Rejects [mp3: It Ends Tonight], Josephine Collective, Alkaline Trio [mp3: Radio], Daphne Love Derby, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore [mp3: Pressure], New Found Glory, The Bouncing Souls, The Starting Line and Valencia to name a few.
But there really are no 'big headliners' at Bamboozle Left that other music fests for 2008 can brag about.
Then again, the full line-up is not all that bad for the $45 single day tickets at the door, but with the dragging economy, fears of a recession and rip-off gas prices, the single day ticket price is still a bit pricey. Why not $70 for a two-day pass?
If you're in the Irvine area and decide to go the festival last through the end of Sunday. Check back for more lineup information, performances, music, videos, blog and media reports.
